  • the mirror sqeeked...lol

  • What a beautiful chorus!!!!

  • is that Bob Geldof on guitar?

  • @martinrosskerr ... no, it's Dominic Miller. Just as gifted a guitar player as Vinnie Colaiuta is on drums!

  • 4:00 Orc peons love Sting xD

  • Why is seven days in 5/8 ? Should have been 7/8! ;-)

  • This was one of my late-husband's favorite songs, and musicians. Takes one back... thank you.

  • This song indicates, that Sting is a musical genius!

  • i still love this. such a clever tune

  • Vinnie Colaiuta is a beast

  • top tune by sting

  • I wish all the Sting's songs would have been remastered in a Police mode with Copeland and Summers.

  • Awesome song ...always mode s me up : )

  • good drummer

  • ACE TUNE,,

  • it's a big enough umbrella..............

  • @stingraybayouboy

....but it's always me who ends up getting wet!

  • I LOVE Sting

  • I loved this album when i was 17. Classic

  • You gotta love any tune this brilliant in 5/4 time :)

  • @misteranonymousguy There's just something right about 5/4, isn't there? I've liked it since I was a kid listening to the original "Mission Impossible".

  • yep she my girl now

  • This is fantastic!

  • hey guys, check out my drum cover of seven days posted above in the video response box! i transcribed vinnies drum part note for note, including the ending fills!! please leave me a comment and let me know what you think.

  • Sting, Vinny, and Dominic...They are just an awesome trio. I play all 3 of their instruments, so I understand what true masters that they are. I never seem to get tired of listening to them...

  • what about 7/4?

  • 5/4 yuh nit wits.... doesnt matter the tempo the quater note is getting the beat

  • how can you dislike this...

  • haha, look at colaiuta's disappointed face, when he misses the one on his snare in the very end!! 4:33

  • Too fast for a 5/4.

    It's 5/8: 3 quavers down, 2 quavers up.

  • it's can actually be both: two measures of 5/8 equal to one of 5/4. if you follow the accent of the hi hat you can count it as 5/4. in the chorus you can hear the 5/4 a lot better. think of 5/8 as the double time of 5/4. (1)12(2)34(3)51(4)23(5)45:] EXPLANATION: in parenthesis is what you tap(quarters). outside the parenthesis is what you count out loud(eighth notes, what you are counting).

  • @thrabash I'm a drummer, so i know about rhythm. the drum accents and the way he approached it, makes it 5/4. when i was a beginner(i'm not professional either) i played this song in 5/8 because i wasn't aware of the accents. 5/4 also equals exactly to 10/8(5/8 plus 5/8), 20/16, 40/32 or 80/64.

  • @juanbarros88 Good answer, but I think we can only imagine what's the right pulse. Could be either five quarters or five quavers... or even dottedquaver+dottedquaver+quarter (counting semiquavers: 1231231234-1231231234...)

  • Sadly this video is staged, it doesn't follow the actual music

  • Its a 5/4 plebs.

  • It's 5/4 ... 20 years later I realize what a fun piece it is.

  • I believe the time signature is very fast 5/4. If you count it out the rim shots are on the 4 beat of every measure and the singing mostly starts on the down beat.

  • no, it's 5/4 around 90-95 bpm. follow the main hi hat accents in the main groove., those accents are the quarter notes, the pulse. I'm a drummer and I have played this song a lot, so i really know what's going on. it an easy song but great. sorry if i sound arrongant.

  • Archenemy of Rebecca Black

  • the drum are always my fav

  • Well, didn't find it "ironic" that the tune is in 5 but did find it interesting. Guess there would have to be more of a connection between 5 and 7 for there to be irony but hey, that's me. Great tune, great playing. Gee, what else is new . . .;-)

  • I got Ten Summoner's Tales a couple years ago. Can someone tell what DVD this is from? I didn't know that recorded the making of each song from the album for film. I saw Dominic Miller a couple years ago jamming with Will Calhoun from Living Colour on a program about studio musicians that jam together on BET J. God bless these great musicians. Makes me proud to be a musician

  • FFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

  • Always thought it was strange to create this massive live recording set-up (the video has a whole set) , only have it mimed. There's too many moments where the playing and sound just don't match up. 1:05 for example.

  • @tobaccogiant23 Vinnie's not miming, he's playing his instrument, you can see he hits the drums and cymbals.

  • @PoeticJustice05 Sorry PJ, but wrong, this is the band playing (quite accurately) to the album version. Too many fills and hi-hat flourishes do not sync up. Look again at the break at 1.05, he plays across the toms, we hear cymbal and snare hit. Vinnie's my hero drummer, but Sting (or his producers) have a tendency to intersperse these kind of recordings with mimed performances. Other tracks off this set are live, and you can really tell the difference. This is just lifted from the album.

  • @tobaccogiant23 I know this, I'm not blind or deaf. I just said he's playing his instrument. I know he's not playing everything note for note like on the album. He probably didn't remember all the fills and patterns he did, so some things in the vid are different.

  • @PoeticJustice05 Ok, no offence intended... but you did say he wasn't miming. Anyway, great drummer, great song, let's be friends :-) TG

  • @tobaccogiant23 Indeed. Anybody who's a fan of Vinnie is a friend of mine.

  • 37 people don't know what good music is.

  • I had the pleasure of meeting Vinnie and watching him play at a clinic in 85'. I was freaking blown away by his playing. He was also very nice and approachable. Good for him on all his success.

  • najlepsza wersja :)

  • sorry the tempo is too fast to have this song in5/4. it's written in 5/8. Nobody cares anyway...

    bernie

  • ya it sucks whoever produced this video didn't edit in the right drum hits. however vinnie probably improvised this part in the studio, and doesn't neccasarily remember the specific hits off the record. in live vids of this song, his parts are always way different.

if you wanna see the studio drum parts the way it sounds on the record check out the JEFF GORDON DRUM COVER of seven days that was posted as a response to this vid.

  • why is everyone looking so far into this song, he can't count, get over it?

  • The drumming is not the same on the sound an image... But still, this is a masterpiece...

  • "We won't be playing scrabble for her hand I fear. I need that beer"

The most relevant lyrics for me at the moment.

  • do i have to tell the sory of a thusent rany days?

  • But not in me, the mighty flea.

  • monsters

  • masterpiece

  • ride that groove vinnie!

  • Love this song. so many great memories! keep it up sting!

  • <3<3<3

  • Did anyone notice Sting's mic positions changing? ha! Now you'll have to watch it again!

Vinnie and Dominic are the epitomy of the word "musicians".

  • haha ive read your comment before watching the video & yes your right :)

  • @sintrade lol that's really weird

  • @sintrade Yes! I never paid attention to it until you had pointed that - funny. Well, seven days - shots taken from Monday till Sunday ;) (IQ is no problem here)

  • @sintrade Yes! I didn't notice it before you had pointed that. Well - seven days - numerous shots from Monday till Sunday ;) (IQ is no problem here...) I tried to follow other details, but didn't catch anything else.

  • This is pure genius...but that's been said about Sting so many times that I lose count!

  • I just love the piece from 2:56 through 2:30.

  • how can you dislike this song?

  • this song flows like a lax bro's hair mid season

  • vinnie colaiuta is a great drummer!

  • Comment removed

  • i love this drummer 1 of my favs

  • To me, this song is almost perfect, from a musician's standpoint. So subtle, yet quietly in your face when it needs to be. Wow. Vinnie is truly amazing... as are all others in this video... but yeah... Vinnie is the MAN! :)

  • who said you can't do a pop song in 5/8

  • @TheNuncFluens this isn't pop though. it's funk, or soul. its not something justin biebers shrugs off you know

  • vinnie!! the man.

  • Wow! This song is...AWESOME!!!

  • a viña 2011 grande STING

  • Not bad for a Harkonen!!

  • Sting can't decide on which mic angle he prefers.

  • one of the best songs ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Why is cookie monster randomly in the song at 3:52?

  • @littha I went back to 3:52 but couldnt find coookie?! Or do you mean the drummer... :-0

  • @valeriacarla77 its at 4.01 i think, when sting sings a line in the background

  • @valeriacarla77 its at 4.01 i think, when sting sings a line in the background

  • 34 people who've seen this video have no clue what music is

  • i just love the little sentence at 4:00 : but sunday 'd be to late :)

  • me encanta este tema

  • Anyone find it ironic that "Seven Days" is in five?

  • @cwaidoh I'm sure it's no coincidence!

  • @cwaidoh yeah its awesome dude. i love this tune.

  • @cwaidoh Pretty cool!

  • @cwaidoh Well, it would be more difficult in 7/8, don't you think:)

Though, I love Sting's strange times, don't you think that's amazing:P which pop musician (now a days) does it? No one:P Sting will always be the most creative. Always pushing himself to a new artistic level! That's why he's great:P

  • @GSRobbert dave matthews band has some different time signatures in ther stuff

  • @Kobeownzu81 Cool, thanks for the tip, i'll check it out!

  • @cwaidoh i was just thinking that

  • @cwaidoh I was just talking to a student about that!

  • @cwaidoh Don't you just love what Sting does with time signatures? check out the time on "I hung my head" What the...?

  • @cwaidoh A working week?

  • @cwaidoh Only if it's ironic that "Four Sticks" is in 5/8, or that "Three Little Birds" is in 4/4, or that any other song with a number in its title is not in a time signature corresponding to that number.

  • @cwaidoh That's not what ironic means.

  • @cwaidoh I wonder if Sting is specific about what he wants or let's Colaiuta, sort of, dictate the feel.

  • @plazxgtr i think, it could be like, hey i want this tune in 5/4, but, keep a 4/4 feel, i mean i could not know., but i am pretty sure Sting gives him a lot of freedom, Sting is a great musician with respect for the others, and he knows what he's got...

    Godspeed.

  • @cwaidoh it should be in six cause Sunday'd be too late:)) ...makes me wonder why his '25 to midnight' is in seven then:)))) (if you like 7/4 or 7/8 or 5/4 and so on regarding the odd meter, look for Macedonian folk music here on you tube;) - Cheers!!!

  • @cwaidoh by four.

  • @cwaidoh only if its ironic if 3 blind mice is in 4........... bahaha

  • @cwaidoh that's not irony...

  • @cwaidoh That's about as ironic as ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife.

  • @cwaidoh Sometimes seven days pass like just a minute, in this case five days aren't so short! )))))

  • @cwaidoh it's a 6/8

  • @bshcuott Nope, 5/8 :)

  • @bshcuott count with the fingers, you'll have to be a little weird to be able to put 6 ticks in a measure

  • @cwaidoh

    take five! ;)

  • wow did someone who watched this video actually ask if the band is named Sting? lol

  • GREAT!

(but colaiutas drumming in this video clearly doesnt sync with the music played, wich means this is not footage from the actual recording of the song)

  • @Olav86 Of course it isnt.

  • I counted it like this. Hi-hat goes always four times, 1234 1234 1234 1234 and the whole beat, 12345 12345 12345 12345... bass drum always on 1 and snare on 4. Hi-hat goes four times and I count to five, so it's 5/4.

  • Comment removed

  • is sting the name of the band?

    I loove this song!!!!

  • @Razanalkatkotah no his name is sting the band used to be the police

  • Best song ever

    Legend

    Classic

    The bomb

  • i was thinkin the same thing Sgt lol 5/8....

  • @DrJLA 5/8 is not a bad guess but technically it's 5/4. It has to do with how the five beats are counted. 5/8 is counted as, "one two, one two three." 5/4 is counted, "one and two and three and four and five and."

  • Vinny Colaiuta is amazing!!!

  • a mear mortal sitting in a room with that much talent,,,your head would just simply explode

  • It's funny how the bass part in the chorus seems to make no sense when played in isolation... That's the magic of Gordon's music ;-)

  • this is a great song.......but it seems like they took the recording from the cd and lined it up with the video........looks like vinnie doing more awesome stuff thats not on the final recording everytime they show him (only a drummer would see something like that!!!) as if they were saying, "ok that was great, but it was too many notes! just cut a few and it will be perfect!!!

  • @drumman6901yep theres a click track in there........

  • sting is the greatest...vinnie is the shit!!!

  • une chansan unique avec le king

  • Vinnie's playing in 5/4 :D. Great song.

  • The drums in my '54 Days' video is directly inspired by the drum part in this - it's not a scratch on it, but check it out anyway!

  • god vinnie

  • this whole album is cool i had it years ago. wasent this recorded around the time sting dug bart simpson out of the well?

  • I wonder how many times the Steadicam operator tripped up in this studio?

  • the drumming is only awsome!!!

i think every drummer ,who wants to say hes good, has to play this and then hes good :)

  • @crackoish that's another song on my godly drum setlist. (mostly sting)

  • There was a time when I was so much in love . . .

  • pretty sure this is at his home in the English Countryside... nice house, nice song, nice band, nice career,,, man Sting is so cooooooooooooool love this track, he is so smart in so many ways,, musically, story telling, history.... wow

  • Excellent song.

  • In the original video they are actually playing live. But I cannot find anything but this "lip-synched" version.

  • Hey man, where did you get this video??, i have it, but in VHS, i really need it with this great quality!!!!!

    thanks for your help.

  • @angelarahumada this is not live. You are hearing the album version. You video has them playing this live in the room.

  • Best ever from Sting... an awesome music composed by a genius... 10/10...

  • Great song but I find it kind of amusing to see the headset worn differently through the entire song by Sting. I've got the same headset and the cord should be hanging on the left side. If you watch Sting, you'll see it hanging on the right side of his head.

  • @4sHiZzLeMaDiZzLe ... hahaha... you're right... how come I didn't notice that in the first place...

  • Vinnie IS the drum god.

  • sting has good taste in drummers. he has worked with stewart copeland and vinny colaiuta who sound very similar

  • Everyone always says how amazing this song is in 5/4. Dont get me wrong its a great tune.

But when playing it, its to fast to be going "12345" its all about the groove.

Once you get that. its like any other song

  • One astoundingly great song. Maybe the best song ever in 5/4

  • Check out '54 Days' on my channel. It's so in 5 and rocks the clean ass shite out of everything...

  • DAM THIS SONG!!!!! WHOS PLAYING THE BRUSH PART!!!!! RAWR!!!! ITS TO HARD FOR ONE PERSON!!!! screw drums....im gonna play the triangle

  • PERFECTO DESARROLLO DE RITMO DE 5/4.JOYITA

  • This is really serious drumming man! Didn't know "Vinnie Colaiuta" until know (thanks for pointing this out in the comments), amazing stuff!!

If you like this, also watch Manu Katché play this same song on the Sting DVD "all this time", also kickass drumming :D

  • cool

  • Tremendo tema, con una bata maravillosa!

  • @diegosalesjp Vinnie is the best their is Brutha, I'm about to record myself playing along with.

  • I believe this set was made in his studio - house in England = next to his yoga studio. GREAT piece but personally I am favoring the one with Chris Botti. Yes, I love the drummer. weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

  • @diegosalesjp > Honestly, they all do

Such a great piece of music......

  • pop music like that doesn't exist anymore :(
