  • What a inspiration ! That is not played from "piece of paper" ...like boring symphonic music is sometimes ;) ....that is played " from inside" GREAT GREAT GREAT

  • the vocal modifier is a sampler

  • Are there really people who DON'T like this piece of music?! Damn! This is amazing stuff!

  • This is GREAT!

I say: "a moustash for everyone!"

  • where can we get this DVD?!!?!?!? =) amazing music!

  • Trilok is one of those cats who will never be duplicated or imitated. A once in a lifetime rhythm god. Caught him live a couple of times and, man, it's just nuts.

  • wow. incredible. i discovered something new today. thanks!

  • :!!!!!!!!! best KORGIAMI ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Joe Zawinul invented long ago what is today called Future Jazz

  • Trilok Gurtu is ridiculously amazing

  • Гета Нєчта_!

  • I like Joe Zawinul. He was a very good musician. In fact I`m Austrian too. Somehow we were neighbours. Thanks for uploading that video.Excelent.

  • I know Gurtu from "Peace of the Five Elements." This must be Zawinul after Weather Report(?)

  • gr8 musicians! \m/

  • drum stools are optional!

  • Génial...My God !!! , damn ....It's good...Gods ! they bring you a constant tension, I love it!

    From France....

  • i really dont like the whole track but that intro stunnes me! sry just my opinion :P

  • Joe w/ Weather Report, did some of sounds you hear in this video. So funky...love it!

  • zawinul eterno

  • A Zawinul admirer who misses his brilliance on our planet. This performance was spectacular. All that from two humans.

  • this is just how music should sound, hehe...:)

  • Joe - Trilok.. those names will be legendary in no time.. thank you for posting this vid!!

  • i fucking love this so much.

Does anyone have anymore artists they can reccomend me that share this simliar style?

I've been extremely hooked on music a la Jan Hammer with that sort of "jazz" vibe to it. Just came across this. Simply amazing.

  • Rip Joe......This is realy great,thnks.

  • Gurtu's such an inspiring drummer! There are some excellent You Tube videos of him and I especially like the one which shows him giving a tabla lesson to a bunch fo people.

  • Sounds like Uzaki Ryudo's films' sound! hehe..

  • Ye ye...

  • What human being in his 70's (living on planet earth) has ever been as cool and ahead of the curve as joe zawinul? he was truly a miracle, a mozart, an actual genuine article genius. my goodness!!!

  • @soldbythepound

    Too true

  • @soldbythepound: Indeed! Never was a truer word spoken.

  • where can I find this recording, what's the name of the CD?? it is amaizing

  • @jljsuk

  • he is like a good in his castle with all his synths. just amazing

  • the drum throne is just an option !!!

  • gurtu grooves like hell ! WOW

  • @digimaton Trilok is the best drumer/percussionist mix ever!!!!!

  • whos playin the drums :P

  • I just came home from watching a concert with Trilok Gurtu and the Jan Garbarek Group. Most amazing concert in human history!

  • hey, i really like fusion, but this is an odd question...I'm looking for a type of music that is very heavy with the vocals. Lots of mesmerizing chants, middle eastern style stuff. I youtubed some stuff that sounded to slow and peaceful. I really just want the heavy emotional vocals, and preferably traditional middle eastern instrumentation. can someone point me in the right direction?

  • @pentacleofvenus Try Nguyen Le + Karim Ziad "Ifrikya" or Nguyen Le + Dhafer Youssef "Homescape". Most drummer and bassist played with Joe also played with Nguyen e.g. Trilok Gurtu, Karim Ziad, Linley Marthe...

  • whooooooop!

  • This is incredible !!!!!

Jesus saves and save the Zawi Trilok !!!!!!

  • Lapiz de plomo ?

  • You guys need to relax, man. take a joke; kick back and relax !!!

i marched drum corps taught by tom float, ralph hardimon and glen crosby. i was in

jazz, and wind ensemble for 4 years in high school...i know what percussion is...

...you see that is the real trick, people think travis and lars ar the BEST DRUMMERS in the world...and i need to CORRECT THEM !!!!!!!!!!!

  • I cant believe you guys didn't get the joke...hahahaha if you read the bottom of the comment, it says it is signed by .... Lt. Frank Drebin........you know, police squad/naked gun...it plays on the opposite of everything...

...how in the world would i even know who: buddy rich, trilok gurtu, vinnie calhouta, dave weckl, tom float, tony williams dennis chambers, steve gadd stuart copeland billy cobham etc were if i only liked lars and travis

  • This brings the keyboard into the 21fst century!!!!

  • @jackhammer10101 Yeah, Jackhammer, you are right on. Joe should have chosen Ringo to play drums in this piece. Then they could have called it somethin' like the Ringo Octopuses' Garden Express. You may want to stick with the Trav Barker vids until you evolve a little further in your appreciation for actual creativity. Barker looks (and sounds) more like he is driving nails than drumming.

  • @jackhammer10101 are you fuckng kidding me, travis is pretty good, lars is alright, but all those drummers you named can do lars shit one handed and one footed. you should look up benny greb if you want a real good drummer. I hope you were kidding about the comment, or you should never say, play, or even look at any percussion instruments ever again

  • crazy nice ! ですね.

  • does anyone know what kind of vocal modifier thing-ma-jig he's using? It's awesome... some analog moog synth perhaps?

  • @jtromsness it's a vocoder.

  • @jtromsness due to the fact that joe endorsed KORG at that time i guess its a KORG DVP1 voiveprocessor which modulates the harmonys played on the keyboard

  • the king JOe never forget u!!!!

  • Just 2 musicians can make music with such depth and breadth. Well, not just musicians; they're exceptionally talented musicians. The way they are interlocking with each other is awe-inspiring.

  • @1950jimbei This is pretty awe-inspiring yes, two musicians true, but I believe there is a pedal on infinite repeat playing a two-second repeat track or something to that effect.

  • @jeffcowhick So what?

  • @1950jimbei You sayd 2 musicians can do so much. So I say that it's almost like having a third musician with that repeated loop track. That's all. I love these guys, I'm not looking down on them.

  • @jeffcowhick

Good. I hope you'll also appreciate another great collabo of 2 supreme musicians: Richard Tee & Steve Gadd - Take The A Train, which you can find on YouTube.

  • Trilok....ok! thanx so much

  • so good!!!! I can't imagine what it would sound like if Jaco was there....

  • világi dzsanázás! Szétszaggatom magamon az inget ha meghallom!! Zawinulban benne volt a dzsukel,,, Isten áldjon meg bátya!

  • Could you translate it, please?

  • wicked sounds

  • you suck mindless pleb

  • Comment removed

  • Zawinul & Gurtu are amazing!

  • sweet

  • is there an album w/ this on it? Trilok is amazing. His music is some of the best. I recommend him to everyone in the world.

  • percussions and drums really goes together!!

trilok is one of the best with gadd and cobham!!

  • This is what i call the extra power plus feeling of drum !!!

When i heard this sound for the first time, i was smashed like a ball served by roddick !!!

    i love this drummer !!!!

  • thats a really groove!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great.

  • I've listened to this so many times I've lost count. Trilok's playing is intense - man! Thanks digimaton.

    Larry, Taiwan

  • While listening to these great musicians play I felt nothing but brotherly love flowing through me! What a wonderful piece. Amen

  • Mama mia, that's great, tha'ts great !!!

  • Un lungo affascinante viaggio ...

  • That's not fair! Bitch Britney should be alive and BIG JOE daed? absolutely unfair!!!

  • trilok is greatest percussionist ever born on earth, salute your music trilok, what a music wow

  • nice snare sound!

  • Masters of our generation. Thank you

  • eterno bambino prodigio......l

    i love....

  • ☼☼☼☼☼

  • define "more progressive." weather report "i sing the body electric." more adventurous harmonically and rhythmically than this piece. the first two weather report recordings were very ahead of their time as a blend of jazz, funk, rock, improvisation and modern classical influences. it's also really fun to listen to. weather report "live in tokyo." absurdly good.

  • songs like this one, and more groovy stuff. i dont like the mellow jazz at all, there has to be a groove that makes me...well groove to the vibe:)

  • none of the stuff i'm talking could be called "mellow" by any stretch of the imagination. on the other hand, most of it doesn't groove like this. this is a fusion groove which isn't as "progressive" as weather report's early music in my use of the word. i'm not saying it isn't good. it's just not that adventurous rhythmically or harmonically. the word "progressive" for me doesn't describe this piece but i guess it's subjective. if you're looking for grooves, zawinul's later music.

  • Thanks Ill search for Zawinuls later stuff.

As for mellow music, I consider Weather Report somehow mellow, but than again Ive been and still am listening to progressive death metal badns such as Meshuggah, Opeth, Aghora...thats why most jazz to me is mellow sounding:)

    Cheers

  • that's clears it up. if you're listening to death metal, you might want to check out mahavishnu orchestra. that shit is not mellow but it still ain't death metal. unfortunately most of zawinul's recorded stuff is on the polite side. he had a lot more fire in the live playing.

  • dude, i posted a mahavishnu orchestra vid to my page as a favorite. check it out.

  • can anyone recomend me some Zawinul that is more progressive orientated? Thanks ;)

  • Amazing. 2 giants throwing down.....

  • .The beat is like the running of the train journey If you listen to the entire band on the zawinul's 75 th album ,you can hear the speeding up ,slowing down ,stopping of the train. When it reaches Istanbul you can hear that the song brings you into an eastern atmosphere

  • Needs a hoo-hoot, train whistle blowin' or to dovetail into Hendrix's...Hear My Train a Comin'

I love the modified shuffle...classic 'train tracks'.

    Beautiful.

  • IPNOTICI

  • Jazz Supernova ! !

  • no offense but can someone explain why it's "orient" express?

  • The Orient Express is the name of a long-distance passenger train that runs from Paris to Istanbul

  • It's a long train route through Europe.

  • es una pistola , al igual q joe zawinul !!!! supreme geniality

  • just read about trilok gurtu in drummer magazine, was intrigued by his style so had to check it out. he is awesome!

  • I am in a trance, Now I go to part two to hear More--Just getting started at 5:16, Did you ever try to keep the beat like this? Not an easy task. Always looks easy until you try it. I am tired watching these guys, they get their energy from that Beat. Would be nice to be there in live concert.

  • What a show. Keyboard Master & Percussion Master, together. I am especialy enjoing his percussion rig, & his "toys", I am finaly seeing.& feeling---smokin hot..Bravo!

    JP

  • joe kicks a lot of bass players ass

  • Incredible. SO, good.

  • wicked!

  • Another pure gem. Two of my favourites. I was happy to hear Trilok live 15 yr ago with T.Rypdal and M.Vitous. I wish i had attended a Zawinul concert too...

  • I had tickets to see Joe Zawinul with the bbc big band but sadly he passed away before I got a chance to see him.

  • did you get your money back?

  • No, but they held a memorial concert with Jango Baites filling in the keys.

  • lol very interesting first question

  • Thanks Joe, peace to you and everyone. Thanks.

  • trilok is the man.......

  • he doesnt use a kick drum...its a tom, I dont understand how he tunes it to make it sound like a tight base drum though

  • i think he's using a trigger for that tom

  • no triggering used, it's the way he mics the heads. The percussion instrument he uses to get the tom sounds is basically just a wooden panel with holes in it for the drum heads, it has a very dead sound, very little resonance, it's the amplification and a bit of eq that gives him that sound.

  • @digimaton It's actually a set of Melanie Phantom drums.... they're kind of like rototoms, but mounted in a steel plate. I have some myself and they sound great !

  • Joe Zawinul I Love You. You`re in Heaven Now, with all the Gods of Music!!

  • he does not need to sit down to play and you dont need to ask either!@!@!just listen and appreciate, dont questions things like that,,,,just appreciate this art man.....!!!!

  • IS that the late Carlos Vega on drums???

  • Trilok Gurtu

  • Thanks

  • isse sentent plus les mecs, nous non plus, c'est trolpied...

  • does anyone know from which record this track is?? thanx

  • The studio recording is on My People. It's on my wish list. :)

  • gurtu is a legend got his sticks

  • why doesn't he have chair to sit on lol :S? hahh

  • Indian percussionists tend to sit cross-legged on the floor. How he translated that into playing kit drums including kick on the floor is amazing and mind-boggling :D

  • because he play tabla drums also... i have seen it on live. Its incredible... amazing. His touch is perfect

  • Oh my god... Where is this from? It's wonderful!

  • Masters 'at work'. Thank You for vid.

  • 2:21-3:05- 220 volt spine vibrations

  • A world groove sizzler. Pullin' it off like no tomorrow.

  • How is call the system he used when he plays and sings at the same time?,

  • It sounds like a vocoder

  • Yes, it's vocoding that produces this effect.

  • Talk about being "Lost in the world of Funk and Fusion".

One of the best things I have ever heard !!!!!

  • Was this and part 2 the only songs from this concert that is available in video? I would love to see the entire concert. Joe and Trilok are absolutely perfect together.

  • TRILOK IS OFF THE HOOK!!!!!

  • simply awesome!!!

  • I knew both joe zawinul and triluk gurtu are amazing musicians. I recently heard that joe zawinul died a while ago. He is a legend.

Triluk Gurtu is truly amazing . I never so them together this is brilliant. I watched it 50 times or so the past view weeks. Amazing

  • wow its awsome how he switches fast to play the bass with his hand very fast =)

  • Просто Опкакаться можно!

  • Joe will never die, in a way He will remain forever, because music wouldn't be what it is today without this genius, and even what it will be tomorrow depends in part of his contribution.

  • OK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Tight playing and a fearsome groove. A+

  • Pitty Jaco isn't there anymore to groove.

Pitty Zawinul isn't here anymore neither...

I think the world mourned the day great men like him depart. Zawinul with pastorius where unreplacable on the field of music!

  • Joe Zawinul was just a genius. Much missed.

  • right. Rest in Peace Joe!

  • ? I was talking about stars.. 5/5 stars.. hehe.. lol

  • this is SO 5/5

  • what's a 1/5th note? : /

  • believe it or not there is such a thing, in theory, some composers think in this way, it's using the logic of 5 in the time of four.

5/5 could translate to 5 1/4 notes in the time of 4/4. I suppose it's a way of nesting modulations within a fixed temporal framework, if I understand it correctly. Another approach would be to notate [5:4] over a bar in 4/4.

  • Awesome piece of music !

  • very powerful groove

  • everytime I hear this it's amazing.

    that rythm...........

    RIP Joe, you're the best

  • what a talented man ,all the life God gave to him,and he ripped the keys up

  • everytime I hear this it's amazing.

    that rythm...........

    RIP Joe, you're the best

  • awesome

  • Impressive what two great artists make these. My joy does not have end!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I see and hear trilok Gurtu sommer 06 in the hofgarden from Düsseldorf; that was a freee Concert + very relaxt the KOmmunikation + sound: but only 40 minuts: fulminant; I never think I see trilok Ägurtu life in Germany... :))

  • Nice going rhythm :-)

  • I really wish there was an exception to these great musicians concerning death

  • So, so true ! Joe was too precious to die...

  • To anandanaga999: Elevator music? Everyone is entitled to an opinion - but to a point! Man, if you don't hear melody played and implied throughout this piece, that's one thing, and I feel bad for you, as you are missing out on some beautiful music here; but the last thing you should be doing is posting ignorant and insulting comments, especially if they have nothing to do with reality...now go back to your elevator...

  • R.I.P Joe

  • this is sooo amazing

    see ya in heaven joe!!!

  • this coming from a man who worships feet.

  • lol

  • You just do not hear it

  • silly boy

  • tell me where this elevator is!! Some kind of super elevator with really hip operators who play Joe!! if only man if only. your a joke.

  • You're the joke. Ha ha
