  • worksong is its real title .check it out bert does it best ;old hippies lol!

  • @49mrjd No it ain't - and no he doesn't... :-)

  • Davy Graham wrote it, and his version on 'The Guitar Player' is best, no contest (although these other versions are well done)...Graham played chords, melody and bass at the same time in an amazing fashion, reminiscent of classical style, but on steel string...He was the precursor to Jansch, Renbourne, that whole school.

  • @frankdialogue "The Guitar Player" came out as a vinyl album separately from the original EP which contained "Angi". The EP - recorded with Alexis Korner - was called "3/4 AD" (A for Alexis, D for Davy). The subsequent CD release of "The Guitar Player" had the EP original of "Angi" tacked on to it along with some other stuff. All good stuff though. :-)

  • I love this song.

  • Hi i think you got this nailed well and truly well done this is my idea of how DG did it orginally as well ......

  • I knew Davy G. and when he did an interview for Guitar International we got him to write out the top line of his composition Anji. He is the composer, his playing of the tune is definitive. Other recordings and performances are variations. If you play Beethoven or Lennon you play the melody..then improvise on the harmonic sequence..if you chose. Davy saw it as a Thelonius Monk piano figure with an upright bass. To be played cool !!

  • Nice one thanks a million - I'm inspired to post myself having fun with the same great number - I dedicated it Davy Graham then and now! Best wishes, Dave (Small Days)

  • brilliant cover

  • @candorist Not at all (I also play jazz of all eras) - but I think that the original version of this tune, as written and played by Davy Graham, has a symmetry, a cool quality, that makes it superior to versions by - say - Bert Jansch and thereafter Paul Simon. It's one of those rare tunes that - IMO - it's hard to improve on. In the end, of course - it's all personal taste...

  • Very nice and also a relaxing piece. Thanks HenfieldWill

  • NicE!!!

  • @mynamewayne1 No - he did write it, and it's not a traditional folk song.

  • First encountered you on Acoustic Magazine's site. Just wonderful.

  • Great to see Davy's version up here. A man not to be forgotten and thanks to videos like this, he'll live on. Thanks.

  • excellent

  • absolutely superb buddy..... this version's the best... thanks for the innstructional video also...nearly got it mastered!

  • @JoeyMonk Glad to be of service... :-)

  • I recall this tune from 1960's. Will's quite correct. It's being played at the correct speed.

  • nice. but u r playing too fast dude... sounds like u wanna go somewhere...

  • @gyrtaz Sorry gyrtaz, but you're on the wrong track. The speed I'm playing at is exactly the speed that Davy plays it on the original recording. Check it out if you don't believe me. I also remember DG playing it at that speed when I knew him in the 60s. If it was good enough for him - who wrote it - it's good enough for me. :-)

  • great m8ty, how long did it take you to learn this?

  • It was so long ago I can't remember! :-)

  • Very nice playing! I'm almost convinced that Nancy Wilson of Heart plays this song and calls it Silver Wheels. Wow isn't that plageurism? I don't think many Heart fans realize it. Nancy admitted in an interview that she learned Davy Grahams song Angie but what she failed to say was that she plays it as an intro to Heart's hit song Crazy On You and Nancy titled the piece Silver Wheels.

  • Is that a classical guitar?

  • No - it's a Tanglewood electro-acoustic - steel strung.

  • Fantastic!

  • did you hear a story about cocain lill

she had a cocain house on cocain hill

  • DG recorded it around '61, as I recall (tho' it's a long time ago now!). It came out on an Extended Play (45rpm EP) vinyl called "3/4 AD". One side was an extended blues with Alexis Korner - the other side was DG playing "Angi" and "Davy's Train Blues". "Angi" has also been included on the CD version of DG's first ever album "The Guitar Player". :-)

  • Thank you forever for the tabs to this song. This is the first song I've learnt to play and its been a wonderful experience to keep improving on my attemtps for many months.

And it sounds better and more enjoyable everytime. Beautiful song.

  • A great rendition of a true masterpiece. Hats off to you sir. I wish I had half your skill.

  • Glad you liked it. Looking at it after 3+ years, the video quality is really crappy compared to what YouTube can accept these days. Still - there you go... :-)

  • Verry wel done, learned a lot of it.

  • really nice

  • Just saw your Anji rendition. I've been working on that song for quite some time, and watching many guitarists who play it well. I like your performance best. you make it look effortless and your tone is very consistant. Thanks for the inspiration.

  • Glad you liked it. Many thanks :-)

  • Absolutely Brilliant thank you! I will probably be watching the 'How to play' Video for some time to come!

I was introduced to this song by a friend and his dad, though been playing my own twisted version for years as they left me to my own devices. Now hopefully I'll be on the right track soon enough!

    ^_^

  • Thanks for this

Silky smooth, this is the way I want to play. I suppose I'll just keep working on it.

Question, does a crappy guitar hold you back much?

  • Me? Play a crappy guitar? :-) Seriously - yes. Really experienced musicians can get a reasonable tune out of really poor instruments - but beginners, or relative beginners, can't (in my experience). Always try and get the best quality instrument you can afford, and make sure it's set up to suit you. If, later on, you tire of it, you'll get a reasonable return on your outlay when you sell it. Just me 10c-worth...

  • i enjoyed that the old git that tought me plays bert janschs version tho.

  • What amp? The signal on this recording was going direct into my Mac Book Pro. Also, the bass run is a major part of this tune. :-)

  • simply beautiful

  • great cover. my dad has actually bought the dvd and found it most useful. what type of guitar is that by the way? it is similar to my tanglewood

  • It's a Tanglewood Sundance (TV-45_ - one of the early models. I don't have it now (traded it for a Larrivée), but you can find it for sale at GJS Guitar Emporium in Storrington, Sussex. It's a great guitar and did me some good service. :-) Will

  • Love this version and great guitar tone also! I just posted my first utobe video playing this song and am finding out how many "anji" players there are out there! This is a really beautiful rendition.

  • You are my hero. Please teach me master. I will do everything you say to become a pro like you!

  • Take a peek at my "How to play Davy Graham's 'Angi'" video - it's probably the best I can do! :-)

  • great tone, im trying to learn this now, its a matter of getting the speed and rhythm, i hadnt heard of davy graham until i saw your vid, your a great teacher, its explained so well , i cant understand how they havent taught tutorials the same way before, it would save some people years of frustration.

  • thanx mate , superb!!!!!!!!! stay kooool

  • Wow! You're amazing. I wish i could play the guitar that well, but i'm just a newbie this far.

    Really good vid's! :D

  • If you don't like it Pitsahatt, don't watch it!

I like to see other guys playing, especially this well! Why do so many spend there lives putting others down!

  • @BobJJ9999 it is because they themselves have no good qualities, they are de-bassers, devoted to putting others down for a sense of superiority and satisfaction, Will, you are certainly Fly for a white guy! amazing playing

  • Why does so many keep insisting on uploading videos of themselves playing songs?

  • If you look at the personal info about me on my YT home page, you'll see that, after many years playing, I'm posting demonstration and teaching videos to try and help beginners at the guitar.

  • Well, to holp other players and maybe to inspire them. Wish I had a YouTube service when I started playing 30 years ago! I am fascinated by the vast flow of people wanting to share their musical contributions to the world. Aren't you?

  • Anji was THE song that inspired me to continue learning guitar, I really like your recording.

My old teacher and I worked it out by ear from Paul Simon's recording, which is different in a few respects.

I'm currently learning your Cuckoo's nest, thanks for all your videos :)

  • yeah man great version.. an played at the perfect tempo, excellent, sounds like the real deal.. i'm gonna look at your "how to play" video now

  • That was beautifully done. I started playing the guitar myself just a few weeks ago. I'm gonna try and learn this song once I get better. The how-to vid will help a lot with that, I think.

Sounds really cool, even if it's simplistic. This is the kind of tune I could listen to all afternoon.

  • Beautiful skill,Great natural talent;)

  • nice, heyy it's jerry garcia.

  • ooh that sounds nice

  • will,I just cant wait for you to come out with the tab and guide....it will be so woderful to just learn this piece well, and I will treasure it forever.

  • Nice job, couple of extra licks in there I'll look to work on.

  • very enjoyable - fantastic playing and a beautiful tone.

  • You make it sound so.... smooth!

  • This is the best acoustic song there is and your playing of it is awesome

  • There is nothing like the joy of playing music like "Anji". It is wonderful watching you play it. I know it's a difficult piece. You're an inspiration to all guitarists! More please!

  • Nice played, from your friend Cleo Forlanding.

  • Sweet.

  • Super!

  • I will learn this song, even if it kills me and makes my fingers bleed

  • it would be very nice to get some tip, I have some problems with the rythm... if you have any good tips how to play the song it would be really nice of you to help me with them :)

  • I think you can take two approaches to this song. One is to concentrate initially on getting that bass riff (AAGGFFEE) going nice and steadily - you can see I use my thumb to cover the F note - the other is to break the tune down into little bits and concentrate on each bit. I don't know whether the tab is available on the net - have a look and see if you can find it. If you can't let me know and I'll knock up a tab sheet for you. Cheers, Will.

  • please could you find me a tab. so good. many thanks.

  • I'm currently working on a video guide called "How to play Davy Graham's "Angi" - it will include tab, music and step-by-step guides to each part of the tune.

  • Just watched it. Many thanks to you for tutorial. One of the best out there for sure. You explain like the watcher is new to the guitar and every thing is slow and simple. Very well done. If only all lessons were made in this fashion. You have helped me no end. Thank you again.

  • My pleasure! :-) Will

  • oh, this is so great, im trying to learn it right now. You play it so amazingly great!

  • Thankyou - you're very kind! Good luck with the learning - let me know if I can help...Will

  • Beautifully played, can't believe how easy you make it look, haha.

  • Thanks -the original's actually not that hard as far as notes go, but it does need that swing. Still, I have been doing it for 40 years...!

  • that is exactly what i was thinking, im like he's probably doing this for as long as my dad has been alive lol

  • Classic !
