Nice rendition of one of Buddy Holly's many songs. The Hollies were always a great group. It's too bad that those behind this performance obviously take the audience for fools by using unplugged instruments. (If wireless systems were used there would be plgs in the jacks of the those beautiful Fender Stratocasters and Jazz Bass.) Thanks nyrainbow4 for sharing. I still enjoyed it.
@hunkabuggy I agree. This is a great cover & it was recorded in 1980. Also, I want to amend my previous post. Bobby's lookin' good (prefer the hat to wigs).
@heymaryann1 Thanks for the info.Have been a Hollies fan all my life. I lived south of Manchester most of my life, now living in Florida and miss the music. I'm kind of wondering what else I have missed out on !
@hunkabuggy Were you around in the '60s? I would've loved to have lived near Manchester/Liverpool during that exciting time. I was a kid in the '60s, living in the US, so am just discovering that era. It was difficult being a Hollies fan here bec we didn't hear much about them, but they're worth the extra effort it took to follow them. They are THE BEST!!
@heymaryann1 Yes. Lucky enough to be in my teens at the time. 1967 was the best year and I was 16. Club life in and around Manch was great. 'Sgt Peppers' in Stockport was the best for psychodelia. (Opposite to 'Strawberry Studios') lots of good music came out of there. All the big groups voted for their favourite group -The Bands Band!! The Hollies took the title.Remember the fights too 'Mods versus Rockers' and great fashions.Wish I had a time machine!!
@hunkabuggy I am SO jealous, but thankful to have people that were there share their stories from that time. I remember hearing abt the bands, Carnaby St., Twiggy, Jean Shrimpton, & wishing I was older & in England. I finally got to see the Hollies in 1983 but Terry, my fav, was already gone. My sister & I were chosen to go backstage & met Bobby, Tony, & Graham. Bobby was so nice & funny! He sang Hey Mary Ann (instead of Carrie Anne) to me. It was surreal meeting them at last!!
@heymaryann1 That really was the best time to be a teenager. Couldn't wait to hear a new song from The Beatles,Hollies, DC5,Moody Blues, Had my ear stuck to a transistor radio every waking minute.and 'Pirate Radio' that was the best, (Search for 'Radio Caroline'). Then again I never went backstage and had my idols sing to me. THAT IS SPECIAL. I envy you.You might want to look up TOTP. Top of the Pops on BBC. Thurs at 7:30. couldn't go out till that finished. I could go on and on...and on!
Hi just to clarify. The Beatles probably sold more in volume but the Hollies had more hits. When you actually look at it from a practical sense - the Beatles were only actually together for a few years as a group.
The Hollies actually had more hits than the Beatles and they are still going. This song was just a one off for them. They were mega successful - much more so than the Eagles and most other bands that were going at that time. where you been?
Listen to some of the interviews and read the Guiness Book of Records. There are a couple of interviews on youtube where this is stated. In fact, this was one of the Hollies biggest claims to fame. Hope this is helpful to you. Have a great day.
Hi again - just to clarify. The Beatles probably sold more in volume but the hollies had more actual hits. When you look at it from a practical sense, the Beatles were only together as a group for a few years and most of their hits were made in the first couple of years whereas the Hollies went on for years making hits.
This was pretty much Terry Sylvester's swan song with the Hollies. The bad blood that was evident at the induction into the RRHOF was already beginning about this time. Surprised though, that Allan Clarke would be so down on Sylvester - he was a loyal chap who stayed in the band longer than Clarke's bro Nash - and consider the shabby treatment given to Sylvester's replacement Alan Coates. Not too classy on the part of Hicks and Clarke.
@rockon1898 Shortly before the induction I heard Terry on the radio praising Allan as the greatest pop singer of all time (I agree) & he regarded Allan & Nash as friends. He had gone to a Nash concert, they spoke of singing at the RRHOF so Nash knew his feelings. I bet Terry felt blindsided at their snubbing. Is this a pattern with some Hollies to past members? Terry has many long-lasting friendships with others in the music industry so what's the deal? I read AC is bitter bec he can't sing.
the holliespara sempre estará na memória de todo bom apreciador da boa música,além de ter o melhor interprete de todos os tempos,Allan Clark, pra sempre vc estará no hall of fame do rock roll
This song is so beautiful but it makes me sad that it was probably the last video with Terry [my fav] and Bernie. This lineup was the best and made so many of us happy throughout the years!! Thanks to Terry and Bernie for all their contributions to the Hollies.
love this!!! I've been trying to remember who sang this in the 70's but I think I like this even better!Anybody remember ?I like that saxaphone too. And what a good-looking band! wooh.
Buddy should be so proud of guys: The Hollies. I played this song with my bands in the Buddy Holly Version for a long time I will get my current bands to play this Version with me as a great tribute to one the Rock'n Roll Heros ever...... Buddy we still love you, Manni
when i was on an internship in the uk in 1999, radio 2 would often play this in the mornings on my way to work,,,always looked forward to hearing it...
yes sir, i agree, this song is really AMAZING, but in our country (philippines) this song was popularized by the Herman Hemits, try listening it, an excellent interpretation, i don't know who wrote originally this song, will someone please tell me, thanks
The original version was by Buddy Holly. The song was cowritten by Norman Petty (Buddy's producer) and Bob Montgomery (the other half of the duo "Buddy and Bob"). Buddy's recording is my favourite version of the song, although the Hollies' is the second best.
One of the best of Buddy Hollie's,but I can't get his version out of my head. This is well played, original tempo, but leaves a saccharin taste that's unbearable,in this style for this song. I don't believe it's their fault, somethings going on.
@coverman: I know what you mean. Since their last huge mega-hit was a slow-paced love ballad (Air That I Breathe), and subsequent singles in other veins failed to chart, they must have thought the public only wanted to hear slow ballads from them, 'cause they recorded entirely too many of them in the late '70s! Seek out the Knack's version of Heartbeat--now THAT'S the right way to cover Buddy Holly!
roots66,thanks for the call.I'm an outsider looking in.BazCanada88 and especially Angie4josh carry a certain amount of conviction in their comments.Makes me think they know something we don't ,like the reasons why.
No doubt I will get a few "thumbs down" for this comment. I love, LOVE The Hollies. I adore their music and their talent. However, IF they had a better management, I think by 1980, they would have been cranking out AMAZING tunes, comparable to the Eagles, rather then re-hashed love ballads. Mind you, this version is nice, BUT as I mentioned above, they could have been releasing hits, if they had a manager who was with the times. What wonderful talents, sadly not being shown their full potential.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This song was popularized by the Herman's Hermits. However, I'm glad the Hollies did not record this song in the early 60s. The voicing, the symphony, the rhythm and arrangement of this song by the Hollies will make the HH version sound like a good bunch'o'boys Sunday Choir.
thank you but im well aware that Buddy Holly had the biggest hit with this song .!!! thanx for your comment .. I was replying to another coment ....Lyndloo..

Oh yes, Lyndloo; Allan definately winked at you (or was it me?) I think Tony's being naughty at 0:34 and 2:00 too; such a cheeky smile...very cute! Something was going on and they're all having a fun time. Adorable! Pittery-Pat!
I swear "ALLAN" just winked at me at 0.26 it sent shivers down my backbone oooo!!! I'm winking right back at cha !I gotta keep replaying this! love it !thanx for posting this great clip..Lyndloo..
i love the hollies but they looked horrible in this video, between tony's overalls and bern calvert as a whole, they just looked bad compared to what they once did
I disagree, its in 1980 so time is the only difference that seperates this band from its earlier version.I believe the boys aged gracefully and really had no one to impress as they were loved by millions.God bless the HOLLIES!!!
Forgive Tony the overalls, they were big in the 70s. He still looks good in this clip in spite of them, lol. But I agree there is better footage of the Hollies when they were in their prime. Unfortunately, time marches on (for all of us!).
@bcrfan21 I agree the others look subpar, but Terry is his usual handsome self. I absolutely love his haircut & fringed jacket. He was the coolest dresser.
This is lovely. Beautiful Allan still makes my heart miss a beat....adorable as ever (my first crush!). I've been a loyal fan for 44 years but I hadn't heard this. Thanks for the special treat!
OMG! I love this !! its great to see these guys again especially" ALLAN " what a lovely version of this "great" song !! thank you I have another one to add to my fav list!oh so nice! thanx for sharing ...Lyndloo..

Oh yes, Lyndloo; Allan definately winked at you (or was it me?) I think Tony's being naughty at 0:34 and 2:00 too; such a cheeky smile...very cute! Something was going on and they're all having a fun time. Adorable! Pittery-Pat!

This is by far the best version of "Heartbeat." Any song Allan sings turns to magic.

Tony can wear WHATEVER he darn well pleases cause he looks in EVERYTHING! If Tony's wearing it, I LOVE IT! Heck, he'd even look good naked! ; )

i love the hollies but they looked horrible in this video, between tony's overalls and bern calvert as a whole, they just looked bad compared to what they once did

The beautiful, stunning, awesome Allan Clarke never looked horrible in his life...NOT possible..bite your tongue!

@chakahfatah That can't be said about Terry. He looks absolutely gorgeous here. Alan looks way older than his voice sounds.

@bcrfan21 I agree the others look subpar, but Terry is his usual handsome self. I absolutely love his haircut & fringed jacket. He was the coolest dresser.
