Jared: I really enjoy your videos as they have been very helpful to me (even if I had taken pictures for 20 + years) My question is you were using the Nikon D3100 for this video and I see that you were using Lightroom for editing the photos have you ever used Nikon's Capture NX program? I use a Nikon D80 but am getting a second camera body and leaning more towards the D3100 instead of the 5100 because I want to use the difference and put towards better glass. Thanks again! photo_man75
Jared, this is the firts video of yours i´m watching, just got a D3100 18-55mm kit, and getting used to Aperture, Shutter Speed & ISO, your video (and the others i will certainly watch) are great, just got LR 3.3 as well, need to start using it. anyway, thanks for the help and keep up the good work! Fro, just a tip for you (and sorry for the bad english):
Breathing: Dont hold your breath. When u do that your body goes into a defense mechanism and it takes energy away from legs, hands... and centers it in the middle of the body. But you hold your camera with your hands, so you want energy there.
What do army snipers train for shooting? How to breath: And they do like this:
You have some good videos, I wonder if anyone would recognize you without the hair :) . I noticed in this video, and I think I it had my attention 90% of the time, you kind of set your white balance by guessing (a little warmer, colder..). This scene is a difficult one because of natural an artificial light in your shot in the same time. So, when would you use something like a gray card or what other way do you set the white balance ?
Hey Jared I really appropriate you purchasing a less expensive camera to shoot with, since most of us are not on your level of equipment. Unfortunately not everyone can shoot with a $1000+ camera, give great advice and provide helpful tutorials..
the actual photo session and showing where you were putting yourself helped me out more than anything, and my favorite shot was the pencil shot. One thing though, I have a D3000 and it hurts hearing it get bashed on so badly. All I hear from everyone is "its the worst dslr, its the lowest end of the spectrum, etc etc" it makes it seem like the D3000 is the Daewoo Legonza of the photography world.
I absolutely love the hand and pencil shot. I dont care what others say but I was impressed and I loved what I learned from this video. Keep them coming :)
Yo jared im Totally new @ this but i wanna take my photos to a Greater level i got the D3000 and a sigma dc lens 18-200 mm ? Please help me out cause i wanna get the best out of this camera are there any tut's u have with this lens ? or should i just watch what u got here ?
hey jared, love you videos mate. they are not only very informative but also very entertaining too. keep up the good work! I purchased a d3100 about 5 months ago and have really enjoyed using it thanks to ur videos. im now thinking about going for the d7000 for better low light performance and to shoot street photography etc. my mate thinks its a better idea to go for something like the d3 or d700 as the d7000 is only slightly better than the d3100. whats your view on this?
At 6:27 your saying great foto, background blown out. Did you actually look at it? So much clutter and not at all blown out for that lens. At 1.8, that thing should have made a blur, but you've got all kinds of crap disrupting that shot. My GF's telling me your pix are not that great and I'm trying to tell her you've got good ideas, but then you post that and I got nothing to tell her.
@Madwand1 What you have to remember is I am looking at the back of a d3000 screen, what looks like blown out on a 3 inch screen may not look that way later in the computer. At this point I try and wait until I see the images in the computer to give my thoughts about them.
In terms of your girlfriend thinking my shots are not great, if you would like to base that off of this quick photo shoot than by all means please do so. If you want to look at my portfolios feel free to check them out.
@JaredPolin I really like most of the stuff you talk about, but in this instance, you are saying you really blew something out. I have to agree with her here that it's not blown out at all. The background is really distracting. Now I was also telling her that I really liked the hand and pencil shot. Very nice. Don't get offended, it's the corrective criticism that you said you didn't like from the beginning. I like your stuff and am working through it in order.
@JaredPolinnow i wanna no so im sure im buying something good for what i wanna do is the nikon d3100 good for taken shots of people so it can look somewhat like the pros cuz i wanna do tht for a biz but not spend an ass load of money on the camera n the others seem to much for me n the nikon 3100 is low enough to afford but i dnt wanna spend tht kind of money if its not gonna be great at taken pic of people plz and thankyou i hope i explain it well enough for you
i bought that REEEAALLY cheap camera (not really).. i just paid 381,50 euros for that.. in supermarket.. dam im a lucky boy... but only one problem with it... guess what.. Awesome Video Jared...I'm new to SLR, just got a D7000 and now ready to learn and take much better pics....I wanna learn more on RAW.....will have to buy the Apple Aperture since i use an iMac. Please keep sharing your expertise...Good job man :)
Excellent tutorial ... I hope to see in the future a super secret project with the Nikon D7000 ... I will keep an eye on your publications, Greetings from Venezuela!
I love your videos, actually learn more here than in my college classes. I noticed you use Lightroom. CS5 is used by most of the students I know. I am a mom with 4 kiddos and I have just can't decide for next semester which program to buy. I like your results with Lightroom and believe less is more. Do you always use one or both? Thanks for your videos! Fro Knows Photo! :)
@SeptemberLynnDesigns I use lightroom to process all of my raw files. It is designed for photographers where CS5 is more for graphic designers in my mind. The work flow and organization is easier in lightroom but both will edit the raw files the same way.

Great video and very helpful. Would love to see another one of these for the newbie (me) using the D3100 and the kit 18-55mm lens. And if the post editing could be on Aperture 3 that would be a bonus!
This is a great series Jared. We all want to know how to get the most out of our cameras and justify the price difference of a DSLR from a p&s. The way you explain the different components of a photo makes this all attainable instead of thinking of a camera as a magic box. I know I will be doing a lot more with my D3000 than I expected a month ago. Looking forward to more of the "secret project"!
I've watched a few of your tutorial videos now. They're really informative, especially your d7000 vids. Thanks, man, Looking for ward to more of your videos.
Im really liking the longer videos that show the beggining where you explaining what your thinking while you shoot. all the way to the end where your tweeking the pics. Im beggining to get a real good idea of how to approuch taking good pics and how to come out with a good finished result. Really enjoying your work. Thanks!
Great video! Entertaining an informative, personally I don't like watching videos under 15 minutes long because then I have to go find another one to watch and it waists time looking. This was a good length!
Great video! The 20+ minutes flies by when the information and presentation style is so good. Superb to see the whole work flow and hear your thinking on shooting and processing live as you do it. And the word Lil found was "found" :P
I heard that holding your breath is alright but you could do better if you breathe like a sniper, breathe deeply and shoot on your exhale. Your muscles will be relaxed and will reduce camera shake. You should try it some time.
i prefer this kind of long start-to-end, from field shot all the way to tweaking with clear explanations vid, allowing everybody to learn from head to toe, especially helpful for beginner like myself.
awesome! thanks for vid, Fro! =D
p/s: the word Lil found was actually "FOUND". how coincidental! lolz~
These long videos are VERY GREAT! Really! Explaining that way is much better for us to understand how you think and we start to figure things we haven't noticed before! So, more like these please [2].
I liked what you said about using the book to create dimension. As long as the video is shooting and teaching at the same time (like this one was) instead of just talking or just taking photos, 20 minutes is fine IMO.
@JaredPolin do you go higher than iso 800 on the d3000? what's your work flow on removing noise using Lightroom? maybe you could make a video out of it? :D
and does lightroom have an unsharp mask filter? thanks
Sir Fro, this is quite possibly one of the most eloquent Photography videos I have seen on youtube. Subscribed and kind of getting addicted to your videos :-P
I have another question, I took some pictures and I noticed that my cameras focus is kinda off. For ex. I focused on the head and it's focusing on the stomach or I'm focusing on the subject and it's focusing on the background. What do u think is wrong? Is it me or something wrong with the camera?
@NikonNewb Do you own a 70-200 yet? This is tough on a d90 as the 27-70 really isnt wide enough for most things. If you are going to stick with the d90 or DX sensor for a while il say 17-55 as you will still be able to sell i for 1100-1200 when the time comes.
Great video Jared! A few comments for you, what do you check in the view finder on the DX camera after you take a picture? Do you zoom in on your area of focus to make sure it's in locked in? And with regards to checking with the Histogram, do you have a video on how to read the graph? Shooting outdoor a lot I find with the sun and glare that checking the screen is useless because you can't read the screen! Oh were you using the auto setting for White Balance in this shoot?
Hi Jared, firstly your awesome and an amazing photographer, I was wondering if you cld give me advice on the 35mm f/1.8 lens? Taking into account im a photography student taking my A levels, so later down the line im going to be investing in a FX camera, is the older 35mm f/2 a better choice than the 35mm f/1.8? Thanks
@ferrarisucks53 depends on if your camera has a focus motor. The d3000 does not so the 1.8 will be better and cheaper. If you own a camera like the d90 and plan to buy a FX camera in the future, maybe the 2.0 will be a better investment.
Awesome vid, motivated me to take the plunge off Aperture priority and experiment with Manual. Quick ques, after I've made my setting and shoot I notice my settings are different. My settings aren't fixed where I set them after I take a picture? What am I missing?
More of these vids, they are very educational to hear your thought process.
the white balance seems to be a bit off. I look at the skin tone, not the grays from the background. I understand that it is a bit hard with so many different light sources and their different temperatures
Yea Jared these videos are great and informative for a newcomer like me, I am aspiring to use photography as a means of income and eventually take it on full time along with video editing and stuff, more videos like this one get me on track everyday thanks bro!
She 'FOUND' it.. excellent :)

Great video! Entertaining an informative, personally I don't like watching videos under 15 minutes long because then I have to go find another one to watch and it waists time looking. This was a good length!

This was actually the first video that I saw with you! And still one of the best. Nice long video with supermuch information. Perfect vid!
Just one thing, stop changing the titles into stupid things! Come on.

Great video! The 20+ minutes flies by when the information and presentation style is so good. Superb to see the whole work flow and hear your thinking on shooting and processing live as you do it. And the word Lil found was "found" :P

Great video, whole process of making photos from setting up the camera to getting pictures ready to print. I would like to see more of these.

So, more like these please [2].

more like this please

I liked what you said about using the book to create dimension. As long as the video is shooting and teaching at the same time (like this one was) instead of just talking or just taking photos, 20 minutes is fine IMO.

sir you said you shoot at iso 800 on d3000 wouldn't it take noisy pictures?
jpbnto 1 year ago
@jpbnto not really, i seem to do very well with it at 800
JaredPolin 1 year ago 5
@JaredPolin do you go higher than iso 800 on the d3000? what's your work flow on removing noise using Lightroom? maybe you could make a video out of it? :D
and does lightroom have an unsharp mask filter? thanks
jpbnto 1 year ago
@jpbnto I have, i have done 1600 at concerts usually it goes black and white and i dont take noise out or use reduction of any kind in my images.

I have another question, I took some pictures and I noticed that my cameras focus is kinda off. For ex. I focused on the head and it's focusing on the stomach or I'm focusing on the subject and it's focusing on the background. What do u think is wrong? Is it me or something wrong with the camera?
NikonNewb 1 year ago
@NikonNewb it could be a lens thing but i would need more details on whats up.

Hey jared which one would u go for a Nikon 24-70mm $1800 or a Nikon 17-55mm about 1400? Only 300-400 dollars on a d90
NikonNewb 1 year ago
@NikonNewb Do you own a 70-200 yet? This is tough on a d90 as the 27-70 really isnt wide enough for most things. If you are going to stick with the d90 or DX sensor for a while il say 17-55 as you will still be able to sell i for 1100-1200 when the time comes.
JaredPolin 1 year ago
Great video Jared! A few comments for you, what do you check in the view finder on the DX camera after you take a picture? Do you zoom in on your area of focus to make sure it's in locked in? And with regards to checking with the Histogram, do you have a video on how to read the graph? Shooting outdoor a lot I find with the sun and glare that checking the screen is useless because you can't read the screen! Oh were you using the auto setting for White Balance in this shoot?
eltronjesus 1 year ago
@eltronjesus I am looking at focus when I zoom in, thats the most important to me, if the focus is locked i wana see it.

I love how you do this with material that beginners are likely to own, and show how to get most out of it.

Thanks
ferrarisucks53 1 year ago
@ferrarisucks53 new 35 1.8 is a killer one not to expensive either.
JaredPolin 1 year ago
@JaredPolin thanks for the advice :)
ferrarisucks53 1 year ago
@ferrarisucks53 depends on if your camera has a focus motor. The d3000 does not so the 1.8 will be better and cheaper. If you own a camera like the d90 and plan to buy a FX camera in the future, maybe the 2.0 will be a better investment.

Awesome vid, motivated me to take the plunge off Aperture priority and experiment with Manual. Quick ques, after I've made my setting and shoot I notice my settings are different. My settings aren't fixed where I set them after I take a picture? What am I missing?
More of these vids, they are very educational to hear your thought process.
4DSquad 1 year ago
@4DSquad Not to sure why that would happen, it wouldnt happen in manual though.

What are the odds? :)

the white balance seems to be a bit off. I look at the skin tone, not the grays from the background. I understand that it is a bit hard with so many different light sources and their different temperatures

Since you've chosen Fro Knows Photos as your site name and such do you feel obligated to keep your fro?
What happens if you ever decide to cut the fro? will it just be "Knows Photo"?
