In Stevenson's day and earlier, there didn't seem to be so much interference from refs with their Stop, fiddling about with hankies or whatnot, then Box commands. The headgear! The bent scoring, where you see a guy land 2-3 good punches and the point goes to his opponent. I know why it was introduced, but it's not working, imo. Judging by the quality of pro boxing at the moment, they all might as well stay amateur.

Tua was an 19 year old kid at the time. I've seen Tua walk through much harder punches than that as a grown man. The only fully developed 19 year old heavyweight I've ever seen was Tyson. Also, boxers get MUCH better once they turn pro. Tyson lost to Tillman in the amateurs but won inside a round in the pros. If the amateur Savon had fought the experienced pro versions of guys like Brewster and Briggs, he'd have been eaten alive.

The reason the youngest ever heavyweight champion is Tyson at 20 is that most boxers haven't got the combination of physical maturity and skills to compete at the heavyweight elite level until their mid 20s. If you look at guys who turn pro at 18, they're usually up a few divisions by 25.

What's your point? Savon wasn't undefeated as an amateur. He was even beaten by Ruslan Chagaev (which he avenged) and has been KOed a few times. If Chagaev could beat Savon, what do you think prime Tyson or Lewis would have done to him? Look at any boxer, even a gold medallist - they all start off against easier opposition before being ready to fight the best. Savon was a good amateur, but that's a long way from a pro champion.

Tua was an 19 year old kid at the time. I've seen Tua walk through much harder punches than that as a grown man. The only fully developed 19 year old heavyweight I've ever seen was Tyson. Also, boxers get MUCH better once they turn pro. Tyson lost to Tillman in the amateurs but won inside a round in the pros. If the amateur Savon had fought the experienced pro versions of guys like Brewster and Briggs, he'd have been eaten alive.

Tua was actually 19 or about to turn 19 and yeah, actually it does matter how old you are. The reason the youngest ever heavyweight champion is Tyson at 20 is that most boxers haven't got the combination of physical maturity and skills to compete at the heavyweight elite level until their mid 20s. If you look at guys who turn pro at 18, they're usually up a few divisions by 25.

Savon would have to make massive improvements after turning pro before being good enough to win a title, just as Olympic gold medalists Lennox Lewis and Muhammed Ali did. Tua was 19 and not physically mature when he was KOed by Savon. He took much harder shots against Lewis and wasn't KOed. You should note that Savon wasn't the best Amateur of 1988 - that was Lewis. To say that he could have beaten Lewis, Tyson, et al straight out of the amateurs is just silly.

As they gave to Savon much chances to come pro and even make fights direct with Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis but he never accept... Cause he never wanted to enter to the pro career cause he knew how dirty and fake business turning there... even today is boxing more a show business then a real sport...

What's your point? Savon wasn't undefeated as an amateur. He was even beaten by Ruslan Chagaev (which he avenged) and has been KOed a few times. If Chagaev could beat Savon, what do you think prime Tyson or Lewis would have done to him? Look at any boxer, even a gold medallist - they all start off against easier opposition before being ready to fight the best. Savon was a good amateur, but that's a long way from a pro champion.

I agree he lost maybe a few times as everybody but won much more then lost as he have over %90 win record and u can see from his fighting style that his great like Ali as bigger and even stronger... If he cant KO Tua with helmet imagine what he would do without helmet??? I am preety sure if he was in pro he would 1 of the most KNOCKOUT makers... Audley Harrion won gold too but only in 1 olympic as Savon won bunch of times gold and its just legendary record...

Exactly. How the hell can anyone think that the amateur champion (and only in the heavyweight, under 91 kgs, not super-heavyweight division) has a chance against the professional heavyweight champion? If Savon was to turn pro in 2000 and fight Lewis, it would have been a first round blowout. Tua would have also done the same to him if they were to rematch in the same year. Saying Savon could compete with the best pros is utter stupidity.
