  • lol you should definitely do another video like this with no in-video description, let the viewers guess which is which so they can stop blabbling on which is better and let their true thoughts come out...haha

  • Modeling gets very similar sound nowadays, but it still doesn't feel the same... that's my main reason for staying with tubes

  • Are all the settings the same on this? I've heard much nastier things out of the 6505 then that! the impulse is meh and the axe fx... ITS A FUCKING AXE FX \m/ :D

  • What's this Revalver 6505? Never heard of it, is it for guitar rig?

  • @FMGProductions100

The software is called Peavey Revalver, it's a plugin very similar to Guitar Rig but made by Peavey.

  • @FMGProductions100 The Revalver is an amp modeling program used as a plugin for sequencers such as FL studio or Cubase. It's very similar to Guitar Rig and Amplitube, but it's made by Peavey and is better than Guitar Rig.

  • Axe FX, takes it, followed by the Revalver, interestingly enough.

  • Comment removed

  • @Hellraiserzzz Oh did it? I wouldn't have guessed considering IT'S THE REAL AMP. derp.

  • @guitarramaniacx That all boils down to personal preference. If you like the Axe Fx over the real deal, you'll have a hell of a tool in your hands if you pick one up. I just personally dig the simplicity of the real deal tube rig. Guitar -> Power conditioner -> OD/Delay/Noise Gate -> 6505 or Roadster(whichever one i'm hooked up to at the moment) -> Cab. The axe has too many parameters to tweak for me. >.>

  • Would have died laughing if Peavey's sim of their own amp sounded nothing like it.

  • AXE is awensome, but not as good as real

  • All of them sounded good. I just liked the girth of the Fractal 5150 model a bit more. Very cool.

  • @guitarramaniacx yeah, I agree, and I own a real one aswell.

  • The Fractal sounds amazing,it's got so much depth and openness. Thanks for this comparison dude.

  • Axe FX kills it

  • @guitarramaniacx No...we don't hate you...we agree. Plus no need a for a noise gate so as to avoid inner ear implosion.

  • @guitarramaniacx

The point of using real amps is the versatility when placing mics. In this demo he's using a single SM57 to mic the cabinet. Now place one mic on the back of the cab and an ambient mic, that would make the difference.

An Axe FX is nice for a live situation: light weight, all in a box and plug it in the PA. Trivium guitar players use AXE Fx live, but they recorded the album with a 6505+Mesa Cabs...

  • axe fx sounds really muddy.

  • @guitarramaniacx you re right also get the power of amps on the palm of your hand...and peavey is too cheap, who have the money to pay for a mesa anyway....

  • the fractal sounds way better!

  • didn't like it for awhile there because not very many people could dial it in very well.. after seeing it live a few times. its very convenient for those pesky tours lol i love tube tone more than anything but i would love one of these for shows.

  • Fractal is fkin amazing!

  • @guitarramaniacx Try the real thing vs axe fx in a band setting with really high volume. Then you know that real thing is.... the real thing ;)

  • lmao damn the revalver sounds almost the same as the axe fx. Maybe because it's made by a company who actually makes amps, and took the time to simulate powertubes. Unlike other companies.

  • Are you in the lead, or rhythm channel?

  • i own a 5150 and i'm proud of it, but i never use it for recording because modeling just sounds better.

of course it doesn't sound THE SAME, but i consider amp modelers amazing tools to create your own sounds by having insane amounts of amps/cabs/effects available, if all you're doing is trying to emulate a certain sound then you'll surely be disappointed because it's impossible to exactly replicate the real thing. it is however VERY possible to improve on it. btw i liked the axe-fx the most!

  • I actually like the Axe Fx the most...haha

  • fractal.

  • for my taste:

    1. axe

    2. amp

    3. revalver

    pretty close battle tho

  • hey man could share the presets of revalver?very nice sound

  • Hi Ola, this 3 kind of amp sound impressive. Did you used the settings of the picture shown in the video? because i have the same amp, cabinet, microphone and pc but i can't get a sound almost similar to your tone. thanks a lot for your helpul videos

  • 1. real thing, the harmonics just flow naturally

    2. axe fx

    3. revalver, the top end fizz flows too fast making it sound unnatural

  • tones were very sketchy needs to be cleaned up a bit

  • @BreeBree1731 parkway drive use the 6505 so of course it is aha

  • Axe Fx sound the best xD

  • Do you think the 6505 is heavy enough to play Parkway Drive and things like that? Or is the 6505+ really needed?

    Thanks, and nice videos Ola!!!

  • @BreeBree1731 the 6505+ isn't heavier, it has just an idependent eq for the clean channel... and you'll never use all gain available on a 6505, the result would be 30 seconds sustain while palm muting!

  • the axe kills it, like always! can't wait to get it

  • hmmm.. the digital pre-amp with dual processors frem axe fx can simulate the hi-clarity like a reel tube amp. geez.. mostly digital pre-amp produce more hi-noise, while opening the presence er even put the high freq above 12 0'clock.

  • Haha it's funny I think the Axe FX 5150 sounds better than the real thing!

  • @Junnage haha same here

  • the actual 6505 sounds way better, more balls and bite

  • I'm impressed at how far sim software has come, that's why I favorited this to watch later with headphones (I'm at work on a friend's I-pad) but I can't pick convenience over tone when I'm recording a song I worked hard on. I'll set up whatever amps/cabs/mics necessary to capture the real sound, and touch-sensitivity can't be emulated perfectly. I record my low-watt amps & solid pine cabs. On stage, a 6505 stack is unbeatable, but I play small clubs so 2 4x12s and 120 watts un-mic'ed is plenty.

  • @AdamRainStopper listen through studio headphones and you hear the difference like night and day.

  • @metallica5252 I do. I have a smaller "studio" (<50 sq. feet in the corner of my bedroom) than most recording artists, and yet I own ZERO amp-modeling software or hardware (unless you count my vox amplug) yet don't even use solid state PEDALS. My clean-boost comes from a Seymour Duncan Twin Tube Classic (100% all-tube audio path) and my reverb comes from putting a mic on the ceiling at the other side of the room. I am obsessive about tone, Tele-amp-cab-mic, that's it. Check my uploads (please).

  • @AdamRainStopper yet most of what you said can be emulated easily with the axe-fx, if not the axe-fx II that's already out but on waiting list atm.

  • @metallica5252 Key word there is "emulated", kinda like JFET based overdrive pedals "emulate" the sound of overdriven tubes, but it isn't the same as having an all-tube signal path from the passive pickups on your guitar to the speaker, and I build solid wood 1x12 cabs that when properly mic'ed come out sounding like stacks on tape. Software and digital interfaces don't respond to and interact with your instrument and your playing the way tube amps and loudspeakers in good cabinets do.

  • @AdamRainStopper power amp + axe-fx ultra II + really good cab with V30s > any tube amp on the market.

  • @metallica5252 Not for me. If I play the same thing through the real Marshall and the emulated version, you might not notice a big difference sitting in the room with me, but I will absolutely notice a difference in "feel". To me it's more interaction than "feel", and a tube preamp is intuitive. Even with the hybrid bass amp (3 12AX7s in the pre, FET pwr) I used in my band, the difference was the immediate reaction to my every strum. With emulation I missed it bad. I need the live interaction.

  • Even guys with roadies and bucks like Meshuggah use Axe FX live.

And they where using Line6 before ;)

Because it is easier to use a rack than a miked amp.

In the 80/90, it was "fancy" to got a wall of Marshall amps...even if they were empty apart the only one miked ;)

    This is over.

And when you use axe FX, you don't use a real amp.You use it in a computer soundcard for recording or directly in a PA.Using it in a real amp defeat the purpose of the integrated convolution cab sim :D

    Nice test :D

  • Ola, dude, I want you to make impulses, your experience fucking kills every one of those shitheads at Line 6 who can't make an impulse or model worth Bosse poo.

  • Revalver is better than axe fx

  • Ola fucking rocks! Thanks again for all of the killer amp demos. You have helped me immensely on my research to make an educated amp purchase.

  • axe fx is cool and all. believe it or not fearedse, you're the reason i bought a mesa dual rec. but seriously people. its 2200 for the axe. plus the power amp .why buy something thats TRYING to emmulate the sound of a tube amp? when you can by a half stalk between 1800 to 3000 bucks? the peavey is 1800 :) they all sound nice, and its a personal preference, but tube all the way :)

  • @peoplesnyukka3 cool man glad I could help you with a decision! The dual rectifier slays!

  • @peoplesnyukka3 Because in a studio environment the Axe-Fx is better.... no mic'ing etc to achieve something endlessly more versatile and subjectively better in tone.

  • @peoplesnyukka3 - I agree with you man; I like the tones from Axe Fx and even the HD500; however, they 'almost' sound like the amp they're trying to emulate. I would rather these companies create original tones for their units as opposed to trying to sound like something else, if that makes sense. I do believe that whatever Ola plays through is gonna sound amazing because he's just an awesome musician!

  • @peoplesnyukka3 except it's much easier for gigging musicians. It's also easier to record, you're also getting tons of amp sims, not just mesa dual recto and not a lot of people can really crank the amp all the way up. Sure, if you have a treated room, have the recording equipment and you can play for hours on high volume with no issues - tube wins. In virtually every other case modeling is the way to go.

  • @peoplesnyukka3 well what if you don't have the ability to crank that amp without getting the cops involved or want to have various amps other than one tube amp or don't have the need for large decibels of volume? That's why I got an Axe FX. Besides, if I wanted to go live I'd buy a tube amp and either run it directly to the cab (because tube amps are awesome no doubt there) or use it as a power amp for the Axe Fx either way. seems win/win for me :P

  • @peoplesnyukka3 Yeah, I used to think of it that way, but you have to remember that the Axe FX isn't just trying to emulate tube amps, or just one tube amp. It also does all kinds of effects, can be used for recording, does any type of amp, so for a lot of players, its why buy a single tube amp when for the same price I can have virtually every amp? Its all personal preference. And yes, I love my tube amp!

  • @peoplesnyukka3 I think one thing that entices people to buy the axe fx is the programmability of it, the various patches with choosable buiklt in effects at the press of one button

  • @peoplesnyukka3 Actually, the Peavey 6505 is even cheaper nowadays! In Europe, you can get it for roughly 1050 euro's.

  • @ExceriusGuitar lol i'm sorry it was a typo xD i was talking peavey but i meant mesa haha i like the axe fx for sure but its somethin about a tube amp that latches on to me :)

  • @ExceriusGuitar nevermind i was talking about peavey haha 1200 for the peavey i dunno why i'm so confused!! haha

  • @peoplesnyukka3 just sayin, accurate models of soo many amps and effects for 2200, i think can be considered a steal ;)

  • @peoplesnyukka3 I agree totally that it is always better to have the sound and feel of the real thing, and I record with nothing but. Even for bass I will rarely record direct, and my bass amp is loud and the 15" black widow is difficult to mic without overloading, etc. One thing though, I do understand why metal players especially gravitate toward this newer, more accurate emulation, because it isn't merely emulating a tube amp, it's emulating many amps in a single rack unit.

  • @peoplesnyukka3 I agree man! But, I think the purpose of the Axe is not just to "emulate" the sound of a tube amp. It does so much more! It has as many effects as you can possibly imagine! In a way, it's sort of an all in one convenience, jack of all trades, digital system for the studio or performer who doesn't like a crap ton of equipment to lug around and sort out. Just my 2 cents on the Axe, but I agree though. Tubes all the way! :)

  • @peoplesnyukka3 I guess nowadays softwares are not far from being able to simulate the warmth of a tube. And the Axe-FX is the non plus ultra when it comes to flexibility in one device. i guess that'll be the main reason to buy one or not, but youre right, if you got money to pay the energy bills, then tube all the way :p

  • @peoplesnyukka3 yes but the dual rectifier cant sound like and Uberschal or a 6505 or a fireball etc... you see where i'm going with this? the axefx is for people who want a plethora of tones not just stuck with one amp sound

  • @peoplesnyukka3 Because the axe fx models 70 times the amount of shit you can get with a dual rec.

  • @peoplesnyukka3 Υου are halpf right.Axe-fx emulates not one tube amp but many and its not only trying but gets really close(you think you can spot the difference on a recording or...blindfolded?dont bet your life on it.).So not only you get many amps but also high quality effects and a bunch of other goodies. For what is offers you pay way too little.Myself though i have no use for either the axe-fx or a real tube amp.Υοu can get great sounds even with just free vsts nowadays.

  • @peoplesnyukka3 Because if you have the Axe FX then you can also record at home without having to mic a cab (for those of us who live in an flat or with nagging family members/neighbours)

  • @ferociouspokemachine exactly, I love my tube amp, but the axe fx is so tempting because it is so convenient. hell, even live, it is more convenient, direct out to hte PA and not have to have a cab? Yes please!

  • I agree they sound really similar recorded, but imo the real thing sounds sooooo much better when you're sitting in front of the cab playing.

  • who won? who's next? YOU DECIDE!

  • Sm57 is good, but doesnt get the bass response. With a second mic the real amp would shine.

  • Axe Fx Won

  • Give X50 a try.

  • dude... totally love everything you put out! flawless playing and always awesome sounds! good job!

  • Impulse There is ?

  • After much experimenting with VST virtual amps, I have to say that LePoulin blows everyone else away, even ReValver. OK, maybe not the Axe FX. But I used to use ReValver all the time but LePou algorithms just seem much more authentic. Best of all, LePou is FREE! Try his Lecto amp through high end monitors and you will be blown away.

  • I dig the Axe!!!

  • Well, if I built my gig rack, I'd definitely choose Axe Fx. Starting earning money to buy it. Awesome thing

  • Well... I feel like a shit, because I really think ReValver sounds the best and real 6505 sounds the worst - too much highs and sound is not tight at all. Axe Fx is great too, but I think that it isn't equalized well, but overall it sounds badass

  • 6505>axe>revalver. I have had a bunch of this stuff and played on a bunch of this stuff and the software stuff is amazing don't get me wrong but just nothing seems to beat plugging into a head and just rocking the fuck out.

  • 6505 > Revalver > Axe, imo

  • @ferociouspokemachine PFFFFFFF

  • @galatonim PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF :D

  • I say the axe sounds the best..

  • i'm thinking of getting revalver. I'm totally a nooby when it comes to this though. what do i need to run revalver besides a computer? probably some type of audio interface? is it best to run the line out into monitors or an actual guitar cab for live sound?

    someone help!

  • The difference is not SO HUGE. The real 6505 sounds better and clearer, (specially in the mute palms). The Axe sounds nice, but not so clearer like the real 6505. Revalver sounds great for just to be a simple software, is not so clear like the real 6505 but the sound is similar and very decent. So for the price is a great deal if you don't have the money for the real amp.

    Axe - $2000 bux

    Peavey 6505 - $1000 bux

    Revalver - $250 bux

  • Are these all single tracked?

  • @15viceandvirtues Double tracked.

  • Hey Ola, is it possible to post that preset for us Axe users to download? Thanks mate, great tone as always!!!

  • Im impressed, this demonstrates how good amp simulators really are currently, of course they are progressing too. I look forward to the future when maybe emulators will be desirable than the real deal!

  • HEY who thinks ola should make us impulses, you should mic a mesa cab with 2 sm57s for us and make accouple impulses man

  • @decapitatedrathead Believe me I've tried, but they always come out sounding like shit. But I'm going to give it another try some day.

  • Comment removed

  • @fearedse Ever hear of\try REDWIREZ impulses?? shits a muddy diarrhea dump all over Recabinet.

  • @decapitatedrathead donate to his site before you deman that, dude. be greatful he's giving us these awesome videos in the first place.

  • revalver sounded best to me

  • Impressed with the Revalver clip

  • Let's not forget he had a maxon in front of the real thing. All of em were pretty close but you just can't beat the real deal

  • dudeeeeeeeeee the axe fx sounds killer and a lot of people prefer the sound of it BUT the tube sound is heaven and theres no digital amps sims etc that emulate at 100 % i stay with the real thing

  • I'm surprised, the Axe sounded so incredibly close to the real thing. It had a little more mids and not as much sizzle though.

  • Comment removed

  • whoa go revalver, awesome

  • cool post, thanks!

  • AXE

  • my opinion: 6505>axe fx>revalver

  • Please do an Axe FX II demo!!!

  • hey ola! nice comparison! I loved the tone you got from the axefx... which mic did you use with the stock v30 cab? was it the 57 dyn?

  • This is exactly why I love using Revalver.

  • They all sound really sick, but in my opinion, soundwise, the 6505 is the most natural sounding. The revalver sounds almost identical except it sounds a little more compressed if that's a good way to put it. Like it doesn't have as much bottom end. Pretty much the same for Axe fx except the axe fx sounds like it has more gain saturation and it's a bit louder too.

  • there is nothing better than a real amp but damn that axe fx sounds killer

  • i think the revalver..

  • I was amazed that Revalver sounded so good

  • Axe-FX is there! :-o

How U feel about it? would you record an entire album with Axe-fx?

  • Actual 6505 was the best, closely followed by the Axe-FX.

  • This is the best axe fx vs. real amp demo I've heard. Usually the axe has some weird ass presence going on. Firmware 11 FTW?

  • great video man all 3 sound really good i already bought greg tomaos impulses

  • For me, the real 6505 wins by far, just because is the real deal, with an axe-fx or revalver you need impulses to get good sounds.

  • @themaggot8

well, the peavey head alone won't make much noise either. You still need some cabinet. Basicly that's where impulses come in.

  • a comparision between the "dr boogie" and the real dual rectifier please!! :) @fearedse

  • i like the peavey 6505 the best.

  • Ola, info on the 5150 patch? Pretty please with sprinkles on top?

  • can we have the axe-fx patch please

  • Ola, what were your settings on the 808?

  • As much as some Axe FX don't sound exactly like the factory production amps they're modeled after, I'd rather buy 1 Axe FX then 10 thousand other amps. The question is though, are you gonna try and get your hands on the new Egnator Armageddon? I need to move to Sweden, there seems to be more Metal heads!

  • Its nice to see that Revalver can mostly model the real one :) Btw Ola, what kind of EQ'ings have you done (pre or post) and is this only the raw played version or is there any final process with like Ozone 4 or something else?

  • They all sound really close, especially the first two

  • LOVE the Axe-FX tone!!!!!!

Any chance for a sysx patch? PLZZZZ

  • I agree with Levi!! And no they don't sound the same... Develop this thing called an ear ;)

  • wow they all sound the same??? No more lugging amps around the stage lol

  • The Axe-FX sounds best. Wtf.

  • Dude,,, this kills!!!! From one tone freak to another, I appreciate this. You truly understand the concept of TONE!! I prefer the tone of the actual 6505. Gotta' say though, the revalver runs a close second. Very convincing impulse man.

  • The axe fx definitely has a scratches to it, because it is solid state, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing, I think it makes it tighter and easier to play on.

  • Dat Axe FX

  • i actually think the Axe-FX sounds better than the revalved one!

  • i agree. the axe fx does sound a lot crunchier and just overall has more bite to it, but i don't know. i can't put my finger on it, but there's something it had that the revalver didn't that put me off a bit.

i'm leaning towards the revalver, but the axe fx did sound nice.

  • I personally prefer neutral-to-brighter sounding pickups (this includes most stock PUs also) and a mildly dark sounding amp especially with overdrive... so for it's the 6505 here with 808od ... this is all subjective of course.

  • I scrolled down so I wouldn't see the video. Just so my answer wouldn't be biased and I wouldn't know what is what.

They were all pretty similar and decent-sounding. Second one was a little brighter than the first but sounded the most digital. Last one was a bit darker.

I liked the first and last pretty equally, leaning towards the last. The Revalver one was still pretty good.

    Go figure. xD

  • hey ola, can you give me good songs on drop d?

  • @nikitofin Anything by Creed.

No seriously, Tremonti has killer tone.

    Also all the Tool songs

  • Wow. Axe FX sounded really good ..again..

I wonder what the new AXE will sound like O_O :D

  • Very surprised by the Revalver. You are a metal tone king.

  • Ola, how do you set the Apogee input instrument level in Axe-fx? around 15?

  • Clearly the axe-fx :)

  • they all sound unreal but axefx has some quality just just cockslapped me round the cheeks

  • can u do a video of a 6505 and mesa dual rectifier comparison? it'll help a lot

  • the biggest difference in real life would do the actual cabinet. changing a real 4X12 below a 6505 and trying various cabs would provide bigger differences just by itself and push the final sound to different areas .anyway, you definitely do a greaaat bunch of work but I find all your samples and vids to sound so much alike that even real tube amps sound the same in your YT videos. (the same good i mean)it must be the way you approach the actual recording and post production.. but i still dig it

  • The axe fx seems to have a static drone underneath the whole recording. I think all the sounds are usable. I sincerely hope we reach a point in recording where it doesn't matter. I prefer software.

  • can u post the axe fx patch on your website? sounds killer

  • the real 6505 sound can change, due to the cabinet, to the position of the microphone, the microphone, the cables.....i prefer the real 6505

  • Do you plan on getting the axe fx 2 when they start shipping?

  • the REAL Peavey 6505 sounds like beautiful tickling assault on your ears! you cant trick a human beings ears sorry! emulation is decent for getting there fast but not true. axe-fx was somewhere between both of them.

  • thanks!!!!

  • It's official - Fractal Audio uses magic Elves to craft their AxeFX. That's the only explanation.

  • The real amp sounds best, much better high end, no digital strangeness. The low end is nicer too, it's got that tube squishiness (haha) to it.

Still, the axefx is very convincing.

  • AxeFx wins hands down...

  • Wonder is Ola will do an Axe-Fx vs. Axe-Fx II comparison?

  • WTF ? The digital Axe-FX actually sounds better than the real deal ? :|

  • AXF-FX ist the best 6505!

  • fearedse, was wondering how much panning was set for this track was it hard left and right or 75 75 or 50 50? jw

  • @vampreen12356 full panning

  • @fearedse Hey blondie..Are you gonna get sucked into the Axe-II now?

  • What are impulses?

  • are there any maxon pedals dealers in europe?..

  • @theclovek Thomann . de

  • @BorisDono thx man :)
