  • My dad was a Zipper IP at Luke in the 60's. Kinda neat growing upp listening to the shriek-howl of the J79.

  • It's a great shame, and shows at least many key people who created this movie aren't true plane-buffs, that they used stock 'jet airplane sound' insted of the true one-of-a-kind howl of the F-104.

  • Ofcourse it's not a NF-104. It's a German F 104G, built for training purposes in the USA. The blanked out part on the tail, originally says: "The Fighting 69". This part of the movie "The Right Stuff", shows in such a marvellous way, the sleek lines, extreme beauty and brute force of the Starfighter. I love the bare-metal version.

  • G,, A, NF... Whatever. It's one hell of an airplane!!! (BTW it's a G)

  • Love the video, so please don't take offense. The NF-104 was a ROCKET assisted model of the F-104 marked by a large tube (rocket) just above the tailpipe. Would be some GREAT footage if you had it.

  • At 1:02 you can see the aircraft's tail number on the closing canopy: 63-13269. This specific aicraft is a Fokker-built German F-104G flying in USAF colors, as did a lot of German F-104's in those days as part of the German/American F-104 training program at Luke AFB. The first three digits of the same tailnumber are also visible on the tail a few times in this video: '132'. Why they blanked out the '69'-part of the serial is unclear to me...

  • nerds

you no nothing its the 234 bombkikplane

  • Thats a F-104G!Not even 104A...Look at the longer tail,different main wheels,and the ejection seat(MB Q7)

  • The nose says NF-104A to me.

  • Comment removed

  • Thats no NF, thats just a 104A, look at the nose and tail...

  • i know there probably arent many nf's in the world, but couldnt they have at least put a styrofoam mock-up on the tail where the rockets should have been for the still shots???

  • Amen. Whatever your area of knowledge is, you'll always find movies giving it the short shrift when they could have spent a couple of bucks and made things more accurate for those who appreciate it. (I complain a lot.) 8-]

  • fuck you

  • The DVD of The Right Stuff has the best sound of any movie...........put the cinema surround on.......turn it up to about 20 and listen to the F-104 taking off........its really something!! Best penetration ever!

  • Most of these clips are from the movie 'The Right Stuff', where they actually used a bog standard F-104. The NF-104 was a tad different. IIRC, it had a reaction control system and a rocket engine for training astronauts.

  • One other note,General Yeager broke numerous speed and altitude records in the F-104 and was almost killed doing so.

  • Actually the first supersonic aircraft was the Bell X-1 flown bt the greatest pilot ever,Big.General Chuck Yeager.

  • Great pilot, but a total asshole. Met him at Luke AFB.

  • Damn that sucks, seems o.k. when they interview him.Don't know if I want to meet him now. When was it you met him at Luke.

  • He was mainly just short with enlisted guys. I wasn't yet a SSGT, so as far as he was concerned, I was an ant that was fire guarding his jet. This was in the summer of 2002 or 03. He has a ranch or something in Arizona and still comes out to the base from time to time. He is God when he's there, and he knows it. He can fly any jet at any time. That's power.

  • Met Bob Hoover at an airshow, was walking (in uniform) towards the flight line, he pulled over in his car "need a ride lt.? I knew hew it was so "hell yeah" He did not know I knew until I said it was an honor to meet him, he turned red!!! I gave him a tour of my tanks, and he gave me a tour of his commander and spent 30 minutes answering my questions on the mustang, combat etc.. I am sure he had stuff to do, but took the time to just talk!!! very nice man and a great pilot!!

  • See, that's how it should be.

  • I still hear the theme music from "The Right Stuff" when I see this....

  • anyone know the name of the song?

  • actually now that i think about it.This is a historically inacurate clip to a hero of flight and a man who is "THE RIGHT STUFF".

  • The NF-104 was a modified F-104 with a rocket. For training of USAF astronauts. 3 were built.

  • no they were proposed during the korean war to get away from migs

  • I'm proud to say my Dad helped design this plane....along with many others during his 45 years at Lockheed.

  • Oh oh oh? the BD-10 was the first supersonic homebuilt jet. Well, until the tail broke up and it disintegrated. and of course... click my vids, you'll find 3 of the only 5 on youtube of it, but mine are the only actual vids. and for those who don't know, the bd-10 came after the bd-5, eg coors silver bullet.

  • the F-104 was NOT the first supersonic fighter. The F-100 Super Sabre was the first operational fighter capable of going supersonic in level flight. The F-104 was the first operational mach 2 fighter. It's build like a rocket with wings.

  • The mig 19 was first. You are stuck in america universe. The EE Lightning was the first operational fighter to break mach 2.

The usa isn't the only country in the world.

  • The F-100 flew for the first time a few months before the MiG-19, and was introduced into the Air Force the year before the MiG-19 was. The MiG-19 was the first supersonic Russian fighter.

  • Nope, the F-102 was the first level flight supersonic fighter

  • @rangeley14 I thought it was the North American F-100 Super Saber??

  • Wasn't the Navy F-8 an older aircraft and also supersonic?

  • The f-104 Starfighter was the first airplane to attain Mach 2 in level flight. The NF-104 was something else, lookup nf104DOTcom Robert W. Smith

  • Taken from the great movie "The right stuff" from 1983. It's about Chuck Yeager.

This is not an NF-104, it misses the rocket engine. It's a German AF F-104G from Luke AFB AZ where the German AF did their training.

The Germans lost many 104's for two reasons, they had over 800 of them. There were no experienced pilots. After WW2 they weren't allowed to have an air force. The 104 was pretty unforgiving and they had to figure out alot themselves with these sad results.

  • Completely correct, I watched them fly at Luke in the 60's I can still remember their distinctive howl.

  • The Krauts kept killing themselves in 104's because they are smarter than the rest of the world. They didn't listen to Lockheed and take the training seriously. When they wised up and payed attention they stopped dying in 104's.

  • Not the 1st supersonic craft...plus the video shows an F-104...nice vid, though!

  • F-104 starfighter, 21 foot wingspan

  • Cool video

  • All engine and very little wing.

  • One of the most dangerous fighters to fly. High rate of sink. Engines that flamed out. Three hundred german pilots died in them. Awesome power.

  • still, the F104 and the NF104 weren't the first supersonic fighters at all.

  • Really cool. A classic aircraft... historic...
