It's a reference to Moses, who was taken up to the mountain top to VIEW the Promised Land (Canaan). Moses wasn't allowed to ENTER because of his disobedience, but God allowed him to VIEW the land before he died. So MLK's metaphor was about the promised land of Equality & Justice. He knew his time was up- he felt that he would soon be dead... but at least he saw (in the spirit) the promised land of equality and justice. Peace. :)
King was certain he was saved, he was talking to his enemies, if he was letting them know that even in death he won, its a very moving moment when you think about the context it was said in
Moses went to the mountaintop and God showed him the promised land. However, he never got there himself.
Dr. King is saying here that God has shown him that the future will be better than what he wa living in. Equal rights would come, and it did not matter if he lived to see them, because God had already shown him the "promised land."
The real reason why he was killed. America was happy with his passive aggressive but when he dared to question the war and the politics of war, he had to go. MLK in his latter days is the MLK I respect and adored.
For all posters, Please check out MLK's speech entitled, "Why I Am Opposed to the War in Vietnam", posted by noncorporatenews. Listen to it in it's entirety. He is litterally speaking from the grave.. It's a crime that MLK is only remembered by his "I have a Dream" speech and not his other works.
I noticed the exact same thing. We like to make King an icon without taking him seriously. Men like King seem to refuse to be icons though, but iconoclasts who make us uncomfortable because we NEED to be made uncomfortable.
Don't even compare Martin Luther King Jr to Wright. Martin Luther King Jr. followed the way of truth and love not hate and angry.Rev. King was a Christian, not a believer in black liberation theology. James Cone, an architect of black liberation theology, and a mentor of Obama's pastor Rev. Wright has described their theology thusly: "Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community..."
I didn't say Wright was not a Christian. What I said he follows the black liberation theology which Dr. King didn't. Black liberation theology states: "Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy...the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal."
PLUS Can anyone imagine Dr. King "humping" a fake Monica Lewinsky during a sermon with children present to mock clinton & further obama run.
Pat Robertson, an architect of the evangelical movement stated,
"The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians."
This statement is at best wholly inaccurate and at worst completely insane. There are many strands of feminism, even a conservative one.
I would like to know one member of the feminist movements that is advocating women slaughter their children.
I certainly would not claim that every evangelical that has been influenced through his massive media empire believes half of the asinine statements he makes, but if you feel you have the right to judge Wright on the basis of "selective statements" of his mentor, that's hypocrisy for you to deal with.
"The African-centered point of view does not assume superiority, nor does it assume separatism. It assumes Africans speaking for themselves as subjects in history, not objects in history...nor does it mean superior or inferior. The whole notion of hierarchical, one's superior, we must be separate because we're better, that has absolutely nothing to do with..."
Your accusations are unfounded, and I wish this did not turn into an Obama thread.
Wright can say and do whatever he wants. I really don't care .I am just saying that Martin Luther King jr. was different. The comparison of the two is what I had issue with. MLK had a different view and was very active in anti-war demonstrations,so its not a fair comparison that some people make. MLK followed the path of nonviolence in the spirit of Gandhi. I really don't care about rev. wright. He can do whatever...They are not similar so its not fair to see them on the same plane.
I will give you the part with Clinton. But, I think that there is a valid comparison between King & Wright. Perhaps, the way some things are stated become confusing. James Cone states "being black in America has very little to do with skin color. To be black means that your heart, your soul, your mind, and your body are where the dispossessed are...[It] does not mean that one's skin is physically black.1" It is a matter that God is with the disposessed in face of unjust opressive structures.
..."You are to ARROGANT!" If you dont change your ways I will rise up and break the back of your power & place it in the hands of a nation that doesn't even know my name".... How precient, he foresaw the rise of communist China.
This was beautiful. This so applies to today's arrogance by America. "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere". 40 years after his assassination, we are still struggling with the same atrocities that cripple this nation; racism, poverty, war, education, government's unapologetic insolence, etc. MLK died about 6 years before I was born, but he definitely had an affect on me growing up in this country. "Those who are unaware of history are destined to repeat it"
What a tradgedy that he was killed. Say what you will but I would prefer he lived a long life on earth instead of being shot to death.
When I see this I realize how America and Americans have regressed. I'm ashamed of our current administration and that they have been in power for as long as they have. Shame on you Bush and all the Americans who supported Bush.
his speeches against the war could be just as useful and relevant today concerning this fiasco in iraq that the bush/cheney/rice administration have us engulfed in. Vote Obama '08

I remember his speeches and interiews from the 6o's. I cried as a young person watching his funeral on TV.
This video reminded me of how much MLK influenced my life---I wrote an essay in response to those immortal words from his "I have a Dream" speech" when I was just a kid in Canada! How can we connect with him now? By invoking the same spirit of our Lord that sustained him through those dark and difficult days.

The true reason Dr. King dead was because the government didn't want him talking about the Vietnam War. The government could not afford for blacks not to help go and fight the war that really didn't have a meaning.
100 percent - This is what many people of all races have been intentionally blinded to... they think his most threatening stance was on Civil Rights; not so. Civil Rights/Womens Rights doubled the tax-base! The powers that be couldnt wait for that ! What they were threatened by was Dr.King's absolute clarity as the massively persuasive leader of the burgeoning Peace Movement and it's connection to Racial, Social and Economic Justice EVERYWHERE.
Having been brought up in the south, I have always known that MLK's famed oratory stemmed directly from his background as a southern protestant preacher. Now the proof, thanks to youtube. To see this, open this video along side one of a Billy Graham sermon from the same era. The resemblance is uncanny.
This man is one of the greatest men ever to live. Just imagine the 1960s without King ever stepping up to that podium. We'd be living in a different world today.

This may sound crual, but martin L King and Adolf Hitler were 2 best speakers of 20th century. Sure one was for and another against the war. one was saint and other a devil. But as a speakers, they could make 1000's cry and follow them.
I am a teacher. I will like to use your video for my class but I am unable to show it becaue the school system has blocked youtube. Will you please email me your video.
Black people really, really, need to wake up and reckognize that Dr. King isn't here and in 2008 their isn't that much difference in race relations between whites and Blacks.Alot has changed between the classes but rich white nobility still haven't changed because this nation just sweeps too much under the rug when we need to have real talks about race and issues sensibly. That's why education is so important and Dr.King being a doctor also knew this nation was very sick and still is.
This is the whitewashed side of Rev. King. These views of King should be taught just as much as his civil rights views, as they are complementary. It is wrong, it is a sin, to take one of Dr. King's activities and use it for your benefit, and ignore the rest of his message.
"My eyes have seen the coming glory of the LORD!!!" I don't care if he did dip in the cookie jar, he was still a Great MAN. After that speech he was shot by the CIA.Prophetic.
funny I have been hearing about Martin Luther King Jr. my how life in school and yet never knew how much he truly loved God and his whole life was based upon him yet the schools never talked about that about him....:( very sad.. Ever he said that the schools will be the gate way to Hell because they will take out God and the bible
Or leave God out the Qu'ran.I don't know ur background but rich white people run this country and the world. Many white people feel they have helped Blacks by being nice to them in a way that is subnormal and condesending.I'm personally at a point that i'm know seeing is that Islam is what the west needs. Not Saudi or Africa or India but we need a more common ground cus Christianity hasn't helped bridge that gap yet.
They also don't talk about his radical dissent on the war. There is a very narrow image of all famous people that comes down in a kind of mythic overlay that ignores most of what they were about.
...his speech should be translated and printed on leaflets and dropped all through the middle east....that would be much more effective then any bullets..
LOL Truth sucks doesn't it? Boston University found MLK guilty of plagiarism and close associate/friend of MLK even said he was a womanizer. So why does MLK get away with plagiarism while someone else with a PhD would get their degree instantly revoked for a fraction of the amount of plagiarism that MLK was found guilty of? That is RACIST.
Our troubled world needs a man/woman like MLK to wake up America to a new direction, one in which we respect all races, pay everyone a living wage and seek nonviolent solutions rather than saber-rattling an lies.
Watch out this year as the elections go on, and the politicians try to put on their show. There will be plenty of liars and corporate politicians who will try to quote MLK, and use his words to their advantage.
Makes me sick. Ms. Clinton could not just say something nice about Dr. King, but wants us to remember that it was (white man) LBJ that blah, blah, blah. Yet I just had a frustrating time with a "black" woman who insisted Hillary is better than Barack, citing Hillary's lies as proof. AARGH.
"Don't let anybody make you think that God chose America as His divine messianic force to be a ... policeman of the whole world. God has a way of standing before the nations with judgment and it seems that I can hear God saying to America, 'You are too arrogant! If you don't change your ways I will rise up and break the backbone of your power and I'll place it in the hands of a nation that doesn't even know my name.' "
Dr. King and Bob Dylan both spoke words in the 60s that sound like today's war.I love that Dr. King speaks for both "the poor white and Negro." Many of all races don't realize that Dr. King was for justice for ALL.
MLK was a solid liberal. When conservatives try to take on his legacy as their own, it's so funny - one of his chief advisors were gay, socialist and avowedly anti-war. And King for a long time was completely cool with him. He himself was anti-war but he hesitated in acting against the President on Vietnam with so much left to do on civil rights. But he tried to do both, and it nearly killed him before Memphis did.
MLK needs to be brought back for his actual speeches. Great man,who could have stopped the corruption of "black leadership" by the likes of Sharpton and Jackson.
Please review the video on Dr. King entitled, "The Drum Major Instinct". It's 4 minutes and 36 seconds of heart-wrenching truth. Between you and I, we can realize Dr. King's dream!!! Thanks for your individual contribution and God Bless You!!!!
i love martin luther king. he changed the world, his speeches were amazing. if someone spent their whole life trying to write a speech as good as one of MLK's, it would be a life well spent.
Okay 3crs you heard but didn't listen.A problem that we huamns have.He didn't cause hate, nor did he speak hate either. He wanted all people and all races to live as one and in peace. Why are you so afraid of that?
Martin, he is our father he is not a President. He has the right, to do is to stop this hate with war beside enemy with white & black that was in the old days, i don't care i am white i'm his-spainc(at least i do speak spainsh)
We know, that he is up there and that we learn way back to the history how Maritn did..
I totaly agree with you on this. Obama's voting record his agreement with sustaining the war would totaly be against Dr. King. Just because Obama is a little black doesn't mean he's the voice for black people, what has he done for anyone?
thats right, obama is for the Patriot Act - an act that is unconstitutional and takes away the very freedoms that Dr. King was fighting so hard for! a government SERVES the PEOPLE. not the other way around.
I agree it's so painful that our president today is such a moron and has continued the pain and horror the great MLK spoke against. This country has gone to SHIT!
LOL Truth sucks doesn't it? Boston University found MLK guilty of plagiarism and close associate/friend of MLK even said he was a womanizer. So why does MLK get away with plagiarism while someone else with a PhD would get their degree instantly revoked for a fraction of the amount of plagiarism that MLK was found guilty of? funny I have been hearing about Martin Luther King Jr. my how life in school and yet never knew how much he truly loved God and his whole life was based upon him yet the schools never talked about that about him....:( very sad..

King was for justice for ALL.
bevotaylor 4 years ago
MLK was a solid liberal. When conservatives try to take on his legacy as their own, it's so funny - one of his chief advisors were gay, socialist and avowedly anti-war. And King for a long time was completely cool with him. He himself was anti-war but he hesitated in acting against the President on Vietnam with so much left to do on civil rights. But he tried to do both, and it nearly killed him before Memphis did.

Can you elaborate on the differences between Obama and MLK? That is interesting about Paul-why is he in the wrong party?
bevotaylor 4 years ago
I totaly agree with you on this. Obama's voting record his agreement with sustaining the war would totaly be against Dr. King. Just because Obama is a little black doesn't mean he's the voice for black people, what has he done for anyone?
chamokc 4 years ago
thats right, obama is for the Patriot Act - an act that is unconstitutional and takes away the very freedoms that Dr. King was fighting so hard for! a government SERVES the PEOPLE. not the other way around.

OBAMA is the blessing that we begged GOD for! Now what?

With YOUR help, Sen. OBAMA can & will be the President, NOW!
Honest Gov't & INTELLIGENT LEADERSHIP!
Bush didn't know what a Shiite or Sunni was, when he lied to justify killing their families & OURS.
Sen OBAMA implored the Prez not to invade thus starting a sectarian civil war.
The GOP & Billary & Edwards did not study the INTEL Report.
Bush & Cheney got WEALTHIER due to this war, DID YOU?
US Soldiers fight/DIE DAILY & we pay $275Mil per day.
Vote for change in DC politics, OBAMA '08!
