this engine is not the 6.8l truck engine. not even close. it is a re-done 4.6 dohc stretched 2 cylinders for a total of 5.8 liters. it was a custom one off back-shop hot rod built by ford.
The actual triton v10 in f super dutys is a 413 ci 320 hp and 440 pounds of torque. With the right exhaust it sounds like a freaking Lamborghini or something in that category. The engine is freaking massive, I can't believe they actually attempted to put it in a car. That's just insane.
This prototype V10 shares the same engine block design as the 6.8L Triton V10 with the exception of the 6.8L being an iron block. If someone can make 4v heads for those Triton V10s, that would make it scream like the Mustang in this video. I love the sound of that V10 in this clip! Sucks that Ford went with the supercharged 5.4L for the GT instead of the 7.0L V10 from their 427 Concept (or the 6.4L version in the Cobra and GR1 Concept).

@25Celtics Vipers are dangerous because they don't have traction control or electronic stability control. It has nothing to do with how many cylinders the engine has.
@ownTer Why are you trolling bro? This car has the torque to pull a mobile home, sure torque is good, but not that much. i dont think they really need to make a car like that, thats all im saying. If you want to put it in a mustang, make it a performance engine, not just a dragster. BTW I love vipers and i LOVE fords, and when i called the mustang a catastrophe, it was complement
@bmwandcadillacftw you are right, but a mustang with a v10 isnt though, at least for that generation, can you imagine a 04 v10? it would be a nightmare, now, not such a bad idea... but the 5.0 has got to stay :D
V10s are plenty livable, look at all the Econolines and F350s and Excursions with them. Livable? For certain. It's just the way the car is designed as it was designed to be basic like a race car.. The Viper was meant to be balls to the wall, dangerous, and scary. No traction control, no ABS, and no reverse lockout on the transmission for a little while.
@hjjfffaa super cars are insane, v10s and v12s. if they can make it work then great, yes the viper was insane, a mustang would be too. but a truck for towing would be just right for a v10, like the v10 1500, or the f350 like you said. im just saying stick with the v8. quit trolling! :)
@hjjfffaa No, but horsepower figures do and when you consider that Ford wasn't able to produce a N/A engine producing anywhere near that output until about 10 years later, it's pretty impressive.
@dodge69874 Near what output? You do realize that specific output is stupid and going for some really high number upsets the balance of the machine as a whole, right?
@hjjfffaa Actually they do, they're target for the new 5.0 was to 80 hp/l IIRC, and they achieved 82.4 hp/l. With the new GT500 it'll be putting out 112 hp per liter.
@25Celtics the viper v10 is incredibly heavy. Its an 8.5 liter which weighs a ton. this is an all aluminum 5.8 which wouldnt be much weight distribution difference from a standard mustang gt
Ford released shortly V10 and V12, efficient and not fuel-efficient. They are working on. The Taurus V6 is more powerful than the Audi V8. The Ford Trucks are already very powerful.
Why does the video say its a 325ci and the description says 351? I am confuses. Either way ford probably scrapped this idea in favor of the Boss 6.2 in the trucks right now. i know its a 5.8L V10 351ci and the V10 is only found in F250's and some F350's no F150's have a V10 and i know the 6.8 is based off the 5.4. ford is to cheap to make a whole different motor. what would be kinda cool if they could join 2 DOHC Intech V8's together. that would be badass
they used the exact method you mentioned. The 6.8 V10 is just a 5.4 V8 with a pair of cylinders grafted on, same deal with the heads and cams. 5.8 V10 in this project car is just a 4.6 cobra motor with the same treatment
cobra engine? as far as i know this v10 is a 2 valve head design...cobras are 4v...but a 4.6l cobra block isnt any different then any other 4.6l block from the same year. the difference was forged crank, better rods and pistons to handle the 390hp rating
um no..... you should actually read the story of the car. Komo is saying that there is no computer software at ford that would have made it work at a better potential. 4.6L runs sequential.
point being there was no way the EEC-V could control 10 cylinders at the same time, there was no program for it. so they used two computers and essentially used one computer for each bank. One comp. controlled 5 cylinders and the 2nd comp controlled the other 5
i did alot of research on this motor when i read about this car, and its basically a 4.6l with 2 extra cylinders, and the 6.8l v10 is basically a 5.4 with 2 extra cyinders. i wish ford would put this bad boy in hte mustang GT's it'd be a cheap motor to make easy HP.

Yes, you obviously care that you will win but no one else gives a damn about you. Cars are about fun. You NEED something else in order to feel better about yourself. Mustangs can be fubn cars win or lose.
ok once and for all, this was originally a 4.6 DOHC 32V engine with an extra pair of cyldinders grafted on and stretched heads. IT IS NOT RELATED TO THE TRITON ENGINE FAMILY IN THE F-SERIES. It originally displaced 281 ci. but now displaces 351ci. or 5.8L. MM&FF dubbed this car the BOSS 351. call me out if im wrong but check the website and search "BOSS 351" first.
You're right. Motor Trend did an article on it as well. They said a lot about the engine and also mentioned that it was in no way related to the 6.8L Triton V-10.
the crazy shit is that this engine isnt even working hard...if Ford Racing can pull every trick in the book and get 550hp out of the out race prep 5L cammer imagine this beast with race ported heads, aggressive cams, full cat-less exhaust on C16 and a race tune?? memo to Ford: build this engine now!! ha ha

seriously, the idiot who posted this doesn't know anything about this car.
first of all, its not a 351. its a 390c.i. 6.4L V10.
secondly, this wasn't called a Boss. nor is the engine apart of the Boss development program. all this was was just a mule for the components used in the Cobra Concept.
If you think this is the 6.4L used in the Cobra and GR-1 concepts, than your the one who knows nothing about this car. This engine was made using 2 DOHC 4.6L v8s used in the Mustang Cobras from 1996-2004. Two cylinders from one engine were essentially welded on to the other. And because this engine displaced 5.8 liters, they called it the Boss 351. The result of this test mule was the 6.4L v10 your talking about. Get your facts straight before you insult people.
First of all its a 6.8 v10, boss was the codename from ford, and it was set to go into in the 05 mustang redesign corbra, but had too much power and was put into a truck
its not a 6.8L. its a 6.4. i can show you viable proof of this because its the same engine that went straight into the Cobra and GR-1 concepts. it was never meant to go into the 2005 Mustang Cobra because there wasn't supposed to be another Cobra. Ford and Shelby already agreed in 2004 that they would build a new GT500 and release it in 2007.
Show me the viable proof, And they were planning a cobra with the redesign before it actually happend, shelby just made an offer Ford coulndt refuse, so we got the gt 500. There was a supercharged 4.6 in the GR-1, IT is the exact same motor thats in the V10 Trucks, Watch the other video dumbass
Just high performance engines typically redline higher than a normal engine. For instance, a regular Ford Taurus redlines at around 5500 RPMs, while my Taurus SHO redlines near 7K.
A v10 in a stang is useless. Just the customizing it takes to make this work + power/dollar cost is retarded.

Yes, you obviously care that you will win but no one else gives a damn about you. Cars are about fun. You NEED something else in order to feel better about yourself. Mustangs can be fubn cars win or lose.

Damn thats the best sounding V10 I'v heard. The Viper sounds like a V6 on steroids. I would of definitly bought this car if it went into production.
JayGeePee1 2 years ago
Why couldn't Ford have put it into production.....why??? What an ANIMAL!
Takis48 2 years ago 31
well its one of fords modular motors. the blocks were designed to adapt to v-6, 8 and 10 cylinder configurations
jasonbc69 2 years ago
ok correction its in 5.0 mustang and super fords. type in V10 mustang in the search box

ok once and for all, this was originally a 4.6 DOHC 32V engine with an extra pair of cyldinders grafted on and stretched heads. IT IS NOT RELATED TO THE TRITON ENGINE FAMILY IN THE F-SERIES. It originally displaced 281 ci. but now displaces 351ci. or 5.8L. MM&FF dubbed this car the BOSS 351. call me out if im wrong but check the website and search "BOSS 351" first.
seniorcat03 3 years ago 3
You're right. Motor Trend did an article on it as well. They said a lot about the engine and also mentioned that it was in no way related to the 6.8L Triton V-10.

the crazy shit is that this engine isnt even working hard...if Ford Racing can pull every trick in the book and get 550hp out of the out race prep 5L cammer imagine this beast with race ported heads, aggressive cams, full cat-less exhaust on C16 and a race tune?? memo to Ford: build this engine now!! ha ha
seniorcat03 3 years ago
they shoulda just put the 6.8 v10 outta the f series trucks lol

seriously, the idiot who posted this doesn't know anything about this car.
first of all, its not a 351. its a 390c.i. 6.4L V10.
secondly, this wasn't called a Boss. nor is the engine apart of the Boss development program. all this was was just a mule for the components used in the Cobra Concept.
Elmo187 3 years ago
If you think this is the 6.4L used in the Cobra and GR-1 concepts, than your the one who knows nothing about this car. This engine was made using 2 DOHC 4.6L v8s used in the Mustang Cobras from 1996-2004. Two cylinders from one engine were essentially welded on to the other. And because this engine displaced 5.8 liters, they called it the Boss 351. The result of this test mule was the 6.4L v10 your talking about. Get your facts straight before you insult people.

um proof? you can't go and say all this stuff without showing viable (not Wikipedia) proof.
Elmo187 3 years ago
its 6.8l, watch the other videos, by your math this motor is a 9.2l v16
orbitofdoom16 3 years ago
First of all its a 6.8 v10, boss was the codename from ford, and it was set to go into in the 05 mustang redesign corbra, but had too much power and was put into a truck
orbitofdoom16 3 years ago
its not a 6.8L. its a 6.4. i can show you viable proof of this because its the same engine that went straight into the Cobra and GR-1 concepts. it was never meant to go into the 2005 Mustang Cobra because there wasn't supposed to be another Cobra. Ford and Shelby already agreed in 2004 that they would build a new GT500 and release it in 2007.
you sir, are just talking out of your ass.
Elmo187 3 years ago
Show me the viable proof, And they were planning a cobra with the redesign before it actually happend, shelby just made an offer Ford coulndt refuse, so we got the gt 500. There was a supercharged 4.6 in the GR-1, IT is the exact same motor thats in the V10 Trucks, Watch the other video dumbass
orbitofdoom16 3 years ago
LMAO! HE DID IT AGAIN! just like i thought.
i prove him wrong and he deletes the comment. awesome.
Elmo187 3 years ago
upp, yeah no way to 4.6s equal 5.8, at least we are in the ball park
orbitofdoom16 3 years ago
Unless the redline is around 5K, which I HIGHLY doubt for a V10, I don't think this guy was even putting the pedal to the floor!
Shrike2415 3 years ago
why would you doubt the redline being 5K for a V10?
Anhaedra 3 years ago
The redline on my V8 is 7K, and V10's typically redline somewhere between 8K-9K.
Shrike2415 3 years ago
I see... Are they better balanced or something?
Anhaedra 3 years ago
Just high performance engines typically redline higher than a normal engine. For instance, a regular Ford Taurus redlines at around 5500 RPMs, while my Taurus SHO redlines near 7K.
Shrike2415 3 years ago
The V10 has a smaller bore and therefore less rotating mass on each piston alowing it to easily (and more safely) rotate at a quicker rpm.
