I agree...This is nothing less than 'Classic'. However, I grew up back in the 70's and should point out to those of you that didn't, that this is not in anyway the original 'Cover' for the Album(!) Found that a Shame, for sure;( Album Art was itself something of Import.
I play this song LOUD my friends.....it picks up steam like the train at the beginning ....I think Bowie realized it hence the train at the start.... Boowie!
This and Man Who Sold The World are my two favorite Bowie albums. Miss this one. I miss the seventies. People were so much LESS uptight. What's happening?
I never appreciated this album until I bought a pair of very expensive, nice headphones. I don't regret it. I absolutely refuse to listen to this song especially on cheap iPhone headphones. It's just insulting to the quality that is David Mother Fucking Bowie.
In a world of posers and copycats, Bowie is a unique musician, for sure. I love how most new pop tunes would be over before this song even gets started.
I saw Him twice at Wembley 1976.....recall the green neon Bowielites waving, the collective GASPS during Bunuel's 'Chien Andalou' (surely you TEASE us, DB!!) , the whitelight/whiteheat/orangeblonde-slicked DUKEDOM!!! Love on ya !..... & Eno was there to drink it all in.....
@philbee1956 Yes, you caught the essence of it. I saw the same tour at Olympia in Detroit. When every other band used multicolored lights, Bowie goes with the bright white. This went well with the black suit and white shirt. What a concert and what a band!
What an amazing artist he is, fantastic career and he deserves it. He was always so inspirational and always at the leading edge of anything new, remaking his image over and over again, so rare for a solo artist. I have always loved this guy.....
DB made this album during his "lost years" in Los Angeles. He claims he was so high at the time he doesn't recall recording it. Not bad for being coked to the gills, eh? The title track is so ambitious and brilliant, like Bowie.. Outrageous..the stuff of genius!
@Tedisntakidanymore I don't think any artist/band made such high quality material like Station To Station in their darkest hour, at the peak of their addiction. Bowie is amazing.
@cachiva is really cannon...You have always caught the right word,no doubt about,...anyway,to be honest,i don't know if he's referring to a bouncing thing or to a weapon...i think the right meaning is weapon, but i'm not sure of it.....
I reckon this is was his finest and most daring album, songs like this one, and word on a wing are rare jewels indeed. Saw him do this one at Earls Court in `78, he was fabulous! And yes he probably was coked out of his head when he wrote/recorded this, but shit, does it matter?
I reckon this is was his finest and most daring album, songs like this one, and word on a wing are rare jewels indeed. Saw him do this one at Earls Court in `78, he was fabulous!
This is a masterpiece. But I just want it to go for 90.15, not 10.15. It always was the shortest ten plus minute track ever written, I guess because once the train stops it feels like the track starts again, and once the change to the second half of the track, it feels like it starts again, again. Bowie at his best. He is the man. The fucking best thing from the 70s.
I think there are a few great albums where you can smell the coke in the music, this is one of them. Nightclubbing by Grace Jones is another. This is soooo cokey. The light metallic chemical taste... how can music seem to have that too?
@lensjockeyvideo i heard him say once in an interview that he took so much coke during the recording of this album that he has no memory of those recording sessions
In '76 or so, I wrecked and totaled a '74 VW Beetle. I had this DB album in the 8-track (yes 8-track) at the time, and this song was playing. When the car finally stopped rolling, that 8-track just kept going. In my panic, all I could focus on was this song, and it seemed to play on forever. Luckily, I was just banged around good but the car was a goner. Since that day, this song has always felt very personal to me; I shared some freaked out moments with it for sure.
@ronnogold Me and my friend drove out to Shelter Island -the end of Long Island, and while waiting for the ferry, we got out to check the schedule, and I looked out the window and saw a car driving down the ramp, and said, "Hey there goes a car now! Holy shit, that's your car!-It was. SPLASH! -all the while "Start Me Up" was blasting on the 8-track. We stood there helplessly watching it slowly sink like a ship! It was a mint 74 Pontiac Ventura. Your story instantly brought it all back.
A strange, terrific, engrossing number. In '76, when he recorded this album, DB was living in Los Angeles and was perpetually coked to the gills. He later told interviewers he doesn't recall much about it. But even wasted on coke, Bowie's sheer brilliance is so evident in this song and in "Stay." Incredible talent!
this is a fine tune!
