All that hate...we seem to have learned nothing in the intervening years. More people should be made aware of the true scope of this tragedy. It was deliberately torpedoed by the Allies, although they know it was children and women refugees on board.

The reason why it was denied for half a century, is because the winners of the war (America and Britain) regard all Germans as "Nazis", which is why they want to you believe the victims "deserved it".

In the case of the Wilhelm Gustloff, in this event she was a refugee ship. She had been used by the Sub officers and other German official reasons for some time. But here she was used to move German Nationals from the new war front. 5,000 children where not SS officers, no matter how we need them to be to justify murdering them. I understand your feelings. But the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff was no war crime. The WG was commissioned as a war ship, was painted in military mimicry and was armed. Her days as a hospital ship were over since 1940. Maybe the Soviet commander would have torpedoed her even if she was marked as a hospital ship, but this is an if. Good post.The Gustloff was one of many that went down with great loss of life, during the January to May 1945 evacuation by sea. Around 2 million people were eventually brought to German soil. Some German accounts of losses estimate:

Gustloff / 4000

General von Steuben / 3000

Goya / 5900

Cap Arkona / 5000

Thielbek / 2000

and numerous other vessels with thousands more aboard. These were considered low-ball estimates in 2001, since not all passengers were documented as having boarded.

They said that about the Cap Arcona as well. Up until 1971, skeletal remains would occaisonally wash up on the shores of the Bay of Lübeck even though what was left of the liner was removed by 1949.
