Okay if you actually knew what context this was set in you wouldnt be arguing. Margaret Thatcher was closing down all non-profitable mines, all the men that were running away worked in the mines, they striked and protested because they wanted a pay-rise. The police had to call the riot squad, because they had probably started a fight and this is why they'[re chasing Jamie, and yes its extreme, but its a film and showing it in its extremity is more effective.

It's a damned good film!

Your context is WRONG! Mines had decades of life left in them, the miners struck to keep work in the communities and not to languish on the dole, it was nothing to do with pay rises. The fascist police force (brought from the south of England) had been bought and paid for earlier and were now earning their pieces of silver, supported by the rich Media bosses propaganda. It all worked, enjoy paying the massive fuel bills and being treated as a serf at work, if you can find any!
