What a inspiration ! That is not played from "piece of paper" ...like boring symphonic music is sometimes ;) ....that is played " from inside" GREAT GREAT GREAT
Trilok is one of those cats who will never be duplicated or imitated. A once in a lifetime rhythm god. Caught him live a couple of times and, man, it's just nuts.
Gurtu's such an inspiring drummer! There are some excellent You Tube videos of him and I especially like the one which shows him giving a tabla lesson to a bunch fo people.
What human being in his 70's (living on planet earth) has ever been as cool and ahead of the curve as joe zawinul? he was truly a miracle, a mozart, an actual genuine article genius. my goodness!!!
hey, i really like fusion, but this is an odd question...I'm looking for a type of music that is very heavy with the vocals. Lots of mesmerizing chants, middle eastern style stuff. I youtubed some stuff that sounded to slow and peaceful. I really just want the heavy emotional vocals, and preferably traditional middle eastern instrumentation. can someone point me in the right direction?
@pentacleofvenus Try Nguyen Le + Karim Ziad "Ifrikya" or Nguyen Le + Dhafer Youssef "Homescape". Most drummer and bassist played with Joe also played with Nguyen e.g. Trilok Gurtu, Karim Ziad, Linley Marthe...
I cant believe you guys didn't get the joke...hahahaha if you read the bottom of the comment, it says it is signed by .... Lt. Frank Drebin........you know, police squad/naked gun...it plays on the opposite of everything...
...how in the world would i even know who: buddy rich, trilok gurtu, vinnie calhouta, dave weckl, tom float, tony williams dennis chambers, steve gadd stuart copeland billy cobham etc were if i only liked lars and travis
@jackhammer10101 Yeah, Jackhammer, you are right on. Joe should have chosen Ringo to play drums in this piece. Then they could have called it somethin' like the Ringo Octopuses' Garden Express. You may want to stick with the Trav Barker vids until you evolve a little further in your appreciation for actual creativity. Barker looks (and sounds) more like he is driving nails than drumming.
@jackhammer10101 are you fuckng kidding me, travis is pretty good, lars is alright, but all those drummers you named can do lars shit one handed and one footed. you should look up benny greb if you want a real good drummer. I hope you were kidding about the comment, or you should never say, play, or even look at any percussion instruments ever again
@jtromsness due to the fact that joe endorsed KORG at that time i guess its a KORG DVP1 voiveprocessor which modulates the harmonys played on the keyboard
Just 2 musicians can make music with such depth and breadth. Well, not just musicians; they're exceptionally talented musicians. The way they are interlocking with each other is awe-inspiring.
@1950jimbei This is pretty awe-inspiring yes, two musicians true, but I believe there is a pedal on infinite repeat playing a two-second repeat track or something to that effect.
@1950jimbei You sayd 2 musicians can do so much. So I say that it's almost like having a third musician with that repeated loop track. That's all. I love these guys, I'm not looking down on them.
Good. I hope you'll also appreciate another great collabo of 2 supreme musicians: Richard Tee & Steve Gadd - Take The A Train, which you can find on YouTube.
define "more progressive." weather report "i sing the body electric." more adventurous harmonically and rhythmically than this piece. the first two weather report recordings were very ahead of their time as a blend of jazz, funk, rock, improvisation and modern classical influences. it's also really fun to listen to. weather report "live in tokyo." absurdly good.
none of the stuff i'm talking could be called "mellow" by any stretch of the imagination. on the other hand, most of it doesn't groove like this. this is a fusion groove which isn't as "progressive" as weather report's early music in my use of the word. i'm not saying it isn't good. it's just not that adventurous rhythmically or harmonically. the word "progressive" for me doesn't describe this piece but i guess it's subjective. if you're looking for grooves, zawinul's later music.

What a show. Keyboard Master & Percussion Master, together. I am especialy enjoing his percussion rig, & his "toys", I am finaly seeing.& feeling---smokin hot..Bravo!
Another pure gem. Two of my favourites. I was happy to hear Trilok live 15 yr ago with T.Rypdal and M.Vitous. I wish i had attended a Zawinul concert too...
no triggering used, it's the way he mics the heads. The percussion instrument he uses to get the tom sounds is basically just a wooden panel with holes in it for the drum heads, it has a very dead sound, very little resonance, it's the amplification and a bit of eq that gives him that sound.
@digimaton It's actually a set of Melanie Phantom drums.... they're kind of like rototoms, but mounted in a steel plate. I have some myself and they sound great !
he does not need to sit down to play and you dont need to ask either!@!@!just listen and appreciate, dont questions things like that,,,,just appreciate this art man.....!!!!
Indian percussionists tend to sit cross-legged on the floor. How he translated that into playing kit drums including kick on the floor is amazing and mind-boggling :D
Was this and part 2 the only songs from this concert that is available in video? I would love to see the entire concert. Joe and Trilok are absolutely perfect together.
Joe will never die, in a way He will remain forever, because music wouldn't be what it is today without this genius, and even what it will be tomorrow depends in part of his contribution.
believe it or not there is such a thing, in theory, some composers think in this way, it's using the logic of 5 in the time of four.
5/5 could translate to 5 1/4 notes in the time of 4/4. I suppose it's a way of nesting modulations within a fixed temporal framework, if I understand it correctly. Another approach would be to notate [5:4] over a bar in 4/4.
I see and hear trilok Gurtu sommer 06 in the hofgarden from Düsseldorf; that was a freee Concert + very relaxt the KOmmunikation + sound: but only 40 minuts: fulminant; I never think I see trilok Ägurtu life in Germany... :))

This comment has received too many negative votesshow
why do I feel like I'm on a holding pattern..circling over the airport.
My advice..for what it's worth. Take scacred Bhajans find within them the melody. Grooves are just elevator music. Hearts beat with melody or did we forget?

To anandanaga999: Elevator music? Everyone is entitled to an opinion - but to a point! Man, if you don't hear melody played and implied throughout this piece, that's one thing, and I feel bad for you, as you are missing out on some beautiful music here; but the last thing you should be doing is posting ignorant and insulting comments, especially if they have nothing to do with reality...now go back to your elevator...

This comment has received too many negative votes show
why do I feel like I'm on a holding pattern..circling over the airport.
My advice..for what it's worth. Take scacred Bhajans find within them the melody. Grooves are just elevator music. Hearts beat with melody or did we forget?
