please look it up in wikipedia...the american military failed miserably in the ATTEMPT, with 8 american soldiers dying...AFTER which, after the Algiers Accord was signed, the hostages were released.

I'm not saying I believe in everything the media says, but I'm currently a professional (sports) journalist and I used to be a university research assistant so I know that the time it takes someone to look up information on wikipedia is the same time it would take to get much more reliable information from google news or yahoo news or AP or Reuters online etc.

Wikipedia is good if you're looking up episodes of Lost, CSI, or Gundam but not so much for serious political issues or biographies.

You do not have the complete information. The operation was organized 14 months ago. The "R" day, as it was called, was chosen BEFORE McCain went to Columbia. George Bush went 2 times in the last year to Colombia, there were 213 operations from the Pentagon trying to find the americans and everything was unsuccessful. McCain was informed of the possibility of the operation when he was coming back from Colombia. Dont you see that he didn't meet with the hostages!!
