WOW! 2 of some favorite things in my life, RED SONJA and ENNIO MORRICONE'S music! this movie was a fav as a kid and i like listening to this when i read RED SONJA and CONAN lol..yes kinda nerdy i know!
arnie wasn't that good in acting.. but still no one can replace his roles.. no matter how good they are in acting.. no matter how clear their accent is.. how big their muscles are.. no actor can replace him
I don't care what all the haters say. This movie is awesome and the score is incredible. It has a great cast with Arnold and Brigitte alongside Sandahl Bergman, Paul Smith, Ronald Lacey and Pat Roach. Sonja is one sexy as hell warrior chick i'd like to bang.
Well Robert Rodriguez is gonna helm the remake as producer! it could be good with his touch since he made Grindhouse, Sin City, From Dusk Till Dawn, El Mariachi, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, The Faculty and other quality action movies since he's one of the best action directors ever.
While I love Ennio Morricone (one of the best movie composers of all time), his Red Sonja soundtrack isn't as enthralling as Basil Poledouris' full-blown orchestral score for Conan the Barbarian. It might have been because the production was a very low-budget one, or just because Basil Poledouris overdid himself on Conan the Barbarian (It is the best movie soundtrack of the latter half of the 20th century). I like the lead trumpets in Morricone, but it always reminds me of his westerns.
@Simpson654 you know its funny. He can compose a really lovely scores to crappy horrible movies. Take for instance.. his score for ORCA. Its actually very beautiful to here. You can actually feel like your in the setting of the movie (ie, the cold, the ocean, the snow etc) Maybe its just me.
@HoboJoe83 I don't agree... For the lovers of 80's heroïc fantasy, I find it has the adventurous touch, kitsch, humor, nice landscapes and costumes... And the special ambiance of the films from that time...
@tag1989 Well yes, let's be fair! Red Sonya is broadcasted at least once a year. It is a classic like Conan, Flash Gordon or Big trouble in little China...
wasn't red sonja such a terrible script tho? I've always enjoyed the older genre fantasy movies as well, but it's remarkable how badly certain aspects were like. I think and always thought there are enjoyable parts and discredited aspects of everything ...i think the song is named Kalidorian or something, after Arnold's character.
I love these old fantasy movies, they really had something that makes you remember them, while the new one, no matter how great they look, you just sit and enjoy them for 2 hours and then forget all about them...
Why aren't more current movies exploiting the soundtracks like Conan et al did? A lack of comparable composers? or the storylines like any kind of thematic richness?
Just caught the ending on HBO and immediately came to youtube for the last music track. Good Point moviee5, it's very beautiful. Ennio Morricone is my hero.
You have to wait until 2:24 to get a feel for just how good this soundtrack is. Then again at 6:02 the final track is beautiful and haunting. The trumpet there is gorgeous.
What irritates me though in Red Sonja, is the seemingly endless Sonja, Sonja! shouts and the abrupt orchestral stops there. But all in all RS is fuller and more fleshed out than that other sword&sandal score; Hundra. Although that one has its very fine moments as well: Chase and Wartheme and Slaughter in the village.
I never understood why Americans hang on so much to the likes of Poledouris. Mucho decibels, low in melody
Buli0n I know when i was a kid i thought Kalidor was Conan I thought it was a cross over you know like Aliens vs Predator or Street Fighter and Final Fight
does anyone know where to get the whole soundtrack? i am looking for that track (score) where Red & Kalidor fight with there swords and end up breathless!? please let me know?
I don't think there was a soundtrack of this movie. I have a soundtrack called arnold movies i got it almost 15 years ago and that score is ni this CD.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I am a fan fo the movie but I am not impressed with the score, they should have got Basil Poledouris (the composer to the 'Conan' soundtracks) to to the score. becaase of that way the music starts I am expecting Clint Eastwood in a sambrero, not Arnold Schwarzenegger with a broadsword.
I've never seen this movie; all I've seen of this movie is the review by the Nostalgia Critic, and even though he gave it a bad review, it looks kind of good, and the musical score is just great! And besides, it's got the future governor of California and the future wife of Flava Flav, who actually used to be a dignified rapper when he was in Public Enemy. (He still wore a clock-necklace, though.)
worth seeing for brigitte nielsen alone. Physically she was one of the most impressive female specimens ever, (but ended shortly with all the drug abuse and plastic surgery)
Ennio Morricone was downright AWESOME in making the musical scores for such a wonderful but unappreciated movie Red Sonja. My favorite is the musical score in the ending credits named "Love Theme". Additionally, the movie was great. It was meant to be a great family movie.
Can't wait for the new verson who I believe Red Sonja will be played by Rose McGowyn from the old Charmed television show.
The movie was not so good in my opinion. I knew it as "Kalidor", not "Sonja la Rouge". The French distributors were so unsure about the movie's success that they named it after Arnold's character.
Bottomline : No remake of a Conan movie or Red Sonja will ever be the same without Arnold or Bridgette. They made the movies. Arnold is one of the actors that plays a roll that can never be filled.

I don't wanna be offensive, but I'm not looking forward the 2010's movie. The version played by Brigittie Nielsen is, in my opinion, more faithful to Robert E. Agreeing with Kintire, member of the Mongoose website, Red Sonja (1985) happens in a post-Hyborian world - what has more to do with REH than a Vanir-like Hykanian with Hyperborean name, living in the Age of Conan. ;)
Yes, he wrote. It's "The Shadow of the Vulture". Though REH created Red Sonya of Rogatine as a 16th Century's character, the movie with Brigittie Nielsen is more faithful to Howard. Here's the last part of an answer I did, two weeks ago, for lyford3141:

It's pretty obvious, IMO, that "Red Sonja" (1985) portrayed Kalidor as Cimmerian chieftain from the Vilayet's southwestern shores, who came riding across the steppes; Sonja is an Vanir/Aesir-blooded Hyperborean, while Queen Gerden is a Hyperborean without Nordheimr DNA. Prince Tharn is an Hyrkanian remnant at west of Vilayet. Plus, there are no cities in the movie: only castles, rests of castles, villages and ruined cities. The movie happens in the Ice Age, centuries after Conan's Era! ;)
Not true, the origanal "Red Sonja" stories featuered her as Frinch piratess of the Nepolionic era.
The Red Sonja of the movie is based on the Marvel Comics character, who in turn is realy a redress of Howard's character Valeria of the Red Brotherhood.
The original Red Sonya - not "Red Sonja", as in Marvel Comics - belongs to a Howard's tale called "The Shadow of the Vulture", where Sonya is a Russian she-warrior who fought the Suleyman's Turks in Viena at 1529. She was portrayed by REH as sister of Roxelana - this last one, a historical character who became later empress of the Ottoman Empire.
You can find "The Shadow...", with the original Red Sonya, in e-texts availabe at Wikipedia and Gutenberg.
@FNeeser I'd only like to add, that the original Roxolana wasn't Russian, she was Ruthenian ( we would say Ukrainian today ). She was born and raised in Rzeczpospolita, and some historicians have idea, that because of that reason she influenced Suleyman to maintain peace with Polish kings.
As for Red Sonja in the movies, I know she was based on the Marvel's one. What I meant to say 10 months ago is: the movie isn't faithful to the Howard's tale "The Shadow of the Vulture", but it's VERY faithful to Howard's essay "The Hyborian Age". ;)

As for Red Sonja in the movies, I know she was based on the Marvel's one. What I meant to say 10 months ago is: the movie isn't faithful to the Howard's tale "The Shadow of the Vulture", but it's VERY faithful to Howard's essay "The Hyborian Age". ;)

My appoligies, it had been some time scence I read about the origens of Marvle's Red Sonja and mis-remembered the information.
You seem quite well versed in Mr. Howard's works, and as a fan of them, I applaud and salute you.

The only thing that deserved from this movie is Morricone's music: tremendous, especially Calidor's Theme.

I like the idea of Morricone's music for the Conan story, but not necessarily this one. It's a little too light hearted.
