I would not call Buddy a joke of a fighter. He won 47 of 51 fights by KO, and had 23 first round KO's. A pretty solid chin on him too. Although never heavyweight champ, he has no comparison to Primo Carnera, who was indeed a joke of a fighter.
ya think joe could punch? man had concrete in his fists. and buddy was no pushover. got up when lots would have just laid there. somewhere there's a smaller heavyweight out there who can do the same thing to the klitckos. and i'm not dissin the brothers. just saying that styles make fights and today we don't have anybody out there with the talent or heart to step inside with them. if so they'd take away that constant jab and i think would win. a young tyson would be interesting fight
Joe Louis was a gentleman in and out of the ring, in one fight Joe donated his entire purse to the war effort . The government rewarded his patriotic generosity
by having the IRS haunt him unmercifully to his death.
'The only way I could have beaten Louis that night was with a baseball bat', was a quote from Baer after the fight. Louis was the greatest pure boxer pound for pound of any fighter, even surpassing sugar ray robinson, when he was in his elimant, hall of famers like max shmelling, Max Baer(who was named second hardest pound for pound puncher in 1993), Buddy Baer(Who had 23 first round knockouts) stood absolutely no chance.
This is Joe Louis at his best. People and experts who were alive when this fight took place said Louis was the greatest ever on this night., They said he was better than he was for Schmeling. Thisis coming from people who lived through the Ali and Dempsey eras.
@Rockyfan10060 i think when someone does pretty good against louis in the rematch he akes sure he does a good job on them like this and schemling both out urly
@cet0708 confront the match with Carnera that have a less hard punch that BB and stay several rounds while BB felt like a pinball unable even to using his reach for keeping Joe at the bay.
Five pounds heavier and I think five years after the first fight. Louis was an extremely intelligent fighter who always learned from his first meeting with somebody. Nobody did as well second time round. Baer made it easy for Louis with his non-existent movement and failure to hold when in trouble, though.
Budd Schulberg hasn't got him top 5 nor has Angelo Dundee. Most that have him too high are usually older guys who rate old school fighters higher and disregard the more modern fighters. Johnson was the first black heavyweight champ and a great defensive fighter when matched against the mostly smaller and wide punch throwing men of the period. Whether you judge by achievement or head to head there are plenty to be placed ahead of him.
sorry, but you fail.. i have been looking at lists all morning and though they were widely differing in many ways, Johnson was never lower than 5th on any of them and he was usually top 3...likewise, Ali and Louis were never out of the top 5...
Marciano, surprisingly, dropped out of the top 5 on a few lists.. but not mine..
I fail? Who made you the judge? And I'd like to know how you decide your rankings. Having both Johnson and Marciano in top 5 is interesting to say the least...
Johnson- 2nd longest reign, 3rd most title defenses.. however, he fought dozens of non-title bouts that by modern standards would have been title defenses and that would have put him well over 30 and far past Louis..
Louis also had really and 8 year reign like Jack did.. 4 years of his 12 years were interrupted by the war..
Rocky made only 6 defenses, fewer than Ezzard Charles, but he was undefeated, cleaned out the division and was 5-0 against other heavyweight champs.. so i put him 4th..
Johnson's one loss, to Willard, was when he was 39 years old and severely out of shape.. older than when Ali lost to Spinks AND Holmes and older than Louis when he lost to Rocky..
of those 4 only Ali and Louis lost to other champions in their prime..
Most of Johnson's title defenses were against palookas like Fireman Jim Flynn and Frank Moran. He also spent his whole title reign ducking Sam Langford.
in my opinion i think louis would beat anyone except ali who i think would be too fast and had the style to beat him. Louis was so good in his prime though sad to see what happened later on
mmm so norton was the greatest cause actually always kicked alis ass, even if desicions always went to ali....maybe u r right about the style but that cant be considered when thinking about the greatest,....
boxinglad: Louis would have caught Ali in early rounds. Look what Louis did to John Henry Lewis in one round. John Henry was faster than Ali a proven fact.
I have heard that too, can't find the footage but do you really think this guy was as big and strong, had as good footwork, was as smart, as fit, as tough, had more heart and a better chin than Ali? I do not, Ali had a style to beat Louis
Damn he beat Baer down here. He couldnt handle him like that the first time. Baer send Joe through the ropes. Not as brutal as Marciano did though. Shame he didnt either then there would be footage of Buddy vs Max. None of there fights was recorded I dont think.
Sugar Ray maybe ...Henry Armstrong maybe ...but NO WAY is Marciano greater than Louis ..Louis' body of work totally eclipses Rocky's accomplishments and the fact that he retired undefeated
I just watched Buddy Baer as an actor on an episode of Gunsmoke. Marshall Dillon beat him up pretty bad also.

the great Joe Louis would have done the same to the great George Foreman, Why? Louis was just too fast for Foreman, but Ali was too fast for them all

It's like watching a poor mans Dimitrenko against Louis, Buddy Baer was a joke of a fighter.

Anyone know if there was any truth to Baer being nearly crippled in a car acident before the fight.
He used this rumor as an excuse after the fight.

I don't know but he did say that the Louis he fought in this fight could have beaten any heavyweight who ever lived.

Louis really had the Giant's number in this rematch. The first meeting was a wild brawl.

Louis- 5-3
