Everytime I see this scene I can't help but tear up a bit. Even though it might seem a little funny to some people nowadays for being a bit dramatic and somewhat cliched, To see this character- who has had a rough life and many people throughout his life wounding him, being reached out to by his psychologist and being told that he's a good person underneath and the abuse he's suffered isn't his fault, I just find it so touching.

Kids are vulnerable; they trust adults and as they are the ones told off and disciplined; they are way more likely to see themselves as at fault and its harder for them to identify when an adult has wronged. On paper, Will knew that it wasn't his fault but deep down still FELT like he'd done something wrong and any authority figure was against him; but once he could trust sean, he listens to him, and once he listens he can truly believe that it wasn't his fault and he as a breakthrough.

This, ultimately, is the beginning of his recovery from his past abuse.

@flipxalex because Matt Damon's character has gone through life fearing abandonment and all the negative feelings his father had caused him, and Robin Williams attempts rid him of these fears by reinforcing the idea that it was not Matt Damon's actions which hurt him but rather other peoples.
