definitely one of my favourite anime, only downer was the story kinda dwindled away at the end, not the most satisfying conclusion, but what an epic story.
I have to ask, does the novel "The Twelve Kingdoms" written by Fuyumi Ono have pictures in it like a manga or is it just all letters. I want to buy them on amazon.
This anime deserves more attention. I'd actually love to see a remake of it, as long as it's not butchered. Another take on this story would be interesting.
whoaaa i used to watch it when i was 8 XD yah i know a bit too violent but hey, i was a death note and gants fan when i was 10 XD (and a major DBZ fan when i was 5)
DAMN I LOVE THIS FRKN Story, I think The BOOK IS AMAAZZIINNG, THE ANIME IS GREEAAT!, I AM obsseessed, wih tthis. :) can't wait for the 5th english book to come out, :D
This is THE most unusual Anime Opening Song I've ever heard. The opening itself is unusual - tapestries and maps instead of characters. Definitely not what I'm used to, but the series sounds REALLY good. I'm seriously considering watching it, from what I've heard ...
Does it have a proper conclusion, though? Not necessarily one which says EVERYTHING is wrapped up, but one which puts paid to the core storyline ...? Because I hate watching a show which doesn't end on a good resolution.
@AvatarWho Yea it does sort of. It has a certain episode that's a perfect for the series (it even has credits like an ending) but it has an extra arc after that is not as satisfying. But since you can technically say the series ended already, you can view that final arc as an extra.
I absolutely love sweeping epics and I feel this is one of the best, if not the best anime in that aspect. Also a great character study, if you like seeing characters constantly evolve and grow.
@HikariBun You came a bit late - I recently finished watching the series.
And actually, I really liked the final arc of the whole story. Sure, it wasn't the very best part of the show, but it was nice, quiet, and brought some new stories and resolutions to the fore. I LOVED the last few minutes of the last episode since it really added to the 'day in the life' feel of the series.
I LOVED the characters. Youko, Suzu and Shoukei were especially interesting, and I absolutely ADORE Rakushun.
@HikariBun D'you know that the series was based off a series of novels by Fuyumi Ono? There are still some more stories that they didn't make into the series, but it might be for the best. The novels aren't complete but then, the story is basically neverending. However, in the novels Youko isn't really the only protagonist - she features in the most books, but not all are about her: only 4/11 are. The story arcs about Enki and Shouryuu, and Taiki, are based off different books.
@HikariBun However, the author has said she intends to return to the 'Twelve Kingoms' eventually; though the last book she wrote was 9 years ago she'd been doing other stuff since then.
Actually, the one part that didn't satisfy me was Taiki's ending. It felt jarring that we ended so abruptly. Granted it hasn't been resolved in the books either, but it's still further along and actually explained WHY he was in his current situation.
Sugimoto and Asano are anime-only characters, BTW.
@AvatarWho Wow, three straight replies. Yo must have really loved it. xD Oh yea, I've read all of the novels except Demon Child. I'm still waiting for the conclusion pf Taiki's story. In the novels, Youko and others were able to bring Taiki back, but he lost his powers....It's nice that Fuyumi Ono has other novels that were turned to anime as well, but I'd like a closure on Taiki and the missing king.
@balder1981 The Tai/Taiki story arc hasn't been completed because it wasn't finished in the novels the anime is based off either. It's actually further along in the novels but not yet resolved - the reason it was cut short though was because the story was being told to Youko, since the anime features her as the protagonist. She's used as a framing device for other stories, and the stories are used to educated both Youko and the audience.
@balder1981 It's possible that there is a connection that's not yet explained. Novel series author Fuyumi Ono has said that she's not quite done with the books and will eventually resume writing them. When she does I imagine more will be explained. Among other things, we will hopefully see Taiki's arc fully resolved (to the point of returning to Tai and finding Gyousou), and perhaps we'll see a more of the other kingdoms. We've seen enough of Kei and En - how about Ryuu,Han,Sou,Ren,Shun, etc?
@UruvielLissesul how can you love it if they didnt have the wrighter didnt even finish the story? sure it was a good story b4 but what about after? the wrighter stoped wrighting and so doomed the 12 kingdom series to disscontinue....
well i watched all 46 episodes...and it sort of finished sort of didnt finished, like i did wanted to watch more on how she rules of being the new queen, but even though it doesnt continue how it ended is a good ending as well!!! i dont think it doomed the series.
Does the anime not have a proper ending? Because while I love good stories, I find it frustrating if they don't have a proper conclusion (SO many Western Cartoons end up like that ...)
@NUMBER13ROXASOWNS The author has stated that she intends to eventually return to writing the novels after a while, but right now she has other ideas she wants to get out. Considering she'd devoted 10 years to producing the first lot of TK novels, I can't blame her.
The anime didn't adapt the whole lot because they decided to focus more on Youko's stories. Maybe when more material is produced they will adapt a second season of TK with it, and focus more on other people's stories.
OH.MY.GOSH. I MISS THIS SO MUCH!!!! I watched this anime back in elementary when I was in 5th grade!! Which is like... 7 years ago ! I always considered this the best opening theme EVER, despite the fact it doesn't have any lyrics. I think it's best as it is. :) Ah, I felt the same way as you did; I was super annoyed of Yoko, but I came to like her when she matured for the role of queen of her kingdom. I named my dog after one of the characters, Kirin. :D
Everyone should read the novels too, :D Too bad there are only three books with official translations for English... personally I find them better than the anime. The anime ended rather abruptly...
@Solitaryhowl There are four books officially translated. There are actually 11 books (Though I think they might have combined a couple of the books into one because some books were in two parts.) in all, but the publishing company (Tokyopop) went bankrupt before the other books were translated.
lol, its so true! I hated how yoko was such a cry baby at first. Now I can't stop watching it! This anime is by far the best I've ever seen, why it doesn't have more recognition is beyond me x,x
@sorryIeverleft 'Twelve Kingdoms' was written by a woman, so it makes sense that the majority of central characters be girls. For me it was a breath of fresh air, since most fantasies feature male heroes - even many female authors write more compelling male characters than female *cough*J.K.Rowling*cough*.
Why do they assume people only watch characters JUST like them? Girls like boy heroes, so why can't boys like girl heroes? Especially cool ones like Youko. Or complex like Shoukei and Suzu.
WOAH! Did anyone else hear the pirates of the carriabein main theme in there? (like at 1:05 and on?) Maybe the chorister for Pirates got some inspiration *copied* from this anime?
@dracotharpian Mmmmm... have you seen the talented Mr. Ripley ??? With Matt Damon. See and hear it. Specialy hear the incidental soundtrack... all anime Soundtrack music.
Just because Disney has a lot of money doesn't change the fact that their music composers are too untalented to write their own scores. You would realise a lot of the soundtracks in POTC definitely have been copied from elsewhere if you bothered to go find out.
@dracotharpian Fuck you. Hanz zimmer has been making music long before this came out. (2007) He made gladiator in 2000, which used that same riff thing guy, whatevs. Which was reused by Hanz in Pirates.
@dracotharpian i think the style of the violins is the same genre, i mean there are many things you can do with a violin but i think it is not inspired into this
@dracotharpian nahh for me it doesn't sound like the intro for pirates of the carribien, it sounded something right beside of it, but not exactly like it if you get what i mean ;)
