This closing number at the Fillmore says it all - The Original Allman Brothers Band kicking ass and taking names. Are you guys picking up what they are putting down ?? - Lets tell like it is. Juiceman
Duane and Dickey kick butt on this thang....they really drove them "Pauls n Marshes" like racin' cars that night at the "Fillmo" that night. Amazin' the venue didn't just launch into outer space on this thang. Defines "wailing' ", "smoking' that thang" and inspires us all to pick up our guitars and play. Changed my life, changed millions of us touched our souls.Amen indeed!- johnnyguitar335
All time favorite version of this song is on "Boston Common" from 8/71 which is now out on Peach Records. The die hards have it but for those of you looking for more it is a wild ride starting at minute 9.
This is Betts's baby, his finest guitar work is on the "You Don't Love Me" this jams. Amazing how he lets Duane take over on the climb up on Lizzie Reed while he stums rhythm guitar but Duane definitely returns the favor on this, my all time favorite Allman cover.
I remember dancing around my room playing this song turned up high when the "At Fillmore East" album set first came out. It's just heat breaking to know that Duane would be gone in just four months after this was recorded.
I remember hearing the Fillmore album when I was taking dancing lessons at Chastain Park in Atlanta, Georgia. The DJ had the record playing. I was about 13 years old. Something really drew me to the music. Still love to this day...
I got to see them three times in my life...first time was in the 70's. all three times in Providence, RI. I'm 62 and I still listen to the music I loved was I was young...long live the music...
I, too was waiting for the Soul Serenade segue, and wanted to be pissed when it wasn't there, BUT, this is the SMOKINEST version I ever heard them do. I'm quiverin'. Think I just had an organism.
Truly incredible...I've been listening to all types of music since I was a child, but I never truly understood what It meant to be alive until I heard Daune and Derek.
@ 28zebra I'm right behind ya, been here for 56 years. There'll never be another band better than ABB for me. Saw them at A Warehouse in New Orleans, September 1971, 2 months before Duane's accident. I was with a beautiful girl that night but I barely noticed her, so focused on the band.
right..., you guys hear that sick solo that starts at 9:37 ? Well that's Mr. Betts.. They both owned it, and were perfect compliments to each other. miss ya Duane. get well ,Dickey
My God!" Howard Duane Allman" was so GREAT!!! How in the world was he able to get that finger dexterity? It's blistering fast, transcendantly fast,a whole other building kind of fast! Now,I really do love Richard Bettes, but H.Duane Allman owns RB in these jams.Who could compete though?Taking HDA into account.Kudos to R. Bettes for performing with ABB. Thank You, ABB! Your music really has enhanced my life, and Duane Allman has inspired me to play guitar, more anyone else, period! Always an ABB fan!
Truly Inspiring! Thank you for the chance to hear this great music. I never went to the Fillmore East but I knew the Fillmore West.. ABB remains the perfect fusion of Rock and Blues! Thanks!
@HCSRV - Thanks for posting...I have the deluxe edition of Eat a Peach that includes this entire set and I've lost track of how many times I've listened to it. I've had the chance to see the Bros. with their current lineup live three times and they're certainly great but there's no topping the original
What an amazing sound! As a born and bred Brit I feel the urge to board the next plane to America every time I hear these guys. This music captures so much, has so much soul, feeling, passion..... bugger it, I'm heading back Stateside! :)
Listen to this music - This is why Duane Allman is rated as one of the greatest guitarist of all time. You must remember that he was barely in his 20's when this was recorded imagine what might have been - Thanks for the post Hendrix - Juiceman
I have been lucky enough to spend 57 years on Gods green earth-----and one of the great joys of my life has been the ABB. The original band was untouchable===no one comes close
@28zebra - 57 here also Bro - from Manhattan beach - back on the block weekends would always have a turntable somebodies home playing ABB & sippin' on Gold Can -COORS no Coors light in those days - trips to the colorado river with ski baots & ABB on the 8 tracks - all the way from the coast- Wail On Sky Dog
Thanks for sharing this. It's always great to hear a different take. I especially like the ending -- around 13:27 gives me the chills. But I have to say that it's missing something on the WPII recording. *That one*, man, that's the sweetest live performance I've ever heard, of any genre. The transition there between the two songs is literally breath-taking, a spiritual experience for sure. If you don't know what I'm talking about check out Dreams Disc 3 track 1 6:30-9:30.
