$800 and Made in China...... No Thanks. another 200-400 would buy you a Classic Cave Astrola 10" . This scope is worth 10.00 in labour costs. The rest for 800.00 goes to the greedy suits. The shipping would cover the Chinese workers pay for a month.
I think it would be a good idea to use someone who knows what thay're talking about to present the products instead of someone who has to read continously the specifications of the scope.
What is the diameter of the base? Can anyone help me with this? I called Meade - 2 times. First they said they would have to call me back (and did not). The second time they hung up on me trying to "find the answer".
Youguys do good magazine! This was a great video, though the editor had dry mouth that get's a little anoying in the video on my high end sound system LOL. Anyways this was a great video and very helpful, I think ti has decided me to buy the 16" Lightbridge. Thanks for the help! IC.
lol i find it funny that Astronomy magazine can't put a red dot on a telescope the right way! Anyways i own a small Meade DS2114 & am gettiong into the Messier objects & DSO's. Im really into astronomy & am looking for a nice light bucket. Im wondering if I should get the Lightbridge 12" scope for $899 or get a Celestron Nexstar 8" SE shmidt cass. telescope for $1199. What do you guys think i should do. Im leaning towards the lightbridge for those ds galaxies and nebulae & also cuz its cheaper!!
@hiian123 If you like visual observing DSO, then get a Dobsonian. The long focal length of the Schmidt will be very disappointing for DSOs. Plus, the difference between the 8" and the 12" is a whole magnitude. My 8" Dob will blow away the Nexstar 8" on DSOs. However, the Nexstar will blow away my Dob on the planets and the moon; my 8" Dob does alright on planetary observing, but it can't compare to an SCT. On objects like the Veil Nebula my 8" Dob will absolute run circles around the SCT!
I just received my second 10" lightbridge the fan was broke on the first one and the same on my replacement. The 26mm eyepiece will only focus when pulled out a bit. I'm having a hard time callibrating the mirrors, I have to get a laser. For what I know now I think I would shop around for a different scope.
HMM I would plannly perfer to get a celestron c14 tube and just buy the tripod for 200 euros or make your own out of bearings and steel, and with this celestron 14 inch telescope youll be having a mini me-hubble telescope in your very own backyard lad,say i would perfer the optical tube 14" then this!
Well i can't suggest you the 4 SE beacuse is very little diameter, and the dobsonians are reflectors and they born for visual use. For a good initial job in astrophoto i suggest you an apochromatic refractor with, of course another guide scope (with a guiding camera) mounted with it. All mounted on a equatorial mount.
Help found :), I think you shlud get the Celestron Nexstar 4SE becuase it gathers light ,and its great for astrophotography, because the eyepiece is in the back its easier to take pics, REMEBER YOU NEED A CAMERA THAT CAN TAKE LONG TIME EXPOSURE SHOT, this means that the cameras lens stays on for as long as you put the timer on , and shuts the lens once your time is over on the camrea long time exposure shot's
Is a 10" + worthless in an area with mild light pollution? In CT I really dont have anywhere close thats nice and dark...I was thinking of buying a Meade ETX-125 instead
If you have space and money for a scope that big, you could get an "urban filter" which filters out a bunch of light polution for viewing faint objects like galaxies and nebulae. The big size means it can still help when viewing planets and the moon and you can have fun seeing a negative image of the moon when you look away. lol If you don't have enough space, a Schmidt Cassegrain is pretty compact even at huge aperture sizes but 4 times the price of Newtonian reflectors.
i ordered the 16 inches version today with a pentax xw 30mm eyepiece to replace the existing 26mm xq. i am gonna have a lot of fun. the scope is going to be mounted permanently in a place with no light pollution at all and perfect clear skies in the north of quebec province. in astronomy its worth nothing if you have the mightiest telescope in the world and shitty observing conditions.
Red Dot view finder is on backwards, needs to be turned around. I spent an hour and a half putting my 16" togeather, and Ive been an electrician for 25 years, NO WAY she put this all togeather in 20 minutes, it would take that long just to remove everything from the packing material and read the instructions. Mike Kelly
Your right and she seems really nervous when she is talking (its like she knows that it took her more than 20 min and is afraid that someone will find out)
Maybe she's not nervous. Maybe she's just agitated because the scope reminds her how her exhusband would spend all his nights with his scope instead of her.
@ctguy1955 You are correct on all points. She probably has very limited knowledge of astronomy, too. Listen to the way that she talks: it sounds very strained, rehearsed, and from a script! A person that had any "real" knowledge of telescopes and astronomy would not have sounded so strained. If she had any real knowhow, then she would have noticed the finder was on backwards when she was pointing to it! This is one reason why I don't read Astronomy anymore; nothing but a pack of fucktards!
She is just reading a card or prompter. I just tried to take some pictures using a scopetronix DSLR 2" and a nikon D100 (wifes camera) and the pics came out really crappy. No detail (I was not using a lens inside) and I have to read up on what I was doing wrong. Learning curve with my DSI II is driving me nuts as it wont run on WIN 7 so I hooked up an old puter with win xp and it still wont see the camera drivers. Lots to do !!!!!!!
Nice informative video. If you are interested in this scope, you might want to consider Celestron's 10" Starhopper (Cooling fan, 2"/1.25" focuser) ***$500*** Mine just arrived ;)
WOW... thats not even worth asking. Okay telescopes dont make stuff look "closer", they gather more light, its the eyepiece that makes stuff look "closer". Plus you need to learn how to spell "can"
Wow I'm the 77,777 person to view this and a second later I realized this was posted in Nov 7th 2007... 7 is my lucky number! Crazy!!!

The nexstar will be best for photography...it tracks objects, whereas the dobsonian doesn't.

Is this less quality than those LX GPS series? They are alot cheaper in money, but is that because there is no GPS and alot bulkier?

Are apples less quality then oranges? Does the orange have a go-to computer?
Is a Ford Focus less quality then a Ford Crown Vic?
As to your original question, one is not less quality then the other. Just different.
