I've seen rush 26 times since 1980 i'm 46 now, every time they are JUST better and better, a different sound, but still true to what they started. and i'll keep going as long as they keep playing live.
I love Neil's drumming in this ... greatest band of all time, sucks so much that i wasnt around back then to see them in this era .. hope they tour again :)
OK, this song is in the SAME KEY as the original recording. It's 1984: Geddy still had all his range intact. The reason for him not shrieking the high notes here, is because one: He was TOLD to stop (he was going to permanently damage his voice), and second: His middle register was far more powerful so he could sing those notes without sounding "thin."
@Gregsynth He never shrieked on the MP tour, he sang cleanly he stopped shrieking because after during the hemisphere's tour he became very good at just singing.
geddy himself said that they preform the temples of syrinx two octaves lower than the studio recording otherwise he'd blow hi svoice halfway through the concert.
I wish i could have seen them back then. It sucks to be a teenager and not grow up with such an amazing band. Ive only seen them once at the last snakes and arrows tour, one of the best nights of my life.
Ahh, 80's fashions and hairstyles. I actually owned those same red Simmons electronic drums. They were absolute junk, but all that was available at the time. I saw this tour actually, my one and only time seeing Rush live.
It has some to do with that. He plays it a whole step down nowadays, (maybe more) making it sound like a Heavy death metal song at the very beginning. :P
haha, they're thinking, "we've played this thing on every f***ing tour since '76. Let's have fun with it, and see how fast we can play." I wouldn't be surprised if that was the truth. You gotta give them a little credit, it must get boring to play the same material at ever show five tours.
yeah...WTF?? THis was from 1984, which was only eight years after the 2112 studio version and Geddy has already lost his high vocal range..I don't get it
Hmm... anyone know what this song is about??? Syrinx is as far as I know a nymph in greek mythology, but Iv never herd of any temple in her name... Any idés are welcome!
the "temple of syrinx" is just a sci-fi metaphor for an authoritarian communist society. the song is basically a very anti-communist message, it's pretty evident from the lyrics.
dispite the clothes and steinberger the playing @ this gig is crushing. watch the whole concert and see. of note is: weapon, vital and new world (specially the ending. tight as shit)

A "Syrinx" is the vocal in a bird that allows it to sing/chirp if that helps.
