  • amazing

  • Terrific horn blower.

  • Wonderful! I recently discovered "Blues-ette," and it is a masterpiece. Curtis Fuller is a true jazz great, and I'm happy to hear he's still putting it out there. God bless him!

  • whoa is he really holding his trombone like that?... Cool he sounds good.

  • Curtis was slammin' it! I've got his 1957 album The Opener playing in the background.

  • Your his Grandson? Cool!

  • Thats awesome!

  • @jadakiss1983

Jade, I had the honor of recording in Atlanta with your grandfather. What a wonderful and sweet man he is. I'll see him this weekend too, as we will be performing together in the Atlanta Jazz Festival. Within minutes of meeting him I loved him and thought of him as the grandfather we all wish we had.

You are very talented....it must be the genes!

  • i play in a high school jazz band and we may actually be getting the oppurtunity to play with curtis fuller this year, thats gonna be insane, he's unbelievable

  • i wonder how old is that dude at that video

  • He will be 74 on December 15th.

  • Can anyone here help me find the Curtis Fuller Transcribed Solos book, I can't seem to find it anywhere.

  • Curtis Fuller!!!!! fuck yes!!! I wish I could play like that!

  • love curtis fuller. I personally dont think a jazz solo has to be clean and accurate. Its an expression of life and life is certainly not clean or refined.

  • Ever heard his NEVERLAND? Sublime.

  • I totaly thought this dude played on a valve trombone with how clean he plays, nope. He's just got killer chops. This guys gonna be at the lionel hampton festival this year, can't wait.

  • Are you serious? I'm playing there with my jazz big band.

  • It's difficult with Curtis Fuller: musicians love him. I think, he's an uneven player, like the early Donald Byrd. For me ,JJ is in the olymp! Fuller's solo here is not his best, maybe.Listen to the Jazztet stuff! But thanks for the video!

  • You guys can talk junk about Curtis Fuller all you want, but I know if you guys ever played with him. He'd still kill you. Check out the Mosaic album. He plays a solo on children of the night on there. If you think you can outplay Fuller, put a video on youtube.

  • To trombizzle69 and freeeeeeedy,

Check out Curtis Fuller w/ Red Garland.

To compare JJ to anyone is irrelevant. JJ paved the way for everyone, and there's no comparison. Curtis Fuller loved JJ, and he was labeled a JJ clone at one point. As with all artists, you have to check out several recordings or performances (if possible) to see why they deserve the recognition that they get.

Also, check out Art Blakey and the Messengers Caravan. Curtis Fuller is purty nice on that one too.

  • "Five Spot After Dark" . . . where?

  • gran solo es uno de mis grandes referentes grande eres curtis lo mas grande. soy de chile y te admiro mi nombre es marcelo amldonado trombonista de chile

  • This is yet another example of Curtis Fuller struggling to make anything happen. I'll never understand how he got to play with so many great players. Maybe he really was their drug dealer as rumor has it...

  • Sorry, but for me j.j. had a lot more going on. Curtis is never great harmonically. He's not making a lot of sense of the changes here, and he's nowhere on the Blue Train album. This is hard shit, but i don't believe j.j. would have been caught out.

  • This solo isnt that great, but I thought he was amazing on the Blue Train album for sure

  • he just has a different style than most players. his licks are way different. i definately like players like j.j. and rosolino better, but curtis fuller is still a great player.

  • He's coming out of JJ! He sounded a lot like JJ when he came out! Anyways, the man is like 73, playing with one lung, and he's STILL got heart. I say you should listen to Curtis Fuller with Red Garland. I used to think he wasn't as good until I heard that album. The guy has speed and clarity like no one else.

  • Great performance!

Do you have the piano solo, too?

  • If J.J. had the Blakey band behind him theres no tellin where this stimuli might have taken him. Few of the jazz messengers members were better when they left Blakeys band. Few exceptions

  • A lot of people prefer JJ over Fuller and I don't know why. JJs solos rarely hit me in the gut the way Fuller's solos do. It's like hes just spittin fire at you.

  • If J.J. had the Blakey band behind him theres no tellin where this stimuli might have taken him. Few of the jazz messengers members were better when they left Blakeys band. Few exceptions

  • Curtis is the greatest EVER- His sense of melody and his timing......
