@Holidats If you look at the helmets they are all marked with roster numbers indicating this video is from the U.S. Army Airborne School at Fort Benning
Jumping is not play tme with Sally. It's hard work under stessful conditions with very awkward and heavy gear. On my last jump with the 82nd INfantry, I was supposed to get a cherry jump with no equipment. But, nobody had enough time or jumps to jump in a Dragon anti tank weapon, so I had to do it.
The origtinal video above is a combination of bad jumps, probably young jumpers, heavy equipment...everybody has a bad jump, it's risky business.
anyone who doesnt believe this should listen to blood on the risers. its a song written about a failing chute athough his exit was good. so dosalt yes there is a massive risk.
BLOOD ON THE RISERS IS DEFEATIST BS! The whole point of these videos and our work is to IMPROVE AIRBORNE WARFARE not give-in to fatalism bred by snobbery and technocomplacency.
@dynmicpara nothing replaces good training to begin with. I had the good fortune to have had some of the best instructors available and it showed. Worst injury was a pulled muscle. Great video.
I never realized these types of problems happened. I always figured as long as you were hooked up to the static line everything was good to go once you jumped. Thanks for enlightening us.
was this there first time, I don't think its easy with 150 lbs of gear and the plane going what 150 mph. Ive jump out of air planes for fire fighting and we caring close to 200 lbs of gear.
My dad told me a story about a one of his jumps during training, he was the last one in the row (Which is not particuliarly a comfortable place to be), and the person in front of him was a women, when she got up to the door to jump out she hesitated and froze up for a good 5 seconds or so, and then proceeded to jump head first out the door like a dive into a swimming pool. My dad looked at the jump master and the jump master looked at my dad, he told me they both looked like they saw a ghost.
Well, it's easier to just sort of fall out with all your gear on. That's what most of us end up doing...these guys should be grateful to be jumping from a c17
Yes, all your equipment really does weigh that much. You put up with it not so much because you are "tough", but because you have no choice. You get cynical. Builds character. You are usually pissed off to begin with because been standing for 40 minutes because the AF had to racetrack. LOL. Glad I'm a civy skydiver now. Dont miss that BS. But, still... Airborne!
my byofriend is paratrooper as well and i hope stuff like that will never happen to him... accidents in that job happen from time to time but when people die thats sth. completely different.
wow.. i see wat you mean.... when i go to jump school i will make sure i will jump right... these guys are spinning and shit , those chutes could easy tangle it seems like....
I don't see why you practice that jumping technique. To me it seems like it has a much higher failure rate than how we jump: hands and legs wide apart, taking alot of wind, making yourself as stable as possible rather than letting yourself be thrown around like a rag.
Cause you don't jump spread eagle with a static line. Static line is intended for immediate chute opening versus a civilian jump where you ride the air for a few
Ahhh the good ole days, made many an exit, and I admit probably a few of my first jumps in the 82d were similar to these, it takes a while to get used to all the gear after jump school and those first 5 hollywood blasts. This is the main reason Ft Bragg started implementing mandatory mock tower and jump refresher to help with poor exits. 34' Tower doesn't really help with exits, just landings.
LMAO!!!! This was great. I was on one jump from a Casa, and despite the briefing, this meathead tried to spring up and out, instead of just walking off the tailgate. He was tall, too--sprang up, hit his head, fell straight down with his para pack catching the edge of the ramp, which flipped him head first out the plane. Wish I had a video of that! LMAO! Gave him hell on the ground.
where are you stationed? cuz we had our first jump cancelled this tuesday and just had two more yesterday and today.. todays dec. 4 just to clarify.. and im in vicenza and jumped in aviano
Ooooo that last one made me nervous. The rest had me absolutely laughing my ass off. "Welp, think I'm just gonna slump down on the floor here and slide out of this here plane like a dead carcass." Classic. Wish I could have seen the jumpmaster's face on some of those.
LOLOLOL...... Great vid. I had one bad exit in jump school. My right elbow was out like a rudder. I spun around 3 times and had a twist up to the apex.
You are right! I switched-out the original snobby, mocking rap music for the current up-beat, can-do, blues music. I am not bitter at life and I don't think its justified to mock jumpers doing bad jump procedures with obsolete gear; the latter is what needs to be fixed.
Round is sound: failure rate is 1 in every 64, 000 jumps; square parachutes 1 in every 250 jumps...this is why we need a Plan C airbag system for the lower back as our videos propose

You are packed into a tin can like sardines, you drank too much last night, and the guy next to you decided to piss his pants instead of waiting to get to the drop zone. Oh yea, you are rigged with 100 lbs of combat equipment and your a/c was parked a 1/2 mile from parachute issue.
these guys are hard asses - i would never get herded out the door like cattle like that - read M ashers books - (shoot to kill) gives a great descripton what these guys go through when they are crows at the depot - and what it takes to be a para - (hats off guys)
1978 82nd FT.Bragg - Cherrie saw Top do the "Bunny Hop". Cherrie bunny hopped but not far enough. Cherrie is now sitting in the door of C-141, eyes shut, hand on rip cord grip, counting "1k, 2k". Jump Master saved is life by kicking him in the head & chute, propelling him out the door. LOL.
when I first got to the 82nd in '87, I was made an A.G. (assistant gunner for M-60). I weighed 175 pounds when I was at Cherry Hotel. My gear -- main chute, reserve, ruck, 9mm Beretta, ammo, web gear, Kevlar, yady yada -- weighed as much as I did when I exited the airplane -- ALWAYS at night, ALWAYS a 141. All the way, sir!
I very am surprised that the Yanks have'nt sorted this, they are usually flexible.Having a "choice" which leg to jump with is so wrong.I did my basic Brit course in '66 the rule was
starboard stick right foot forward, port stick left foot forward. On " Action Stations" you move towards the door as a stick with (starboard stick)all leding with the right foot all the way. Your trailing foot never advances in front of your lead foot.
"u 2nd guess urself at the door b4u jump and it usually shows. i was scared b4 every jump but thats wat kept me focused. always told myself, make sure i keep my buddies safe and did my part correctly. weak and improper exits affect the man behind u. honestly, if it makes any sense to the civilians out there, their safety is more important than ur own.
What happens to the person that exits weak, as they spin around in circles in the air while their parachutes opens? Do they land correctly or what happens? This video is missing what occurs after they exit wrong. The video is good to watch.
they exit weak and they have to correct their chutes before they hit the ground. usualy by grabbing the risers with thumbs pointed down and kicking like crazy till your risers untwist.
The worst exits I had were always twisted risers. That kicking your legs training and reaching high up to untangle risers works! Thus far only a couple super man exits that I recall. I was always half asleep going out the door.
When I went through jump school, they really stressed attention to detail, and proper procedures. I felt I was well instructed, maybe I got just lucky. I think the main problem with airborne, and most training in the army is the mass production factor. You have to train lots of people, many of whom are substandard, and do it many times with substandard instructors. Yeah you could wash them out but what happens to the needs of the army, you have to fill ranks.
i'll tell you one thing 4/25 never jumps this fucked up. thats probably due to the fact that we conduct a basic airborne refresher before every jump. this shit is just too easy to screw up.
hiliarious,,,,i was in the duece back in 94-97. too bad they dont show some bad plf's. skysharks and idiots jedisoning their gear 300 ft in the air collapsing my chute. of course theirs nothing like watching a cherry lT getting up off the ground with some didrt and grass in their mouth.
Maybe you will get off your couch now and DO SOMETHING TANGIBLE to improve our Airborne instead of resting on the hard work of those who gone before us?
Jumping yes, 16th Air Assault also has Scimitar light tanks and Spartan APCs...we really need to get our act together beginning with better jump procedures, drogue activated parachutes and M113 Gavin TRACKS....
Not sure why an Paratrooper would want to jump higher!!!! In the british Para the emphasis is to jump as low as you can go.
The point about the Landing is a great one, I remember doing a Jump with a frigging Helicopter on the DZ ! and the Wedge was always a mess once it hit the ground.
Im an ex-rigger with E co. 782 82nd Airborne Division! The problem with that is that we jump at 800ft! If u have ever seen CDS drop for non-breakaway...its WITH a pilot chute & look how many burn in! The static line /d-bag assembly is actually the best method for LOW ALTITUDE ENTRY...its just that they beat us to death by rigging 25 per day...u are forced to take "shortcuts"! If we didnt have that "Qouta" then we could make the opening more smoother!!!
Drogue chutes so we can jump higher and faster (300+ mph) and not need 2 safeties to pull in static-lines and d-bags so we can not get shot down, achieve surprise and get more combat power on the DZ is more important than keeping American Airborne in comfort zones of narrow-mindedness.
A CDS bundle with drogue chute is much heavier than a Paratrooper and is old technology; Russian drogue chutes data says they open in same time and altitude loss as static-lines and d-bags with the same reliability. You are not comparing human drogue chutes with human static lines/d-bags. The American Airborne is on its ass and is full of convenient BS excuses (like observing our crappy CDS bundles) to not make tangible progress. The time has come to LEAD.
First my respect to all paratroops over the world. You are doing a hard job.
But do they really carry the double of their own weight? Cause if they i cant image than someone can stand with that weight in a 200-300 mph fast airstream without falling away. Another...it have to hurt like hell when the helmet of the trooper is cutting away from the parachuteline. unbelievable
Been there a few times(Bco. 2/505th), no thanks to the pilots and there Airforce BS! You every find that heavy drop on a night jump that DZSO failed to put a chem light on? Perfect or not, I would do it all again.
Ex-82nd Airborne here. What about bad dz landings. I still laugh about the time I literally landed on top of my squad leader at Ft. Irwin(NTC). The sight of him trapped inside my canopy was priceless.
yea this is serious stuff. my bro currnetly in his 3rd week of ABS had 1 of his buddies have his whole left arm tissue ripped off because his static line was wrapped around his arm at deplyment
Maybe if our static lines only had to open a packtray and have a drogue chute pop-out there'd be less danger than our current static-line-open-pack-tray-and-d-bag system? The Russians jump higher and faster and the Brits can jump far lower than us; we need to make drastic improvements to our Airborne.
Realize that KNOWLEDGE overcomes FEAR when we practice smartly instead of this deliberate, "Blood-on-the-Risers" snobby crap that keeps people in the dark so some can fail and make us feel like big shots.
Ok, I know nothing about jumping... What happend to the trooper who, during the aftward shot, went spinning away like a corkscrew ? @ 3:40 What would he have done at that point to recover ?
Great Video! This is one of the real video footages of Airborne Paratroopers. Mass Exit at night is even better. Well for me, every jump was a night jump.
The only thing that matters to me when the light goes green is that Static line & the 1st step out the door!!! I want to keep my static arm & neck intact. I didn't know why there were so many accidents back in the days, now I know!! Lack of (individual)PT (to carry the gear), laziness & not following basic Jump exit instructions!!! Damn!! Good Luck!!
Read video description. Jump exit procedures are not clear-cut and well thought-out. The Army Airborne is to blame and the other services for going along with weak TTP.
Geeeeeeeeeeze! The "music" attached to this video is truly degrading! What in the hell ever happened to moral standards? The only way I could watch the whole video was to shut the sound off. Brave men like those paratroopers deserve a more respectful sound track!
I was the radio man, mass tactical, with ruck sack and rifle and NO DROP cords due to lack of gov't funds, and you wonder why people get hurt when they land, you just waddle out the door and land rolling right ONLY -- Ft. Bragg soldier assigned to 18th Airborne Corps, TAC CP, door position in jump school, and night jump at 800 feet combat equipment with C130's and C141's. Army Airborne!!! On Wisconsin...
in the middle of this video you see a buch of guys wearing black helmet covers with white numbers on them .... that was us doing test jump for the c-17 ... before they figured out that you needed a longer static line and improved prop blast door....
How many of those guys thought, "I just jumped out of a perfectly good airplane"

Pure lack of ground training and selection procedure.
Some of your men are hesitant.
Some of your men have not been adequately inspected by their NCO's.
Poor supervision and leadership from above. I blame your bosses, not the gallant young men who train for war.

All the way, sir!

ps.dnmicpara,
I very am surprised that the Yanks have'nt sorted this, they are usually flexible.Having a "choice" which leg to jump with is so wrong.I did my basic Brit course in '66 the rule was
starboard stick right foot forward, port stick left foot forward. On " Action Stations" you move towards the door as a stick with (starboard stick)all leding with the right foot all the way. Your trailing foot never advances in front of your lead foot.
Thnaks for posting.
Airborne!

What happens to the person that exits weak, as they spin around in circles in the air while their parachutes opens? Do they land correctly or what happens? This video is missing what occurs after they exit wrong. The video is good to watch.
rarebanana 3 years ago 2
they exit weak and they have to correct their chutes before they hit the ground. usualy by grabbing the risers with thumbs pointed down and kicking like crazy till your risers untwist.

Great video, bet that guy caught hell for losing his Kevlar Helmet.
Jay9928 3 years ago 2
Why the degnerate music to go along with an otherwise useful and entertaining video?
markjaws1 3 years ago 7
The worst exits I had were always twisted risers. That kicking your legs training and reaching high up to untangle risers works! Thus far only a couple super man exits that I recall. I was always half asleep going out the door.
airborneSGT 3 years ago 3

Jumping yes, 16th Air Assault also has Scimitar light tanks and Spartan APCs...we really need to get our act together beginning with better jump procedures, drogue activated parachutes and M113 Gavin TRACKS....

And Afganistan paras would take Brits lol.

Aston1st 3 years ago
go to web page links in vid description; higher for surprise, secrecy, avoid air defenses etc. this must be an option available

If we didnt have that "Qouta" then we could make the opening more smoother!!!
gambitrr 3 years ago
Drogue chutes so we can jump higher and faster (300+ mph) and not need 2 safeties to pull in static-lines and d-bags so we can not get shot down, achieve surprise and get more combat power on the DZ is more important than keeping American Airborne in comfort zones of narrow-mindedness.
dynmicpara 3 years ago
A CDS bundle with drogue chute is much heavier than a Paratrooper and is old technology; Russian drogue chutes data says they open in same time and altitude loss as static-lines and d-bags with the same reliability. You are not comparing human drogue chutes with human static lines/d-bags. The American Airborne is on its ass and is full of convenient BS excuses (like observing our crappy CDS bundles) to not make tangible progress. The time has come to LEAD.
dynmicpara 3 years ago
First my respect to all paratroops over the world. You are doing a hard job.
But do they really carry the double of their own weight? Cause if they i cant image than someone can stand with that weight in a 200-300 mph fast airstream without falling away. Another...it have to hurt like hell when the helmet of the trooper is cutting away from the parachuteline. unbelievable
punisher17011990 3 years ago
yeah, they jump carrying around 300 pounds
birdflu3 3 years ago
Yes, equipment weighs a hell of a lot. YOu're ass is worn out after a jump.
My helmet was ripped loose one time, although I didn't lose it. Chin strap and airborne straps kept it hanging on around my neck. It didn't hurt.

Irwin(NTC). The sight of him trapped inside my canopy was priceless.

lo, holy shit maybe now i'm going 2 think twice before sinning up for the Canadian Paratroopers. :] :[
XnightvisionX 3 years ago
yea this is serious stuff. my bro currnetly in his 3rd week of ABS had 1 of his buddies have his whole left arm tissue ripped off because his static line was wrapped around his arm at deplyment
coolman17701 3 years ago
Maybe if our static lines only had to open a packtray and have a drogue chute pop-out there'd be less danger than our current static-line-open-pack-tray-and-d-bag system? The Russians jump higher and faster and the Brits can jump far lower than us; we need to make drastic improvements to our Airborne.

everyone has a bad jump! ive had my shares. but i also have 175+jumps. 1/160th S.O.A.R. (ABN)

Realize that KNOWLEDGE overcomes FEAR when we practice smartly instead of this deliberate, "Blood-on-the-Risers" snobby crap that keeps people in the dark so some can fail and make us feel like big shots.

i bet this would be scary as shit.

Ok, I know nothing about jumping... What happend to the trooper who, during the aftward shot, went spinning away like a corkscrew ? @ 3:40 What would he have done at that point to recover ?
sizmike 3 years ago
Great Video! This is one of the real video footages of Airborne Paratroopers. Mass Exit at night is even better. Well for me, every jump was a night jump.
rghainc 3 years ago
The only thing that matters to me when the light goes green is that Static line & the 1st step out the door!!! I want to keep my static arm & neck intact. I didn't know why there were so many accidents back in the days, now I know!! Lack of (individual)PT (to carry the gear), laziness & not following basic Jump exit instructions!!! Damn!! Good Luck!!
goyneser1 3 years ago
Read video description. Jump exit procedures are not clear-cut and well thought-out. The Army Airborne is to blame and the other services for going along with weak TTP.
dynmicpara 3 years ago
WTF!!??!! That's what being lazy gets you (1st weak exit)!!
goyneser1 3 years ago
British Paras exit faster and i do believe 2 Squadron RAF Regiment have the fastest exit time from a C130.

prototype80 3 years ago
Geeeeeeeeeeze! The "music" attached to this video is truly degrading! What in the hell ever happened to moral standards? The only way I could watch the whole video was to shut the sound off. Brave men like those paratroopers deserve a more respectful sound track!
shifta65 3 years ago
I agree. We will post a version with better sound ASAP. As we state in the VIDEO DESCRIPTION, TURN THE VOLUME DOWN.

What's the best way to vercome acrophobia? Do the 34 and 250 ft towers help eliminate that?

The best way to overcome fear is through KNOWLEDGE that what you are going to do works.
