  • very patriotic, great scenery and music. dvd release NOW.

  • I remember going to see this and the movie called To Catch the sun ! both of these movies were great at ontario place cinesphere! back in the 1970's, great times!.

  • Such an uplifting film. I have fond memories of seeing it at the Ontario Place Cinesphere back in the 70s as a youngster. And 'Ojibway Country' - such a fab song! Such innocent and care-free times...sigh.

  • Is that Sleeping Giant and is the town in the film Thunder Bay?

  • I was fortunate enough to be working on a National Film Board project in Thunder Bay when NORTH OF SUPERIOR was being shot. Graeme and his crew shared facilities with us, so we had a ringside seat to watch it being made. At that time, there were only two IMAX cameras in the world. So, when one of them (strapped to a canoe shooting rapids) went into the drink, there was panic! Luckily, it was undamaged. And the production manager flew to the labs in LA with the film in a canister on his lap.

  • I have looked for this music for 39 years since I first saw it in Ontario Place in 1971. What a home-coming. Rosy

  • Unfortunately I have tried all over the place including e-bay and the IMAX people themselves to see if North of Superior will ever be out on DVD or Blu-Ray. Seems like the answer is NO at least for the foreseeable future. That is a shame because I would love to add this to my collection.

  • @ChristopherTen1 I don't know if these old IMAX films will ever come to Blu Ray. They are Government of Ontario productions. You could try bombarding the Cinesphere people with emails or phone calls with recommendations that they try to get these on Blu Ray and sell them at their concession stand. The guy introducing this film and Catch The Sun said they were two of the most requested films, that's why they played them this summer.

  • Please post any info on where this and _Catch the Sun_ can be found. Mydad used to take me to the Ontario Place Cinesphere every time these were shown. Wow! It really is almost 40 years!

  • does anyone have clips from the follow up movie Catch the

    Sun?

  • Saw it when it first came out and saw it many, many times afterward when I worked at Ontario Place during the summer.

There was a lunch room for employees under the Cinesphere seats and after having lunch I'd go out to the edge of seats just to hear the audience reaction when the image blows up to full screen and again when the plane banks down the other side of the cliff.

    Great times.

  • @OurChildhoodsEnd That's my favourite part! What an intro to the IMAX format, it starts off looking like some crappy TV screen image, then it explodes into a several story video image, loud music pounding at your brain. I can imagine how scary it was for people. It sort of reminds me of the last part of 2001: A Space Odyssey, without the crazy colours.

  • I first saw "North Of Superior" in May of 1971 the first day Ontario Place in Toronto opened. I am still as amazed viewing this cinematic gem as I was the first time. IMAX FOREVER !

  • I remember seeing this as a child at the Cinesphere in Ontario Place and being blown away by the opening moments when the small traditional screen size used for the title explodes into full IMAX glory with the insistent drums. It was for me a "cinemagic" moment for me. Thank you for bringing back the memory of this wonderful film.

  • Sure takes me back....Glad you posted this rare gem, I used to rent a 16mm copy from Mississauga library and miss viewing this copy even though it was such terrible shape, I can only hope that it gets remastered and refurbished to preserve the very first imax film ever produced...

  • @northofsuperior40 If you had a chance to check it out at the Cinesphere this summer, they're still playing it. Check their schedule. And it looks effin' unbelievably clear and colorful, like it was filmed yesterday. They've taken great care to preserve this grandaddy of IMAX films.

  • Thank you so much for uploading the movie. I saw it last Saturday during Ontario Science Centre`s 40th birthday and I was hoping to find it and show it to my friends. It`s beautiful.

  • At just about 1:24, you really just about fell off your seat! Hard to believe this is almost 40 years old.

  • Does anyone know if this film is available on DVD? Or any format?

  • @mikecf98 Unfortunately I also have looked for years for this but alas to no luck. I have even tried ebay and IMAX. I would love to add it to my collection of blu-ray. There are many other IMAX features available but in my opinion nothing comes close to this one.

  • Yes, I also agree that this is the best IMAX movie they made, and I've seen quite a few of them over the years. And the song really takes me back. Love it! Even on the small screen, it's still fantastic.

  • Thank you! Words cannot express my appreciation for posting this! The reissue of this film on DVD is long overdue. I too saw this film when Ontario Place opened, and several times since then.

  • Sigh...I have looked for a copy of this in any for for years! I saw it when Ontario Place opened in 1971 too...and it was electrifying. I remember running back up those silly ramps at the Cinesphere to get back in for the next showing!

  • I found the answer to my own question: to long to post lyrics though

    Ojibway Country by Bill Houston

  • Great film, but the featured song is great too. ANyone know the name of the song?

  • Anyone who saw this in IMAX in the 70's will never forget this. Thx for sharing this.

  • Thank you for reminding us of this outstanding film. I remember being utterly mezmerized by it's beauty and imagery. It was so hauntingly beautiful and has stuck with me since I saw it for the first time all those years ago.

I am grateful that someone very nice was kind enough to send this my way.

    xx

  • My mom grew up watching this movie several times and still loves it. It's a great movie, but the quality could be better.

  • Still the best IMAX movie ever made. It's a shame they're going digital these days, this movie really showed the technology's potential.

  • this takes me back. my mom and dad took me to ontario place when I was 11 in 1971. very good movie!

  • first saw this when it was new at ontario place, loved it then and love it now, it was fantastic in the theatre but it's still great to see it now, i have been in the uk for 2 years and it made me very homesick
