Go right on ahead and give your rat a bath. Like you said, it will not give him a cold unless you leave hime wet. The only other thing that could be bad is if you over bathe him. . . it could dry out his skin. I suspect you know what you are doing. Good for you for cleaning all of that dust off of him. The dust itself could cause an upper respiratory infection.
Aww, you can just see the indignation in his cute little face... :-D I've got a couple of rats, and yeah, they do need baths sometimes when they've been rolling around in something I'd rather they don't ingest, or if their fur starts getting stained. Otherwise it really isn't necessary, as has been stated numerous times, because they clean themselves.
... There are millions of pets being abandoned every day. The last thing you people should be hollering and moaning about is a fancy rat being smothered with love and care.
your rat is really well behaved...one of mine once fall accidentaly in the bathtube and since then whenver she hears water she panics, for nothing she would let me bath her....my two younger rats quite like water but not to be bathed they want to explore it on their own
Holy smokes, that Dumbo is huge. Now from what I hear, Dumbos get pretty big. Will a normal fancy rat get about that size? Just wondering because I have one and can't tell if she's a baby or just small. She's about half his size!
why don't you understand that it is not nessesary to do this.....it's not natural. Rats can clean themselves AND if you keep them right, they don't get dirty... my rats have special ground to dig holes and there still is no need... even the VET's here know that it's not good for them...only in America people seem to be to ignorant to notice that this is animal abuse... and rats do like water... if they can explore it on there own...
@Darkmausi So the fact that when we had him out, and he got covered in dust from under some furnature, I should have left him alone? The reason for illness after receiving a bath is that people don't take the time to dry them. That would be like you wearing you clothes soaking wet untill they dried. Yeah that could cause a cold. Mind you he ever got sick. I'm curious what exactly your vets are telling you, specifically why they say it's "abuse" I just don't buy it.
@TooManySnakes I dont understand why people are saying giving a rat a bath is abuse lol, its neccesary if your rat gets sticky, or dirty, and needs help cleaning it off :P
@Darkmausi For real? People buy their kids pets, and let them starve to death because nobody cares for them and THIS is animal cruelty. Our Hammy loved us, we loved him. Go waste your hate on a more worthy cause.
@TooManySnakes fine than let you pets suffer oh no wait a forgot, just some days ago a saw a wild rat taking a shower with a tiny bar of soap in its hand, so you are right they must really love it !!!
@Darkmausi I'd like to point out that I never said he enjoyed it, so why do you need to put words into my mouth to try and prove me wrong? I mean, if we're playing that way then I can call you an idiot, because this will not cause ear or respiratory infections. But as far as cruelty goes I guess I should just let them live in filth then. No little bars of soap in the wild... then again last I knew rats didn't live in plastic igloos in the wild either. Pick your fight, if you're against
the keeping of animals, fine that's your perogative. Or are you against the bathing of pet rats if they get into a mess? Or you're like the majority on here who love to spout off at the drop of a hat, being ignorant about their cause with absolutely no debate skills, merely an uneducated opinion.
don't get worked up, he might have been being sarcastic... he might have meant "are all rat testicles so HUGE?" either way some vet offices do offer a rat neutering procedure for way too much money.
Its actually better to neuter there for like 100 bucks cuz when they get older they have a nice chance of tumors and it will cost bout $700 to do surgery to remove them but that will leave u broke and your rat stressed!
Wow. To the people saying it's not good to bathe your rat. Look it up idiots. They say you should bathe your rat once a month at the very least! Beautiful rat you have btw ^^ I have two myself :3

@Pifferfish Look who's talking about spelling. The word is "advice," not "advise," not to mention you didn't punctuate the word 'don't'. And don't give me any BS about it being "just a typo." Our rats are tame, and very trusting. I've been breeding sweeties for years now and I assure you from experience, you can bathe a rat and some even play in water.
@Sararat95 Excuse me, but I've had pet rats for over 25 years, and I know for a fact that you CAN and in some cases SHOULD bathe your rat. You just don't need to do it more than a few times a year. It won't hurt them or make them sick. They're rats, not chinchillas. Yes, it upsets SOME rats, but it doesn't actually scare them. Rats are very good swimmers. They just don't like getting wet. If you REALLY knew a lot about rats, you'd know all this.
I agree with everything but the baby shampoo as there have been reports that it dries out the skin and can create rashes and lesions on rats. Otherwise, just like a self-cleaning cat, you can give your rat a bath. As any breeder!
@Sararat95 actualy you can bath a rat as long as you dont get its ears or face wet, and use kitten shampoo, so oviously dont know that much about rats, think next time you type on youtube.
my boyfriend has a fancy rat named weezy...he's all tan and carries all his weight in his butt.....its like, tiny triangle head, BUTT, tail. he would panic in water no matter how slow we introduced him, so we use some no tears, massage in shampoo that smells like baby shampoo....i love rats. i bought a naked baby one. so cute. named him wilbur cuz he looks like a piglet.
i have 2 fancys one is really fat but he got really atched to me so somtimes he sleeps in bed with me he just lays under my shoulder my otherone i just recently got but they get along alot i got the second because my aunt she is a vetenarin and she said my rat would get depressed when im gone along time so i wanted to get him a freind my rat has been healthyer ever since
no you dont, they shouldnt usually be bathed at all as it washes all the natural oils out of their skin causing them to have dry itchy skin, if a rat smells or is dirty or has food on him or something, its best to give them a wipe down with a scent free baby wipe.
This is so cruel and i know it ive had years of experience with many different rats and this IS un called for. Hes struggling, scared nervous and probably wont like you as much when you do that. also the way your squeezing and pulling him around is painful to watch
@MCRFREAK997 How in any way is this cruel? It is obvious they love their animal, sometimes they just need a bath, even if they do clean themselves. It's the same as a dog not wanting a bath but we do it anyways. Stop looking into too much, the rat was in no pain, it just wasnt in the mood to be bathed.
We don't bathe our rats regularly, however he had gotten dirty and was not taking care of it himself. Also, it's not in his nature to be scared of us, while an unusual situation for him, it certainly did not change his affection toward us.
RabidNurse, the only thing that needs to be avoided is getting water in the ears, as it can cause irritation. But remember, rats are amazing swimmers and many live in very watery areas in the wild. ;)
Do rats make better pets than hamsters? Ive had a hamster before, it wasnt really mean, but when he did bite it hurt like fuck! Made me bleed once. It wasnt even provoked.
So, do rats bite as hard or as commonly as hamsters? Please dont say just when theyre scared, because my hamster wasnt scared when he would bite me--hed just do it.
Rats are much more social than hamsters, and also less inclined to bite. The average pet rat will NEVER bite his or her owner. But, when they DO bite, and I mean really bite, they do bite harder than hamsters. But this would require quite a large amount of provocation on the victim's part.
If ya look at my video response you'll see I think yer rat has a long lost twin...lol...the pretty much look exactly the same..even the white streak on the head...lol

The only scenario I can think that would call for a soap bathe would be somethem so sticky that it would pick up stains.
Well these people seem well intended.
Then one should use a dish pan with the warm water carefully tested for the correct warmth.
Then the same with a rinse pan.Have a very soft towel to absorb the water.

Kazukeee 3 years ago
the lady at the store said that they live 3-5 years when i bought mine.
ThoseGoshDarnKids 2 years ago
You have been badly fooled.
Kazukeee 2 years ago 2
Interesting note: I'm watching History Channel on history of rats, and they said the the oldest living record is 7 years and 4 months.
Just casually telling you, thought it might interest you...

hey thats not the way to bath them.. he doesnt like it
microbot23 3 years ago 3
This is so cruel and i know it ive had years of experience with many different rats and this IS un called for. Hes struggling, scared nervous and probably wont like you as much when you do that. also the way your squeezing and pulling him around is painful to watch
MCRFREAK997 3 years ago 3
@MCRFREAK997 How in any way is this cruel? It is obvious they love their animal, sometimes they just need a bath, even if they do clean themselves. It's the same as a dog not wanting a bath but we do it anyways. Stop looking into too much, the rat was in no pain, it just wasnt in the mood to be bathed.
OutlawBee 1 year ago
lol is this a breeder or is your snake just pampered?
and also the rat is pretty cute either way :P
scjason420 3 years ago
Snakes are pampered for sure, but this guy was a stud we kept friendly with. A big sweety.
TooManySnakes 3 years ago
Hey, he's a smart rat. Bathing rats IS unnecessary... poor thing, he's scared.
WilliamTheSlayer 3 years ago
We don't bathe our rats regularly, however he had gotten dirty and was not taking care of it himself. Also, it's not in his nature to be scared of us, while an unusual situation for him, it certainly did not change his affection toward us.
TooManySnakes 3 years ago
how can anyone say he doesnt like it! how do they know? to me he looks like he doesnt mind plus rats love water anyway.
juicyjamesy 3 years ago
Ask any PROPER rat breeder what do they think about bathing rats and I'm absolutely sure that you will get same reaction as from the people here.
Letting a rat to play in the water is one thing, but forcing it to "take a bath" with shampoo while you are squeazing it is another!
Kazukeee 3 years ago
most rodent breeders i know dont particularly care about the welfare of the animal they breed them for money
juicyjamesy 3 years ago 2
Well, that happens too. We are talking about different kinds such activity as "having a rat as a pet", therefore I have nothing to say to you.
Cheers.

So you're saying I should've let lice kill my rat instead of giving it baths that saved her life?
SpinelessScales 2 years ago
lol!
Do you really think that just bathing a rat kills lices?
Kazukeee 2 years ago
using the proper shampoo, yes. i had to treat my rat for lice when i first got her and bathing her worked.
stop being a pompous ass.

Isn't it bad to wash rats or is it just hamsters? I know for a fact it's not good to bathe hamsters that way.
GreaseGun 3 years ago
most hamsters originate from dessert like habitats they use the sand as water to clean. or saw dust in a cage : )
juicyjamesy 3 years ago
I know that but my point is that isn't what they were doing in this video. I thought rats used sand to.
GreaseGun 3 years ago
do all rats get that big? or is it just the males that get that big?
boxerbaby 3 years ago
Fancy rats are bred to be larger and the males are larger. i have seen them the size of guinea pigs.
juicyjamesy 3 years ago

are these the ones you feed to your snakes? because that wouldn't be cool lol..
MoreSnakes 3 years ago
RabidNurse, the only thing that needs to be avoided is getting water in the ears, as it can cause irritation. But remember, rats are amazing swimmers and many live in very watery areas in the wild. ;)
VampirexLament 3 years ago
Do rats make better pets than hamsters? Ive had a hamster before, it wasnt really mean, but when he did bite it hurt like fuck! Made me bleed once. It wasnt even provoked.
So, do rats bite as hard or as commonly as hamsters? Please dont say just when theyre scared, because my hamster wasnt scared when he would bite me--hed just do it.
SystemXpander 3 years ago
Rats are much more social than hamsters, and also less inclined to bite. The average pet rat will NEVER bite his or her owner. But, when they DO bite, and I mean really bite, they do bite harder than hamsters. But this would require quite a large amount of provocation on the victim's part.
VampirexLament 3 years ago 2
yeah if you handle them they will never bite and they love to play, they are awsome

That is way so funny because I wanted someone to do that. The rat is like no no not d bath! Anything but the bath and after the bath is over couple mintues later dinner time 4 d snake! D rat is like first u wash me, now ur going feed me! I bet after the bath u fed it to the snake right??? Do it again wash a rat again n feed it to the snake all in 1 video comment back! I want to know if d rat in dis video got fed to d snake after u wash it! use soap next time when u wash it n make d rat scream!
