you know this is fiction based off of non fiction. its true that very few canadians held the line of passchendaele by themselves waiting for rienforcements that came way to late. it may have not been a squad but a platoon yes. it is easy to defend a trench oppose to taking one, so few could hold off many. Oh, AND THERE CANADIAN!

Paul Gross is the epitome of Canadian nationalism in acting form. He played an RCMP officer in Due South, a Canada Corps. sargeant in Passchaendale, and an outlaw cowboy in Calgary in Gunless. His acting is really hammy with American levels of patriotic propaganda, but he is definetly a guilty pleasure of mine. I just love seeing a strong, handsome Alberta boy representing this country on the screen.

@Scouragerules Realistically, attacking forces are said to require 3:1 numbers, assuming troop quality is similar, to capture an entrenched enemy position, this was probably even more pronounced back in those days when 'run across thick mud (explaining why the Germans can't hold hand to hand either, they're knackered from the advance) as quickly as possible toward the machine guns' was the favoured tactic to taking a trench. If the Canadians had been attacking, they would have died in droves too

(I'm not a conspiracy theorist) We learn after the WW2 only the perspectiv of the brit historian John Röhl.He say: "Germany have the full blame on the WW1" By the way,this is not historically tenable.But we learn such things.Thats the reason for such films.But now the chilean armyAND the swedish palace guards have the best uniform.

@jaxxx1975 they have casualties, this why they end up to be about ten, and it is about the battle of Passchendaele, which is a true battle, and it is very realistic when you consider Canadians won where anyone else could have won. Ypres in 1915, we hold against the German gas and following assault without gas mask. Vimy in 1917, only the Canadians managed to take the hill, Passchendaele, Canada's Hundred days, where Canadian were the spear launch into Germany's defenses.

Churchill quote: "I decided not understand this sensitivity because of the use of gas, I am sure to use poison gas against uncivilized tribes." sorry I translated the quote from German in english. you mean the Third Battle of Ypres. We won this battle Allied losses of 325,000, only about 260,000 soldiers from the Germans fallen. And the captured allied areas we conquered 1918 back! Senceless wars and battles..

You should ask yourself why German command and soldier were scared every time they heard Canadian Corp, Germans soldiers gave to Canadian Soldier the name "Sturmtrooper"

But in Germany.... sorry but you are conquered with two canadian divisons, under help from two british divisons, and under losses of 16.000 Canadian soldiers tree villages. Your divisons was a Substitute for New Zealanders. The Canadian force was under the control of british a command. On the 10 October started the battle and on the 10 nevember the british comman broke up the failed attack!

Sorry this attack was not so importent, and not really a attack like this scene. 10 Canadian killing all Germans... :-)

@jaxxx1975 There were a lot of Can. soldier casualtie/deaths portrayed in this movie. The German commander in this was very kind&cool.

As unimportant as this bitter victory was, it was actually the most significant victory for the allies that year of war. The Can. Commander knew the battle was worthless-the Germans were fortified on the high ground and it was muddy-but Brit. Gen. Haig forced the advance because the allies needed a symbolic victory. And they did won, but paid a heavy price.

But I forgotten, that canadians are no US-americans who think: What I saw in a film, is reallity. I remember the US 10 part Series Band.of.Brother, they this company killed hundreds of Germans but in the end the company have... what?... 4 or 6 deaths? What the hell? Actually Band of Brothers is viewed from the stories of those that lived for the most part, if you actually watch it again you will see not only at the end of the episodes but half way through several of them (such as when Winters was promoted out of the company) that they were half strength several times (meaning at least 50 men were dead) and that replacements were killed alot too. Not 4-5, iirc it was closer to a hundred+ by the end in the originals and repleacements lost.

@jaxxx1975 It was a campaign of several attack, and only the third and fourth made significant gain, taking the high grounds overlooking Ypres. The battle included Four Canadian division, pushing the german line at every assault and holding it, German troop retook it when it was passed to British troop, and not with Canadian defending it.
