I've swum with giant octopus in Puget Sound. They are amazing animals. Each one I saw had a different mood and a different personality. Some can be grumpy and might wrestle with an annoying diver, but they don't target people as prey. Octopi are great survivors because they are shy and cautious and use stealth. The idea of a freshwater octopus that has adapted to hunt people is interesting, but just isn't plausible

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of anything having to do with horror--including lost tapes--but I just can't help to notice that this episode is nearly identical to Stephen King's story 'The Raft'. Mainly because they both share a group of teens taking a trip to a lake and encounter some starnge monster and they take refuge on a raft. Just pointing things out.
