@Dombowerphoto hi! I'm planing to start on flash photography, do you think a sb 700 strong enough to do low key photos? and how did you fire your flash gun without firing your in camera flash to trigger the flash? Cause I've read that I need to use in camera flash to trigger external flashes without pocket wizards. And do you recommend the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8?
@nicenoughphil then shoot your model with the sun facing them. use a reflector as well to get them as bright as possible and then put a dark background behind, either a shaded area or a black screen with no light on it. The first picture in my book is of a grasshopper which is done in this exact way
How do you fire your flash without a trigger? I tried doing it on my 50D but it didn't work. I've attached it on the shoe stand that it came with and have turned on the wireless setting on my camera, but it didn't fire. Can you help me?
@Dombowerphoto thank you for replying. I think I understood your strategy even though I'm not English speaker. you adjusted the shutter speed at 1/350 and f at 6.7, lens 50mm, right? is that all? Can I get same result by using D5100? and what if I have no external flash like yours? (I tried several times, if I use built in flash, I get normal picture.. if I don't, I get black picture!
@Dombowerphoto Cheers, anyone want to buy a pair of canon 430 EX II's 8-)
Only kidding , I think i might be able to get it to work if I get hotshoe sync cords as I assume then that the camera will think it's still mounted to the top so give me the hi speed sync
I'm trying to do this with my Canon 7D and 430EX II speedlite BUT (and please forgive the noobie question but i can't find the answer googling it) I seem to be only to get 1/250 second shutter speed if using the flash off camera (as soon as you pop the onboard flash to trigger the speedlite it drops to 250) . If I have it mounted on the camera then I can get it to hi-speed sync no problem.
@justhomdotcom thats cos you are using canon and not nikon speedlights. however i think the canon 540ex has this facility to go faster than sync speed
@justhomdotcom get some cheap radio triggers, off ebay. Well do check the specs first, but those make the flash think its on a camera, so gives you all those options.
@justhomdotcom It's called Hypersync on the Canon. I have a 580EX and it has it, I'm sure the 430 has it as well. The symbol for it is a lightning bolt with the arrow going down and a "H" next to it. Hope that helps.
@justhomdotcom Canon flashes sync at all speeds and to fist and second curtain, there's no way you are only syncronizing at 1/1250. The problem could be the transmitters, If i use my cheap yongnous I only sync 1/250 and slower but If I use the pocket wizards I can sync to 1/8000 even to overpower the sun. Read the strobist blog for more reference
@justhomdotcom Off camera, Canon's Wireless Transmitter only allows the maximum shutter speed of 1/250s, no option. You could use the ST-E2 Wireless Transmitter or a sync cable.
please excuse me for my limited knowledge on this area, but could anybody please explain how he can control the flash without having it attached on the camera? I didn't see any remote flash trigger!!!
@hykugan Nikon has a system called CLS Creative Lighting System, which the camera is set to commander mode thru it's popup flash and the speedlite is set to the proper channel and group and fire away. If you view the video again, when he brings the camera up, the pop up is lifted.
Seems like you use the Tamron, Perhaps 17-50mm 2.8, quite a bit? I've heard things about tamron being poorly constructed, and optics not quite being so sharp? I'm sure since you're using it quite as much, that your opinion is quite the opposite? :-) Great video(s) :D
What kind of triggers do you use? my 5Dmk2 will only sync with my 580EX2 up to 250/1 on the camera, with the cable (ze-ocscc) or pocketwizards Plus2 transreceivers... any tips on that?
by far the quickest and easiest explanation of low key.. great job.. you've got a new sub because you are quick... all the other guys take 5-10 minutes to explain this.. great job
gotrottin---he set the background ambient light to dark ,then he added flash----remember he is controlling 2 exposers ,(ambient & flash) they are controlled separately

@Jeffo2307 sure thing. but low key on newborn babies… not sure if that is the best look low key is good for giving and edgy look, it works well strong poses and a bit of attitude, not squishy little babies, i would say high key would be best for babies as long as you dont hurt their little eyes
@cthorne82 the flash from the camera (the pop up flash) is not set to affect the image in anyway it is just set to be a commander of the off camera flash. it will not need a power setting
hi Dom im new to photography, i am just started to collect some stuff after saving up, camera of choice was a canon 7d. sorry not nikon. thing is, i find it FANTASTIC how you do this high and low key, getting a pure white or jet black backgroung in that situation is BRILLIANT !. i have sumscribed to your channel and learn alot from you. cant wait to try things like this.
@stecartmel its not too difficult when you know how. just give it a little practice and you will soon be able to amaze viewers on the images you are able to make in a situation
this method will give u an over expose photograph, thats why he did show the actual image on his DSLR , the image which was shown underwnt "lightroom processing" and its obvious was'nt it. Dont be fool by this techniques, post processing is a must for this stunning image!
@asiong46 the back of the dslr was too bright as the camera filming was set to the brightness of the room. the image that comes up on the screen was indeed the photo that was taken. I have no idea why you think this would be a method that would give over exposure. any post processing that was done was to smooth out the skin.
@asiong46 Actually, this method works perfectly. It won't be overexposed at all because you're using too high a shutter to capture the ambient light, then you're using a flash that is set to a low enough power so as not to expose anything but the objects close to the shooter. If you're not going to understand what you're trying to convey, don't.
dom im a huge fan of your videos i watch them at night to learn some extra tips
im from mexico city but my mom is from australia...here is my big fat question
how can you use an off camera flash at 350 shutterspeed? i have a canon 5dmk 2 and i can only go at 160 ..if i go beyond i get a black stripe cuz of the courtain =(...can you make a video about high speed sink please? i love dramatic dark skyes ..really hard to get with speedlighs
@dadvian1 my nikon flashes can go faster than the max sync speed by becoming a very short duration constant light not a flash. its what makes nikon awesome
What are you using there a D90? I'm sure flash commander mode is pretty much the same on something like a D7000 too, but if you want to remove any trace of the pre-flash from the image (it can be there --- especially as a highlight in the eyes sometimes) Nikon makes an ir filter you can put over the flash that sits in the hot-shoe. You probably already know that though. Sometimes it doesn't really matter though and you won't notice it at all especially if you are standing further back.
@maninikhil123 wel you will need a bigger flash, and a further away background. or get a black background sheet and kill as much ambient light as possible
hi dom, just a question, i have an sb700 and a d90... i want to have a photo like this but when i set my camera to commander mode the flash won't fire and if i also use my yongnuo rf603 i can't go beyond 180... is there any advice that you can give?... =)
Well...since your setting the shutter speed around 1/350 sec at f6.7, I'm guessing 100 - 200 ISO, simply because, since the background is going to be black with only the flash as a light source, you wouldn't need a high ISO to take in more light. Quite the contrary, you want to minimize as much light as possible to achieve the effect in the shoot. Was I on the right track?
@Dombowerphoto ISO 100 because I do not see any grain and you always want to keep your ISO as low as possible on a DSLR and the standard ISO is for some is ISO 100 or ISO 400 on a SLR but you can get a higher ISO for faster speed. Also, you're shooting with flash so you should be using a low ISO.
hello, thank you very much for your video ! Please tell me what is the "thing" on your flash unite ??? I try to flash my 580EXII wireless from canon 60D but it seems like I cannot set a shorter time than 1/250 when it is wireless (internal transmitter cant do that :( It is possible to make low key with 1/250 ?? thank you :) petr
hope you could also post your camera settings like the shutter speed, aperture, ISO and anything that is important... i do love the way you shoot by the way... great pictures... =)
@uluuluululu i think nikon d90 or better has built in wireless commander. also he maybe using his popup flash to fire his external flash. if want TLL you need a sc28 cable.
Speaking of flash, I bought a 580ex that was never used for $100. I've been wanting some pointers/recommendations on what light stand, softbox/unbrella, and wireless triggers. What would be your recommendations Dom?
@909prepper my recommendations would be to have a quick look at the 4 or 5 videos i have done regarding lightstands video 5 has this link watch?v=sitlm32Fmsk
i'm using a sony a390 and a jessops flash and its goes into manual mode so what power , iso , f stop should i use on my flash . my camera only lets me shoot a 1/160 with flash .
@khmaster22 impossible to answer, depends on how powerful your flash is, how far away from the wall or the subject it is, give it a try and send me a video of you attempts. but iso should be pretty low, around 100-200 when working with flash as you are controling the light.
Thanx for all your posts!! I have found your vids very helpful and hope you´ll keep posting more vids with helpful tips and ideas!! There are several good photographers who post vids on youtube but yours are among the best so keep up the good work!! I also wish you good luck and further success as a professional photographer!! Cheers :)
I tried to duplicate your results but had no luck. I'm kinda new a photography, but I can't get my D7000 to shoot any faster than 1/250 (Sync speed) with my sb-600. How were you able to crank yours up to 1/350? Is it just because you have a more professioal camera? Also my flash lit up my background which was about 9 feet away, so I didn't get that black background effect you got. A little help? Anyone?
@obi5312 In the menu of your camera, try to find the flash synchro speed item (e1). You can see in the list 1/320 (Auto FP). The D7000 is an excellent camera, pretty sure better then the Dom's one. Excuse me Dom :-).
you @obi5312 Try with with flash on full where need F 11 or F 16 and notice he ( in the video) held the flash on a downward angle so the light did not hit the Background try to shoot at night in your room or blackout the windows
Just wondering about some friendly advice, I have a D60 for now, i was wondering if you could recommend a off camera cord for a sb900 with full ttl compatabily there is so many to choose from.
Cheers for your time and all the effort you put into making these tips and all your other great videos :)
Mr. Bower, how did you get to sync the flash at 1/350th sec? Since till now i've only heard of sync speed max of 1/250th sec. Is it an advanced flash gun or is there a technique you might want to share with us? thanks
@alip93 I know what it means, what i was curious about is the sync speed he uses for his Nikon speedlight. In the little time researching i've never heard of 1/350th/sec; which you may know is a few stops down from what you and i are limited to (1/250th/sec) with the canon flashes....
@asjesus1 HSS (thanks for pointing that out Dom!) is canons version of the same thing. Nikon can usually only go to 250th as well but they have a special mode on their flashes too. It allows shutter speeds higher than 250th on the compatible flashes. Not sure what speeds it goes up to but i've used it on 1/1000th. ST-E2 allows you to do this wirelessly. Helpful if you need a shallow depth of field but control of the ambient light. Hope that helps!
@Dombowerphoto My old 450D could do it - so i think most of them can. The 430EX model flash and up can do it. The only current canon cameras with built in wireless flash is 60D and 7D but i'm not sure if they can do HSS with the built in flash - haven't found much info on it. Something to check out. I know the ST-E2 can though. Might start doing some canon youtube videos when I have some time!
i'm looking into buying the SB-600 flash for my Nikon D60, do you think it's a good flash? I hear a lot of good things about it. I found it on Amazon for $215 with free shipping and because i'm low budget photographer, I have zero income right now, so it's hard, but I really need to get a flash before Christmas, because i'm shooting my family's Christmas eve party and been ask to take a portraits for one of my family members this holiday season. I only have the 18-55 and 55-200...
@nerwin they dont make that flash anymore, you have to get the sb700. i would go with that but if you have the money go for the sb900 i have it and love it. but if you can get the sb600 for that cheap i would say go for it
@prt035 they will be different for every situation, depends on the distance to the backgruond, the distance from subject etc. do it and adjust is my advice
@new25ash I quickly scanned the D5000 manual, and i does not mention High Sync FP... there's a very good chance the D5000 does not support it. I suppose keeping your shutter speed low and just close your aperture (increase aperture value) to block all the non-flash light.

@justhomdotcom So far as I know 7D doesnt support HSS via pop-up - You must use 580 EX, ST-E2.

@justhomdotcom Off camera, Canon's Wireless Transmitter only allows the maximum shutter speed of 1/250s, no option. You could use the ST-E2 Wireless Transmitter or a sync cable.

Hey @dombower, what do you do if your shoot a full length and try and replicate this? or anythign else oterh than a close up?
maninikhil123 6 months ago
@maninikhil123 wel you will need a bigger flash, and a further away background. or get a black background sheet and kill as much ambient light as possible
Dombowerphoto 4 months ago
@obi5313 It's called High-Speed Sync. Most 'decent' DSLR's have this.

Sorry for this simple question but...What ISO were you using for this shoot?
GenVirtu 6 months ago
@GenVirtu I want you to guess first, and explain your choice. I'll tell u if your right
Dombowerphoto 6 months ago
@Dombowerphoto
GenVirtu 6 months ago
@Dombowerphoto ISO 100 because I do not see any grain and you always want to keep your ISO as low as possible on a DSLR and the standard ISO is for some is ISO 100 or ISO 400 on a SLR but you can get a higher ISO for faster speed. Also, you're shooting with flash so you should be using a low ISO.

Thanks,

i'm using a sony a390 and a jessops flash and its goes into manual mode so what power , iso , f stop should i use on my flash . my camera only lets me shoot a 1/160 with flash .
khmaster22 11 months ago
@khmaster22 impossible to answer, depends on how powerful your flash is, how far away from the wall or the subject it is, give it a try and send me a video of you attempts. but iso should be pretty low, around 100-200 when working with flash as you are controling the light.

Anyone?
obi5312 1 year ago 3
@obi5312
actualy you r right.
Flashes like my SB-900 can only sinc with 1/200s depending on the distance betuin flash and subject.
I just cant understand how could he shot at that speed....
MainVuper 6 months ago
@MainVuper eh? what on earth has the subject to flash distance got to do with the sync speed?
Dombowerphoto 6 months ago 3
@obi5312 i advise you check my other videos on nikon cls and things like sync speed
Dombowerphoto 6 months ago
@obi5312 In the menu of your camera, try to find the flash synchro speed item (e1). You can see in the list 1/320 (Auto FP). The D7000 is an excellent camera, pretty sure better then the Dom's one. Excuse me Dom :-).
goutlet 4 months ago
you @obi5312 Try with with flash on full where need F 11 or F 16 and notice he ( in the video) held the flash on a downward angle so the light did not hit the Background try to shoot at night in your room or blackout the windows

argmax10 1 year ago
Dom! How can I shoot my sb 900 only! without using my on camera flash. Should I be in TTL mode or TTL/BL mode or ?................Camera D80.
QuarterCrawl 1 year ago
@QuarterCrawl i dont think the d80 had the nikon cls system built in. you may need an extra sb900.
but if it does you need to set the on camera flash to this sign "- -" it will still flash but wont affect the image…. much

Mr. Bower, how did you get to sync the flash at 1/350th sec? Since till now i've only heard of sync speed max of 1/250th sec. Is it an advanced flash gun or is there a technique you might want to share with us? thanks
asjesus1 1 year ago
@asjesus1 its a nikon sb900 it can go above normal sync speed, check my most latest videos it will show you
Dombowerphoto 1 year ago
@asjesus1 On canon it is called high speed sync or 'HHS' on the 430EX and up models.
alip93 1 year ago
@alip93 would that not be hss?
Dombowerphoto 1 year ago
@alip93 I know what it means, what i was curious about is the sync speed he uses for his Nikon speedlight. In the little time researching i've never heard of 1/350th/sec; which you may know is a few stops down from what you and i are limited to (1/250th/sec) with the canon flashes....
asjesus1 1 year ago
@asjesus1 with nikon cls you can have any shutterspeed even 8000th of a second. ill be making videos on it soon
Dombowerphoto 1 year ago
@Dombowerphoto great thanks
asjesus1 1 year ago
@asjesus1 HSS (thanks for pointing that out Dom!) is canons version of the same thing. Nikon can usually only go to 250th as well but they have a special mode on their flashes too. It allows shutter speeds higher than 250th on the compatible flashes. Not sure what speeds it goes up to but i've used it on 1/1000th. ST-E2 allows you to do this wirelessly. Helpful if you need a shallow depth of field but control of the ambient light. Hope that helps!
alip93 1 year ago
@alip93 i think canons is the same got to check which cameras and flashes support it.
Dombowerphoto 1 year ago
@Dombowerphoto My old 450D could do it - so i think most of them can. The 430EX model flash and up can do it. The only current canon cameras with built in wireless flash is 60D and 7D but i'm not sure if they can do HSS with the built in flash - haven't found much info on it. Something to check out. I know the ST-E2 can though. Might start doing some canon youtube videos when I have some time!

Spaeckli 1 year ago
Hey Dom,
i'm looking into buying the SB-600 flash for my Nikon D60, do you think it's a good flash? I hear a lot of good things about it. I found it on Amazon for $215 with free shipping and because i'm low budget photographer, I have zero income right now, so it's hard, but I really need to get a flash before Christmas, because i'm shooting my family's Christmas eve party and been ask to take a portraits for one of my family members this holiday season. I only have the 18-55 and 55-200...
nerwin 1 year ago
@nerwin they dont make that flash anymore, you have to get the sb700. i would go with that but if you have the money go for the sb900 i have it and love it. but if you can get the sb600 for that cheap i would say go for it
Dombowerphoto 1 year ago
@Dombowerphoto Well their still selling it on Amazon, so maybe would get that, SB-900 is WAY out of my budget, haha. Having no income sucks!!

what were the speedlight settings

new25ash 1 year ago
@new25ash means either your camera isn't on high FP sync, or your flash doesn't support it
OVABouw 1 year ago
@OVABouw Hi i dont know what FP sync is so im thinking mybe i dont have it? I have a nikon d5000?
new25ash 1 year ago
@new25ash I quickly scanned the D5000 manual, and i does not mention High Sync FP... there's a very good chance the D5000 does not support it. I suppose keeping your shutter speed low and just close your aperture (increase aperture value) to block all the non-flash light.
OVABouw 1 year ago
@new25ash jsut shoot at 1/200th of a second then
