BioMod uses Shifter's 'secret weapon' placement so let's say it's even MORE worth looting the guy's body in those--Just be sure to free up some inventory space before diving in. There are also skill points to be had when you go for the goodies at the other end of the tunnel.
there's actually a dead guy somewhere on the buttom of the canals if I remember, some npc's are talking about him, can't remember that much about him though :P
You don't seem to use the grenade launcher on the assault rifle very much, I find it most effective way destroying turrets and such. Also shotgun is pretty much useless gun without Sabot rounds in it (well, not useless, but not so powerful either).
There is actually few other places on the canals, underwater tunnels and such, few items also. In the other side of the tunnel were you found the scientist, you can also have few items and skillpoints.

You keep saying you have "No sense of direction." Ironically, you have a compass augmentation on the left of your HUD.

It's worth going to the other end of the tunnel. There's a weapon mod and a couple of other things if I remember.
