this is just simply brilliant, i fall into a trance with this song while driving and find myself driving faster as the song progresses. gives me the chills.
To be honest with all of you, I never liked soprano sax. But this solo is giving me goose bumps that are about to fall all over the Earth. The rage and transitions were just so outstanding that made me feel like dying for more. Brilliance, class, whatever word you would like to use to describe, this is it. I don't even have to talk about the Trumpet Solo and Bass. All people have ears to hearts to appreciate them, except 1.
Just to clear stuff up, This is NOT Herbie Hancock, not only many commenters have pointed out the inconsistencies, but i've got an original copy of this disc, and on the booklet you can read credits for every song, for clutch they are as follows:
yo, this is very clearly not the VSOP quintet. There was no recording from VSOP in 1980 only 76 and 78 and there is no tune "clutch" on any of their albums. Correct please. Also, the A section is stolen from the turnaround on Jimmy Heath's "Big P". Still killin', but NOT VSOP. The pianist is clearly not herbie hancock.
New York musicians credited by the SEATBELTS * Drums: Jim Mussen, Bobby Previte, Tony Reedus * Guitar: Stuw Cutler * Piano : Mark Soskin * Bass: Booker King * Trumpet: Steven Bernstein * Trombone: Josh Roseman * Soprano Saxophone: Steve Wilson * Alto Saxophone: Bob Debellis * Tenor Saxophone: Paul Shapiro * Baritone Saxophone: Jim Hartog * Djembe: Mike Wimberly, Jonh McDowell
Well, I don't know about you guys, but I smell a silly little web scam right here. These are The Seatbelts indeed, and they are perfectly capable of putting up a tune like this one anytime of the day except breakfast perhaps. Whoever doubts it has beans for brains.
well since this is the group vsop( very special onetime performance), why not try looking the members of the band up: Ron Carter (bass), Herbie Hancock( piano), Tony Williams (drums), freddie hubbard(trumpet), wayne shorter(sax)
@22hka i recommend you "Bird and Diz" incredible album by parker and gillespie recorded in 1950. few names, beside charlie parker and dizzy gillespie, if you are interested in bebop: thelonius monk, art bakley, bud powell, max roach. enjoy! ;-)
uh, the CD liner notes give the following information: * drums - Yasuo Sano * bass - Tadashi Sase * guitar - Kazuhiko Michishita * piano - Yukiyoshi Arimasa * trumpet soloist - Tomonao Hara * saxophone soloist - Masato Honda
Also, I can't find any information about this song in Herbie Hancock's stuff. Also, this doesn't sound like what Herbie sounded like in 1980. I think someone was just being a smartass on Wikipedia.
what the hell are you talking about? this is the seatbelts, a japanese band led by yoko kanno. they also did "tank" and "bad dog no biscuit". i wouldn't call you a snob if you were right about the mistake, but i will call you an idiot and a prick since you wernt even right.
@sirrich0608 I can't find any proof of this being a Herbie tune. What album is it from and/or where would I find some evidence proving this? Also, who is playing guitar? There is clearly a chorused out guitar throughout the whole thing. That seems to be the one thing everybody forgets to mention. Unless it's some sort of vintage keyboard I've never heard before.
@kwtrmln Can you post a scan of the CD liner? I've never seen any primary source showing this is not the Seatbelts. Only some anonymous editor from wikipedia says it's VSOP.
Alot of the Jazz from the Seatbelts reminds me of Miles Davis. Especially perhaps his album "Seven Steps to Heaven". If you like this then I'd STRONGLY recommend it ;).
@WowzaBoyz jazz is anything but boring, it can be abstract, straightforward, structured, wild, fast, slow, relaxing, energetic, its one of the most versatile forms of music (atleast to me) im glad this song has made you a believer, welcome!
Its actually the Herbie Hancock's V.S.O.P. from 1980. Kinda bummed and surprised when I found out it wasn't Yoko Kanno/Seatbelts, but then not surprised when you actually think about the difference in calibre between this and a lot of the other Seatbelts songs.
