press alt/option+backspace to fill with foreground colour,
press ctrl/cmd+backspace to fill with background colour.

just press Q on your keyboard.
alternatively, in CS4, quickmask is the very bottom icon in the toolbar.
Pressing Q doesn't get me to mask mode. And there's no quick mask Icon under the toolbar. I do not know how to use this CS6.
there is no version of photoshop called CS6.
i have no idea what program you are using.
My bad. I'm using Photoshop Elements 6.0
