  • goin for masters and p.h.d how old is this kid

  • @hornedfrogmw31 In this video? I was 26 :P

  • Precious little kids at the end :)

  • Bang Le Douche...

  • How the hell can people dislike a video that's about helping less fortunate people? I just don't understand.

  • the dude who sneeks up at 0:57 ... hilarious... LOL!!! btw nice work shawn!

  • why the fuck r there people just staring at u

  • 1. watch your mouth

    2. it's are and you

    3. to them someone talking to a camera is a novelty... do you remember being a kid? Did you love being in front of one, or know someone who did (does).

  • Thats a good observation. People saying odd things are lucky enough to born in a secured environment. Most of us, we dont feel, unless we touch and keep talking big.

  • i really think people like you can make such a big differnce, just thinking how many people you have helped must make you feel so proud beleve me i would be, well done =]

  • I dont have the heart to make a change like you do. I wish you all the best.

  • umm ok while im all for helpin people..if you really want to help em..tell em to move their homes to non-cyclone prone areas. same thing for Indonesia..YOU Got a fuckin volcano on and around your living area expect earthquakes and eruptions..move your stupid arses out of there. no point giving money or aid to pplz who are too dumb to move away from a known Natural disaster area. seriously i say the same thing to the dumbarses in New Orleans..don't waste our money move idiots!!

  • I was reading your comment and I was mentally thinking "what about New Orleans"? So you get points for not having a double standard.

So when can the 50 million people (out of the 150 million in Bangladesh) move to your backyard? Because clearly you must be in a place immune from volcanoes, earthquakes, cyclones, hurricanes, terrorist attacks, forest fires, and flooding.

  • My god, you don't have any idea about the people troubled by disasters. You are thinking with your arrogant side of the brain.

    Here is the fact:

    1. The people in BD don't have a place or MONEY to move out

    2. In fact they don't have the ability to move back in the same place.

    3. They don't have enough money for food

    4. Bangladesh is not US/New Orleans

    5. This whole country is a disaster prone. So, moving somewhere else is really not an option

  • good luck with the project, bro. Try paying a visit to the middle east while ur at it LOL.

  • LOL youre gonna get jumped, raped, and youre shit stolen

  • good luck man, hope you help a lot of people.

  • Keep up the awesome!

  • Uh huh. Look, anyone who has bothered to even look at a handful of my videos can judge for themselves.

I'm not soliciting your donation. People want to donate? They can. People don't want to donate and just watch? That's cool too.

Please don't keep spamming - you've said your piece.

  • you tell him sean. we nerdfighters are behind you.

  • <3 wassupusa

  • haha back atcha ahmed.

in my mind im like SOMEONEs gotta get this guy an xbox.

but then i realize youd rather have that money go to the people from bangladesh and those affected by the cyclone.

but still. id love to see you on that xbox man...

  • Just a quick final thought coolbeans278. If this was indeed a scam, I would have deleted your comments so no one could read them.

I'm keeping your comments up because - even though you're wrong about your claims that this is a scam - you made your case without being terribly bigoted.

    Best wishes.

  • I dont even think Shawn should acknowledge comments from people like you....what a waist of time you are...and a CLASS ACT..you should be ashamed of yourself sitting on your ass criticizing, while this guy is actually trying to help the ones that need it the most.....what a shame...

  • I was about to say it is a pretty elaborate scam to go all the way to Bangladesh to scam money from (sadly) a small group of people.

Best of luck to you Shawn.

  • is there a bank account so i can send you some money?!

  • Not a bank account - but I do have a PayPal. You can go to uncultured(dot)com/donations to find out more.

I don't use these donations to cover costs like living expenses, food, or airfare. If you want to send money for that you should write to me privately or something.

  • Yes... because it would be cheaper to hire actors to pretend to be poor than to actually use the money to help the poor? Dude, I know there are poverty-related scams out there, but your proposing would cost more than actually being legit.

  • you arent a very smart person.

  • guys in the back like the camera

  • They plotting to steal it.

  • oh yeah i found the paypal link

  • they alwas do that in india!

  • wow you think thats funny you should feel like crap for saying that but even more for being from scotland hahahahaha fucking scottish ha what a retard group off people haha

  • ROFLLLLLLLLLLLL

  • diaf

  • wow great video. I am bengali and your videos really inspire me.

  • Your great man. good job

  • woot go bangladesh. I'm actually bengali too and i love what ur doing here.

I love bengali people cuz any time they see a camera they always stand in the background and stare and try to see what ur doing. esp. the cop.

  • good luck with your dream

  • lmao those guys in the background are great

  • to uncultured project:i also want to make a difference to the world..and i want to start it here in the philippines since this is a third world country..i like what you are doing and it inspired me to do more for the less priviledge..can you help me?

  • this video makes a lot of sense!! love it!!

  • So who actually won the competition or did you win?

  • I came in second place with over 900 votes. First place when to a now defunct web series called Iago + Dmitri.

  • I'm from atlanta to man.

  • lol at the inconspicuous cop in the background.

    Nice vid! Great job!

  • I am from there XD

  • Bangladehs police men are weirdos lOL !

  • Police man lol :D

  • Great job. Keep up your great work.

  • good work, keep it up, ur doing a brilliant job, to anyone reading these comments, please subscribe to UnculturedProject

  • was that a police man he was funny lol

  • I think he might have been security for the building I was standing next to. But yeah, most people here are really easy going and can be quite funny when they want to be. :)

  • Hey dude, why don't you go and check the province of Syhlet? go to a district called dullar bazaar, sunamgonj.

  • Great work. You are actually doing what many of us think about doing but never get to it. Keep up the good work. You are a great inspiration.

  • lol @ the people behind you

  • wow thank u for showing this and appreciate what we have, and is sad to say in this days but is not fair bringing kids to this world to suffer hunger and ppor

  • alot of these children are not brought into this world willingly many are by rape.

  • How would you like a life of celebacy just because you don't have access to birth control? These people have the desires to get married and have a family like anyone else and they might have been able to support their children better before they got sick, their spouse died, some accident, ect. It's not fair to say, just don't have children.

  • Good luck, you incredible person!

  • go to the philippines

  • hey if you cant say something nice dont say it at all, man.

    i applaud you shawn. dftba

  • hey! you should join a micro-credit organization! it's a great way to break the poverty cycle because it allows people to start their own businesses and sustain them!

  • Hi Shawn, I really appreciate what you're doing. I'm from the Philippines and you inspired me to do the same thing in my country. I'm going to post your video on my Friendster and i'm hoping that way i can touch someone's heart and make a change for good. Thank you for people like you. hehehe i really wish i win the lottery so i could help you out and everyone else.

  • verry good i am proud of u good bless u

  • Bro me 4rm london n i lyk wat ya doing av ya gt ur own charity set up yet???

N by da way wat r ur nex plans??

  • Hey, I don't have my own charity set up. I'm still in Bangladesh trying to work on this project for the next few months. After that, I dunno.

  • hmm where does phil annouce the winners of the contest? could someone post a link?

  • I'm from Bogra, Bangladesh and I think that police man was acting really funny in the background

  • that is not a police man

  • You drew quite the crowd there! I'm subbed.

  • The power of the camera in this part of the world is amazing. My fav is when I can show kids what I'm filming. The outro music/clip is when I had my LCD screen flipped out so that the kids could see what I was filming (which is why they were pointing and smiling).

  • Hey, can I use a portion of your clip for my show? I need permission to use it.

  • Hey, I left a message on your channel comment section. I'd be honored if you used some of my footage for your show.

I tried posting this comment three times and failed. Hopefully fourth times-a-charm. Silly Bangladesh internet.

  • Start a paypal account or something. You have a great chance to do a feedback-type system. For example: "Hey user123, this dollar you sent over bought this man (whose on tape) this blanket and a meal." I can picture that something growing to a "Hey YouTube, here's a new school thats up now with your help!"

You're obviously not someone standing in front of a green screen and I'm sure there's people that will help you in your cause. I look forward to seeing your progress, best of luck!

  • dear unculturedproject, I love your work and think you can do much good for people. I would be proud to say I lost to you :), <3 greg.

  • Hey Greg, you got more guts than I do - that's for sure.

I showed an American flag near a mosque in a Muslim country. But you singing the national anthem on a busy street with a red, blue, and white (patriotic) mohawk? That takes balls.

    Much love and respect.

    - Shawn.

  • you got my vote bud! i really look forward to seeing your videos - what you're offering has some substance. you do seem a little nervous on camera though, but im sure after a few videos that'll change :)

    best of luck man!

  • Thanks man :-) Yeah, I am really nervous in front of the camera.

At first, I was thinking of making these videos in a way that I could be completely anonymous and off-camera. But, I decided against it because I didn't want these videos to become a gimmick.

  • good job, dude. i wish i had the money to go to impoverished areas to help. unfortunately i do not, but at least i can hold you as an example of what i should aspire for. maybe while you are over there, i can focus on getting started with the effort here at home....i hope you accomplish your goals there. cheers.

  • Hey there are poor everywhere - although maybe not as extreme as the third world. But, that's what this is all about. I want to pay it forward and inspire someone else just like I was inspired. :-)

  • Hey, to answer a few questions:

    1) When I get back, I still have more videos about Bangladesh to edit and upload. After that's over, I plan on taking a break. I want this channel to ALWAYS be meaningful.

    2) Why more views? I want to inspire someone in the same way I was inspired. I don't need to win the sxephil contest for that to happen. But the more views I have, the better the chance I have of paying it forward.

  • I hope you win=)

  • i'm completley amazed by this! i really want you to win i'm so glad you made the top 5. finally someone on youtube with a great case

  • Wait there is something I don't understand... Apart from rising public awareness which I think is really generous of you, why do you want to have subscribers? So that when you come home (to Bangladesh?) and you're not focused on "advertising" poverty you can advertise yourself? I'm not trying to be mean... I'm really asking :)

    KUdos! subbed!

  • Great question! I have tons of footage I took as early as July that I have yet to upload to YouTube. Coming back home doesn't mean that there isn't new videos on Bangladesh to share.

But, after that, I don't know where I would take it. I want this channel to always be meaningful. Even if that means I'll be taking a big hiatus after this particular project is done.

  • thanks for answering my question :)

  • Kudos for your efforts and luck for your future.

  • I was born in the NY but my parents were born Bangladesh Rulzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Cool dude but the poor people behind you look like they were going to eat you so I voted for you.

  • I think maybe they kept looking at it like that because they don't see cameras very often..

  • Amazing job.. I just don't get why you're trying to get that many views: i'm not being sarcastic or making fun of you; id' just like to help and idk what i can do, 'cause you didn't say anything about it in the video..

  • That's a good question. Basically, I think what I'm doing here is something a bit unique and never been done on YouTube before. I just would like to share that with as many people as possible.

But realistically, I just want the majority of the people viewing my videos not to be my family :P

  • Im from Bangladesh! =)

  • That's awesome! Count me in as a subscriber.

  • I love the random people in the background. Excellent cause as well. I'll subscribe.

  • That's a really good idea. It is so important to generate awareness of these kinds of problems. I will continue to watch your videos and I hope that sxephil gives you props for what you're trying to do.

  • i love how theirs people just standing there.... and i think your great.

  • I think what your doing is a great idea. Awesome idea actually.

You're a good man and I hope you succeed in your efforts on YouTube and more importantly in life.

  • Thanks for the kind words - much appreciated :-)

  • Zack thinks that It is useless... but, it just seems so... because only few people are actually doing something... but, If all of us starting to change the design in witch we live..... hm, then massive change would happen.

  • Shawn; Sociology Graduates rock.

  • haha - thanks! :-)

  • on the other hand you do a lot of good. cyclone sidr was bad, you are doing good to help it. you need mad more subs. you deserve 50,000. (that's truth.) i hope you understand the connections...

  • haha - thanks :-)

If it wasn't for Dr. Jeffrey Sachs giving a speech and sharing some photos of his work in the field,I'd be sitting at home watching TV and doing homework. He's inspired tons of people to go abroad and to try and make a difference.

I'd like more subs -- not because I am trying to become a YouTube celebrity, but because I am a huge fan of the idea of paying it forward. I want to inspire others as I have been inspired.

  • yeah, of course, if everyone went over to bangladesh and handed out blankets, the seas would still be sucked and the trees would still be cut and the plastic would still be produced, and the prophets would still be drugged.

    we must stop it.

  • I love your passion about this issue -- even if we may disagree on a few things. If more people came to the third world, people would also learn that its possible to live in more environmentally sustainable ways. Bangladeshis -- especially the poor -- do not waste anything. Spending time here has made me more aware of my environmental footprint. And seeing things like Cyclone Sidr has made me more aware of the impact people in the developed world have on the environment.

  • ... and then you directly contradict yourself ;) I agree, and I think you and I can do allot to help Shawn get the subscribers he needs. Feature him in one of your videos, even if it is just to argue with his world view. Your subs will appreciate the link.

  • if you want my thoughts, what you're doing is pretty useless.

helping individuals in bangladesh feels good, but how does it help end the problems that got us all in this mess?

"poor" happens when you have "rich" you cant help the "poor" without destroying Civilization itself (which i am down for)

  • Hey Zack - I appreciate your comment. I have to admit, I sometimes feel that what I am doing is futile and a bit "useless". But that's not the point. I believe things will get better - not with civilization's destruction - but by plugging ourselves into our common humanity. Being rich isn't evil - but not caring about those suffering is.

I can't end poverty myself -- but maybe, hopefully, I can inspire others. That, in turn, might build up to end of poverty.

  • being rich is evil. being rich MEANS other people have to suffer for you to get there.

we can't end poverty without ending civilization.

  • I don't think that's entirely true -- look at history. The kind of extreme poverty you see in Bangladesh was quite common in Europe during the middle ages. But, Europe now has a better standard of living than even America. Where did the poor go? EXTREME poverty disappeared in Europe because of progress and prosperity. Yes, there was colonialism -- but the prosperity caused by colonialism helped BOTH rich and poor. We need a system of development that can create prosperity for the third world.

  • look at this. do me a favor and examine what you just said. "we need a system of development that can create prosperity for the third world."

"system of development" fuck that who said we have to develop anything besides good health and sane children?

"prosperity" i don't see any, anywhere, at all. please define this word.

"third world" search on youtube for the video entitled, 'debunking myths about the third world' and watch it.

  • With all due respect, for which much is due,

    fuck all that.

    Fuck Civilization.

  • This whole trip/project is a learning experience for me -- not trying to preach a particular worldview.

The major thing that is holding me from ascribing to your view is that I am too much of an optimist. I don't believe anyone - or any civilization - is beyond the point of no return.

Who knows? If I spend a little more time here, maybe I will lose that optimism and start to share your view.

  • Ha ha! Zach, I love ya! Your nothing if not decisive; 'what your doing is pretty useless'. I can't think of anything more useful than making a direct impact on peoples lives. If we all did at least one thing to improve the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves, the world would start to resemble the one we were debating the other day.
