Okay maybe I was wrong about when I said they "wouldn't have done shit", but it would of taken them much longer. The west assumed that the Russians were miles behind them in terms of technology. Sputnik proved them wrong and made the U.S. get serious. Also, the Yanks had a LOT of the German rocket scientists. They tried building from the German designs but couldn't make it work. They had to get the German scientists to actually build the rockets.

When you look at the houses Soviets lived in and compare them to say, those of the UK or West Germany, which would you rather live in? Not the Soviet one. Education, it was more like re-education. Food? Look up the Ukrainian famine. The USSR may be better then Russia is today, but in all ways Western Europe and the non-European Western nations where better.

They only signed a cease fire so we can say "no one won" , and when you said US you win the cold war against the USSR I think the "model" (capitalism) won over the communist, but not over the country itself.
