  • Brilliant. I discovered Van properly earlier this year, helped me rediscover the beauty in life. Going to see him in Belfast next month :)

  • You need some sunlight. Metaphysics...Yess!! Great..more of this less of the world on one's shoulders:)

  • This sounds like an obituary. The man is still alive.

While I appreciate your homage to Van your knocking of B.E.G is purely criticism of the commercial world. It sells.

While the man is a shy, arrogant bore his music will always touch those who are prepared to listen.

  • Good to know that there's still people out there who get it , Van's the best there's ever been . Veedon Fleece for me , just ahead of Astral Weeks..................

  • Brown Eyed Girl is a brilliant song, I'm not sure why you shit on it. Also if you have all the albums, why would you buy a Best Of record? But I do share your love of VM's music.

  • I'm not sure what this guy is talking about...metaphysically...cause he's talking about worldly things which has nothing to do with, "the spiritual, MYSTICAL," side of life. We are all one...the mystic is BEYOND this sad take on reality. I thank Van and many artists who take me into the mystic over and over again. The answer is always inside. Love and peace...

  • I get Van's mystical / metaphysical connection

  • You have no clue!

  • Please, please turn off this pretentious, presumptuous spiel and go some place comfortable and convenient and just LISTEN to Van's music and soak it in.

  • Good words and insights! It's great to hear such appreciation of a great talent who has contributed so much to our culture and emotional understanding. Thanks for posting!

  • great video but i hated that horror movie to it

  • What you had to say about Van is so beautiful and so true. The first Van album I bought was Wavelength, and I have now discovered al of his older music as well.

  • If only one song could be played at VM's memorial, presuming I can be forgiven for planning the occasion so far in advance, it should be "Rave On, John Donne" (studio version).

The saxophone solo that follows the narrative (with lyrics only Van could write) takes the song somewhere I've never been; and never want to leave. For me, this composition represents the core essence of Van's work.

Paraphrasing Wim Wenders: "Van Morrison's music achieves what film only aims for."

  • An absolutely excellent statement. Very well said Mark. "Brown-Eyed Girl" will never compare to something like "A Sense Of Wonder" or "Foreign window" or numerous other songs Van has written.

  • You talk of the beauty and dignity of human life but you speak so contemptuously of people ... I don't get it.

  • Good to meet another Van fan who sees the depth. Thanks.

  • Morrison's range is outstanding, and I agree the man gets better with age. I am CRAZY about his music, aren't you?

  • I perform Brown Eyed Girl and Moondance all the time (LIVE) and hate it. I want to play When The Healing Has Begun and Summertime In England but would be lynched. I think Van has had great moments: Astral Weeks, Veedon Fleece, Into The Music, Common One, No Guru and others, but the pop stuff is what he is known for. I agree with the dude. And I dig L.Bangs

  • Double Double agreement on L. Bangs, and Van, and hits versus his real great stuff !

DOn't be lynched man ! Play that stuff....try Purple Heather,...it's sick (as well as 150 others)

  • So true man - this guy's not in real world -

    btw Van didn't write BEG.

  • Yeah he did write Brown Eyed Girl and it's a damn good song. You just have contempt for it because it was popular.

  • Here are some of the lyrics to "In the Garden" on the album "No guru, no method, no teacher,"

No Guru, no method, no teacher Just you and I and nature And the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost

The "eternal summers in the garden" tend to suggest some sort of paradise. It seems pretty clear that Van is talking about metaphysical things. He's definitely no atheist. He may not be talking about a particular denomination within Christianity, but his lyrics certainly contain Christian dialogue.

  • Van has been a LIGHT OUT OF THE DARKNESS for me on many occasions, and you are spot on with this vlog. Right on, brother! They will not be playing "Madame Joy" or "In The Garden" on that dark and, dreadful day...but I will. 5 stars.

  • What is that guy on about.... ever hear Van sing No Guru, No Method, No Teacher....That's what he's about. Christians...can't stand them.

  • your on the button mate......i know what hes up to, trying, like a prick to save some god damn souls before he efffs off the planet. bloody christians are so efffffffing boring.

  • i dont mind your start, mate, but i dont like your finish, go take yourself away, sit your self down, in a dark room, play NO GURU, and see what you think. And when you are finished, go and read another book, like Richard Dawkins, work it out, creepy man. God Does Not Exist. I dont mind you having your opinions, but please, dont try and grab Van as YOUR MAN

  • He's about his own experience with living. He's and artist. He doesn't follow "false gods."

  • I'm a true Van fan. It is so that I say with respect, unsuspecting people should not be subjected to this when searching "Van Morrison" It's not right. Also, his music is not as organic, lyrics not as poetic, voice inarguably not as powerful or emotionally charging as it was in the days of Astral Weeks, His Band & The Street Choir, Tupelo Honey etc... The fact that you can't hear or feel that is insulting to the greatness of his truly great works. I should see Van when I search "Van"

  • Thank- you for that. I am also a Van Morrison fan and I live about ten minutes from the Cyprus Avenue that he sang about on Astral Weeks.

  • There is a next world, the "shadowlands" are only the tip of the iceburg.

  • Thanks for mirroring my opinion on the subject. I wish for you astral weeks.

  • That was absolutely ***A-mazing*** & I just wanted to say Thank You So Much for sharing. A moment of reflection and moving introspection I WILL never forget. LoVe & LiGht +

  • Thanks Kris!

  • @MarkGauvreau Sir you are SO right. The use of his song Wavelength on "Wavelength" a film about the emergence of Pirate Radio, and "Intelliegence Transfer" from higher dimensional beings, or ETs, which helped change the world, via "Aire-lande" and is still running, is so poiniant to your video. Great to hear deep thoughts on Van the Man

  • I like your vibe man..good to hear someone who actually thinks about stuff and ruminates over it.. love the passion man..keep it real...

  • Where is this guy? I can't help myself from coming back to it. What is his job? Is he at work or on vacation? This guy confuses me, but I love VAn Morrison too... almost as much as he does.

  • Great video! It seems that a lot of great artists "peak" (often in their 20's), and make that slow slide into mediocrity. Van is a notable exception. His recent works are just as skillful, vibrant, relevant, and illuminating as the day he sat down to record Astral Weeks (if not more so). Whatever his flaws may be, I Love the Man. And I'm grateful (and ennobled) for having experienced his art.

  • i can appreciate the way he is frustrated that at least 1 out of 3 people are not prolific fans of Van Morrison.

  • Hahahahahahahaha!

This guy thinks there'll be a "next" world!!

  • I hate how he's crying/praising van

  • But some are staying on now with the note: coypright music and lyrics reproduced by kind permission of Exile...

Maybe all he wanted in most cases was for people to use some manners and ask before using his stuff. Ya know like if you want to use my car, for instance, you better ask me first. Right?

  • Absolutley. I don't blame him one bit. An entire generation now thinks that music is free and you can do with it whatever you want.

  • Van is the man...his music helped me thru a deep depression after my father died. God bless Van ! Does anyone know why YouTube removed all the videos ?

  • Van claimed copyright infringement I believe.

  • You can see his face in the sky when the plane crosses.

  • There is a reason The Band and others whose opinions are worthy of our respect refer to "Van The Man." Once, performing on the same bill as Fleetwood Mac in the Peter Green days, and Peter had brought his mate, Nigel Watson, with him. Apparently, Morrsion's rthymn guitarist was ill, and Van asked Peter if he could use Nigel. Nigel is a decent guitarist but could not read music. Nigel attended rehearsal. Morrison opened up his song sheet and score, and told Nigel:"Play this, and nothing else."

  • Here here! keep it simple!

  • jimmyjamcam...good selection...but what about "Beside you" TB Sheets...has to be the most moving of Van's great opus...what are the "best" Van Morrison songs...do they not change by the day and the mood you are in...??

  • I loved your comments! I love Van Morrison's music and I think he is tremendously underappreciated. I will try and find the piece in Books & Culture Magazine. I don't much care for "Brown Eyed Girl," either, and I hate it when I tell people I love Van Morrison's music and they ask, "Oh...didn't he do 'Brown Eyed Girl?'"

  • Google "Lester Bangs Please Flush."

  • Good Job.

  • it's a shame that the youtube group removed all the good videos...

  • What happened there. There used to be a lot of great Van live vids on here. Where'd they go?

  • yo

    slow down

van played the spectrun at 4:30 pm

    amazing show --but 430?

  • With obvisously 'It's too late to Stop Now' as in the top ten LIVE albums ever.......C'mon VAN, (and/or Record Company) Smarten up,......or else release more Video,.... (THe only one you have released (Montreux Double Disc) is INCREDIBLE,....so keep it comin', and allow modern grass roots (You TUbe) to provide content.....

  • I purchased several cds of Vans music as a result of the many videos on youtube which renewed my interest in Vans career; I now own well over a dozen. They made me BUY more cds- youtube vids have allowed me to choose better and therefore get MORE of what I want- such as Vans music. Van Morrison please loosen up on the videos. ty

  • thanks for the reply...........couldn't agree more.

  • I would love it if some VAN authorities out there have any idea as to a follow-up story as to why or who made thia poorest of decisions as to remove all the great material from YOU TUBE, and if or when they will acquiesce and reverse the decision, to censor all the material that we enjoyed up until a month ago ? Any news or response would be hugely appreciated.

In order, personally, I rank his genius as Astral Weeks, Veedon Fleece, Moondance, St. Dominic's, Street Choir, Common One, Hard Nose

  • One last comment Mark, before I hit the hay. I presume you know and own Common One. Otherwise, buy it today ! Into that mystic.

    E. merz

  • Hi MarkGauvreau.

You do realise that just because Van Morrison was born on the Island of Ireland, that does not mean he is a Catholic, which I think you assume. Van is from the North, and he's from a Protestant background. Though to be fair, I think Van would be non-denominational in practice. I think his only religion would be God without the bureaucracy i.e. mysticism.

Furthermore, his song 'Coney Island' is actually about a little village on the County Down coastline (northeast Ireland).

  • Good points, but to me, as a Catholic, certain things are Catholic no matter who expresses them - the beauty of nature, the power of love, mysticism. Remember the Carmelites, who are Catholic mystics. Thanks for such thoughtful comments.

  • Talk about a quick reply(?). I agree with much of what you say, but I am Irish and an ex-Catholic (and that's Irish from Ireland not an emigrant). I don't think Catholicism

has any kind of monopoly on mysticism, and I don't feel very proud of the way they murdered people to advance their religion - as in the Inquisition.

Coney Island - used to stay their in the

1970's in my aunt's cottage. The song talks of the many villages in the area, like St. John's Point or Ardglass.

    Continued next

  • I don't think Catholicism has a monopoly either - but to me it represents the most complete vision of the whole truth, whereas other faiths are incomplete, even if they can have parts of the truth. Yes the Inquisition wa sbad - although there wasn't as much oppression as people think - but people are sinners, even Catholics.

  • You must be on line in real time. O.K. More to say about Coney Island. 'Ardglass in the jam jar' I think Van is talking here about sea food, as there were many fresh seafood takeaways in Ardglass at that time.

Locations mentioned in the song, are often not capitalised on google lyric searches.

Downpatrick, is a large town where Saint Patrick is buried, St. Johns Point, is a village, Strangford Lough is an inlet of water, and Shrigley, and Killyleagh are small towns.

  • Last word - Listen to Album 'Inarticulate Speech of the Heart', play September Night, and think of an Irish late summer in 1975

watching seals play in the Irish Sea at Coney Island beach, County Down.

  • I went to Ireland twice in the 1980s - the most beautiful place I've ever seen. The Dingle Penninsula, the Cliffs of Moher, the Blaskets. Spectacular.

  • Part 2. Not only does Van's 'Coney Island' actually capture for me the pure aesthetics of feeling of going to Coney Island on a late lazy August evening, "On and on, over the hill to Ardglass in the jamjar, autumn sunshine, magnificent and all shining through"

but the whole Album "Inarticulate Speech of the Heart" really captures the mood (especially of being young). The track 'September Night' reminds me of the blazing red sun going down over the sea in Coney Island beach.

  • That's beautiful. So many of his songs to that.

  • Dear Mark,

Nice thoughts on Van. I spent a year or two beating myself up about the Man not being appreciated fully, the way Dylan is now. But, if you think about it, it don't matter. the truth will out. He has blessed us with his magic and in the fullness of time many will join to thank him for the music. And as you know, Keep it Simple is only 2 weeks away. I count myself a Christian. more thoughts please. E. merz

  • BTW: Van plays 2 or 3 gigs a week and plays his own songs, who the feck needs a noob like u? He also has some really big talent covering his songs-Glen Hansard, Rod Stewart, James Morrison,

Make another vid covering someone else, who gives a shite.

  • Whoever you are, you've gone off the deep end!!! me posting copywritten work, what the hell are you talking about? If you are a musician why don't you have any other vids posted? you've only covered one song and that's the one Van(?) removed. Likely story!!!!

  • All when I play in front of the thousands of people per year and they request a Van Morrison song I will politly tell them.. I don't play Van Morrison songs.. He doesn't want me to!

    I agree... You don't need me Van!!! You're impressive enough all by yourself {{{cough cough}}}

    What a loser Old Man!

  • I have the feeling HollywoodRehab that you'll be doing Van a favor not singing his songs anymore. I doubt anyone would be looking for his originals after hearing you. Just a feeling..but if you any kind of life or talent you wouldn't have to spend your time posting hate messages on Youtube.

  • uh huh.. right..

  • you're missing the point there sparky.. Most musicians love when people play their stuff. But Van "The Little Douche Bag" Morrison doesn't want people to play his stuff! Thousands and thousands of people would never hear his stuff or be interested if others didn't cover his crap! So get real and quit posting copywritten work you idiot!

  • Van doesn't want us to play his stuff!

Van doesn't need us to keep his songs alive!

Van can do that all by himself.. I posted a Van "Loser" Morrison cover song on YouTube and in less than one day got a letter of how Van and his lil' cronnies say I infringed on his copyrights!

So to all musicinas... DON'T PLAY VAN MORRISON SONGS HE DOESN"T WANT YOU TOO!

  • So I ask all musicians that cover any Van Morrison songs to stop playing the 2 or 3 songs and replace them with an artist that has a clue about his fan base, his music and isn't a money hungry jerk!

  • Van and his cronnies have lost all touch with reality and his so called "Fans"! WAKE UP VAN. If we musicians didn't play your crappy songs on YouTube in clubs and coffee shops you wouldn't have people on YouTube or the Web or anyplace looking for you!

  • It's also pretty coincidental that this all just happened, around the timing of the re-issues of 8 (approx.) albums and his New album,......this is B.S., and Van, please re-assess your decision here. It is not like we can re-sell or 'profit' from YOUTUBE material. Release some more Video youself then VAN, or Live material from the 70's and 80's, instead of re-issuing 're-mastered' albums with only a smidgen of "unreleased so-called rarities" which amount to only one per album. BOGUS !

  • it's the same old argument that we, as true fans put forth, as in the Napster days: WE ALREADY OWN EVERYTHING that our certain Favorite artists have released. In this case Van, has chosen to only release one official DVD (Montreux) which of course is incredible, and I personally own every album, and about 10 additional boot leg CD's. Please,.just damn restore what existed here before. Makes me soo angry, and yes, my disdain for this poorly pulled move, does spill onto my thoughts of VAN!

  • jaqmart; even if Van didn't write BEG, & you are the 1 out of the entire population of the earth that knows the true story and you could prove it, what true Van Morrison fan would care? BEG is not his best song just his most popular and well known. GET LOST! GET A LIFE!

  • Can't we somehow organize an appropriate protest to this removal of all the great videos that were here? I dont know who to blame, Van/The record company, but I am pissed! Have enjoyed surfing the last 4 hours over Dylan, Keith Richards, Stones,Marley, Neil Young, Dead, and many many more musicians/bands. So: What Gives ? THis record company that's being blamed: well who else do they have under contract ? Are all those other artists banned from here? Something smells...RESTORE THE VAN !

  • Van Morrison has lost a lot of credibility by removing his videos from YouTube.

btw - Van did NOT write "Brown Eyed Girl" - you cannot be such a huge fan not knowing that basic fact.

  • Perhaps you should blame Universal Music Group, instead of Van.They've had quite a few user's videos removed.

  • Yeah I guess I may have jumped to conclusions - born out of frustration at not seeing those great videos any more.

    Thx for the heads up.

  • listen i love Van the man too and I am from Ireland. If van seen this he would probably tell you to shut up and stop talking shit and put your time and effort into writing and playing music instead of talking about it.

  • The Best Van Morrison songs are: See Me Through,Foreign Window, Streets of Arklow,Foggy Mountain Top,Somerset,In The Garden,Listen To The Lion,Rave On-John Donne,Summertime in England, Cleaning Windows,Orangefield, Bulbs,Caravan,Troubadours,Celtic New Year,Redwood Tree,Into The Mystic,Little Village,You Don't Pull No Punches-But You Don't Push The River, Cypress Avenue, Ancient Highway, When The Leaves Come Falling Down.

Van Morrison: Most Talented Singer/Songwriter. EVER!

    James Kent.

  • Awesome list but it's too short! I would add the entire albums Hymns to the Silence, a Night in San Francisco and What's Wrong with This Picture.

  • Just have to chime in! "Rough God Goes Riding", "Slim Slow Slider", and his incredible version of "She Moves Through the Fair" would have to be on my list (Which is also too short)!

  • Just stumbled on this one. Thank you Mr. Gauvreau, for NOT using "inarticulate speech of the heart" (Quote Mr. Morrison), but truly the opposite. Mr. Morrison is quite right to take off everything, since he has (as I have been informed by one of his Managers (Mr. Morrison, if you read this, do you remember Roy??) that he has control over his work and thank god he did that. (Eg look what happens to the Bang tapes...) Mr. Morrison, you achieve to make music holy!

  • His new album Keep it Simple is out in a couple weeks.

  • Thank you, have already preorderd 3 weeks ago ..:-)

  • why is all his music being taken off youtube?

  • Copyright violation.

  • just curiuos? but are all his videos, music and art let's say, owned by him?...his record label? In short...last month there were 2,000 postings and growing, within a week its 600and decreasing...do they own all his stuff? Thanks for the response, I had figured it was CPYRHGT infringe...big fan of VM for decades! Great poet.

  • Van has his own company, Exile Productions, and I assume he owns all the music. His a genius but known to be a grump also lol.

  • Thank you for this... I have always felt this way about Van, but I have never articulated it. I agree with the "Moondance" and "Brown Eyed Girl" being recognized by the public as his greatest hits... and yes, they were his greatest hits; yet they were not his greatest songs. I am glad someone else feels the same about Van!

  • Thank you!!

  • I`m with you Van Morrison is the only songwriter

today who can really put (not good songs) but

great music. He is not in the music business

for the money but for the art(VIVA VAN MORRISON)
