its an 10minute video. i spent 11/2hrs watching it. LOL x i learnt more about tyres ! WAY! :D xx thank you soo much. now i don't feel like such an idiot in the bike store x
Mounting a set of tires takes four days !!! *&%$#@.Tubulars must ride like magic for them to be worth all of this time and effort.I saw a pro race on Versus showing the sprinters coming around a corner at speed towards the line and all of a sudden one of the riders crashes and takes 5-6 riders down with him.I replayed in slo-mo with my DVR and clearly saw the tubular roll off of the rim.I've never ridden a tubular and probably wouldn't buy tubular wheels because of the mounting, cost & saftey
Holy shit, that's a lot of work. Good thing I've decided to use tufo tubular gluing tape. Plus the tape is a lot easier to use when your on the road and you get a flat. all you have to do is apply the tape, mount the tire, and inflate and your good to go.
Tip : find a brush that is approx 1/2 to 3/4 inch wide. Cut bristles off short to leave only 3/4 inch long. To be perfect do this to 2 brushes, one cut convexed to match the shape off the rim and one cut concave to match the shape of the tub tape.
How can Zipp get is SO WRONG !! Just follow the instructions on the Vittoria Mastic One Professional or full instructions that come with a Vittoria Tubular tyre and you'll have a better job done in days less than Zipp's instructions. Having done MANY tubs I am very confident to say that the guy in the video has done very few, if any. You can tell when he first puts the tub on to stretch and how he applies the mastic !!
I'm not sure why so many layers are recommended. Vittoria, the maker of Mastik 1, recommends 1 thin layer on the rim, dried 24h, one thicker layer on the base tape (since much is absorbed), dried 24h, and then only one thin layer on the rim bed to allow the tire to slide into place. The fresh layer's solvents let the dried layers partially dissolve into each other and bond. I'd think Vittoria would know their glue, but Zipp must know their rims and tires. Anyone know why the difference?
@ericpmoss The reason Zipp does multiple coats is b/c they know the value of a low CRR lace up. Vittoria or any other tubular will certainly hold with 1 and 1 and it's much easier to take off should you flat, BUT the rolling resistance of doing so comes at a huge penalty. I used to do 1 and 1 until I learned what a huge difference there is with a tubular that is fully seated to the rim surface. Same 12 mile tt course, identical watts, tubular and 57 second average faster doing this.
@upndown68 Ah, now that's an interesting bit of info -- assuming it's correct, Zipp should add this to their website. I wonder why extra layers would reduce hysteresis loss, though. Maybe it makes more of the casing/base-tape rigid instead of squirmy, but I would have expected a single heavy soaking/drying of the base tape to do that better. In any case, I'll try both ways. BTW, congrats on the TT improvement!
@ericpmoss I wish I understood the science behind it, but I only had to see the proof to be convinced;) Kind of like higher tire pressures were always thought to be 'faster' when in fact they are not. I ran my Conti Comps all the way to the 180psi max for years just b/c I could! Now I run my 23mm's at 110 and weigh 180 lbs. Email zipp and they can shoot you the tech docs on 'crr' and tire pressures.
Good video, can you clarify that this is for a NEW rim and NEW tire? IE, do you need to do 3 layers on a rim that has already had a tire mounted to it before?

There's a vastly better, more secure and faster method, used for decades back in Europe. But why bother when you can do a number of things wrong - as shown - and take extra time.................
If you're messy like me, cover the brake track with a strip of black electric tape.

When mounting a tire to a New Zipp rim, is it advisable to clean the rim with a cleaner such as acetone or benzine?

Three words: Tufo Extreme Tape.......works like a charm. Good video though.

This isn't a video on how to fix a flat, it's a video on how to mount a tubular tire.
