Awesome video, well explained. My first pheasant has been hanging in the shed for 2 days now so i think it's time to get it prepped. Would have been great to see a demonstration of gutting or filleting.
@marpocalypse Thankyou & glad it helped,to be honest I stopped gutting them and instead just removed the meat as the bad internal smell got infused into the meat, now for some thats part of the taste but the mrs went off it as she hated the smell when I gutted them so by just removing the meat and then pot roast / cook as normal you get less tainted meat, try gypsy style pot roast, google it for recipe and cook it up,imo the best dish for pheasant :)
@ThePelletgunman Its not illegal to shoot pheasant but it is frowned upon for some reason, toffs dont like to see it & believe it to be anfair / not sporting although im not sure whats sporting about scareing em out of the woods with beaters for the waiting crowd of shotguns :/, just as long as you are a good shot & imo go for the head then like this one will go down very humainly,& make sure they are wild and not owned,i used my fenman .22 12ft/lb although i dont anymore as i prefer woodys :)
@ThePelletgunman No probs,I very much doubt it,even to get permission to shoot pests can be a mission,im lucky the ones that live on the farm where i live are wild & owned by nobody,i no longer shoot them as i have gone off the taste but still often dodge them driving along the road in and out :),to be honest for me wood pigeon is the best tasting & a far more difficult bird to shoot so a great challenge, get your BASC insurance, dress smart, get onto some farms and have a chat with the owner.
@ThePelletgunman IMO yes but just make sure its the wood pigeon you eat and not the dirty feral, woodys have a white stripe on each wing, they are very much like beef steak but with a gamey taste.
hey great video, i noticed you said its sometimes rather hard to skin a bird in one, this is because the fat on the bird sets almost like a bar of soap, upto 3 hours after shooting it if u pluck a little feathers off its neck and skin back down from there it comes off easily with the head and legs still attached so is still great to hang them for a few days. :-D
@jackjones964 thanks jack and thanks for the tip, to be honest im prob not gonna hang em anymore as im not too keen on the rotten taste, the last one i hung for 3 days and the meat was quite crumbly and had a fair amount of odour i assume from decomposition so next season im gonna marinate the next ones in olive oil and lemon juice overnight to help tenderise the meat instead :)
thanks sol, well the name arceye as you know is from my welding but i am very happy to say that to this day i have avoided arceye as im very careful, fingers crossed i'll never go through that pain because i have heard it is very nasty :/
yep spot on mate and it does not have much of it as they are very active birds, keep it all to help keep the meat juicy and for flavour when cooking :)
haha I love your vids :D "play with the tendens, pull one, the claws clench, pull the other, oo look they relax!, give it to your kids for christmas" 5 stars once again :D
LOL!! cheers mate i like to give a laugh, my daughter loves to watch me do this and she's just 5, its good to show them so they get a full understanding of how our food is sourced and prepped, wont be long and she'll be out with me shooting too :)
nice one with the land and to get full permission too!!, one day i really hope to get the opportunity to shoot dear or wild boar, im going for my FAC in the new year which will get me one step closer to the dream, good luck with it and ENJOY!!
well if you dont hang em then marinate it in olive oil/lemon juice& wine in a bag the night before remove all air from bag then all meat will marinate and tenderise ready for the next days dinner , and remove the tendons like i do and you will have loads more meat :)
thanks mike and i am the same ,i too find it relaxing and very rewarding doing the whole proccess, i especially love skinning em, some may find that disturbing LOL!! good luck with your shoot:)
cheers cressy, you should of seen her face when she walked in while i was taking the skin off the legs, she was heaving from the smell, she's a great girl and thoroughly enjoyed the gypsy style pot roast i cooked today, it was FOOOOKIN LOVELY with not only pheasant but some woody breast too with smoked streaky bacon/bread/apples/ wine/ brandy/ saute spuds.....are ya gettin hungry X)
Quality mate.. theres a load of these on my shoot.. when rabge where you at when you bagged it? its a large bird so im think close .. you thought about getting a pcp yet mate?
Thanks c t i shot it from my bathroom window and it was about 25-30mts, as for pcp i will be sticking with my trusty fenman for now, i may get one some day but too many other things i want :)
