The last speech "I'm not here" and "Asuka" are actually the voices from Anno who was the director and writer of Evangelion.
I think the whole live action scene is presenting a world with humans on their own normal life. It is the scene that Anno want we(the viewers of Evangelion) to see.
Why?
because Anno want we to get a impression of reality which is continuous and for our whole life. We could not leave the reality. So dreams are MEANINGLESS.
Half of the thrill of the series is its visual design, these live action sequence turds only take away the appeal of the amazing visual style from the anime.
@DeltaSquadGO I AM. THROUGH LICENSE OF THEY WHO ARE NAMED "GAINAX" I HAVE COME. THOUGH MY CREATION HAS BECOME DISTORTED BY MY OWN PERCEPTION OF REALITY, I HAVE COME. THIS SERIES HAS EXISTED SO FAR AT MY PLEASURE AND PATIENCE, AND THAT, AS YOUR WORKS OF OTAKUDOM, SHALL NOW COME TO AN END. I AM THE SUPREME CREATOR, LEADER OF A REVOLUTION. DEBATES SHALL BE HELD FOR DECADES FOR WHAT I LEAVE IN MY WAKE. I AM ANNO. I HAVE COME.
@hotelmario510 I imagine He gave all of Gainax that speech every workday while working on the show. And when Gainax decided to start work on Rebuild they were all like, "Dammit, now we gotta hear that speech from Anno every damn day again."
@DeltaSquadGO They tried duct-tape but it disintegrated under his crippling depression. Just the mere touch of him was enough to cause anything to lose the will to exist.
Anno Hideaki says"This is for all the men in the theater."
This is a re-re-imagining of the Evangelion universe. It's identical to the one where no Angels exist and everyone is normal. Except it's been fast-forwarded into its own future. And also, Shinji apparently never existed.
Was that him? Was that Shinji's disembodied voice saying "Asuka, I am not here." and apparently being heard? Sounds awfully deep for his voice, but it could have been the natural voice for his voice actor.
@Numbnut10 Actually, when Shinji says "Asuka" and "I'm not here." It's Anno voicing him. Why you may ask? Shinji afterall is trying to reach out to Asuka thus why Anno voiced him because Anno has a deep voice. Let's say Megumi Ogata (actual japanese voice of Shinji) voiced him here, would she really take it seriously?
...The world sure sucks without Shinji. Asuka has resigner herself to the bleakness and lonelyness of life, Misato swims in her filth and has no hope left, poor Touji had to become Asukas boyfriend (he had the worst fate of them all, I guess XD) and Rei could give Gendo lessons of being bitter.
Oh, TEH EASTETICS! TEH APPARTMENT COMPLEXES! TEHJ PHILOSPHY *in love* Anno you bloody, bloody genius! I love how the camera "follows" the broken, adult Asuka like it's Shinji trying to reach her/catch up with her. The bitter, pessimistic adult Rei is also a sad sight. She'salmost like a female Gendo... And then, Shinji calls out to Asuka and she turns around for just a second... and walks away. Such artistic beauty. Such sadness...
Didn't you pay attention to the last two episodes? It's yet another view, image, whatever, another version of life that Shinji saw in his mind, created to sort of show another possibility of what could happen.
In short, it's just another possibility of a world without him. That's what he wanted, and it was shown to him.
It is kindof pointless though. Its just another scene that could of played out during instrumentality in Shinjis mind as he is trying to "shape his own world." None of that ever actually happened in the series, just like the whole Asuka and Shinji being childhood friends thing never happened that was shown in episode 25 or 26. Just another simulation run as Rei is trying to show him how he can change his own world with nothing more than his own mind.
A seen from Instrumentality, when Shinji's looking for a reason to continue on. This was a world that, as Shinji himself said, he isn't in.
This was a world where Asuka and Toji get together and, from the looks of it, there weren't any angels or Evangelions.
A parallel world that lacks Shinji. Of course, we all know, Shinji DOES find a world where he can be happy. However they made that into 'Angelic Days'.
this is definitely one of the most interesting scenes in the end of evangelion movie. wonder why ano deleted it. hope they include this one if ever the live action movie does push true. the las time i heard they're nearing the deal somehow.
Live action move will never happen, and frankly I hope it doesn't. I dont want to see an all Japanese cast come in and perform this. The animated people look like Americans more than they do Japanese anyway. Nope, I am very happy just to watch the sequel to the entire eva series Evangelion 1.0-4.0. This is NOT A REMAKE, but it is a sequel. Everything is basicly reset by shinjis will. Just check it out. you will love it.
@ffffleet : Debateable. In my opinion the ones who DO look Japanese are Shinji, Rei, Gendo, Kaji, Misato, Toji, and that's it. Asuka is obviously a white girl, but she was made to look more that way cause she is half German and all. Oh yeah, and it IS a Remake/Re-imagining. The creator himself said that with these movies he will tell the Evangelion story in a better way than he did before because he now sees how confusing the original story may be.
@flamerounin ...because the movie would get to long, I guess. There is also an ending song they didn't use and other drafts for the ending... and earlier drafts of EoE which had consiberably more screentime for Gendo, for instance.... I guess all the alternatives are parts of the big work of art (like Rebuild). This show is all about Shinji realizing he HAS alternatives/the ability to improve.
@gatotsu911 Yeah, I wonder why they didn't use Shinji's voiceover for the end bit? Because it confused me as to whether it was him or not, at first. But on reading the link included, it was him. Just...without Megumi Ogata...weird.
@Pr3ttyL0v3 Perhaps it was suposed to be an "adult" Shinji? He hardly would still have his cute beaten puppy voice if he had aged as much as BleakFuture!Asuka.
As for her hair: She might habe dyed it not to stand out, emphasizing how sje resigned herself to that bleak life of hers. That and they didn't want to put the actress in a wig.
@KendrixTermina : Not to mention that I doubt you can find any Japanese actresses out there with blue, red, and yellow hair. At least back in the late 90s when this sequence was made. I'm sure there's at least some out there now like that.
This was really great. I'm guessing that that was Shinji's voiceover in the end there; so I'd have to entertain the idea that this would be the world without Shinji. How dull and ordinary it is, but at the same time it's a really good possibility compared to the storyline of the series...

This is pretty cool, but I'm glad they left it out. The live action sequence that was actually used is 80,000 times better, especially with the music.
if ur talking about gaara's comment , he means when everyone turns into LCL and asuka and shinji are the only one's alive.and Gaara, ur not the only one confused about the ending.
okej... anyone who is out there and have seen the end of evangelion or even the hole anime. plz tell me.... WHAT THE FUCK HAPPEND!!!! shinji and azuka was lying on a beach and then he ...(SPOILER NOOO SHIT) kills her and i was like ....ok wtf happend? it was the most confusing thing i ever seen and then she says discusting (YEYE I KNOW IM A BAD SPELLER) and it ENDS!!! WTF IS THAT FOR KIND OF A BAD ENDING maybe i missed sumthing but PLZ OH PLZ send me a message ASAP!
Hey gaara,,, if u want to be out of dobuts, why don't you search in the Jew Bible The Genesis, or look in the internet some of this stuff, it took me a lot to understand some things, like in the end...it looks, like only 2 are alive. shinji and asuka..but that's not true...find the 3rth one.. and i will explain you more things =).. hope eveyone understands all the situation
@Gaara123666 : It doesn't take much thinking to understand that Asuka, and Shinji are the only ones left on Earth, and are the new "Adam" and "Eve" or "Eva". Get it?
where do u guys get your stats from did i miss an entire evangelion series or something i've watched the film end of evangelion quite a few times but the parts of the live actiopn are short blips i also own every manga book fomr yoshiyuki sadamoto and fuyimi something or rather i need intel people im an eva addict
i heard theyre planning on bringing the movie out as a directors cut or something with this sequence included. apparently it is planned for 2007 but i think arguing for the rights of the movie (adv have the series, manga entertainment has the movie) is slowing it down somewhat
Just curious as to wether it's possible to buy this and still have the english subtitles, I really like Hideaki Anno's way of depicting everyday life. I think in End of Evangelion there was a live action sequence of Anno looking out at Tokyo from the window of a train.
Another beautiful way that Anno brings forth his themes..in this case whether Shinji is there or not..he has no effect on Osyka's behavior...kind of the opposite of It's a Wonderful Life...the same theme that concluded the TV series(and the End of Eva))..real effectiveness and happiness can only come from within
This is brilliant! I had no idea that they'd actually filmed it! I really like the idea of Shinji being shown two different 'alternate' realities, neither of which are ultimately satisfying. Thankyou so much for posting!!
Rei's voice (left): "You were taking revenge on reality with convenient dreams." Shinji's voice: "Is that bad/wrong?" Rei's voice (right): "You were fleeing into dreams, and glossing over the truth." Shinji's voice: "Is it wrong to dream!?" Rei's voice: "That is not a dream. It is just an illusion. A compensation for reality." The film rips suddenly. (special effects) Cel animation screen appears suddenly
Thanks for posting this vid it made alot more sense when watching it and the end of Eva all over again because it gives of sense of Shinji's other choice of not existing in the world. ^_^
Thank you so much for posting this excerpt from Anno Hideaki's "Love and Pop". I've been looking for a copy of this in its entirety for years! For those who don't know, this was Anno's project AFTER NGE, and he included scenes from it in End of Evangelion. For those who DO know, does ANYONE know where I can see the whole thing???
I like this better than the confusing clip they used in the movie. No matter how times I watch it, I always come up with some strange answer in my head for why its even exsistant. But this makes sense... It's a wrold where he doesn't exsist, like he wanted, as said by the other people whose said it.
Weird's the right word. I was just complaining about the fact that Asuka has no red hair and neiether blue eyes: in fact, in this sequence she's an ordinary japanese schoolgirl, duh <.<"
I never liked End of Eva (or , heck , any of Eva...sans the music and EVA units) but I think that this sequence is more effective AND enjoyable than the live-action one used in the movie , why Gainax didn't chose to keep this one is beyond me , but it works better.
This scene would have given the ending of the film a far greater impact had it been left intact with the original live-action sequence. And an even greater impact had the whole thing been left animated.
Good stuff here. I agree with BIGMIKE130, who said below:
"it makes alot of sense shinji chose not to live in this world and this is the world where he does not live thats why at the end he says "im not here"
It's not a theory, she's said it. I don't remember where, in fact, it might have been only in the manga, but... Her mother was Japanese, her father, a sperm doner, was American (to my knowledge) and she was born in Germany. Her father could not be American, I think that might be rumour, but... The rest is true.
This is like....a parallel universe, remember the one episode where shinji concocted in his head wat it would be like if there were no angels and no NERV? this i guess is sorta like that
Shinji sees these two alternate realities, and realizes that neither is the truth - reality cannot revolve around him (as in the romantic comedy setup), yet it need not eliminate his existance. Ultimately, he sees that HIS "reality" is somewhere between the two; the world will not stop for him, but he can make a difference to the people he's close to. It's a very powerful message, really.
I apologize I didn't phrase that statement well. What my complaint over isn't that he rejects that existence, its why he is able to affect it. If Shinji is simply observing this "reality" and doesn't exist there, he shouldn't be able to say anything that would draw Auska's attention. That would be like someone watching a horror movie and say "don't go in there" and the person hears, and responds.
I just wanna say that the voice at the end seems a bit too big to just be Shinji. I think it is in a way Shinji, but I also think that voice is a parallel for a God figure. Like a creator or a force of fate is not present. If this is part of the series ending, this would imply that each person became their own personal God. If this is connected to the movie, each viewer is their own Shinji and no one can watch something that they are a part of.
The actresses in this are the voice actresses of Asuka, Misato and Rei. The song played in the background 35 seconds in is Jesus, Joy of Man's Desiring, by Bach which we still get in the film's acutal version of the live-action style "dream world". ^_^
Shinji created a world where he didn't exist. He watches the world as it would be if he had never existed. Sort of like how Rei is watching Shinji in the first episode of Evangelion when he is looking for Misato. Then Shinji realises that the world would be no different if he was alive or not and then the live action movie goes back the anime...evangelion is deep!
Ummm...In this live action part Shinji imagines a world where he doesn't exist. He rejects that world though. After Instrumentality takes place both Shinji and Asuka wake up on the shore because they became normal people living in the real world. Both Shinji and Asuka could 'remember themselves' so they were able to reject instrumentality also^^. Its a bit hard to explain...but if you have any more questions please ask!
Actually I don't know about this. I thought it was because Asuka was disgusted at how pathetic Shinji was after he broke down crying. The phrase means 'How disgusting' rather than 'I feel sick'...There are many things which Shinji did which might disgust Asuka I think^^. Remember? LOL.
That's not the reason she said "how disgusting"...if u have seen before the movie with the commentaries...it explains the reason. The reason is becasue when shinji went to see asuka to the hospital shinji tries to say sorry beacause of hurting asuka... asuka's mentality was - a man that could make me whatever he decides [rape] {because she was in coma}...but he only masturbates...that's why she said in the end..how disgusting, =) sorry if i didn't explain correctly im mexican
Or it could have just happened after End of Evangelion. Its all very possible, but not trying to be racist at all, Japanese people tend to do some lousy acting in Live Action things based on something. I mean the acting as in verbally is just fine, but they never even bother to look like the character at all (is it that hard to just dye your hair or wear a wig?). I guess im overexagerating but it makes me kind of mad
I'm Asian and I'd have to agree about the lousy acting from Japan. Their TV shows and music videos are all very corny. But the story more than makes up for it a lot of times. Oh and I'd rather they avoid using artifical coloring to closer resemble anime. Sailor Moon is an example of horrible cosplaying.
whoa! how'd you find this? I thought the live action people in the opening of the movie was just there for some odd purpose, maybe Hideaki Anno giving us a little message, but I didn't know there was like a whole thing of this! Will we be getting something like this in the U.S?
Odd, and mysterious. I don't really understand it, but then againI didn't put alot of thought into. However I must say it's directed and scripted superbly. o.O
True about the voice actors...but they dont look anything like the characters they are portraying. I know it would be weird to give Rei blue hair and things of that nature, but it seems you would at least try to capture some of the Animes aspects. I guess this takes place ten years into the future.
Yeah I know I guess Asuka ot reallt tan and turned asien you know the fact that she is GERMAN!!!!I dident reallt like this first time ive ever said that about anything to do with NGE.
I do think this is interesting, 'just don't see how it would fit in with the film. I do like the fact that the voice actress' repraised their roles for this, it's a nice touch. ^_^
Asuka was the one sleeping with Touji, and Rei was trying to give advice about the sitution. The other "girl" in the video (who was shown waking up after the scene with Asuka waking up) was Misato.
Thank you SO much for uploading this! I'd read the translation of the script before, but I never suspected that (a) it was ever filmed or that (b) any copies of it survived or (c) would ever appear in a form/medium accessible to ordinary American fans. It's really ... an honor.
i have to say that thank god this was left out of the movie! who the hell was it supposed to be? Was that Asuka or Misato? And why the hell was she talking about a boyfriend? Is this an alternative reality for them? What?
The last speech "I'm not here" and "Asuka" are actually the voices from Anno who was the director and writer of Evangelion.
I think the whole live action scene is presenting a world with humans on their own normal life. It is the scene that Anno want we(the viewers of Evangelion) to see.
Why?
because Anno want we to get a impression of reality which is continuous and for our whole life. We could not leave the reality. So dreams are MEANINGLESS.

Gaara123666 4 years ago
Hey gaara,,, if u want to be out of dobuts, why don't you search in the Jew Bible The Genesis, or look in the internet some of this stuff, it took me a lot to understand some things, like in the end...it looks, like only 2 are alive. shinji and asuka..but that's not true...find the 3rth one.. and i will explain you more things =).. hope eveyone understands all the situation
sayomask 4 years ago
@Gaara123666 : It doesn't take much thinking to understand that Asuka, and Shinji are the only ones left on Earth, and are the new "Adam" and "Eve" or "Eva". Get it?

i heard theyre planning on bringing the movie out as a directors cut or something with this sequence included. apparently it is planned for 2007 but i think arguing for the rights of the movie (adv have the series, manga entertainment has the movie) is slowing it down somewhat

Just curious as to wether it's possible to buy this and still have the english subtitles, I really like Hideaki Anno's way of depicting everyday life. I think in End of Evangelion there was a live action sequence of Anno looking out at Tokyo from the window of a train.
NightmareHippy 4 years ago
Another beautiful way that Anno brings forth his themes..in this case whether Shinji is there or not..he has no effect on Osyka's behavior...kind of the opposite of It's a Wonderful Life...the same theme that concluded the TV series(and the End of Eva))..real effectiveness and happiness can only come from within

Thank you so much for posting this excerpt from Anno Hideaki's "Love and Pop". I've been looking for a copy of this in its entirety for years! I like this better than the confusing clip they used in the movie. No matter how times I watch it, I always come up with some strange answer in my head for why its even exsistant. But this makes sense... It's a wrold where he doesn't exsist, like he wanted, as said by the other people whose said it.

I never liked End of Eva (or , heck , any of Eva...sans the music and EVA units) but I think that this sequence is more effective AND enjoyable than the live-action one used in the movie , why Gainax didn't chose to keep this one is beyond me , but it works better.
LEW2X 4 years ago 2
Wait... was this saying that Asuka and Touji were together?
Was that Shinji's voice in the end? Was this Asuka's alternate universe?
umbraemilitos 4 years ago
This scene would have given the ending of the film a far greater impact had it been left intact with the original live-action sequence. And an even greater impact had the whole thing been left animated.

1stpriority 5 years ago
I think she's suppose to be half German and half Japanese.
Dmasterman 5 years ago
Asuka's mother's name is Kyoko, and Asuka's name is, well, obviously Asuka.
Both are Japanese names, which also adds to the theory she's half.
MiyabiDesu 5 years ago
It's not a theory, she's said it. I don't remember where, in fact, it might have been only in the manga, but... Her mother was Japanese, her father, a sperm doner, was American (to my knowledge) and she was born in Germany. Her father could not be American, I think that might be rumour, but... The rest is true.

This is like....a parallel universe, remember the one episode where shinji concocted in his head wat it would be like if there were no angels and no NERV? this i guess is sorta like that
Pinkz88 5 years ago
This is Shinji's "brutal reality", a stark contrast to the "romantic comedy" sequence in the TV episode 26 - very deliberately so, I believe.
gatotsu911 5 years ago
Shinji sees these two alternate realities, and realizes that neither is the truth - reality cannot revolve around him (as in the romantic comedy setup), yet it need not eliminate his existance. Ultimately, he sees that HIS "reality" is somewhere between the two; the world will not stop for him, but he can make a difference to the people he's close to. It's a very powerful message, really.
gatotsu911 5 years ago
Why did they even have Shinji speak at the end? What he says doesn't even make sense with anything else.
Malevolous 5 years ago
it makes alot of sense shinji chose not to live in this world and this is the world where he does not live thats why at the end he says "im not here"
in the end of eoe he wuz given a choice
BIGMIKE130 5 years ago
I apologize I didn't phrase that statement well. What my complaint over isn't that he rejects that existence, its why he is able to affect it. If Shinji is simply observing this "reality" and doesn't exist there, he shouldn't be able to say anything that would draw Auska's attention. That would be like someone watching a horror movie and say "don't go in there" and the person hears, and responds.
Malevolous 5 years ago
Maybe it is implying that Shinji in a sense still exists in some way, even though he chose not to.
NightmareHippy 4 years ago
I'm so happy I found this clip with subs. ^^
MusicalAnime 5 years ago
The actresses in this are the voice actresses of Asuka, Misato and Rei. The song played in the background 35 seconds in is Jesus, Joy of Man's Desiring, by Bach which we still get in the film's acutal version of the live-action style "dream world". ^_^

animerox 5 years ago
I bet that scene means that there are 2 worlds:
A world with Shinji and a world without Shinji.
evangelian007 5 years ago
Shinji created a world where he didn't exist. He watches the world as it would be if he had never existed. Sort of like how Rei is watching Shinji in the first episode of Evangelion when he is looking for Misato. Then Shinji realises that the world would be no different if he was alive or not and then the live action movie goes back the anime...evangelion is deep!
xxPHOENIX80xx 5 years ago
Then what the ending means?
Because after instrumentality Shinji wakes up with Asuka beside him.
evangelian007 5 years ago
Ummm...In this live action part Shinji imagines a world where he doesn't exist. He rejects that world though. After Instrumentality takes place both Shinji and Asuka wake up on the shore because they became normal people living in the real world. Both Shinji and Asuka could 'remember themselves' so they were able to reject instrumentality also^^. Its a bit hard to explain...but if you have any more questions please ask!
xxPHOENIX80xx 5 years ago
So what did Asuka mean by the phrase I feel Sick?
evangelian007 5 years ago
Actually I don't know about this. I thought it was because Asuka was disgusted at how pathetic Shinji was after he broke down crying. The phrase means 'How disgusting' rather than 'I feel sick'...There are many things which Shinji did which might disgust Asuka I think^^. Remember? LOL.
xxPHOENIX80xx 5 years ago
But Asuka still cares about him, right?
evangelian007 5 years ago
Maybe she meant that the world around them is disgusting.
NightmareHippy 4 years ago
That's not the reason she said "how disgusting"...if u have seen before the movie with the commentaries...it explains the reason. The reason is becasue when shinji went to see asuka to the hospital shinji tries to say sorry beacause of hurting asuka... asuka's mentality was - a man that could make me whatever he decides [rape] {because she was in coma}...but he only masturbates...that's why she said in the end..how disgusting, =) sorry if i didn't explain correctly im mexican
sayomask 4 years ago
RadioCambodia 4 years ago
Or it could have just happened after End of Evangelion. Its all very possible, but not trying to be racist at all, Japanese people tend to do some lousy acting in Live Action things based on something. I mean the acting as in verbally is just fine, but they never even bother to look like the character at all (is it that hard to just dye your hair or wear a wig?). I guess im overexagerating but it makes me kind of mad
Zero829 5 years ago
I'm Asian and I'd have to agree about the lousy acting from Japan. Their TV shows and music videos are all very corny. But the story more than makes up for it a lot of times. Oh and I'd rather they avoid using artifical coloring to closer resemble anime. Sailor Moon is an example of horrible cosplaying.

Don't remind me.
evangelian007 5 years ago
whoa! how'd you find this? I thought the live action people in the opening of the movie was just there for some odd purpose, maybe Hideaki Anno giving us a little message, but I didn't know there was like a whole thing of this! Will we be getting something like this in the U.S?

Odd, and mysterious. I don't really understand it, but then againI didn't put alot of thought into. However I must say it's directed and scripted superbly. o.O
Jest 5 years ago
True about the voice actors...but they dont look anything like the characters they are portraying. I know it would be weird to give Rei blue hair and things of that nature, but it seems you would at least try to capture some of the Animes aspects. I guess this takes place ten years into the future.
vashstampeded 5 years ago
Yeah I know I guess Asuka ot reallt tan and turned asien you know the fact that she is GERMAN!!!!I dident reallt like this first time ive ever said that about anything to do with NGE.

I do think this is interesting, 'just don't see how it would fit in with the film. I do like the fact that the voice actress' repraised their roles for this, it's a nice touch. ^_^
SailorStarDust 5 years ago
Hikari, actually, sleeping with touji, who was listening to the advice of asuka to break up.
IndorilNerevar 5 years ago
Asuka was the one sleeping with Touji, and Rei was trying to give advice about the sitution. The other "girl" in the video (who was shown waking up after the scene with Asuka waking up) was Misato.
SailorStarDust 5 years ago
Thank you SO much for uploading this! I'd read the translation of the script before, but I never suspected that (a) it was ever filmed or that (b) any copies of it survived or (c) would ever appear in a form/medium accessible to ordinary American fans. It's really ... an honor.
