I'm a Turandot fanatic.....Nilsson Dimitrova Marton....the best of all times, but this is really interesting and my favourite one within the "modern" Turandot . Unusual and "beautifully imperfect" voice.
though Turandot is not Violetta or Mimi, still you need a certain sense of legato...And you need to sing "in tono", which means not approximately. As a musician, i have to say that she has a beautiful instrument, but already worn here. As a opera lover, i have to say she misses the best parts of the aria 3:16 until the end... Anyway, interesting stage direction. And, per la Madre Santa, the C at the end...
I particularly like the staging - David Pountney must have thoroughly though over it! In this version Turandot is first shown as an apparently unaccesible princess for Calaf, but subsequently in the production, as I remember, when all Calaf's answers are correct, she falls down - this symbolizes that the princess's glory has disappeared! The voices are very good as well=)
The scenery is perfect, beautifil... What a pity that the singers are not the best... they sing just horrible the end of this aria is just... disgusting with these singers.
The registration is too low and dark which makes she does not reach the top. You could here that also in her 2002 Elektra performance at the Met. However, in later years, she has changed her technique which enabled her to achieve the top notes much lighter: I heard her as Elektra in Munich 2008 and she was splendid with every top note spot on.
OH NO ! ! Surely this is not typical of her singing. In fact, I've heard her and she sang much better than this. Yes, there is power, but no control. I think she was "off" here. Any human can have an "off" night. But this IS dreadful.
Hmm, very interesting comments about this - my favourite aria in the piece. A total warhorse which, in my humble opinion, is fantastic. Seen and heard many Turandots. Remember she's meant to be as hard as nails despite her situation in this part of the opera. She's hardly Mimi or Violetta! lol
well aye, lots of vibrato controlled though, powerful, full of colour. Don't confuse her with colorotura folks! However I do appreciate we can't all like everyone. te each their own. eh? lol
Sounds like the goose that's about to lay the golden egg! She has poor control of her voice which borders on shrieking not singing! More importantly for me, when sets and costumes substitute for profound artistry and sublime vocal production, opera is in more trouble than I ever imagined! Radames, you are the person who introduced me to the divine Leonid Sobinov! I know your taste to be excellent, selective and informed! This video is not in keeping with your inspired self!

she's absolutely the type of voice that Puccini wanted for Turandot!
she's amazing, powerful, evil...she's got all Turandot must have!

Now that is just irritating and grating to the ears! ICK ICK ICK! Whoever hired her should be horse whipped.

You probably should have heard it live to have really enjoyed it, not much nuance or excitement just lots of vibrato.

Well her character doesn´t cover her low-pitched voice. the high c is a low h, that´s really, really bad, almost funny.
But she has a firm look in her face! (if any in the audience may see it 30 feet above the stage floor)

Gabriele Schnaut is one of the best singers for this role, and the best opera with her is Elektra. I love her
