  • id lol if some had i phone with francium in it, and they went to the pool with their phone

  • I love the 1812 overture.

  • fuck the music. BTW very nice.

  • Not completely relevant, but, wanna hear a joke about pottasium? k.

  • thumbs up if u thought it was tin

  • SodiumSodiumSodiumSodiumSodiumSodiumSodiumSodiumSodiumSodiumSodiumSodiumSodiumSodiumSodiumSodium

    BATMAN

  • Lol, so fake. Smoke is clearly visible. You used some kind of explosive, not sodium. No orange flame means no hydrogen is burning, and that is what causes the "boom" in real sodium in water experiment.

  • @upisoft2

Absolutely not fake. READ please! You will not see the smoke and orange flame because we weighted the Sodium to sink into the water.

  • @ProjectEpiphany And how the hydrogen ignites underwater, given your explanation? It surely needs oxygen to ignite and that is usually the oxygen from the air.

  • Sodium, being pyrophoric, rips water apart for the pieces to settle on H gas and NaOH in a VERY exothermic reaction. Hydrogen is required in both products which implies that a great deal of chaos is going on as the compounds rearrange. It makes sense to me that while most O is acquired by the Na to form NaOH, some has recombined into O2 gas (helping to fuel the boom). I don't believe it to be complete combustion but it is still a very impressive amount of work is being done!

  • @ProjectEpiphany Sodium will react with OH ions not with hydrogen. Thus Sodium will not rip OH ions apart allowing pure oxygen to escape. The reaction is surely exothermic but you have enough water there to absorb all the energy.

  • @upisoft2 H and OH split is indeed basic chemistry involved. However, we observed something that requires us to hypothesize that something else is going on as well. I don't have a doctorate in chemistry so there is likely something going on that is beyond me right now. All I can say now is that I have enough integrity to not fake a demo...ever. Besides, trying to explaining something unexpected is THE FUN of science. You are missing out being so skeptical.

  • @ProjectEpiphany Yeah, ok. Start with the mystery of the smoke that is clearly visible. Wish you luck.

  • @upisoft2

Just like when the Na is on top of the water you will get water vapor from the heat. That part is not a mystery. The "smoke" is just condensation on a cool afternoon.

  • @ProjectEpiphany You are... really smart sir.

  • @upisoft2 apparently you have never played with sodium yourself before...I have done a similar expirament with a 1 gallon jug. I did not weigh down the sodium though, dropped it in, and within 10 seconds the whole jug exploded. the more sodium you use, the more violent the reaction becomes...small little bits don't do much, but a large chunk can do some decent damage...

  • Chuck Norris's fart

  • Is this guy afraid of water or something?

  • That was so totally epic!!!!!!

  • What Sorcery is this?!

  • This is so metal.

  • So if it was just sodium, then where can I purchase this item online, and do I have to be a Teacher?

  • Was it Sodium Nitrate used or just Sodium? You mean table salt? Or is this the no refined table salt?

  • @efferize

Just Sodium the element (not in a compound). Sodium Chloride is table salt.

  • Go for the Trifecta! Magnesium, Cesium, and Sodium.

  • whatbdid he put in the trash bin

  • @msladyybug water

  • Try using cesium :P

  • overture...same music when V destroys the parliament LMAO grat music for explosions and happy new year!

  • lol how to not conduct a safe science experiment, drop in chemical and run away.

  • Wait, if sodium in water explodes, then how come NaCl (salt) doesn't have the same reaction?

  • @801Milcah Because NaCl dissolves in water by forming ions. The ion Na+ has properties that differ from those of the metal Na.

  • mmm.. Well Shouldn't it burst into yellow flame I suppose!?

  • Off to the public swimming pool I go!

  • Do you know any jokes about sodium?

    Na

  • @yodaking13 ¿Conoce usted algún chiste sobre silicio?

    Si

  • @yodaking13 Hahah. I love being able to understand that joke.

  • @yodaking13 O I see wat u did thar.

  • @yodaking13 What's a chemist favorite drink? B e E r; what is a scientist favorite food? Ba C O N. What do all male scientist like? V Ag I Na.

  • @yodaking13 Have you heard the one about Sodium Bromate?

    NaBro4

  • @yodaking13 What did Sodium Chloride get arrested for?

    It was assault

  • Your Chemistry teacher is the (sic) bomb.....

  • What's the vid next week? Gasoline and air explosion?

  • WOW I want to be a chemist!!!

  • @00TvEpf00 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky

  • Il manipule ça sans gants ? OMG

  • Some kid at my school stole this from the science lab and threw a brick of it into the toilet the size of an apple.... The toilet shattered.

  • ding dong ditch sodium style!

  • The explosion is the drum lol. 0:17.

  • Really wasn't expecting that music to happen as it did.

  • look this:

    /watch?v=7SDKNuXwaxM

    burning magnesium.... ;D

  • Where can I get sodium? I want to throw a basketball sized on in the pool :P

  • Thumbs up for the Star-Spangled Banner :D

  • haha the guy didn't see it haha

  • Cool reaction. Were the American flag and 1812 Overture necessary though? :P

  • @thisisntagoodname It's a bomb.. so yes.

  • @dandymcgee The Chinese flag would be more fitting, since they were the ones who discovered explosives. :3

(Also, 1812 Overture has nothing to do with the U.S., it was written by a Russian about the French Revolution. :3).

  • @thisisntagoodname Regarless of origin we play it as a backdrop to 4th of July fireworks presentations. It would be an adopted American anthem for that holiday.

  • Now i know what i want for christmas :)

  • <3 Na + H2O <3

  • Oh my god! so funny! put like a boulder size next time! I want to see it EXPLODE!!!!!

  • what do you mean donate to science? you can totally still use that thing

  • Just put some pieces of rusty metal in there and you got yourself a giant grenade

  • That was my trashcan. Jackass

  • Try Francium

  • @VPR2001 unfortunatley that wouldnt be possible...too radioactive

  • what a waste of water

  • AMERICAAAAAAA!!!!!!

  • one word LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOOL wait...

  • Can sodium be used as submersible propellant? Can the reaction be controlled?

  • My brother used to take black spider crackers and throw them in the gardner,s garbige sacks to make holes in them now this he will like:)

  • Nice NaOH spill going right into the ground.

  • i would do that in a swimming pool where girls are swimming :D

  • use potassium next time...

  • Damn science, you scary!

  • Sodium is to water as Hot girls are to men.

  • Cool story bro

  • that'ss alot of sodium

  • Comment removed

  • Is this how they make sodium hydroxide NaOH? LOL!

  • r.i.p Garbage can

  • lol i remmber watching this nice but... how many liters of water again???

  • So my friend asks me if i know any good Sodium jokes, and i say "Na"

  • @SaskueSucks K.

  • Why are you touching the water, it's caustic soda, you must be carefull when doing this kind of things.

  • Amerikans just have Fun if they can blow something up or polute anything..

  • @SargonvonThule I don't know any "Amerikans" who particularly enjoy polluting. Littering, perhaps, but those are the scumbag bottom of society, not commonplace people. As for blowing stuff up, I'm pretty sure EVERY nationality enjoys that from time to time.

  • thumbs up if hirschfeld sent you here

  • that was a huge sodium junk.... where did you get that hahahahah

  • scadoosh

  • i dont advise you to touch the trash can, cause the natrium hydroxide formed after explosion is highly caustic.

  • why did we never do stuff like this in my high school! :(

  • Meanwhile in Africa...

  • What happens if you drop sodium into liquid nitrogen?

  • LOL

  • LOL!

  • Haha, loved the American flag at the end. Way to you use science as a symbol of your patriotism

  • You forgot to tell us how many grams you used....

  • @Ozarkorganicshiitake

I don't know the actual mass of Na. I videotaped while my partner there set up the demo. The piece was about golf ball size.

  • @ProjectEpiphany Bull shit size of a golf ball

  • @grifburk no really. The massive explosion is because we made it sink below the surface.

  • man.... wow DON'T HOLD THAT WITH YOUR BARE HANDS!!!!!

  • @nerdalert226 He didn't. It was wrapped in wire and hanging from a weight to drag it down.

  • @nerdalert226 dude the reaction is from mixing sodium and water it wont just blow up in your hand

  • @coldblood335 still, it isnt the explosion its just plain dangerous hold it in your bare hands

  • @ProjectEpiphany how much Na did you use it this video

  • @mrquimby1212 I don't remember exactly, but it was probably about a golf ball or less sized piece.

  • @iliad1992

You haven't read the other posts so I'll help you out

    1) He isn't holding the Na. It is wrapped in chicken wire and weighted so that it WILL sink to the bottom. We intentionally wanted to see what it would do if forced under the water. Thanks for watching and don't be so critical, especially when you haven't done your homework :)

  • OK...anybody who's done chemistry in highschool would know that this video is fake and sodium is not used. first off...u can not handle sodium wif bare hand since it reacts with skin moisture and cause burn on ur hand but the guy in video does hold it without gloves on. 2nd...sodium does not explode once it reaches water...it's less dense than water...1st it would float and then ignites and if it continues, it would explode but not in this way, it will divide in glowing pieces and jump around!

  • Do you think that if I put a chunk of sodium in the tank of a friend's toilet tank at a party, would it crack the tank or would it lead to less funny prank?

  • @lawnguylander

    IT WILL BLOW THE TANK!

  • who says nerds cant have fun

  • @iggyTX361 Everyone said that. We just have fun anyway XD

  • 0łolllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll -

  • @Totopickle It wasn't a sidewalk and all in all was no worse than some Drano in the toilet.

  • this is unbelievable...

    /watch?v=47-5Baix0Fw

  • バケツさんかわいそう・・・。虐待では?

  • 0:12- He's like, do it again I wasn't looking!

  • Trolololololol

  • thats a lot of sodium .___.

  • Best video EVAR

  • I Llove chemical reactions

  • BAD AZZ LOL

  • I think you should have got pure sodium that would have floated , the explosion wouldn't be so compressed and go out so quickly then.

  • @TheBeatlesRUL3

When you just use sodium it floats (as you said) and the explosion is mostly smoke and a quick flash. We wanted to see how much water could be displaced so we weighted the sodium we had left.

  • that is crazy man! I'm putting this on my science group's FB.

  • run forest run

  • what kind of salt!?

  • @oOWinterNightOo first off it is not salt. standard table salt is NaCl sodium chloride . sodium is in group one of of the periodic table which every element reacts violently with water it is elemental sodium Na.

  • ahhh america.. where you can blow things up where ever, whenever and not get in trouble jk

  • GO DOC!!!! woooo

  • I remember when you showed us that last year in Doctor Pinkham's room!

  • WOW!!!!!!!!! SOOOOO COOOOOOOOOL!!!

  • I wanna try this in my toilet.

  • yeah thanks for uploading sodium is very reactive it also reactive moisture but potassium is more reactive than sodium!!!!

  • @cmilla646

we added some mass to the Na in order to give it the most contact with water. If it had floated on top like most reactions do it would not have blown apart the trash can (I predict)

  • @ProjectEpiphany Surely if you dropped the Na in with extra force it would of submerged properly without adding mass?

  • @LeafRaider

It might. We only got one shot at it so we wanted to make certain.

  • Thats my science teacher!!! XD

  • BAHAHAHA FAIL xD

  • sodium? just put some chlroine it will turn the whole container into salt, well maybe

  • why is the guy running he is scarred to get his clothes wet or wat????

  • that's how you kill fish in a barrel!

  • it would be better if you first added lots of phenolphthalein in the water before you drop the sodium

  • Why can't someone get 20-30 grams of cesium and drop that mofo in the ocean

  • Holy crap!

  • That honorable trash can died in the name of scince!

  • how much sodium was that

  • what was the background song?

  • @HuRtBrOkE20 1812 Overture (appropriate since in that part of the song they blow off canons)

  • NICE

  • the running guy looked pissed cuz he didnt see it

  • cool guys dont look at explosions.

  • bill gates what are you doing playing chemist

  • Sodium hydroxide! <3

  • Try reacting Cesium with water. That is a better explosion.

  • IT GO BOOM! LOL.

This is amazing. Explosions and science. Can't have one without the other XD

  • well done! What did you do about the sodium Hydroxide?

  • epic music

  • That teacher BETTER run!

  • I love how he runs like he's on the football team lol

  • I bet the military is making use of this new improvised weapon. Hell put a large amount of this in the ballast tanks of sub and it is going to be doomed

  • What's the music from 0:01 to 0:06?

  • @ps2beck

just some royalty free stuff we had in our library. Comes from BackTraxx

  • Stand back, I'm about to do SCIENCE!

  • You should replay it even more!

  • lol get a whole bunch of sodium and bring it to school give it to ur friends and tell them to drop them into every toilet in the school at the same time that would be awesome

  • This is what High school chemistry should be, not 5 weeks of nonstop "stoichy"

  • @kirby4d This is actually a middle school class:)

  • @JCLYM Thats great! It should continue into HS to show you what chem is.

  • @kirby4d

You'll need the stoichy too :)

  • @kirby4d This was high school chemistry when I found the jar of potassium lol. Well earned 5 day suspension.

  • @SuperGil420 Hell yea. Suspension is just vacation. High school chem scared me away from being a chem major cause it was boring and all book work. Now Im an academically-depressed poli sci senior V_V

  • I liked chemistry as a kid because I thought all it was was blowing sh*t up.

    Great video!

  • USA USA USA!!!!

  • Some might not think thats a very powerful explosion - but it is. To have enough energy to displace and explode 40 gallons of water (approximately 320 pounds of water) and bust up a tough rubbermaid trashcan, that takes a LOT of power. I'd run like a son-of-a-bitch, too!

  • ThIS iS aWeSoMe DuDe !!!!!!!!1

  • "Eh-MERICA i solute thee" at the end

  • haha that's great.

  • potasium nitrate

  • nice bgm XDD

  • poor trash can... what a waste thing of how many toilets you could have blown up with that much sodium

  • how much sodium was that? it look s like you threw in a handful
