Bamforth hastily filmed a copy with the train shots on either end of the kissing scene attached in December 1899.

As I understand this device, it is a rear projection of a long strip of film slides of more than 500 drawings. The background is projected separately.

According to Wiki, this is one of the very first examples of different scenes (exterior, interior) being intercut to indicate continuous action: something that we take for granted now but isn't necessarily intuitive (very small kids have to learn it). This was the earliest days of cinema and the "rules" were not written yet. It's also a POV (point of view) shot of the train going into the tunnel which is unusual.
