  • i was at the track when that happened. i was about to go into the track to watch but i went to the bathroom and didn't see the wreck. My cousins and my brother saw it though

  • @logixisbad I was about to say no, you're thinking of Michael Waltrip's crash. Then I realized that it was 2002 and it is now 2011, meaning this was about 10 years ago and Waltrip was about 20 years ago. I feel so old now.

  • @hamlinfann The cars and track was not designed for that wall to open like that and he plowed directly into the edge of the wall. The cars and tracks today are much better designed to protect the drivers.

  • @edilee01 Correct the cars and tracks are safer but this was an extraordinary situation and I don't think that the COT would do any better taking a hit like that. The impact is restricted to a very small point on the car and roll cages are designed to spread the impact but here it's just not possible. The only thing that could be done to prevent this kind of accident is elliminate the gates

  • Thats the gate where the trucks go in and out of the infield. This happened during practice and the track workers did not put all the supports that hold the gate closed in place.

  • The vehicle entrance is in turn 3, not 2. This was a pedestrian gate from the looks of it. It has sense been removed.

  • The gate was closed but not latched the proper way. Did not have the Cables and steel bar in place . But that has been removed since then when they remolded the next year.

  • This is the twice time that this kind of crash happened at Bristol in exactly this spot due to layout failure. (1990 M. Waltrip and this one)

    Does a driver yet have to die to make them change that spot?!

  • Its not the track layout, its the fact that there was a gate right there that when hit, moved out of the way and put the car directly into the end of the wall. That gate has since been turned into a continuous wall and replaced with a tunnel.

  • ummm no. Bristol is not tunneled it still has a gate, maybe not in the same spot but last time I went to bristol (this year) I watched them bring cars in through the gate.

  • Yes in a roll over, but you are open to be hit by a myriad of objects, the fact that they usually don't is due in part to luck.

  • Dude, you are misinterpreting what I'm saying pretty badly. I'm only referring to head injuries, yes all that R/D is well worth it. I'm saying in F1(and pretty much any open wheel series)there is a very real chance that you may get your melon squashed that just doesn't exist in other forms of motor sports. That's all I'm saying.

  • luck? lol safety isn't luck its called millions put into research and development,also the cars dont do 230 mph nascar doesnt even do 230 mph.formula 1 cars top out at 200 and only at some tracks,most of the races they average about 150 to 175 mph...

  • Sorry about the 230mph, I was thinking of the IRL. I never said they weren't safe, But in racing there will always be an amount of danger, and not having a roof adds to that. If in a crash, a wheel (or pretty much anything) smacks you in the head at 150-175mph you WILL die, and all that carbon fiber and R/D isn't going to mean a thing.

  • these are are the safest cars in racing...Formula 1 cars are the entire cockpit is completely made of carbon fiber which is stronger than steel when layered..know your facts

  • I'm not saying Formula 1 cars are more or less safe, but I think a lot of there safety is due to luck, and the style of racing in general,(like there are probably more crashes in one or two NASCAR races, that an entire season of F1) rather than specific car safety. Yes the carbon fiber is nice, but realistically, how safe can a 230mph car without a roof be? Its only a mater of time before someone gets smacked in the head with something.

  • thats not ok that someone didnt close the gate corectally, that could have easily killed him if it was a few cenemeters different, they should never open those gates unless a truck is going in the track, then they should triple check that the gate is secure

  • There are no "chances" in motor sports.. that ideology couldn't even be applied to daily driving as statistically people who crash are more likely to crash again more so than people who have never crashed.. gee, wonder why your insurance goes up. Anyway, there are no "chances" in Motor Sports especially not Nascar.. anything can happen to anyone at anytime.. just look at Dale Eearnhardt, he had survived so many wrecks before then a seemingly tamed one takes his life.. Quit while you're ahead.
