  • She 'FOUND' it.. excellent :)

  • I love these "long form" videos. I actually learn a lot and I don't mind how long they are.

  • Wonderful Video & Lot helpful to improve my shoot.. Thanks & Keep Up the Good Work :-)

  • extremely helpful. thanks a million!

  • Jared: I really enjoy your videos as they have been very helpful to me (even if I had taken pictures for 20 + years) My question is you were using the Nikon D3100 for this video and I see that you were using Lightroom for editing the photos have you ever used Nikon's Capture NX program? I use a Nikon D80 but am getting a second camera body and leaning more towards the D3100 instead of the 5100 because I want to use the difference and put towards better glass. Thanks again! photo_man75

  • Men you rock.! Amazing photoshoot.! This video help me a lot with my pictures.! Saludos desde México.!

  • Jared, this is the firts video of yours i´m watching, just got a D3100 18-55mm kit, and getting used to Aperture, Shutter Speed & ISO, your video (and the others i will certainly watch) are great, just got LR 3.3 as well, need to start using it. anyway, thanks for the help and keep up the good work! Rony Abdul from Brazil!

  • The word she found was 'found', how ironic - Pretty fitting...

  • Are you using the D3000 or the D3100 in this video and which one of those two do you recommend?

  • You have some good videos, I wonder if anyone would recognize you without the hair :) . I noticed in this video, and I think I it had my attention 90% of the time, you kind of set your white balance by guessing (a little warmer, colder..). This scene is a difficult one because of natural an artificial light in your shot in the same time. So, when would you use something like a gray card or what other way do you set the white balance ?

  • Hey Jared I really appropriate you purchasing a less expensive camera to shoot with, since most of us are not on your level of equipment. Unfortunately not everyone can shoot with a $1000+ camera, give great advice and provide helpful tutorials..

  • the actual photo session and showing where you were putting yourself helped me out more than anything, and my favorite shot was the pencil shot. One thing though, I have a D3000 and it hurts hearing it get bashed on so badly. All I hear from everyone is "its the worst dslr, its the lowest end of the spectrum, etc etc" it makes it seem like the D3000 is the Daewoo Legonza of the photography world.

  • very helpful video... I would like to know more about relation between aperture and blowing up backgrounds....

  • Like the long video format as well as showing us how you actually do your editing. Thanks!

  • I absolutely love the hand and pencil shot. I dont care what others say but I was impressed and I loved what I learned from this video. Keep them coming :)

  • which program is tht one that u use to edit ur pictures? i like it! and i like the picture of the hand and the pencil!

  • Great Video, I Personally Learn A Lot From These Videos! Please Keep Coming More Of This.

  • How did u do that? Wow ur grandmas face very clear but the book shes holding was blurry is just like that? or u just adjust something?

  • @pnoyrock76 its because hes using a big aperture

  • What is the good PhotoShop program any one? with affordable for the beginners?

  • Hey Jared did u use ur Nikon D3100 coz i just bought that camera and i want to see your finish products pix in D3100

  • this is classic Jared ur taking pix with ur loving grandma..... dude i miss my grandma

  • long video's are excellent.. but at times you sound too sluggish...

  • Yo jared im Totally new @ this but i wanna take my photos to a Greater level i got the D3000 and a sigma dc lens 18-200 mm ? Please help me out cause i wanna get the best out of this camera are there any tut's u have with this lens ? or should i just watch what u got here ?

  • Lil is adorable, another great job Jared!!

  • You look likw a lion with that hair

  • At 6:27 your saying great foto, background blown out. Did you actually look at it? So much clutter and not at all blown out for that lens. At 1.8, that thing should have made a blur, but you've got all kinds of crap disrupting that shot. My GF's telling me your pix are not that great and I'm trying to tell her you've got good ideas, but then you post that and I got nothing to tell her.

  • @Madwand1 What you have to remember is I am looking at the back of a d3000 screen, what looks like blown out on a 3 inch screen may not look that way later in the computer. At this point I try and wait until I see the images in the computer to give my thoughts about them.

In terms of your girlfriend thinking my shots are not great, if you would like to base that off of this quick photo shoot than by all means please do so. If you want to look at my portfolios feel free to check them out.

  • @JaredPolin I really like most of the stuff you talk about, but in this instance, you are saying you really blew something out. I have to agree with her here that it's not blown out at all. The background is really distracting. Now I was also telling her that I really liked the hand and pencil shot. Very nice. Don't get offended, it's the corrective criticism that you said you didn't like from the beginning. I like your stuff and am working through it in order.

  • @JaredPolinnow i wanna no so im sure im buying something good for what i wanna do is the nikon d3100 good for taken shots of people so it can look somewhat like the pros cuz i wanna do tht for a biz but not spend an ass load of money on the camera n the others seem to much for me n the nikon 3100 is low enough to afford but i dnt wanna spend tht kind of money if its not gonna be great at taken pic of people plz and thankyou i hope i explain it well enough for you

  • @Madwand1 fucker.

  • @15tewig Yes, as often as possible. Thanks.

  • Thanks Jared, I learnt a great deal from watching this video. Keep it up.

    Cheers

  • WOW She's 100 Years old! That's Amazing! Did she get a letter from the Queen?

  • Hi i am wanting to do a music video for my single. Would this do a good job for a decent music video filming. Cheers.

  • i bought that REEEAALLY cheap camera (not really).. i just paid 381,50 euros for that.. in supermarket.. dam im a lucky boy... but only one problem with it... guess what.. I didn't get the supply stuff yet. only camera and the bag.. so i get them in my mailbox in 3-7 days.. and then i really can start being a dood like you( exept the fun afro).... thx for these videos you made for us :D sry for my bad english skills. (14 years old boy trying to speak english...)..

  • pedo taking pics of ur gran

  • NOT boring !

  • 4 people are jerks

  • I have just got a d3100 but when i shoot in RAW the pictures will not open on my pc or in photoshop?!? Any help appreciated :)

  • I like this type of vid, very informative.

  • Oh yeah here it is "boom!" there it is! you crack me up sometimes Jared

  • She found the word "FOUND" :D

  • Dude you're awesome, I love these kind of videos, I'm getting my first Nikon D3100 and I'm really learning a lot from your videos

  • WHAT camera did you use to record this? and dose it actually film above 1080, 4k/2k?

  • what is this program you use it edit called. what do you recomend for windows.

  • love it how shes just sitting there doing the crossword. ha

  • awesome ;)

  • 20 40 the word she "found" is "found" heh couldnt help but notice, good video. all ur video's have helped me decide on if i wanted to buy this camera or not

  • Awesome Video Jared...I'm new to SLR, just got a D7000 and now ready to learn and take much better pics....I wanna learn more on RAW.....will have to buy the Apple Aperture since i use an iMac. Please keep sharing your expertise...Good job man :)

  • you really have different angles at your hair ! XD

    great vid !

  • Excellent tutorial ... I hope to see in the future a super secret project with the Nikon D7000 ... I will keep an eye on your publications, Greetings from Venezuela!

  • I love your videos, actually learn more here than in my college classes. I noticed you use Lightroom. CS5 is used by most of the students I know. I am a mom with 4 kiddos and I have just can't decide for next semester which program to buy. I like your results with Lightroom and believe less is more. Do you always use one or both? Thanks for your videos! Fro Knows Photo! :)

  • @SeptemberLynnDesigns I use lightroom to process all of my raw files. It is designed for photographers where CS5 is more for graphic designers in my mind. The work flow and organization is easier in lightroom but both will edit the raw files the same way.

  • Awesome tutorial, I really like the long extended videos, keep it up. Just ordered this camera today, my first DSLR. :)

  • I dont breathe when I shoot either :D

  • i like them together becuase i dont like clicking 2 different videos and i remember more becuase i can just go back in the video if i need to remember something

  • 20:19

    "... she found a word"

    -Sees the word FOUND-

"I don't know what word it is but she found it!"

Thats an awsome picture/coincidence. Love your videos Jared, started watching them due to a Nikon 3100 purchase but been watching em since!

  • what size photo do u think its better large medium or small?

  • He kinda looks like Alex from Madagascar !

  • I like the long format!!!!!

    I learnt a lot!

    Thanks a million!!!

    Keep them on!

  • wish i could afford a camera ike that , im an insiring PHOTOGRAPHER <3

  • thanks Jared for taking you time to upload these great vids - your my new Raw Guru!

    slainte!

  • What software were u using to edit the photos?

  • is the 35mm still 35mm when used with entry level DSLRs? you know, like how a 50mm becomes a 75mm.

  • @SwaggerDigital01 all the entry level DSLRs, nikon or canon, have cropped sensors. that's why the focal length changes.

  • i take the glasses off! LOL! I love your grandma...

  • i like it :)

  • hahaha WOW did you notice that the word lil found is actually "FOUND" take another look!

  • Great video! Thanks!

  • Brilliant............learning a vast amount. Thanks.

  • thanks for the tutorials it really helps...

  • i love lil :)

  • your grandma said: "don't bother me Fro!!"

  • I have my new d7000 know :D

  • this is a great video Fro.. hope to see more very informative videos like this from you.. and how about a D7000 with 35 f/1.8? show me some tricks with that setup please.. thanks

  • Great video and very helpful. Would love to see another one of these for the newbie (me) using the D3100 and the kit 18-55mm lens. And if the post editing could be on Aperture 3 that would be a bonus!

  • very helpful.....

  • Love the long form, thanks for the awesome tutorial!

  • How do you make the pics black and white?

  • This is a great series Jared. We all want to know how to get the most out of our cameras and justify the price difference of a DSLR from a p&s. The way you explain the different components of a photo makes this all attainable instead of thinking of a camera as a magic box. I know I will be doing a lot more with my D3000 than I expected a month ago. Looking forward to more of the "secret project"!

  • great video! Thanks!

  • excellent, learnt a lot!

  • excellent

    lots learnt

    thank you

  • Great video! Keep em coming! Thanks!

  • should make a spot on the websight where we can leave comments, Because thats where i watch all the videos while i am on the forum and such.

  • thanks for the videos!!! good stuff.

  • I've watched a few of your tutorial videos now. They're really informative, especially your d7000 vids. Thanks, man, Looking for ward to more of your videos.

  • She found the word "Found" LOL

  • Great video, and i like the long videos as well

  • Im really liking the longer videos that show the beggining where you explaining what your thinking while you shoot. all the way to the end where your tweeking the pics. Im beggining to get a real good idea of how to approuch taking good pics and how to come out with a good finished result. Really enjoying your work. Thanks!

  • She found the word, "found".

  • i like the long form vids man, you explain a lot and i catch a lot of it,, you just make things so much fun, i thank you very much bro.

  • Great video! Entertaining an informative, personally I don't like watching videos under 15 minutes long because then I have to go find another one to watch and it waists time looking. This was a good length!

  • well explained. thank you jared. keep em coming

  • This was actually the first video that I saw with you! And still one of the best. Nice long video with supermuch information. Perfect vid!

Just one thing, stop changing the titles into stupid things! Come on.

  • Great video! The 20+ minutes flies by when the information and presentation style is so good. Superb to see the whole work flow and hear your thinking on shooting and processing live as you do it. And the word Lil found was "found" :P

  • great vid and very helpful.. keep the long vids coming..

  • Great video, whole process of making photos from setting up the camera to getting pictures ready to print. I would like to see more of these.

  • I heard that holding your breath is alright but you could do better if you breathe like a sniper, breathe deeply and shoot on your exhale. Your muscles will be relaxed and will reduce camera shake. You should try it some time.

  • These long videos are VERY GREAT! Really! Explaining that way is much better for us to understand how you think and we start to figure things we haven't noticed before! So, more like these please [2].

  • more like this please

  • I liked what you said about using the book to create dimension. As long as the video is shooting and teaching at the same time (like this one was) instead of just talking or just taking photos, 20 minutes is fine IMO.

  • sir you said you shoot at iso 800 on d3000 wouldn't it take noisy pictures?

  • @jpbnto not really, i seem to do very well with it at 800

  • @JaredPolin do you go higher than iso 800 on the d3000? what's your work flow on removing noise using Lightroom? maybe you could make a video out of it? :D

and does lightroom have an unsharp mask filter? thanks

  • @jpbnto I have, i have done 1600 at concerts usually it goes black and white and i dont take noise out or use reduction of any kind in my images.

  • Sir Fro, this is quite possibly one of the most eloquent Photography videos I have seen on youtube. Subscribed and kind of getting addicted to your videos :-P

  • AWESOME! Never seen you before, kinda stumped upon this.Great great great!

20minutes+ is not bad at all. As you say, a lot of information. Thanks!

  • Lot of info there. I've got the 50mm 1.8 and love it, I just wish it were autofocus.

  • GREAT VIDEO... Learned Alot

  • wat kind of af area mode r u using???

    single point focus???

    Dynamic ??

  • @10540ikq I was in single focus so i licked in an recomposed.

  • Nice , Gracias es muy bueno y lo largo me parese excelente

  • I really like the longer vids more, thnx 4 the info

  • SHE FOUND THE WORD FOUND! :O WOW PARADOX :D

Thumbs up if you turned your head like Jared to read the word hahahah.

  • love seeing you in action, would love for you to do more videos like this!

  • i would like to email you a sample picture for u to see what i mean

  • I have another question, I took some pictures and I noticed that my cameras focus is kinda off. For ex. I focused on the head and it's focusing on the stomach or I'm focusing on the subject and it's focusing on the background. What do u think is wrong? Is it me or something wrong with the camera?

  • @NikonNewb it could be a lens thing but i would need more details on whats up.

  • This is an excellent lesson, I like the longer videos...

  • Hey jared which one would u go for a Nikon 24-70mm $1800 or a Nikon 17-55mm about 1400? Only 300-400 dollars on a d90

  • @NikonNewb Do you own a 70-200 yet? This is tough on a d90 as the 27-70 really isnt wide enough for most things. If you are going to stick with the d90 or DX sensor for a while il say 17-55 as you will still be able to sell i for 1100-1200 when the time comes.

  • Great video Jared! A few comments for you, what do you check in the view finder on the DX camera after you take a picture? Do you zoom in on your area of focus to make sure it's in locked in? And with regards to checking with the Histogram, do you have a video on how to read the graph? Shooting outdoor a lot I find with the sun and glare that checking the screen is useless because you can't read the screen! Oh were you using the auto setting for White Balance in this shoot?

  • @eltronjesus I am looking at focus when I zoom in, thats the most important to me, if the focus is locked i wana see it.

  • I love how you do this with material that beginners are likely to own, and show how to get most out of it.

  • great video !

  • I like the long videos instead the videos divided in parts

    keep it up Jared

  • Hi Jared, firstly your awesome and an amazing photographer, I was wondering if you cld give me advice on the 35mm f/1.8 lens? Taking into account im a photography student taking my A levels, so later down the line im going to be investing in a FX camera, is the older 35mm f/2 a better choice than the 35mm f/1.8? Thanks

  • @ferrarisucks53 new 35 1.8 is a killer one not to expensive either.

  • @JaredPolin thanks for the advice :)

  • @ferrarisucks53 depends on if your camera has a focus motor. The d3000 does not so the 1.8 will be better and cheaper. If you own a camera like the d90 and plan to buy a FX camera in the future, maybe the 2.0 will be a better investment.

  • nice couch, also a bit off topic. but what do you think of the DataColor Spyder Cube? is it worth the 45 euro?

  • @cookiepwnsU what is that?

  • @JaredPolin /watch?v=5hYXpsk01Xg

  • Awesome vid, motivated me to take the plunge off Aperture priority and experiment with Manual. Quick ques, after I've made my setting and shoot I notice my settings are different. My settings aren't fixed where I set them after I take a picture? What am I missing?

More of these vids, they are very educational to hear your thought process.

  • @4DSquad Not to sure why that would happen, it wouldnt happen in manual though.

  • @JaredPolin This problem is occurring while in Manual Mode

  • hi jared! i like the long vids a lot!

i have learned a lot from you vids

    keep going!

  • She found a word, I don't know what word it is, but she found it...

    The word is "found"

    What are the odds? :)

  • the white balance seems to be a bit off. I look at the skin tone, not the grays from the background. I understand that it is a bit hard with so many different light sources and their different temperatures

  • Since you've chosen Fro Knows Photos as your site name and such do you feel obligated to keep your fro?

What happens if you ever decide to cut the fro? will it just be "Knows Photo"?

  • Hey Jared would you recommend a Nikon 17-55mm or tamron 17-50mm on a dx body

  • @NikonNewb I love the nikon one back when i owned it.

  • thats a good wideo for starters.

  • Yea Jared these videos are great and informative for a newcomer like me, I am aspiring to use photography as a means of income and eventually take it on full time along with video editing and stuff, more videos like this one get me on track everyday thanks bro!

  • Yo Jared, I really like the approach you used in this video.

    You rock!
