@GreenDaysummerify pretty sure you're wrong there bud. sure they probably don't listen to Petula Clark, but her song was super famous back in the day. So Green Day has definitely heard it before. It may have just been subconscious; however, Green Day has ripped off a few bands before. So either Billie goes out of his way to rip off artists or he has a problem of letting his subconscious affect his music.
@queerp well, getting inspirations from songs is a common method. its actually can be considered ripping off, but its alright since they actually created a different feel.. thats what green day probably did, but im sure majority of artists has done that b4
of course Wilco would copy The Cure, they were a very successful band and Blink-182 stated them as one of their main influences i mean, even listen to Friday, I'm In Love, amazing song, and you can hear where Blink-182 got their sound from. plus, Robert Smith's voice is so cool.
@misty6543211 i noticed that too, when i first heard that song on the radio. yeah it's like the first 5 notes of the solo, then it goes something like Van Halen style...
if this guy knew anything about music he would realise that a lot of these especially the green day ones ... these are VERY COMMON CHORD PROGRESSIONS ..
Why is everybody beefing it's a video no two songs have ever been the same vocally and medolically yet coldplay were sued for copyright on viva la vida by joe satriani i disagreed with that because the satriani version was instrumental not vocal.
The Chuck Berry/Beach Boys one made a lot of sense, because ska has very deep rock n' roll roots and one of the Beach Boys' main influences was the king or rock himself, Chuck Berry.
@yourNAMEhere905 Actually, the record company screwed Chuck Berry out of that one because he was black. The Beach Boys' version was pushed through because they thought it was more "acceptable" from white artists.
@yourNAMEhere905 I should also elaborate on this.. while the Berry version WAS released beforehand, the litigation of it was in favor of the Beach Boys because of Berry's race. Should've made that a bit clearer in my previous post. :)
@emphaticleech very true. one of the newer Beach Boys that joined the group recently is black though, too. im sure if one of the Beach Boys were black then, that would have pissed EVERYONE off majorly.
Oh, but the Lush song is actually a remake of an oldies "I wanna be your Boyfriend" by the Rubinoos - THAT'S the song people claim Avril actually ripped off with "Girlfriend".
I knew that the Barbie Girl song and "Can't Fight the Moonlight" sounded the same! No one else believed me. haha but I'm glad you put that one in there
actually, Avril Lavigne's underground? (not sure of that's the title of that song) is similar to that Greenday and Petula Clark song, OMG what a rip-off of UB40 song, LeAnn Rimes track was great, i really liked that track, Barbie girl was :S, Lush are way better than Avril, lol
I keep seeing all these similar sounding songs video's but no one has put up the Jam's that's entertainment and that song by the racountours..I can't remember the name ,but it was the first single. It also sounds like a stones song.
@tnn1 Erase that first post, it was the beatles song taxman that sounds like that rac (song) song Steady As She Goes and a Jam song...I just don't kno if it's That's Entertainment.lol
you know, that last riff is one of the most frequently used riffs ever. i also found it in Bush's Glycerine, and in take me home, country road's chorus, in Let It Be. and it appears in dozens of pop songs like james blunt's beautiful or Torn by some other girl. no big deal finding another song that uses it
Nope, neither Semisonic, Green Day or Better than Ezra invented that riff. It was my dad's band 'Spunky'! They were way before all of these, in the 80s!
First of all, green day is infamous for using very few chords in their songs. Their first album (in the early 90s) people said they'd never make it anywhere since they only used 3-4 chords in the ENTIRE ALBUM. It's pretty funny realy
Second of all, Led Zeppelin stole LYRICS but not riffs. Led Zeppelin was almost always original in it's riffs.
Thirdly, Paris Hilton definitely paid UB40.
Lastly, you must remember there are only so many chords. Old rock 'n roll was nearly ALL on the same chords.
All of these Youtube videos about song rip-offs are dumb...guys, its ok if people use the same similar tune! OMG SHUT UP YOU HAVE NO IDEA WTF YOURE TALKING ABOUT AND IF YOU DO AND SUPPORT IT, youre dumb...just sayin...
The Greenday vs Petula Clark is bullshit, THEY EVEN SAY IN THE ALBUM SLEEVE that its her song, as they even use the lyrics, its a modified cover version, do your homework.
Oh, this is some bullshit. I learned a lot about copyright. With music, if the melody or melodic section has been stolen without a single note or beat that's off, then there's a HUGE issue. The underlying chords are not copyright because there are many more songs that use chord progression similar to others. For example, many of those songs that were compared were in different keys. How can you accuse plagarism on that?
yeah ur rite ! but theres so many songs & so little chord stucture left, that some of the newer sound a like songs , the writers dont try to copy, its just an idea they didnt know was thought of bfore, unless it was takin from chuck berry! funny u end with vaniila ice rippin queen, he claimed he had an extra chord in there, iggy took that from ,i want u so bad. to go back ,ill walk the line by johnny cash is this land is your land
some of these are definitely accidents- others not so much, one of my "first" riffs on my bass that I thought was original I just found out today isn't, in fact it was used in Dream Theater's "Panic Attack", which I only just listened to because it was on my recommended videos page
TL;DR I'm one sad panda finding out one of my creations isn't a creation, at least it's in a good song!
did anyone else notice that "When we pretend that were dead by L7" also sounds exactly like the puddle of mudd vs suicidal tendencies thing. thats kinda creepy D:
Ok a lot of songs sound like the Kinks picture book melody, the second song against Green Day sounded NOTHING like Waiting only the vocals the instruments were completely different, AND Semisonic wasnt even FORMED until after Green Day wrote when I come Around!!!!!!!!!! so Shut up!
Nice work! A good TRIO you could add here to top the list is The Chiffons "He's so fine", plagiarised by Harrison's "My sweet Lord" and both further parodied in Jonathan King's "He's so fine" in the style of "My sweet Lord"!... :)))
on the last one, the green day riff was actually first, the used it on a song on their first album in 1990, but i guess then decided they didn't like the song, so they "retired" it, (they have never played it since the very early 90s), but they liked the guitar riff, so they re-used it with different bass/vocals/drums to make a new song.
Ummmm actually, "Closing Time" by Semisonic came out AFTER Green Days "When I Come Around," so if anyone stole anything from anyone, Semisonic stole the riff from Green Day.
I don't think Green Day intentionally ripped off anyone. They're a punk/alternative rock band, and simple riffs in their songs can show up in many different songs by many genres of bands. Unless there is a notable riff, like Led Zeppelin's Black Dog for example, in another song, i dont think it should be considered real "plagiarism"
nice one, plese make a video about my post let me think of the similar songs in my opinion. Kelly Clarkson's Already Gone versus The Cure's A Letter To Elise. Skye Sweetnam's Number One versus Blink 182's What's My Age Again. Paramore's Pressure versus Avril Lavigne's My Happy Ending.
@Winterdenni my fault...i just noticed that the name of the video was "similar songs" i came here from recommended videos while watching "song rip offs" if they admit to basing a song off another song then its not ripping off...but it obviously is similar
@sTUPIfy308 Well, that sort of depends. If they included Iggy in the song writing credits for the song, then no worries, because that's what determines song royalties. But if they only credited themselves, then it's plagiarism, even if they admit to it.
Green Day have sucked since Warning came out to me. Just that nobody really remembers now because of the success of American Idiot they got more angry
Jet vs Iggy The Iggy pop song lust for like was much more distorted before but when they were approched for havin the song in a movie( I forget the title something with a train i think) they cleaned up the song and the riff sounded alot more like jets song but they had a different riff originally
Yes!! I really enjoyed it... Excellent job!! I'm impressed... Now, I realized that so many songs hv so much similarities with other songs... I think some of them are coincidences, some are plagiarism, & maybe other songs are made through the inspiration or idea based on the original songs... BTW, that's just my opinion...huhu... :)
i think Green Day when they got to Warning they ran out of idea's. Since they ripped of about 6 people on that album. Also you should have done Hold On - Green Day and Should've Known Better
Green Day vs. petula clark is stupid its only similar in the "downtown" part..dummmmm they got ripped off by alota other bands also. just look up Pindrop by asche and spencer vs. bouvld of broken dreams
Okay wtf Green Day and Petula Clark are singing the same song, why in the hell would it be different?

@sTUPIfy308 Surely, if they admitted it, then it should be counted even more.

@Winterdenni my fault...i just noticed that the name of the video was "similar songs" i came here from recommended videos while watching "song rip offs" if they admit to basing a song off another song then its not ripping off...but it obviously is similar
sTUPIfy308 1 year ago
@sTUPIfy308 Well, that sort of depends. If they included Iggy in the song writing credits for the song, then no worries, because that's what determines song royalties. But if they only credited themselves, then it's plagiarism, even if they admit to it.

Everybody rips off something. There are only so many notes that work in music

I really like this video you've made! Makes a good point. :)
P.S. - Paris Hilton is so...stupid... that she can't even make her own original song.
Xxxsorrow 1 year ago
@Xxxsorrow she didn't write the song, like alot of pop "singers". Don't blame that one on her

In the second one, Lush is actually covering a 1970s song "I wanna be your boyfriend" by The Rubinoos

Waiting and The other song aren't that identical, the only thing that is the same is that same note

when Green Day realesed their album Warning they ripped off like 7 artists. Guess they ran out of idea's for that album.
birdy47 1 year ago
some of these like the last one with "when i come around" are really just chord progressions. most of them on the other hand are blatant rip offs

the green day "downtown" one is clearly not plagiarism i'm sure somewhere they give credit cause its like the same
Kellen1337 1 year ago

Interestingly enough, I've never heard a song that Green Day ripped off that didn't actually sound better than the original.

@AcidBogey Actually, Green Day's song was released before Semisonic's and a lot of the others are very coincidental. I am not convinced.
