  • I didn't know that bees could slide the blues.

  • This version sucks

  • you disabled ffwd fuc kyou

  • This is a cover tune. Changed lyrics. It's a Robert Johnson tune from the 1930's.

  • sweet sunflowers!

  • AND you might want to change 'Original' to 'Cover', and you might also add that Robert Johnson wrote it waaaaay back in the '30's.

  • Hey man ... You may want to change your "7" to a 5!

  • It's my understanding that the first recording by Elmore James of "Dust My Broom" was in 1952 on Trumpet Records in Mississippi. Sam Phillips in Memphis re-recorded it later that same year for another small company or else the Chess brothers in Chicago, can't remember which. Anyway, the recording supervisor on the original session was Trumpet label co-owner Lillian McMurray. I haven't heard that original version, but it's likely either this one or one that sounds close to it.

  • Hi rocco4116

You're right regarding 1953. This is the version which was released by Chess in 1953 and was entitled Going for Good (Dust My Broom).

You can hear Elmore's first version (with harmonica by the great Sonny Boy Williamson) right here on YouTube!

    This is great music.

Best wishes to all blues fans!

  • I'm wondering if the person meant 1953 and not 1973.

  • Comment removed

  • This isn't the original. Robert Johnson did it originally in 1936. And this wasn't from 1973 obviously since as the person below me said, James died in 1963.

  • actually its debated whether johnson or james actually wrote the song. Elmore james was less than 20 when johnson recorded it but its still plausible

  • Elmore James recorded two versions of Dust My Broom. One in 1951 and one in 1955, under the title, Dust My Blues.

  • Elmore James died in 1963

  • May 24 !! Born January-27-1918.

The most influential (slide) guitarist, with a tremendous impact on many others and almost every supergroup from the sixties & beyond. Stones/Clapton/Fleetwood Mac/Johnny Winter/ Jimmy Hendrix/BB King/Jimmy Reed/JB Hutto a.m.o.

  • @LizzyDouglas

    Son House

  • @LizzyDouglas According to Mike Leadbitter who wrote sleeve notes for Blue Horizon LP To know a man Elmore was born 1910 in Canton Miss, The above LP was recorded in 62 or 63 shortly before he died 23rd May. Heart attack.

  • This was performed by Zombie Elmore James. He was reanimated.

  • Yeah 1973 bollox , i had it on vynyl LP record in 1968 , i'm with the drunk guy a few posts down , what is this time thing anyway . .X

  • 1973? huh?

  • the greatest blues singer of all time will never stop singing

  • @gantock

To be fair no one was the greatest, but oh what a hell of a lot of talented people were around, then.

  • Shouldn't it be 1937? Anyone?

  • Please read the before comments!! This Elmo-version of "Broom" was recorded Jan/17/1953 !!

  • My bad.

I don't know bout you guys, but it's saterday night 3:04 a.m. and I'm drunk.

  • cheers, mate!

  • Any King of the Delta Blues would know that Robert Johnson was influenced by Skip James, Mississippi John Hurt, Son House, and was friends with Elmore James, amongst others.... This is a great version of the song for which really nobody can solely claim credit for its inception only its production.

  • ...wasn't Robert Johnson the person who had all that 'crossroads-sold-my-soul to the devil and hellhounds are coming to get me' rumors around him because of some of his lyrics? (I'm pretty sure that's who they based that episode "Crossroad Blues" of Supernatural on anyway...)

  • That's true; however, he probably didn't write the song but only produced it in a way that was unique and commercially viable.... listening to some of his influences would be enlightening (they are on youtube) and Elijah Wald's book "Escaping the Delta" would also be interesting....

  • pretty much yea but those lyrics were not intended to mean that though

  • Hey, don't want to upset anybody, but Robert Johnson recorded what he recorded in 1936 and 1937 in San Antonio, not in Dallas. The people he recorded with were actually there for the corridos, not for blues. Okay? By the way, isn't it weird that corridos should make a comeback because of the drug trade? I'm a jazz fan but I love Explosion Nortena...

  • THANK YOU

  • Sorry Bro, RLJ DÍD record in Dallas, nót only in San Antone. The Nov.23/26/27 1936-sessions were in San Antonio TX. However, the Saturday June 19 & Sunday 20 1937-sessions were in Dallas TX !! B.t.w., you don't upset me !! Yes at the same time RLJ recorded in S.Antone, Lee O'Daniel & His Hillbilly Boys, Hermanas Barraza con guitarras, The Chuck Wagon Gang, Al Dexter & Eva Garza recorded too. In Dallas, Al Dexter & Luke Owens, Roy Newman & His Boys, Blue Ridge Playboys & John Boyd recorded a.o..

  • I stand corrected. Don't have me old vinyl album covers anymore and didn't read far enough!

  • beautiful what you say lizzy douglas keep on doin'the blues

  • Yilp, you´re right, sorry. But the Fleetwood Mac wasnt bad either.... uh

  • ZZ top? More like the orig?

    Yiulp....

  • go listen to zz top dust my broom, more like the orig.

  • the original was by Robert Johnson. Recorded November 23rd 1936 in Dallas, Tx. I know because im a huge blues fan and RJ is one of my fav's he is the king of delta blues.

  • this ain´t the originial that I have

  • Of course this is NÓT 1973, Elmo died May 24 1963(!) but the 1953 hitversion of 'Broom'.

With J.T.Brown/tnr, Johnny Jones/pno. rec.: Chicago Jan/17/1953. Elmo's 1st 'Broom' was recorded in 1952 Trumpet DRC52. (The only original of Broom was recorded by the writer, Robert Johnson in 1936!) This YT-version is Elmo's 2nd recording of Broom!! DRC52: Jackson MI Elmo/gtr vcl + Sonny Boy Williamson#2 & Odie Johnson Bass.

  • I blush down to my knees.

  • Please, no hard feelings from this side of the pond. We're here to learn from eachother!

Some are good in one thing, others are better in another thing. Peace for everybody who loves the blues !!

  • Hello Lizzie, hope you never catch the memphisminnijitus!

The version you state from 52 is the best version, IMHO.

    G

  • @gitfiddlejim Memphis Minnie wrote "When The Levee Breaks" and Led Zepplin claimed it as their own. They should be ashamed of taking advantage of these old blues originals. Always bothered me, pissed me off.

  • @cooltooth112

Well cooltoth we have to accept this, many of the Black artists borrowed or whatever you wanna call it from other artists. Muddys "Catfish" wasnt the first version, a fair number did it earlier.

What was good about this "borrowing" was how they put thir own unique talents to make it their own excellent version. I have no interest in Ledzeps etc. Or most of the Brit blues boomers.

  • @gitfiddlejim Borrowing is different than using a song and claiming it as one you have written. I don't know how royalties worked backed then. But Led Zep is current enough that that song should show Memphis Minnie as the writer and she or her heirs should be receiveing royalties. When Led Zed borrows they "steal". It is fine and great for the old delta blues people when big groups borrow a song, but credit should be given to the real writer even if the are no longer alive.

  • @cooltooth112 The artist were often underpaid or cheated, an its gon a be difficult to pay the heirs out, if they can even get close to provin their relationship. Yes the writers should get a credit, or a payment if some modernversion makes dough.

  • @cooltooth112 I agree.

  • @LizzyDouglas Jackson, MS not Jackson MI.

  • @Quite correct,as there was no sax on first version.

  • @Quite correct,as there was no sax on first version.

This version which I have on a double 1967 LP on Blue Horizon label was produced by Bobby Robinson, and I have neve really liked it. Not as good as most of his other tracks made earlier.False starts chat between tracks, live not good sounding recording.

Elmore born in 1910 Canton Miss. LP Title is "To know a man"

  • @gitfiddlejim Sorry folks I must correct myself, the above comments re BH LP should be under FeminaDaza 24 posting which i believe is the vesion on this LP from1962/3 just before Elmore passed.

  • Elmore James in 1973? More like Fleetwood Mac.

Apart from which it has too much "top" to the point of distortion

  • nah it is elmore james for sure i got this version on cd, dunno about the year though

  • elmore way way way before 73

  • yea elmore didnt see hardly any of the sixties let alone the seventies. the year is wrong but it is elmore james.

  • Doesn't get any better than this. Thanks for the post!

  • very good music!i like this sound!
