  • Its a copy of BJJ. It all started with BJJ and Vale Tudo. Then other styles began to adopt the system.

  • Wrestling is Grappling, Wrestling is the Tree an Ju jitsu, Judo, Shoot fighting an other Grappling Style's are the Branche's.

  • i dont see how in grappling you punch this is just mma not only jiu jitsu and wrestling so rename the god damn thing

  • @Anese23 Jealous cause your precious jiu jitsu got pwned?

  • @SuperDUDERIKI stfu ur a dbag a real man doesnt say anything about the who won

  • @awesomemisfitfan No,u stfu if Gracie won you would have been all over Saku's nuts.

  • Sakuraba got beat by the gracies newest.

  • Sakurabas a BEAST... Still the fact remains, he used BJJ in this fight. While Gracie also used wrestling.

  • @joeylz96 Actually Sakuraba used Catch as Can Catch wrestling not BJJ.

  • @panther2552 And your saying that Catch doesn't have any elements of jits in it?

  • @joeylz96 im saying Catch wrestling is it's own version of submission grappling. obviously some of the same moves were developed but it's a far older form of sub grappling than is BJJ/GJJ

  • Sakuraba remained practically the whole fight as a winner...

  • the messiah of professional grapping

  • I can never forgive Sakuraba for the bs he pulled this fight! :P

  • @MeanJoeJiuJitsu and what beautiful bs it was :P

  • cant beat a good wrestling backround

  • looks like 2 dudes beating each ather near some pub .....

  • Sakuraba = wrestling????

    u r stupid...

  • @soares156 he very much = wrestling. He a Catch as Can Catch Wrestler (submission wrestling derived from old Greek Pancratian) taught by Billy Robinson. Not to mention his extensive collegiate wrestling background where he beat 2 olympic gold medalists and a bronze medalist during his career.

  • @panther2552 to say Sakuraba is wrestler is the same that to say Lyoto Machida is just karate. Both are MMA! Sakuraba is complete figther and he fighted using all your skills in that fight. do u agree with me? It is!

  • @soares156 The person who posted the vid isn't saying he's only a wrestler. He's saying that's Sakuraba's base. which it is. Much like Machida falls back on his Karate background. When Machida gets taken down his first instinct is to get it back to standing and use his Karate to strike and be elusive. Saku falls back on his wrestling skills to win. Saku's inventiveness can also be attributed to his pro wrestling background when we'd see him do things noone ever expected to see in a real fight.

  • @panther2552 Yes... U r right. Thanks for ur coments. hugs.

  • royce is a legendary fighter i respect the hell out of him, but he sucks standing im sorry.

  • ovcadva, you must tap 3 times. Sakuraba was playing with Gracie. He tapped only 2 times to try to trick Gracie into releasing the hold.

  • god bless sakuraba ;)

  • In the late 80's, early 90's. The Gracies will have all these taped underground fights against all fighting disciplines and beat the crap out of all opponents.

I guess that was a day to big a striker.

  • Best part in my opinion is when he goes over and says good fight to the losing team. That is a good part of fighting when you can still have respect for each other after a brutal fight. Love this shit.

  • This fighting is so great for its time it makes this mediocre pop song sound good. Thanks for the post!!!

  • @Guinea54 the stances for boxing and a sport like MMA are completely different, in order to counter/avoid take-downs boxers would have to switch their stance which would take away a good percentage of their punching power. not too mention that grappling and wrestling fatigue the arms a great deal as well.

  • royce beat him in a rematch and if royce didnt asked for no time limet he would have one that one 2

  • @NavySealBrad Royce used steroids for the rematch and was suspended for the remainder of his fighting license. If Royce hadn't made all the rules for this fight, Sakuraba would have fought a different style of fight for this one.

  • @panther2552 ur moron that was after he fault matt huges he got cauth and this fight was years after that is that was true when u look at the record now it say he losted 4 drug used

  • @NavySealBrad did you even read what i said? i said the Saku vs Royce REMATCH was when Royce was caught on roids. that's a fact. it wasn't years after the Matt Hughes fight it was just under a year. the Saku Royce rematch happend 11 months after Royce Hughes. I state a fact you start with the childish insults.

  • lol isnt real those kicks were slow and fake if it was real, those knee kicks would've killed the wrestler easy..

  • @vyrewatch12321 ? it was the wrestler Sakuraba who was throwing those kicks. Royce ended up with a broken leg.

  • pone completa la pelea pelotudo sino no pongas

  • ugh i hate it i wish gracie would've worked a little more on his standup. Still a hero in my eyes though.

  • this is not wright sakuraba tapt

  • @ovcadva Saku was playing around. right after the tap he was playing with Royces pants. If he was in any danger he would have went to sleep. And don't forget in the first round Royce tapped too and caught himself when Saku had him in the kneebar. The announcers even made mention of it.

  • @Mrjustinqqq yea and sakuraba tapt but the reff did not stop you can see that he tapt

  • judo vs jiu jtsu

  • damn that looked like an epic battle

  • @robertop699 it was. they fought for an hour and a half with royce throwing in the towel. Later that same night Sakuraba fought Igor Vovchanchyn the number 1 heavyweight in the world for 15 mins to a draw, though Saku's corner threw in the towell so he wouldn't have to fight the overtime round, he was too exhausted.

  • royce sucked dick in this fight

why the fuck did he try and stand with this guy?

he should have done what he does best and get on his back and submit the dude...

  • @bjapan96 he tried that and was nearly knee barred twice for it, saved by the bell both times. It's not like Royce was fighting someone who he could just easily sub. He was fighting Sakuraba the best sub fighter in MMA history.

  • @what are you a fucking retard sakuraba the best sub fighter in mma dude you ned to learn about mma minotauro does that means anything to you?

  • @ovcadva Nog is the best sub mma heavyweight ever for sure. not the best overall. Sakuraba is the only fighter in MMA who has subbed tons of great sub specialists including Netwon, Minnowa, Royler, Renzo, Braga, Funaki, White, Silvera, not including decision wins. Whereas Nog has only ever really subbed non submission fighters in MMA with the exception of maybe Herring, not including decision wins.

  • You should change the title CATCH WRESTLING....

  • matt hughes fought gracie when he was old motherfukka GRACIES AND SAKU BOTH LEGENDS i bet most people who had commented are american h8ing GAAAAAAAYS

  • Ridiculous Gracie female, ops, family.

  • rape.

  • gracie boys are GGGGGGGGGGGGGGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYSSSSSSSS

  • Question: i know that wrestling is a very good ground technique, my respect to all them wrestlers out their, but what about if they were put up against a MMA guy... like no strikes at all just ground fighting?

  • @sweetboy21100 well Saku is considered the best submission fighter ever so depending on the style of wrestling the wrestlers uses they can do very well. Saku's base is in freestyle/collegiate wrestling and Catch as can catch wrestling (an old old form of submission wrestling taught to him by Billy Robinson)

  • why didn the reff shot that tap at 1:08 only in japan.

  • @consciouscafe1 Saku was taunting him with the double tap. Official rules are you have to tap 3 times to submit to a fighter. Saku is a clown in the ring and likes to play around. He was never in trouble at 1:08

  • @consciouscafe1 first, Saku was playing around 2 seconds after doing that he was pulling Royce's pants down. Saku wasn't in trouble or he'd of passed out soon after. Secondly if the ref counted that tap then he would have had to count Royces single tap in the first round to that kneebar. Royces tapped once then caught himself and the ref rightly let it go.

  • Well, wrestlers sure seem to be doing well. Look at what Sonnen did to Silva, although he lost. The top heavyweights all have top wrestling backgroung. Fitch keeps winning, etc. Wrestling allows the fighter to control the fight from top and that is very valuable.

  • Sakuraba tapped. what the hell

  • @sanchorodgomez Saku was playing around. He did the double tap then started pulling down Royces pants. Also gotta remember Royce tapped in the first round in the kneebar, then caught himself quick. And as for letting the wrestlers tire themselves out, that depends on the wrestler i reckon. Sakuraba's a freestyle and catch wrestler and his Cardio is through the roof.

  • @panther2552 well idk thats debatable, in the kneebar i dont belive that royce was tapping but putting his hand down to brace himself, and your absoloutley right it all depends on the type of wrestler but again you have to remember wrestlers have a sever disadvatage because they wont go to there back and there are a number of moves you need to fall to you back to execute

  • @sanchorodgomez Royce Grimaces and taps once then catches himself looking at the ref. Stephen Qautros, Bas and Maurice Smith all noticed it. Saku was in the guillotine but standing with a straight body in no danger, after his tap he started pulling Royces pants down and if the choke was really set, Saku woulda been asleep or atleast gassed but he wasnt.

Yes i agree if it's Freestyle or Greco wrestlers they'd be at a disavantage on their backs, but not so much for catch as can catch wrestlers.

  • pfft the stupid wrestler taped

  • Sakuraba e hum Filho da puta Acaba com Ele eu minutu UM ei

  • Two great fighters.

I'm not a fan of the Gracies but I respect their legacy.

Sakuraba was one of the greatest pound for pound fighters of all time. He suffered some hard losses against much larger opponents, but that doesn't negate his toughness or amazing fighting abilities.

He threw down with anyone, anywhere, and it was always a spectacle to see.

  • i do Jiujitsu but i keep losing to wrestlers, i fucking hate them!

  • @samanbandana Well what do you expect? The point of wrestling is to completely prevent the opponent from moving, and in the case of arts such as Coraíocht, cause lasting damage, if not, kill. The point of Jujitsu is self-defense.

  • @samanbandana alls you gotta do man is sit back and let the wrestlers get tired, they are trained to go very fast and use alot of energy, i know because i am a wrestler and i do bjj

  • @sanchorodgomez ha same here bro, i beat some varsity wrestlers just by letting them get tired from the gaurd, real effective way to do it

  • The Sakuraba win's, because Royce in the six round the breaks ankle, but tthis fight was much controversy, at minute 1:08 of video Sakubara quit and the referee don't see. For me Royce win

  • @leosimoes21 actually saku was playing. just after he did the single tap he start pulling down royce's pants(if he was really in trouble he wouldn't have been screwing around. he'd have been fighting hard to get out, or go to sleep). not to mention Royce did a tap earlier in the fight when caught in the kneebar in the first aswell.

  • sakuraba is a fucking legend, and so is gracie. but excluding all other variables such as speed, endurance, power, basing technique alone, i'd say wrestling > any jujitsu. just my opinion though

  • I'm a Gracie family fan and I love BJJ but like everything else nothing is full proof. The bottom line is that in a MMA fight or even a good street fight you need to know what the hell you are doing both in the hands and feet and know what to do when you're on the ground, period. Sakuraba showed that he could throw those hands and he knew what to do on the ground.

  • lmao ... royce got owned so hard!

  • i always said Wrestling is more good ..come on guys learn Wrestling

  • The Winner.....Sakuuurabba ! ! !

  • 1:08 the ref must have missed the tap

  • 1:08 min. Royce taps out Sakuraba with a guilhotine choke, but the central didn't seem it!!!

  • @metaleiro2212 well gracie stated the rules were 3 taps to signal a submission.saku was doing the 2 taps in to get the crowd pumping it was hilarious royce was getting angry because he had the move in tight but saku was like wahtever.

  • @metaleiro2212 if you watched the fight you see Saku was playing. half a second after doin that he's pulling down Royce's pants. Royce also did a one, tapper when caught in the kneebar in the first round aswell.

  • You shoud have seen how Vanderlei treated Sakuraba as if he were his son. Sakuraba is a clawn

  • Wrestling FTW!!!!

  • Wrestler is still better

  • very good!!! gracie hunter

  • Its weird how UFC developed, well not real probably logical...If all fighters had to fight one day in an anything goes enviornment, the person with striking and stamina would most likely prevail.

    Right?

  • We ain't gonna see a white, scrawny mofo take on a sumo wrestler anymore lol...Good times though.

  • @schmeltingaccident umm back when they had those UFC tourny's or the Grand Prix's in pride such as this one was. it was the Grapplers that won. Royce, Severn, Saku, Coleman, etc.

  • Respect, I guess you are right. Im new into MMA, but I've been doing my homework...And by that I mean sitting on my ass watching old UFC fights.

I wanted to see St. Pierre's fight tonight...Hope he won.

  • @schmeltingaccident if you ever get a chance get some old Pride Fc dvd's There's great fights in the UFC, but Pride would put on shows that would have 6 fights on one card that would be UFC ppv mainevents.

  • Thanks man, I will...Its fun looking this kinda stuff up

  • очень даже достойный бой!

  • great fight and great choice of music!

  • The Gracie;s did prove that their single form of fighting could beat other single styles. Once wrestlers figured out how to deal with their submissions and how to end a fight with ground and pound, things have changed mightitly. The Gracies remained arrogantly adamant that their style alone could be enough. Matt Hughes and others proved them wrong. Boxing, BJJ and Wrestling are all needed now.

  • @MrCheohernandez lol Sakuraba here proved that long before Hughes did. Hughes is an amazing fighter, but really all he did was beat a 40 year old man which he should have done anyway. The UFC is probably going to try and tout him as the "Gracie Hunter" if he can get past Renzo, though Saku did it in their primes.

  • Yep. Strikers adapted as well. Solid striking + solid takedown defense = KO'd Gracies.

  • @MrCheohernandez Yep. Though, if I recall correctly, I believe Renzo was less arrogant in keeping the Gracie way 'pure' and mixed in some other styles a bit.

  • @MrCheohernandez Corection, not Boxing but Kickboxing and Gracie never beat CroCop

  • @MrCheohernandez Terrific observation. I've said this many times myself. Royce was never a "mixed" martial artist.

  • @MrCheohernandez Yea exactly, all you need is takedown D and avoid submisions with power and ground and pound. The gracies are one dimentional and it shows, they used to say the same about stand up only fighters now the same goes for them as ground fighters only, you need both.

  • @MrCheohernandez well the main problem and the real difference between BJJ in the early mma days and BJJ now is the GI. bjj was and still is heavily based on GI. its the same issue Judokas have in mma.

adapting bjj and judo to a no-gi format is the only way to really make it super effective. youll see that when bjj artists are thrown in with no gi, they are usually very lost and dont really know what to do.

more and more dojos are adapting and practicing a no-gi format to keep it relevant

  • @MrCheohernandez i agree, without a stand up game or ground game ur pretty much gonna lose all the time in the ufc

  • @MrCheohernandez No,Bjj,Muay thai,Jkd thats what you need to learn buddy

  • @MrCheohernandez there are other grappling arts that have submission besides jIu jistu. Kazushi Sakaraba style is catch wrestling, pro wrestling and some even credit him as shootfighting. all has submission holds. if u look up ur history. wrestling been around before karate ven was. so it was around before jiu jistu

  • @MrCheohernandez Very nice point. BJJ is a supplemental style at best, yet these Gracies remain so arrogant about their style because or early UFC success. not to mention that on the street with all of its surroundings and surfaces (& no gloves( that is even less useful

  • @MrCheohernandez this is not vrily bjj vs wrestling cus he beat mostly on stand up cus gracie dosnt knows stand up

  • @MrCheohernandez at least kickboxing is needed to kicks are needed

  • @MrCheohernandez once a good pro boxer figures out how to deal with the submissions and grappling in general they probably will completely dominate.

  • What I think is q q if SAKURAWA not use this trick to grab the clothes GRACIE lost if not then fixed at the start was even and that q GRACIE is not much to my liking but ahy q recognize the quality and besides winning the rematch buesno x not much room greetings

  • @chipsmovistar I'm sorry i didn't quite understand all you typed my friend, but it was no illegal trick to use Royce's Gi against him. You must consider Royce uses his Gi to choke his opponents out. Not to mention Royce made all the rules for this fight and Saku accepted and beat him at his own game.

Let's also not forget in the rematch Royce also tested positive for steroids and was suspended for the remainder of his fight license.

  • Gracie did a great job of expanding the sport of MMA. I competed international Judo and TKD. Then Greco roman for about 9 years while remaining active in KFu, WChung and various arts. Over the past years I have been training in BJJ and Thai. All in all my opinion is that no single art is better than another. I will say that Judo is the most complete Art. Most people dont know that once you move up into higher Dans Judo changes into aggressive grappling, submission and striking. A complete MMA

  • FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!!!

  • Gracies can't strike for shit, Sakurama has a descent strike game and a descent ground game. BJJ won't beat MMA.

  • BJJ is a single art form, MMA is MIXED MARTIAL ARTS, of course MMA is going to win.

  • I love watching Gracies get their faces pounded in. You can tweek elbows, wrists, knees, and choke someone to win a fight. Yet nothing says ASSKICKING like beating someone into submision. Especially a ego inflated Gracie. Great post. Thanks

  • He made royce look like a rookie.

  • And then Sakuraba was stoped by Vovchanchyn, and then Vovchanchyn was stop by Coleman. I miss pride

  • 90 minute fight!!

  • I wish they had more epic entrances like this in the U.S.

  • They won't the last time was pride in 2007 in the states.

  • That was badass

  • wow he fights like an american soldier aggressive hes not a grabber but hes a wrestler so weird

he takes his shot and lets him get up unlike most just holding one position for like 3 minutes until the guy falls alseep

  • u need bjj but u definately need wrestling

u know when the last submission in a ufc main event was?

penn vs florian way back in 101 and that was penn the best bjj guy in mma

before that it was 82 when silva fought hendo

shit just doesnt work at the top anymore

  • Proof of wrestling's dominance over bjj and of the Gracie-farce. Sakuraba is a legend!

  • Gracie Farce? Are you serious? The man was fighting Sakuraba, that's no light weight. You need to overcome your bias and learn to appreciate talent.

  • 1:54 lol Sakuraba is such a legend

  • is it me or does Sakuraba's style look kinda like Fedor...........especially around 2:00 onward the way he dodges takedowns and follows punches.

  • I suppose they do have some similarities, they both have unique and hard to place fighting styles.

  • wow the wrestler gone mas in the final rounds...good !!! like a wild dog

  • I've always loved seeing Royce Gracie lose, dirty little shit, especially while using his cheater's third arm.

    Bwaaaaaah-haaa-haaaahhh-hhaaaaaaaa...

  • Say what you want, but Sakuraba tapped. Royce should have put him to sleep instead of doing the right thing. Sakuraba is still one of the greatest fighters in history

  • @vgatell

    Sakuraba don't tap.

  • He tapped and he should have been man enough to admit it. Honor is honor. Watch the video again. He either tapped or he was giving him a love tap, give me a break!

  • @vgatell

Honor is honor, but this was not a clear tap, just a little movement: he don' slap 3 times and strongly.

It's questionable, but referee think so.

And Sakuraba won over all Gracie.

    This is fact.

  • But he tapped, sucks, I know cause of your bias, but he tapped. In either case, he is still a great fighter, so is Royce

  • wrestling vs bjj is a good match but i just hate when bjj guy throw them selfs back it's anoying..muay thai n wrestling put together is amazing ... [|8{D>

  • what you all seem to miss is that sakuraba tapped in the third round due to guillotine choke. And GSP is a black belt in bjj btw. I think they are both great sports. I wrestled in high school and do bjj now. I can dominate a pure wrestler even a national champion wrestler i rolled with if they have no idea about submissions. Once they learn some submissions things get harder of course. All in all a wrestler must learn BJJ atleast a little before he can survive in this type of fight.

  • @blindside1981 yeah people get retarded when they try to compare the two styles and they start talking shit on one another, wrestling and bjj should go hand in hand, i started out with bjj, and im currently going back and working with some wrestling teams to become more well rounded, if i was smart i woulda did it the other way around, haha

  • But doesn't catch wrestling already have a lot of ground fighting/submission???

  • @blindside1981

    Sakuraba is a Pro wrestler.

Old Catch wrestling and Puroresu .

In serious pro wrestling you can see great submissions.

In fact Helio Gracie was ALSO a Catch wrestler: BJJ is basically a mix of traditional Ju-jitsu and old style pro wrestling.

    (i practiced both)

  • Ken Shamrock was a Catch Wrestler in the first UFC, and we all saw how that turned out. Obviously Catch Wrestling without bjj knowledge doesn't stand a chance. Its still a good fighting style but you must crosstrain

  • Shamrock was Catch wrestler, Shoot wrestler and Pro wrestler.

    He is 0% BJJ.

On the other hand, BJJ is a mix of Catch wrestling and jujitsu.

Helio Gracie invented this art, after he lost a match vs Catch wrestler 8when he was young).

BJJ is good, catch wrestling is better.

After all Jujitsu and BJJ lost 80% of time vs Catch, Shoot , Freestyle and Pro wrestling.

  • We sooooo need a rubber match

  • not really neccessary. Saku dominated this one and the second Royce tainted his career with the steroids.

  • Yeah but I wanna see Saku kick his ass again.

  • YEAH WRESTLING FOR LIFE!

At my gym I waste the BJJ guys.

    Nothing beats pure human sport.

  • @MustardCuttah thats funny i dont beleive that for a second

  • @TheMMAmontages

Believe what you want? In Gi I get killed, but Grappling (ie: no gi) I do better than most people.

  • The Gracies once said that their hardest opponents were wrestlers...both great arts...its impossible to say which is better tho because there will always be someone better...i am a wrestler and i give even the more advanced jiu jitsu students a hard time

  • How did Dan Severn do against little ol Royce Gracie? Just sayin. You may give Jits guys a hard time but thats because your obviously cross training to some extent. Little or small. If you as a wrestler, with no knowledge of bjj came into a fight against a good Bjj guy you would probably get caught.

  • you obviously dont know wrestling, ive sparred against good bjj guys with no knowledge of bjj, and won...because i have a strong base, and a hard head, and never rush into anything...now i have been training in bjj and am even more dangerous than b4 (not to toot my own horn) its a 50-50 on this one, can go either way

  • wrestling is better just look at brock lesner and gsp

  • look at frank mir and bj penn. i know that they both lost to who ur talking about but i dont think its because they are wrestlers. i think both wrestling and bjj are preeetty even just different. everyones gonnaa beat someone

  • Royce is a LEGEND

    Respect him....

  • People seem to forget that saku lso trained in bjj and catch wrestling .

  • The sad thing is that it's Pro Wrestling VS. Gracie Jiu Jitsu.

I train at Gracie Jiu Jitsu... should I quit and take up Pro Wrestling, instead? :D

  • This is crazy ive never seen this fight and actually quite funny cause traditional arts when there good can defend well against wrestlers but some of the traditional arts this is my opion hold no chance against bjj. Makes me think why is this? I think becuse bjj is a progressive art that holds you in place and wrestling has good takedown defence so in effect a wrestler has the skills to defend against takedown but lots of tradition cannot defend on the ground. Key do not go to the ground.

  • what a mess !

  • That was action packed!

  • true, but either is lying on your back trying to set up a submission .

  • Wow, looks like Gracie finally met his match.

  • he beat him in the rematch

  • yes and Royce was pomptly suspended and lost his purse for testing positive for steroids in the 2nd match.

  • none the less, he beat him ;)

  • i suppose cheating to win could be considered a victory to some. though from what the Gracie's have preached it's not a true victory.

  • only with the aid of steroids.

  • Hi, what I was saying 'no' to was your earlier comment that 'you're seeing two jiu-jitsu guys in there to some extent'.. I think that is over-stressing the point, though KS did well to cross-train with Penha. I still think BJJ is one of the best if not the best single martial art. No contest with strike-only styles. But things evolve, grappling plus striking is where its at now. BTW Sorry to hear you lost your teacher, steroids are silly really and for a fighter like Royce should be below him.

  • No, what we are seeing is GJJ vs Japanese wrestling (catch/shoot/freestyle) - The fight speaks for itself, KS is also the stronger striker as evidenced by the fact he can not only avoid the takedowns but also pile on the punishment with strikes. All in all a good job because frankly the egos in GJJ were getting a bit big through the 90's... Its a big shame Royce had to come back with Nandralone in his system for the follow-up bout.

  • Its really simple story, Gracies beat all the stand-up styles for years. Then opponents got wise and used a mixed style - even Gracie Jui-jitsu has its weak areas and these caught up in the end. Nowadays you need to be both a great grappler and a great striker to be the best.

  • Bs all the styles ineffective to bjj is more like it. Do a little research there is always room to improve yourself mind bodie and spirit but lack of understanding is what leads to misinformation. A good mixed martail artist would aviod the takedown and in
