I like to see videos that give ideas on how to "Think outside the box". However, when it comes to carrying equipment, I also like to keep to the motto: "Ounces equal pounds, and pounds equal pain". I am curious if the handle on your canteen cup still folds completely when in the closed position?
One the handle is a small horizontal slot. I have found that my knife fits in that spot nicely, and appears to be designed for that purpose. Works great without the extra weight.
I wouldn't mind seeing some videos on prepping and cooking wildlife. Have any good recipes I would love to get some. I understand just cooking the crap out of the animal until its a charcoal brick is better than getting food poisoning but seriously after a few months in the wild you tend to want to make things taste better. I use to have recipes for the MRE, I use to make some cool stuff with what they provided you with.
Where in Ohio are you guys located? I live outside of Athens and research and practice many Survival/Bushcraft skills. Your videos are very informative and I'd just like to thank you for posting such great videos. - Jonah
Great video. I like how sometimes the most simple things are the handiest. One of my fav bushcrafters on youtube is in switzerland and his youtube is hobbexp. so if you youtube search this: Bushcraft International (kettle stand)
I think this is superior to your modified army cup. but thanks anyway for posting.
Hey Steve, Tony up here in Nova Scotia, I got myself one of those firesteels and had a hard time making a fire with pretty much anything, last time I practiced with one, I had to strike it about 70 times before I got a fire going, could you do something along the lines of what sort of tinder is the best? I tried making the cotton balls soaked in vaseline but I think I overdid it with the vaseline, they were hard to light for a first fire mix. Best regards Tony
good vid but uh, you shouldnt put your cup straight into the fire, you put it on a bed of coals. no reason to get your cup all dirty and all for no reason.. ill do a vid on it one of these days. but good vid 5/5
Hey steve, do you have a channel of your own. I would really like to check all of your vids out before I leave my friends house to go back into the woods.(I stay in the woods 90% of the time)
are army canteens made of aluminum? I can't stand the metal taste that came in contact with water. I have many, many old glass thermos of all sizes, including for soups, and also glass replacement fillers---what I'm wondering what are those three spots at bottom of the glass? Lead? I'm thinking of making cushions around thermos to make them shatter-proof as well as straps to carry them.....
Is this the same Steve that inspired most of us to create a "critter/gitter" pocket? If so, thanks man! And I am looking forward to your videos, as well. But take your time brother, we know you have a full time job, yet you help us out in your spare time.
Thanks again Steve! And give the "boss"my best next time you're talking to him..

Otherwise, if you cannot handle simple, honest questions, such as, 'So where are the videos?" for instance, then activate the "disable comments" link. Just relax, Steve, thats not a very good/professional way to answer questions to the viewers/subscribers. I don't think Dave would approve of your lack of patience/professionalism and inexperience showing here.
great vid steve, can't wait to see what u can teach us. been looking for a good set of vids on what u can do after u get meat from the animal. using the skin maybe harvest the sinew, what u can make fron the skin.i hope dave is well and u have fun filling in for him. hope we can all learn together.
Hey Steve, great video. Looking forward to watching and learning from your videos. Sounds like you have a lot of great video ideals coming our way. I would like to see some on the "common man" theme. Thanks and take care.
The videos you have planned, trapping, skinning, winter shelter, etc. sound great! If you say, "uh" though that much, I don't know if I could handle it... Don't worry, you'll do fine.
Are you going to go over the Objiwa Bird Trap or the Basket Fish Trap? The Objiwa Bird Trap is one that I would love to see constructed. If you are ex army then you can find it in your FM 21-76.
Thanks for all your support and suggestions. We will be showing success in trapping as it will be legal during the season. Video evidence + not legal= big trouble, hope you guys understand that. Tanning and meat preservation not a problem.
ya, please post the hide tanning on you tube, it would be really usefull, and well as the traping, also, you could make a video on how to hunt rabbit on squrriels with bows, and rifle for those of us who hunt, but can't seam to shoot any where near our limit, thanks,
awesome idea about the tanning of a hide. I got a buck last year and sent it out to be done but would've loved to do it myself but did not know how. Lookin forward to this winter Mr. Critter Gitter Davis.
Nice vid Steve, looking forward to seeing more of you over the next couple of years. I too am interested in videos about making some semi-permanent comforts like stools/chairs/etc..

Great job Steve, my grandson loves the pvc fishing kit you built for him. Have yet to catch anything, but he walks around showing it to anyone who will listen.
how about water storage ! water seems to freeze and I have only 2 possible answers. 1. filling store bought water all the way up so I can throw the whole thing in the fire. and 2. taking my water bottles and submerge them in the river . if I put them where I sleep ,backpack , ect. they still freeze . and I have to make due with melting snow for water .
Keep you're water bottle indife your sleeping bag with you or if you don't use a sleeping bag, put the bottle between you and your fire. Keep the fire burning all night and it'll stay plenty warm. :)
Place coals in a pit, place a little dirt on top of that. Put your canteen on top of the dirt and add more dirt, then coals. Similar to dutch oven cooking. Just make sure to not use plastic.
You only say "um" a lot because you aren't jacked up on Monster like Dave. Drink a couple of those before shooting and you will feel the spirit of the Pathfinder!
Hey Critter I have a request. Dave a while back showed how to skin a rabbit, but it's been awhile, and how to gut it. YOu think if you get something, you could go through a detailed process of gutting and skinning an animal caracass for a preparing the meat to be eatin. I mean I'm a city fella, and if I remember correctly Dave's camera back then wasn't so good. So maybe now, with better equipment you guys could do something like that for us city boys. Thanks man.
WOW! I do say "um' alot.lol I'm still a little nervous in front of the camera. Dave is going to be a hard act to follow, but I think we'll do fine. Thanks for the suggestions and support. I'll write down this stuff and try to work on them the best I can.
First I would absolutely LOVE to see a video on making/modifying personal snow camouflage...and also maybe how to "carry fire" or glowing embers in a clay-lined shell/container for easy fire transport and easy start of a new fire from one previously started...the Native Americans used to do this and I never found out how...thank you
welcome some more vids on cleaning and tanning would be the best as after your clothes rot in a survival situation or you dont have spares ,there are no fig leaves available to keep you warm .
Steve, I have used a variation of the penny snare with a large washer with holes drilled in it as a lock for drowning beaver trapped in a #4 coil spring. How about a video on brain tanning using the animal's fat as the liqueur in the tanning process, and a video on building a platform above the snow between trees with a lean to on top for winter camping. If I had a video camera instead of an alimony payment I would send you some suggestions. Welcome aboard, and great job! 5/5
i'll be following you in dave's absence critter. i know dave would prefer that we all not abandon this youtube once he's gone. looking forward to learning with you!
HI Steve. You get much colder winters than we do in the UK. Any tips you have for winter camping and keeping warm would be greatly appreciated. Hoping to get over to the Pahthfinder meet next year. Thanks Sean
Great Job Steve, I look forward to learning a few things from you friend. It would e nice to see a few trapping techniques such as different traps for squirrel and rabbits. Besides the normal kind that we all see here on UT.
Good video there Critter. Will look forward to future videos. Since you're up north, maybe show show ice fishing this winter. Making some snowshoes would be good too.
For those un aware-Steve is the Lead Intructor at the Pathfinder School-His knowledge of wilderness self reliance will speak for itself as he posts videos on this channel.
great job critter!!!..ok for ideas...how to read weather...snow storm survival ideas...basic sewing kits...machette mods...how to make a haversack like daves...bow fishing tech...how to dry food for the trail..how to preserve food on the trail...a vid on the dakota hole and its uses as a stove/oven...how to avoid getting lost and how to get found...horse hoof fungus as a fire carrier for the next fire( slow match) ..compare the feroseum rods big vs small..live catch traps..fish traps...
cool I look forward to the video's this coming season. I would like to see some video's about cooking what you catch and what kind of meals u can make out of the meat and wild edibles.
thanks steve. i would suggest something i learned from the inuits. how to smoke and fire cure hide to make boots. then make the boots. face it if a rock or something destroyed your footwear you better be able to replace it with something that is warm and lasts. the trick is to cure the soles of the boot properly to get the proper hardness.
welcome critter look forward to your videos and the knowledge you pass on thanks for your time and effort and will try and come up with some good suggestions for ya
Steve sounds like you have a lot of good ideas already. The trapping are you going to show modern traps as well as primitive traps? I did trapping when I lived in Pennsylvania and was amazed at some of the other trappers attempts at sets. I have seen a few here in Ohio and wonder how they catch anything.
great info...thanx Opie

I'd love to see some hunting/trapping videos.
It's deer season in Indiana, I don't know about Ohio, but post your deer hunts.
Archery videos would be cool too. Everyone knows knows how to use a shotgun but not a lot of people can use a bow it seems like.
With bow you can hunt longer in the season.

thanks steve. i would suggest something i learned from the inuits. how to smoke and fire cure hide to make boots. then make the boots. face it if a rock or something destroyed your footwear you better be able to replace it with something that is warm and lasts. the trick is to cure the soles of the boot properly to get the proper hardness.
