  • great info...thanx Opie

  • I like to see videos that give ideas on how to "Think outside the box". However, when it comes to carrying equipment, I also like to keep to the motto: "Ounces equal pounds, and pounds equal pain". I am curious if the handle on your canteen cup still folds completely when in the closed position?

One the handle is a small horizontal slot. I have found that my knife fits in that spot nicely, and appears to be designed for that purpose. Works great without the extra weight.

  • UM CANTEEN UM TRICK UM AT UM 2:25 UM

  • I wouldn't mind seeing some videos on prepping and cooking wildlife. Have any good recipes I would love to get some. I understand just cooking the crap out of the animal until its a charcoal brick is better than getting food poisoning but seriously after a few months in the wild you tend to want to make things taste better. I use to have recipes for the MRE, I use to make some cool stuff with what they provided you with.

  • what is your channle name?

  • i have used a simular thing as a long reach device to get bird eggs from the river or stream edge

  • i have used a simular thing as a long reach device to get bird eggs from the river or stream edge

  • Where in Ohio are you guys located? I live outside of Athens and research and practice many Survival/Bushcraft skills. Your videos are very informative and I'd just like to thank you for posting such great videos. - Jonah

  • did you make the camera too

  • You do some really good work Critter..

  • can you show a survival kit for boy scouts were not alowed to carry certian go chek bsa regulations

  • perhaps preserving meat that you trapped, snared, shot

  • Like the vid and the canteen cup idea.

  • Great video. I like how sometimes the most simple things are the handiest. One of my fav bushcrafters on youtube is in switzerland and his youtube is hobbexp. so if you youtube search this: Bushcraft International (kettle stand)

I think this is superior to your modified army cup. but thanks anyway for posting.

  • Very cool idea, but the rings rattling around in my pack would drive me crazy.

  • Hey Steve, Tony up here in Nova Scotia, I got myself one of those firesteels and had a hard time making a fire with pretty much anything, last time I practiced with one, I had to strike it about 70 times before I got a fire going, could you do something along the lines of what sort of tinder is the best? I tried making the cotton balls soaked in vaseline but I think I overdid it with the vaseline, they were hard to light for a first fire mix. Best regards Tony

  • good work critter . . sorry for offending you by saying i miss dave. that was not my goal. . keep up the good work

  • good vid but uh, you shouldnt put your cup straight into the fire, you put it on a bed of coals. no reason to get your cup all dirty and all for no reason.. ill do a vid on it one of these days. but good vid 5/5

  • man sometimes the simple mods are the best ! Good job!

  • Hey steve, do you have a channel of your own. I would really like to check all of your vids out before I leave my friends house to go back into the woods.(I stay in the woods 90% of the time)

  • are army canteens made of aluminum? I can't stand the metal taste that came in contact with water. I have many, many old glass thermos of all sizes, including for soups, and also glass replacement fillers---what I'm wondering what are those three spots at bottom of the glass? Lead? I'm thinking of making cushions around thermos to make them shatter-proof as well as straps to carry them.....

  • They used to, Know they are made of rigid plastic, The cups are made of Stainless Steel, and the stoves out of aluminum

  • Nice to meet you Steve. Sounds like you have some exellent ideas already.

  • I would like to see you discuss vapor barriers for cold weather survival. Where may I send you a full page letter?

  • Is this the same Steve that inspired most of us to create a "critter/gitter" pocket? If so, thanks man! And I am looking forward to your videos, as well. But take your time brother, we know you have a full time job, yet you help us out in your spare time.

Thanks again Steve! And give the "boss"my best next time you're talking to him..

  • Good to meet ya Steve. Looking forward to your videos.

  • So where are the vidoes

  • Relax dude he's working on it, he has a full time job and is borrowing a camera right now as well, he is getting ready to post tomarrow.

  • Getting a little testy already aren't we here, huh Steve? Better get used to it, this is Youtube videos and inquiring minds want to know. Otherwise, if you cannot handle simple, honest questions, such as, 'So where are the videos?" for instance, then activate the "disable comments" link. Just relax, Steve, thats not a very good/professional way to answer questions to the viewers/subscribers. I don't think Dave would approve of your lack of patience/professionalism and inexperience showing here.

  • great vid steve, can't wait to see what u can teach us. been looking for a good set of vids on what u can do after u get meat from the animal. using the skin maybe harvest the sinew, what u can make fron the skin.i hope dave is well and u have fun filling in for him. hope we can all learn together.

  • It's good to meet you Steve.

You have big shoes to fill, but you seem like a nice guy so maybe that won't be a problem. I look forward to seeing more from you.

  • The best ideas are the simple ones! Thanks for posting it!

  • looking forward to it Critter.

  • Steve, I am glad that you will take care of the channel. I just started phase one and I am looking forward to learn from you.

  • You've got big shoes to fill.

  • yeah, good idea.

  • Hey I have a suggetion.

Maybe you should try making a clay container or pot. I havent seen any of these on youtube.

  • Hey Steve, great video. Looking forward to watching and learning from your videos. Sounds like you have a lot of great video ideals coming our way. I would like to see some on the "common man" theme. Thanks and take care.

  • great video steve.

  • snow shoes and eveything snow equipment

  • hey i think you did great, it not easy to talk to a camera but you will get ,keep going

  • The videos you have planned, trapping, skinning, winter shelter, etc. sound great! If you say, "uh" though that much, I don't know if I could handle it... Don't worry, you'll do fine.

  • make a survival atlattle in a hypathetical survival situation with a knife some paracord and feathers

  • snow shelters sound great!

I can tell your videos are going to be awesome.

    looking forward to it.

  • traps, trap sets, trap prep.,skinning, tanning. This sounds great. I can't wait.

  • i would like to see the self made traps real catch somthing.a real live animal for survival.i can make traps, but never cougt any thing

  • Can you show us how to hunt a bear with your bare hands? jk..... Looking foward to seeing more of your shows.

  • Are you going to go over the Objiwa Bird Trap or the Basket Fish Trap? The Objiwa Bird Trap is one that I would love to see constructed. If you are ex army then you can find it in your FM 21-76.

  • a bird perch type snare would be a good one to see demonstrated in real life

  • you look nervous. You might want to try using river line traps for racoons

  • Thanks for all your support and suggestions. We will be showing success in trapping as it will be legal during the season. Video evidence + not legal= big trouble, hope you guys understand that. Tanning and meat preservation not a problem.

  • Loved the vid! Looking foward to more from u. I'd like to see build that bench. Thanks

  • Trapping videos would be great. I'd like to see the success, not just the setting of them.

  • snowshoes please!

  • Awesome brother, look forward to many more, and its nice to meet ya!!!

  • lol, he seamed nervous. Dunno why.

One thing I'd like to see is primitive bone tools.

  • Brain tanning X2 !!!! - We look forward to seeing more of you.

  • would you show how to brain tan? thanks mik

  • lol "as you can see i made this little stool"

  • ya, please post the hide tanning on you tube, it would be really usefull, and well as the traping, also, you could make a video on how to hunt rabbit on squrriels with bows, and rifle for those of us who hunt, but can't seam to shoot any where near our limit, thanks,

  • nice video man, hope to see you soon with more videos!

  • where is he going???

  • awesome idea about the tanning of a hide. I got a buck last year and sent it out to be done but would've loved to do it myself but did not know how. Lookin forward to this winter Mr. Critter Gitter Davis.

  • I really like the trapping and hide tanning because I have always wanted to make a coon skin hat or skunk!!!

  • Nice vid Steve, looking forward to seeing more of you over the next couple of years. I too am interested in videos about making some semi-permanent comforts like stools/chairs/etc..

  • Nice vid! I like the chair, and the modification seems pretty handy to me!

  • Cover meat drying and smoking.

  • you seem nervous steve! lol dont be we are nice people really lol.

cant wait to see more good luck

  • you can make the same mod with 2 carabiners.. nice vid

  • Good stuff, sounds like we're in for a great time! For suggestions, I was really impressed with your stool in particular. I like how it appears very solid, yet not overcomplicated. Could you share some tips on camp comforts, and things we can do to make the outdoors more home-like? Places to relax (sit/sleep), cooking arrangements, hygiene stations, etc. What would your ideal primitive camp look like? Thanks for sharing, I'm excited looking forward to the experience!

  • I really look forward to your trapping videos. That's always something I'd thought about getting into.

A suggestion I have is a video showing the different kinds of traps, how they're used, preparation, ect.

Again, I look forward to seeing more.

  • cheers Steve..cool dual cam editing,,the mod on the canteen is like my swedish trangia cookset and allows you to fetch/place the pot more safely,,but good call as that will prevent someone getting burnt...looking forward to the skinning/tanning.. sounds great!!

  • nice into Steve

    I liked the chair

  • err meant to type intro lol

  • Good stuff Steve looking foward to your videos.

  • Good tip

i cant think of any suggestions right now but i will come up with something

what you have planned sounds amazing

  • Great job Steve, my grandson loves the pvc fishing kit you built for him. Have yet to catch anything, but he walks around showing it to anyone who will listen.

We are looking forward to your upcoming vid's.

  • nice tip thx for sharing, looking forward to all tou have to teach, cant wait to learn from you cheers bro

  • looking forward to seeing more, can't wait!

  • try not too be so nervous u have joined the bc party

defiantly want more mods stock is great but mods are best thats why its all modded

and a proper intro w/ channel link if u have a YT 5*

  • how about water storage ! water seems to freeze and I have only 2 possible answers. 1. filling store bought water all the way up so I can throw the whole thing in the fire. and 2. taking my water bottles and submerge them in the river . if I put them where I sleep ,backpack , ect. they still freeze . and I have to make due with melting snow for water .

  • If you have this issue due to your region try the US Artic canteen and cup, they are designed not to freeze.

  • I'm right next door ( indianapolis ) , I'm unemploed , I get what I can afford or find.

  • Keep you're water bottle indife your sleeping bag with you or if you don't use a sleeping bag, put the bottle between you and your fire. Keep the fire burning all night and it'll stay plenty warm. :)

  • inside*

  • Place coals in a pit, place a little dirt on top of that. Put your canteen on top of the dirt and add more dirt, then coals. Similar to dutch oven cooking. Just make sure to not use plastic.

    Adai

  • @rbvmtr If a thermos is used it will take longer for water to freeze.

  • It would be nice to see instruction for a few highly effective traps to catch deer and such.

  • you should wake a sleeping bear this winter and wrestle it to the ground and put it into submission.

  • You only say "um" a lot because you aren't jacked up on Monster like Dave. Drink a couple of those before shooting and you will feel the spirit of the Pathfinder!

  • Thanks PAL!

  • Is that true!!!? :O LOLOLOL

  • good idea, thanks

  • Hey Critter I have a request. Dave a while back showed how to skin a rabbit, but it's been awhile, and how to gut it. YOu think if you get something, you could go through a detailed process of gutting and skinning an animal caracass for a preparing the meat to be eatin. I mean I'm a city fella, and if I remember correctly Dave's camera back then wasn't so good. So maybe now, with better equipment you guys could do something like that for us city boys. Thanks man.

  • Yeah, a short series on getting from just killed to pot would be interesting. Be good if if you could keep it very simple for absolute beginners.

  • I'd love to see some tanning videos.

  • Good to see Critter D back.

Any more refinements to the sling fisher system? That was a great vid.

    Suggestions:

Improvised snow goggles would be a good idea for a winter survival how-to.

Keeping food safe from animals/BEARS is always good info.

    Cold weather Stoves.

    Ice fishing techniques.

    Spear making.

  • Good job Steve. Dave does make it look easy, doesn't he?

  • gonna be great thanks.

  • Thanks for -the Video

any thing on the common man"s-------------

    theme would be great.

  • unarmed combat on a bear would be useful please

  • WOW! I do say "um' alot.lol I'm still a little nervous in front of the camera. Dave is going to be a hard act to follow, but I think we'll do fine. Thanks for the suggestions and support. I'll write down this stuff and try to work on them the best I can.

  • Don't worry about it brother.

  • You're doing fine man!!! Lookin forward to the next one -Keep it up! :)

  • First I would absolutely LOVE to see a video on making/modifying personal snow camouflage...and also maybe how to "carry fire" or glowing embers in a clay-lined shell/container for easy fire transport and easy start of a new fire from one previously started...the Native Americans used to do this and I never found out how...thank you

  • how to preserve meat would be great

  • welcome some more vids on cleaning and tanning would be the best as after your clothes rot in a survival situation or you dont have spares ,there are no fig leaves available to keep you warm .

  • how about smokin meat..

  • Getter Critter!

  • Ya whooooo. More hunting fishing and trapping videos.

  • some more campcraft ideas would be great since we love bush campcraft here in sweden. looking forward to watching your vid´s

  • great mod you must love the swedish army canteen cup.

  • look forward to the new vids I glad he's got a replacement stepping in for the meantime

  • I like this guy...He seems like a no B.S. kinda guy.

  • the snow shows/snow shelter would be pretty cool. i would like to see some hunting/trapping/dressing, and edibles

  • cant wait to see the hide vids from start to finish and if Dave trust you i dont think anyone here is going to object to what you have to offer.

  • that handle is a copy from the swedish army Trangia cookset

  • I would like to see you teach a little on Wild edibles, from plants to insects.

  • Steve, I have used a variation of the penny snare with a large washer with holes drilled in it as a lock for drowning beaver trapped in a #4 coil spring. How about a video on brain tanning using the animal's fat as the liqueur in the tanning process, and a video on building a platform above the snow between trees with a lean to on top for winter camping. If I had a video camera instead of an alimony payment I would send you some suggestions. Welcome aboard, and great job! 5/5

  • I would like to see videos on trapping, skinning, dressing, etc.

  • Nice men.. A recomendation: Relax and enjoy

  • I second the ice fishing. I'd like to see results with minimal kit/gear and picking a spot.

  • i like the shelter videos

  • Howdy Steve!

Welcome, Just be Steve and not Dave, and you will do fine. We are all looking forward to Your vision of the Pathfinder concepts!!!

  • i'll be following you in dave's absence critter. i know dave would prefer that we all not abandon this youtube once he's gone. looking forward to learning with you!

  • I would like to learn about tanning hides with and with out fur

  • say you are out hunting and you bring down a deer, but are far from your camp. how would you bring it back to camp?

  • atv ?

  • HI Steve. You get much colder winters than we do in the UK. Any tips you have for winter camping and keeping warm would be greatly appreciated. Hoping to get over to the Pahthfinder meet next year. Thanks Sean

  • I'd like to see a primitive blow dart setup.

  • Cool project, I will look t up.

  • what kinda knife u rock critter?

  • Great Job Steve, I look forward to learning a few things from you friend. It would e nice to see a few trapping techniques such as different traps for squirrel and rabbits. Besides the normal kind that we all see here on UT.

  • Good video there Critter. Will look forward to future videos. Since you're up north, maybe show show ice fishing this winter. Making some snowshoes would be good too.

  • For those un aware-Steve is the Lead Intructor at the Pathfinder School-His knowledge of wilderness self reliance will speak for itself as he posts videos on this channel.

  • I'd love to see some hunting/trapping videos.

It's deer season in Indiana, I don't know about Ohio, but post your deer hunts.

Archery videos would be cool too. Everyone knows knows how to use a shotgun but not a lot of people can use a bow it seems like.

With bow you can hunt longer in the season.

  • Welcome

  • great job critter!!!..ok for ideas...how to read weather...snow storm survival ideas...basic sewing kits...machette mods...how to make a haversack like daves...bow fishing tech...how to dry food for the trail..how to preserve food on the trail...a vid on the dakota hole and its uses as a stove/oven...how to avoid getting lost and how to get found...horse hoof fungus as a fire carrier for the next fire( slow match) ..compare the feroseum rods big vs small..live catch traps..fish traps...

  • cool I look forward to the video's this coming season. I would like to see some video's about cooking what you catch and what kind of meals u can make out of the meat and wild edibles.

  • Hey critter i would love to see how you made that stove!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for the video I would like to see how to make snow shoes and things out of leather as well as trapping. Can't wait -Joshua

  • thanks steve. i would suggest something i learned from the inuits. how to smoke and fire cure hide to make boots. then make the boots. face it if a rock or something destroyed your footwear you better be able to replace it with something that is warm and lasts. the trick is to cure the soles of the boot properly to get the proper hardness.

  • I'd like to see this, also.

    Adai

  • cool trick. Don't get me wrong but some of these videos take forever to get to the point.

  • Being in South Dakota I look foward to a snow shelter i need that !!!

  • Everything you mention sounds awesome! I can't wait to see the vids!

  • It's a Pathfinder School hat trick tonight.

Look forward to seeing more of Critter.

  • Steve sounds like you have a lot of good ideas already. The trapping are you going to show modern traps as well as primitive traps? I did trapping when I lived in Pennsylvania and was amazed at some of the other trappers attempts at sets. I have seen a few here in Ohio and wonder how they catch anything.

  • Sounds good - looking forward to this winter!

  • good video man can't wait

  • Hunting and trapping sounds great! Should be cool.
