Me and my buds played this song after EVERY Flyers goal during the 77 playoffs and we would dance all around. The song did better than the 76-77 Fyers though!
He did bring the song home, but he also sang immediately after Bobbie Smith following the 1st and 2nd verses. @Nupedreams98 I'm "old, old school" saw both of them on stage back in college during the 70's... The Tempts got top billing, but The Spinners BLEW THEM AWAY !!! Back then you couldn't follow the Spinners.
Phillipe Wynne was that kind of singer that gives you goosebump he hade that stage presense like David Ruffin wow wish he would had stayed with the spinners.
Now THIS is how award shows used to be. Nice clean cut entertainment WITHOUT a bunch of antics, great singing, choreography and a kick ass band to boot!
That must have been some night - Aretha sang that night too - Ain't nothing like the real thing. Did the audience realise what a treat they were in for when the night began?
Stevie thought they grooved.............. which is good enough for me. And there is another brilliant singer I had never heard of before YouTube - Philipe Wynne!

I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes right now, just looking at this post and these beautiful brothers who put their heart and soul into this masterpiece. This is the epitome of soul music and there will never be another performance like this in our lifetime, nothing came on after them from that performance and you can bet that!
This is when they performed at the 1975 grammies...great performance! Also, you can catch a glimpse here and there from the back and the front of a man rocking back and forth. That is none other than Stevie Wonder!!!
It's true, Bobby was lead before Phillipe joined The Spinners. However, Bobby was having vocal issues, which lead to Phillipe leading most of the recordings, much to their success.
Yes, he was truly a great performer, and a great person. I had the awesome pleasure of meeting him in the '80's when had left the Spinners, and had just come off performing with the Funkadelics. One of the most down to earth brothers you'd ever want to meet. We found that we had common acqaintances, that came as a surprise. His voice and charisma was sorely missed with the Spinners.
@dvinediva2001 Philippe Wynne used to phuck Rodney stepp in the ass with a white John Holmes model strap on dildo back in the 70s.I know your boyfriend used to do anal work on your fat ass as well.

A former WEA Sales Rep NYC. Thanxxx Redd Allen, J Greenberg, Sal and the rest of the staff (Armet,Dave Joel Freidman) I enjoyed my job and live with the memories forever. Jamie
When I was a kid living in Compton my mother took me and my brother and sister to see Chinese Connection at the Compton drive-in, which was as the end of our block, but when we got home this show was on. I remember standing in her room after kissing her goodnight and staring at the TV watching this very show
Thanks so much for posting this! I saw them many times in the 70s and am so thankful. They were such great, consumate entertainers...I still listen to their double live album often. Phillipe was one of a kind, and the group's stageshow was the epitome of 70s soul.
This is what you call putting on a show!!! I have been looking for some PW coverage of his stage performance and you brought it!!! Thank you a million times!!! I saw him perform rubber band man on nat'l tv and thought he was having a breakdown, now I see he was just doing his thang!!!!! man thank you for this you solved a mystery in my past!!!
Real music and great performance. The industry needs to bring this type of talent back to the stage and on records. Music is slowly dying with the crap that plays now a days.
This is one of the most classy groups from the 70s to date era!! The industry should consider bringing back this type of talent and performance. R&B and Hip Hop is slowly dying with the junk they are playing now a days!
Saw this dynamic group at the Greek Theatre in the '70's. Philippe Wynne, {birth name philip walker} brought the house down. From what I've read Philippe had earlier tried out with the Contours before replacing G.C. Cameron with the Spinners. Philippe, was a loner and a troubled soul who later went out on his own. I believe he died of a heart attack, while performing at Ivey's a club in Oakland. The man had some pipes.
@huntersivins UPPY's owned by NFL great GENE UPSHAW..was located in downtown Oakland,Jack London Square......................Uppy's On the Square,The Lucky Lion in East Oakland,Silks in Emeryville......the early 1980s in Oakland were nice..
@huntersivins He did die of a heart attack.. A nurse and cop were in the audience and tried to revieve him but he died... I love him so much!! He was a loner true.. Couldn't sing Sadie sent him crying in the studio..// He is one of my all time favorites!!! Wish I could of shook his hand!!! His voice is my life!
Watching this makes me feel so wonderful inside. I love the song but it's watching this very performance and the joy these guys share, esp. Phillipe Wynne, that makes me feel so good. It's like watching and listening to sunshine.
@JaysCountrymoma no worrys , yea he was a diamond , you'll never see talent like this on X-factor or american idol eh lolol , thanks for the comment , v1
Man, seeing this just makes me realize how far POP music in general, R&B in particular and the GRAMMYS have fallen in the last generation. Nobody puts on performances like this anymore. These days its all about SPECTACLE!
when this song first came out it got a lot of play on the radio. but i didn't think it was so good at the time. and i know now that it's because i wasn't ready to appreciate this level of music. because it sounds powerful now. another gem from the early-mid 70s era. good job!
@poppad48 Rodney Stepp was on " Q" that night...I remember the show back in 1975.Do you know if he still travels with the group ?? I believe their conductor Mr.King died several years ago. Well let me listen to it one more time !!!
"Mighty Love" "Live" at The Grammys: I do recall this night vividly. Iy was a spine chilling performance by The Spinners. One of the greatest performance lice in Grammy History. One day there will be another award ceremony where the votes by the members really does count. This was one of those occassions...
racourdave - you know what your talking about.. phillipe had a wonderful voice and was wonderful person and spirit and unfortunately the drugs took his life. one of my favorite voices to hear of all time.

Talents like that...they are just so rare now. Some of my other faves (sorry but not sure which are still alive) are: lead singer of Isley's, D. Ruffin, Teddy P., B. Womack, O'Jay's lead singer, J. Taylor, Bros Johnson, Main Ingred., B. Benton, L.L. Smith, and for more current...TT Darby, Marc Dorsey, A. Hamilton

Real music and great performance. The industry needs to bring this type of talent back to the stage and on records. Music is slowly dying with the crap that plays now a days.
keithmikell 1 year ago
@keithmikell people are also dying with the current music trap

Man, seeing this just makes me realize how far POP music in general, R&B in particular and the GRAMMYS have fallen in the last generation. Nobody puts on performances like this anymore. These days its all about SPECTACLE!

@Odawg96 i agree 100% - today people dont realize that weird, is not talent...the public has dummied down to what we consider talent

when this song first came out it got a lot of play on the radio. but i didn't think it was so good at the time. and i know now that it's because i wasn't ready to appreciate this level of music. because it sounds powerful now. another gem from the early-mid 70s era. good job!

To the person who wanted to know if Billy Preston is on keyboards, the answer is no. That is Indianapolis' own Rodney Stepp.

"Mighty Love" "Live" at The Grammys: I do recall this night vividly. Iy was a spine chilling performance by The Spinners. One of the greatest performance lice in Grammy History. One day there will be another award ceremony where the votes by the members really does count. This was one of those occassions...
