People that make fun of this scene are PATHETIC. They have no clue and should realize just because people can have children does NOT make them good parents.
@nickseider2 you don't realize this, but what you really wrote, to the discerning eye, is this: I'm scared of my feelings, and if I act tough, people won't know how scared I am.
Nice try dude.
You scared like everyone else.
Keep acting tough though, you'll fool some people.
@yohummerguy it means that you don't have to blame yourself for everything. Even when you say that you don't, your inner persona still thinks you are blaming yourself. Will says proudly "Yeah, i know" but he doesn't really mean it. Williams helps him get it all out, and causes Will to break up and finally release the pain
actually he's a badass and he had almost same past like will.
last week we have chillet a little and we spoke about the happening things in his past.. i called him that it was not his fault like 7 times or some and then he was for moment quiet and looked up in the dark sky.. he looked at me and said "i need to call my mum right now!" he explain her whit beady eyes the story and after this he give me a little hug..
Everytime I see this scene I can't help but tear up a bit. Even though it might seem a little funny to some people nowadays for being a bit dramatic and somewhat cliched, To see this character- who has had a rough life and many people throughout his life wounding him, being reached out to by his psychologist and being told that he's a good person underneath and the abuse he's suffered isn't his fault, I just find it so touching.
Didn't he [Robin Williams] say that his dad "busted his ass" to send him to college? I find this somewhat contradictory. But I guess it's not impossible. Great scene, however.
@firmlygraspi1 I...uh...didn't really get this part, what does wrench has to do with f*ck him? I'm not a complete native to America so...does this have something to do with some kind of idiom?
I'm don't think he cried b/c he thought he had become a bad person. He might have thought that, but personally I always thought that him picking the wrench meant that he thought he deserved the beatings, he deserved to be abandoned, but he didn't. No one does
If you have to be explained why he cried after seeing the whole film then your either retarded or not mature enough to understand this subject matter.
This movie made me realize that I have/had the same problems Will had... and that my cynical and pessimistic characteristics aren't personal traits of mine, but learned behaviour.
Kids are vulnerable; they trust adults and as they are the ones told off and disciplined; they are way more likely to see themselves as at fault and its harder for them to identify when an adult has wronged. On paper, Will knew that it wasn't his fault but deep down still FELT like he'd done something wrong and any authority figure was against him; but once he could trust sean, he listens to him, and once he listens he can truly believe that it wasn't his fault and he as a breakthrough.
Note how Will is hesitant, defensive and guarded but less than he used to be as he has developed some trust in Robin Williams' character. This disappears when he breaks down.
@halfhourof8MuSt Damon and Affleck nursed this movie through YEARS and YEARS of Hollywood. Most people just ram through a remake or some "reboot" or some trite regurgitation of a decent novel, because it sells movie tickets.
Ok I get that he's breaking down the attachment disorder by offering comfort (as was offered to will before, and so he feels uncomfortable accepting it - 'pushing people away before they can push him away' etc) and simply dismissing the idea that it was his own fault that he has turned out the way he has.
But I feel like I'm missing what the scene really means... someone help me!
@LiamDaLemon His whole life he has failed with regard to building lasting relationships and taking personal risks, this due to an intense lack of trust, and a fear of how those things will culminate in an inevitable letdown. So he sabotages every relationship and every personal risk he's ever considered taking, because that way he can control his own destiny and not have someone else control it for him. His shrink is modeling trust and care for Will, allowing him to finally see it in others.
@LiamDaLemon Ben Affleck's character also reinforces this for Will during the construction scene. He cares enough about Will to tell him very honestly that he cares more about Will finding his true calling than sticking around and picking up manual labor jobs just to be with his buddies. In the end, Will is able to finally see how much Skyler really cared about him, and takes a personal risk to try and win her back. This, ultimately, is the beginning of his recovery from his past abuse.
@LiamDaLemon Matt damon has had what we call in the world of Psychotherapy,a 'Breakthrough'.This is when one's negative beliefs are dismissed as fiction rather than fact.In Matt Damons case he 'broke through' from believing that his troubled childhood was his fault, when in fact it was not.Hope this helps
@LiamDaLemon - Its about mainly about Wills attachment disorder disappearing, but also about two guys developing a friendship and finally opening up to one another. Notice that Robin Williams character is also crying. Now if it wasn't for his friendship with Will, he would've never have conquered his own demons and negatives.
according to the "transcribe audio" subtitles, from 3:17 to 3:50 will's saying, "the student date one impartial more profit cast-offs about that but it before so i thought that laptop sidneigrf can param" ... so glad will was able to get in touch with his emotions and let it all out ;)
he does this so well, i can really relate to this scene because i went through nearly the exact same thing 10 years ago, not with counselling but with the domestic violence that he experienced as a child, not many people know how badly it fucks you up, even for me 5 years ago when it stopped i still think about it everyday of my life, so for those of you who know someone going through this, do what u can to help them like my friends did their best to help me
@amputate, chedderz is right, he chose the wrench because it would hurt more than the belt or stick, he wanted to show his foster dad that no matter how much he could physically hurt him, he would always be stronger than his foster father
@Frozone470 23 people to be precise, if one were to follow that formula for creating "insightful" comments. But yes, those people have hearts of granite.
ok I'm probably missing something simple here, but when he says "because fuck him, that's why" after he says he picks the wrench, is he implying that he took the wrench and hit his dad with it? I don't fully understand..
uhh i'm kinda lost on why he robin williams character kept saying "it's not your fault" ...sorry i'm bad at reading between the lines/looking at it in a deeper way
