  • this is like ESPN for geeks

  • This dates back to... when? 2007? or earlier?

  • @aryesegal1988 Based on the terminology they were using "SuSe" instead of "OpenSuse" and "Red Hat" instead of "Red Hat enterprise Linux" or "Fedora", id say it would have to be pre 2004.

  • BSD is free, But LINUX is Open source

  • @TheMsdos25 Hey, BSD is Open Source too, BSD is not GPL but is Open Source! And I think that the BSD Licence is better for some tasks

  • I miss this show and techtv in general :/

  • TechTV was great back in the day. Sucks that it is gone now.

  • Everyone is retarded.....

  • FreeBSD isn't better than Linux. And Linux isn't better than FreeBSD. Each OS has it's special points. FreeBSD is probably more effective on Servers, but Linux is more effective for desktop computer. And it's both free and so much better than Windows! Windows is the shared enemy. ;)

  • @Veltrakz Yeah, Windows is so Evil, but Can Linux and FreeBSD run PC Games -Without- Windows Emulator? :)

  • FreeBSD... g13lz 10v3 17 700!

  • My first linDist was slackware, beautifull thing, but if you need security, realibility and speed try freebsd, I have been working with two freebsd servers, very realiable, and I use winxp/win7 just for gaming or open Msoffice-crap files. You don´t have to get crazy, just install it on a VMWARE machine and prove it.

  • it's all the same thing, there's really a comparison, windows is just a mod of all of it, doesn't mean that i have to try it

  • though that could be true

but some people still thinks life should not to be more complicated while using the computer

and with both some well known software support windows and lots of games easy to find the solution on it

the windows always win lots of customers

  • I miss the old Tech Tv. G4 is a SpikeTv clone now

  • six years of using BSD... and in all that time there's no scenario in which Linux could beat BSD in the speed OR recoverability from catastrophic hardware failures department. And about the ease of use... it's relative... I use linux a lot in my desktops... but on the servers it's BSD all the way...

  • I tried PC-BSD and it crashed. FreeBSD always worked, but it's complicated.

  • @glowcode You just need to read the handbook carefully and a couple of times, i was saying the same.

  • Lord SUSE is a horrible thing to compare should have compared slackware...linux would have been on top.

  • Slackware > FreeBSD :-D

  • @NaturalGroundation uhh.. no.

  • @replay0018 uhh...yes look around i would bet money that Suse i barely found anywhere other than Novell networks while Slackware is ran openly in server environments.

  • @NaturalGroundation 1) Suse? Suse is not BSD. 2) BSDs beat Linux on the server department. Linux might have more market share, I would think because their 'easier' to use, and theirs support from Red Hat and SuSE.

  • @replay0018 The Linux distro being used is SuSE. I was saying Slackware (another linux distro) would whip BSD with its hands tied behind its back.

This show did a really shit job in comparing the two. Like I said before SuSe is a horrible comparison.

  • @NaturalGroundation "Slackware would whip BSD" Maybe as a desktop, but as a server.. no. Have you ever even used any of the BSDs?

  • @replay0018 Desktop or server. Slackware Linux uses the BSD-style file layout for its system initialization files. Also any file on Slackware is easily editable directly in a script file. Slackware has way more support for hardware more specifically processors which BSD face plants on. Furthermore processing on a BSD machine is agonizingly slow as it uses a default kernel compared to slackware running the latest.

Slackware can run perfectly under 200mhz 30meg ram 2gig hard drive can fbsd?

  • @NaturalGroundation "Slackware has way more support for hardware more specifically processors which BSD face plants on." /facepalm .. =/ freebsd supports 8+, openBSD 6+, netbsd 8+ with 49 ports, slackware? only 4 (I think or 3?). "Processing on a BSD machine is agonizingly slow" LOLL joking right? The FreeBSD's project main goal is performance and stability. Default kernel? wtf? BSDs and Linux don't use the same Kernel. Slackware needs 486 processor, 64MB ram. FreeBSD also 486, but 24MB ram.

  • Comment removed

  • @dvamateur Sort of. Mac OS X uses a heavily modified FreeBSD kernel, and there are tweaks all over the place. There's no denying that it started with FreeBSD, though.

  • Linux or freebsd for servers, Mac os for everyday use if you want everything to look nice, windows for games that don't come on Mac or everyday use if you want most stuff to look ugly

  • Pretty pointless. Tells you almost nothing about the difference between Linux and BSD. Hey look, you can browse the web and watch a movie. Wow!

  • FreeBSD = Free Blue Screen of Death?

  • the two only had a few seconds apart. really they both are awesome operating systems and both tux and beastie should learn from each other. ArchLinux, Slackware, and Gentoo are great examples.

  • I'd never use Linux as the feel of the common desktop environmrnts feel dreadful like 5 years behind OSX and Windows7.

If I had to pick one OS to use for the rest of my life it would be OSX, feels rock solid and is full of inovation and little touches that keep on putting a smile on my face day after day. Windows 7 is quite solid and good for games but there's too many OSX programs I can't live without.

FreeBSD would be the only opensource OS I would use (PCBSD)

  • @i3ever Are you talking about GNOME or KDE or X(lol)? Did your Windows7 have compiz?

  • lol osx is like the attractive non asbergers version of FreeBsd

  • @TurnYourBrainOn2

osx is for people who can have the best of both worlds. I'm able to use adobe creative suite on osx while still retaining all the rock solid foundation of freebsd.

  • @vseae15o ok?

  • Comment removed

  • @TurnYourBrainOn2

it means im free of asberger

  • 23 People are Windows Users.

  • @RagingBubuli Im Win user but i dont disliked it :o

  • @RagingBubuli i think more than 23 people use windows

  • I cant understand these people! Why do you need such shits like linux bsd macos and other underground shitholes if there is windows. With massive software spectra and easy to run.

  • @sandis52 Please tell me you're joking.

You do realize that nearly every electronic device within 500 feet of you is running some form of Unix or the Linux kernel... right? You understand that this website (and 60%+ of other websites) are running Linux?

Windows = Good for gaming. Period.

*nix = Good for development, servers and anything that requires fast, accurate, secure and *STABLE* performance.

Please educate yourself before bashing something you don't understand.

  • Comment removed

  • @ncn8ochaser Please tell me you are joking! Do you realize that every electronic device within 5 meters (even your baby cellphone) is running on some windows. You understand that fact your shitty bsd, linuxes and all opens source shits are "stable" because no one is using these systems that's why no one is making viruses for them.

*nix && *nux = good if you want to slow down any pc and have no software available (except some shitty softs)

60% are running linux - congratulations

  • Excuse me, good sir. Please fact check before posting such a comment.

Take, for instance, Windows. Microsoft has ported BSD software to run on it's own operating system. Mac OS X as well, though Apple is a bigger "offender" in this area.

Furthermore, who would want to run Windows on an embedded device, when you could have a stripped down variant of BSD/Linux or even L4?

  • @nfwu Sir! just google (images) "os market" ,and you will see the truth of your empty words. Good luck Mr "I know everything about nothing "

  • @sandis52 Please do not bring in statistics about the PC market when talking about the embedded market. For instance, do a google search for "snapshot of the embedded Linux market". There are many more embedded devices than PCs.

There are also examples of Linux being used in medical devices. One example off the top of my head is SUSE Linux which is used in several of Siemens' MRI systems. Please note that medial devices have to be approved before they hit the market.

  • I like how FreeBSD uses upstream packages, and allows the upstream provider to test their own software. I dislike my OS version limiting user-land app versions. Also, did any Linux dist ever copy FreeBSD's usage of a userland etc versus the package installed /etc? I think its brilliant that you can customize your configs without having to touch the package provided config file.

  • I came to this video to see if i it is a good idea to put bsd on my old computer. I don't like the video because the freeBSD team has two of the guys who worked on it and a Beastie mascot while the Linux "team" has some unknown douchebag installing SUSE - one of the crappiest distros ever. And yes-there is no Tux!

  • Nice to hear the FreeBSD guys being fair about Suse's installation lag due to its graphical environment. Wish more people followed suit.

  • I miss TechTV :(

  • Where's Linus Torvalds?

  • Comment removed

  • SUSE is garbage.

  • I miss olden-day techtv. :[

  • They should make them fight.... hell has no fury like a nerd in rage..

  • freeBSD and linux are good os , SPECIALLY FreeBSD

  • Ports my ass. Portage from Gentoo Linux outruns it anyday.

  • Why I hate *BSD. Microsoft and Apple feeds from them. Always. Irreversable. Always staying behind. Always unfinished geek-os.

  • depressing, i miss techtv!!!! fck comcast!!!

  • boring ?

  • the "beginner thing" is the benchmark for this competition. If the bullshit was omitted, FreeBSD would be victorious.

  • i miss this show

  • @opensourceplz same here

  • So to install Gnome/KDE (a working desktop) on BSD you have to install the Linux kernel, that is a waste of time, why not just go with a Linux distro even though they all use the same crappy hugely outdated x11.

  • @mojotail That makes no sense what-so-ever.

  • @mojotail What? Why the hell would you need to install the Linux kernel?

  • I wanna make a few things clear. FreeBSD is NOT outdated, Linux is NOT an operating system (it's actually just a kernel). What I mean to say is there is a lot of fanboy comments on here about linux, while I use linux for my main OS, I use freeBSD as a server. They are very different systems, and they work different ways. FreeBSD may feel a little dated because of the default shell, which is not BASH, but you can install BASH if you want.

  • @WaffleEgo Worthless shit is what you are made of, therefore you are a Worthless Piece of Shit.

Yes, that is suppose to be a bad thing.

  • it was original pronounced "dee-mon"

  • freeBSD mascot = satin

    linux = chuck norris

    windows = none...........

  • @pkemr4 Satin is a type of silk weave :P

  • @runner97 What's the problem with Finland?

  • Freebsd... just for real man.

    ;)

  • Wow, I didn't learn anything from this video... Show me some performance comparisons between the two. Maybe some batch scripts. Show me how to configure x, and show me some useful command (CLI) the are more useful on one system or the others. Maybe they will show that on the 2nd video, but no sys-admin can expect to learn from silly videos.

  • Lets see Arch vs. FreeBSD :3

  • One of the biggest problem I've ran into on Open Source systems is rather spotty wi-fi support, you can't just plug in any card and have it work right away. (Given some distributions are better than others for networking). But all driver issues are because manufacturers make their products for windows, whilst Linux has to adapt itself for the products. Due to Apple's hardware control OS X can side step such an issue by simply providing drivers for one network card, the Apple Airport Extreme.

  • Linux =D

  • They really needed to compare gentoo and freebsd. They are very similar. Gentoo uses portage whereas BSDs use ports.

  • @greendayaddictions

Agreed, they can even compare an install from make.

    LOL

  • unfortuantely i kind of wish there was one os to do it all. freebsd has some cool features but drivers are pretty lacking like the intel driver is slow and barely usable whereas on linux its actually slowly been getting better and better to the point where it works pretty well.

  • @zequelll

They both benefit each other, what people dont understand is that the difference between distro's actually the attitude of the development.

And by the way FreeBSD can dun plenty of linux drivers, as a matter of fact it can run practically any linux program without a modification.

  • @missingxtension

actually ive become quite accustomed to freebsd and prefer it when possible has a better/cleaner design in general. just most of my computers dont have an nvidia card which is what makes freebsd shine :)

  • iam linux but never tried freebsd.. is it easy to use like linux?

  • linux easy to use ??? windows is easy to use Linux suck if you need to install any program

  • @HIDDENTECH2 Ubuntu has an easier interface than windows..

  • @Welocy looks the same to me I have win7 and linux ubuntu and xp on my laptop .

I like wind 7 better , but is just my opinion .

  • @Welocy Are you blind, or just plain stupid? Children could use windows from the age of 5 with EASE, and no one telling them how to do anything. Linux is not really designed for young users, as having to run things in root with a password or command etc is typically something a kid could (or would want...) to do.

  • @darkwiz666 this is what i think many schools think, along with many other reasons to run windows. but i think it underestimates the quick learning of these new generations. depends on what age your referring to.

  • @HIDDENTECH2 lol not really. (most) Linux distrobutions are not harder to use than windows, just differant. Distro's like Ubuntu, Mandriva, OpenSUSE are very easy to use. Arch, Gentoo and Slackware... well not so much. But distro's like that aren't meant to be easy to use.

  • What happened to Tux (Linux Penguin)?

  • @rico4u2day2 ok, so im not saying this to be an asshole or anything, but it just made me laugh. please dont take it the wrong way and appreciate the humor =)

saying Tux (the Linux Penguin) was kinda unnecessary. im pretty sure that ANYBODY who would come to watch this video and then be interested enough to read the comments MUST know who Tux is!

  • @rico4u2day2 Hes alive and well. You can see him on both slax and ubuntu (theyre the only two i have used so far so i wouldnt know of any others)

  • @rico4u2day2 daemon slapped it into oblivion.

  • @rico4u2day2 i ate him..with hot sauce

  • I decided to move from freeBSD to Gentoo, it feels more up-to-date for me.

A linux system with BSD ports(named portage), big deal.

  • I feel the same way. Gentoo <3

  • I prefer Linux hands down. FreeBSD just feels outdated. It's not a bad OS, just not as good as linux. If linux disappeared, I would probably go to FreeBSD.

  • Eh, Linux doesn't support zfs natively.

  • Solaris user? Your system is not that bad, but it gave me tons of hardware issues, and was just enough like linux as well as different from linux that it drove me insane. I talso gave me hardware issues. Probably not Solaris' fault, but it still made it useless to me. I was pleased to find GNOME installed though. EXT2/3/4 is good enough for me. In fact, one of the reasons I hate windows is because of FAT16/FAT32/NTFS. Defragging is SO yesterday!

  • @bendibell

me too i liked freebsd but its just not where its at as in most stuff is written for linux and not everything works on the linux emulation layer.

  • different tools for different purposes.

  • @bendibell

BSD more stable than Linux man lol

  • @xMandalorex Wiping my bootloader AND partition table, and then deciding to copy it's drive's boot sector to my completely different drive on the second boot is not stable.

  • @bendibell

well i would only usb BSD as a server and Linux as a desktop

  • @bendibell or you could just use windows...

  • @bendibell

Maybe, FreeBSD isn't such a progressive as Linux when speaking about implementation of new technologies, but it's way way simplier. The whole idea of OS organization is as close to UNIX way as possible.

As an example, system-level configs are placed in /etc while user-level configs (daemons, just programs etc...) are placed in/usr/local/etc and it NEVER changes. Also, i think, such things as GEOM, IPFW+PF, Netgraph help to make a decision between Linux and FreeBSD.Or OpenBSD :)

  • @bendibell It depends what you mean by "not as good as". If you mean ease of use, then Linux is definately better. However, if you want to be almost certain that your server will be secure, then BSD is by far the best.

  • @bendibell

For a desktop user you may find this, but if your comparing OS purely in terms of desktop, you probably wont get why many think FreeBSD is a much more capable OS. I find that linux has too many distros with too many variances in each (including the software) and is more cutting edge whereas FreeBSD in my experience is much more stable and secure in all respects.

  • @bendibell

    LOL

  • @bendibell Isn't Mac OS X using FreeBSD kernel?

  • i like all operating systems ;D except windows me ;X

  • They both have there applied application.. AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, Linux, FreeBSD all have their place and use. They all scale up/out amazingly, are super stable, secure, etc...

    Truthfully

    Linux/*nix = Best

    Windows = Shit

  • Windows is not just any shit, it's the 90-year-old hobo with stomach flu's shit.

  • BSD is good!

  • Please, give me a REASON. Instead just follow others.

  • yeah, there both good, no hate between em

  • I miss ZDTV and TechTV. Both were SO much better than G4. Leo was great. :-)

  • correction Leo is great!!! He is my tech idol!!!

  • any good alternatives to TechTV?

  • Google Revision3 or Twit. They are both good online networks of content from many of the guys that once worked for TechTV.

  • what i was probably talking about is live a tv show where i can stream video like TechTV

  • This may still not be what you are looking for but you can also google live twit. You can view a live stream while they are recording and recorded stuff when their not.

Chris Pirillo also does a live stream but it's less structured.

  • I think i try FreeBSD/PcBSD. However BSD lacks wireless and flash. I dunno have they solved these problems. Then there are device support problems for BSD. Or aren't there.

  • 7.2 has flash support in firefox 3.0. wireless is getting better, but not ideal.

  • Whats with the debian hating in this discussion?

  • Am I the only hot Linux/Freebsd/Unix user... it sure seems like it.

  • Yeah! You must be the god of hotness. No man/woman can stand your hotness. That's must be why the glaciers is melt because your so hot.

  • Sounds about right.

  • Slackware's the best Linux I have ever used. Never used FreeBSD so I can't judge, it sounds really damn good though.

  • Comment removed

  • Daemon the power to serve.

  • This video is old, very old. This is back when SUSE was the biggest thing after RedHat had it's time in the light.

As for Linux being junk, I doubt you are able to formulate a logical reasoning why. Especially in the light of Linux being the most prevalent OS in the server market, and holding the largest number of title's in the super-computer crowd.

  • Linux is junk.

  • ubuntu's my favorite but all OS have they're advantages, you can't really say "this one is best" it all depends on the user and their needs. (except mac they just suck)

  • (Free/Open/Net) BSD is what you get when a bunch of Unix hackers sit down to try to port a Unix system to the PC. Linux is what you get when a bunch of PC hackers sit down and try to write a Unix system for the PC.

  • @jnkmail09 couldn't have said ut better myself.

  • Never tried FreeBSD, but Ubuntu is my favorite OS of all time.

  • Suse is sucks, Debian would be better to represent linux in this case.

  • i prefer PCBSD

  • PCBSD = FreeBSD.

  • Yes i know

  • BSD is nothing without Linux and Linux is nothing without BSD.

Only see the sockets or the ported drivers...

  • FreeBSD depends on Linux. Linux does not really depend on FreeBSD. There would be some real sadness if FreeBSD died, but there would be much more for Linux. I say this not out of malicia, but because Linux has gotten much more exposure. I will be honest, I prefer Linux. FreeBSD is true UNIX, so they got one there, but then Linux has a more modern feel...

  • BSD was first do your home work

  • I did not mean the time that linux has existed, but linux has gotten more attention than FreeBSD.

  • I prefer Linux

  • I'm right and you're wrong...

  • FreeBSD is the best for servers, Linux is best for desktops. I would not want to mix them around

  • FreeBSD aren't that good yet on desktop due to that it doesn't support that many drivers and plugins as linux does. But still it got a quality that linux doesn't have.

  • who said anything about desktop? I said FreeBSD is the best server os

  • You should check your comment before you post. Yes you said that Freebsd is best for servers and yes it is. But still there is an option for having it as a desktop manager if you want to have it like that.

  • I'm well aware of what I said. Yes you could run FreeBSD as desktop. You are the one who contradicts yourself about saying that FreeBSD doesn't have all the drivers that linux does. (and yes, via video drivers are semi broken for FreeBSD)

  • Well for the moment there isn't either a BETA or a real driver to the Creatives card. Linux for now have only a BETA driver. Which is in it self a step forward than having a emulator. Even so some network cards doesn't work on FreeBSD. Now i don't want to give Linux any credit for being a good one more that FreeBSD deserve more what it gets. While Linux gets more and deserve less.

  • I agree on this. This is why I run only FreeBSD on servers for more than 5 years non stop. Nothing can beat FreeBSD here. and yes I know Solaris, Tru64, AIX, NetBSD, OpenBSD... FreeBSD is stilll the best:)

  • The two best known free operating systems...LOL I guess he's never heard of Solaris

  • OpenSolaris is quite a new project. So that's true.

  • mm why suse and not debian or even ubuntu

  • because ubuntu sucks bad

  • if a guy in this thread is right, this program was made in about 2003 - ubuntu's first release came in 2004.

  • What the hell is Linux BSD? Is it some new lame linux thing that want to be like freebsd?

  • Yeah, Like ''Lindows''...

  • I knew a guy who wouldn't use BSD because he is a Christian and didn't like the BSD mascot. Seriously.

  • Comment removed

  • I hate people like that.... totally make Christians look bad..

  • What a shame. BSD mascot's so cute!

  • lol religious people are stupid

  • @redboar You should have explained him what a daemon is. A daemon is not a devil ^_^

  • @redboar screw him
