It's nice to see that City of Toronto is now collecting electronics, but I would like to know what happens to them after that. Are the electronics efficiently & safely recycled by responsible facilities, or do they get shipped overseas for improper "recycling" like most e-waste? This makes a big difference for me, since the latter is both environmentally costly & a health hazard to those who recycle the items.
You guys aren't serious right? These commercials are annoying; almost more then Spence Diamonds ... Not to mention there are companies who will PAY you for your old electronics ... You may think this is saving the world but all it's doing is wasting tax payers money.
wow! glad to see that city hall doesn't yake itself too seriously -- other sectors of this stiffy establishment could learn a thing or two about connecting with iys citizenry :)
what is done with the old electronics there? in Seattle area it takes an act of God to find places like this . I think Goodwill does it a few times a year and other places that do take this stuff keep it under wraps and don't advertise it ,cause they get a tax write-off but don't want to do crap.
As soon as oil /plastic is scarce ,more cities will be also screaming "We Want it !!" ,but by then they'll be competing with the private sector and poop out of luck.
i already paid 20 bucks of recycling fees on the monitor i bought, and you say you take it to recyle? so why the hell do i have to pay the city or government 20 bucks???? this is hopeless
this is an AMAZING and so fun to watch commercial. the most important thing is the result: Please guys at City of Toronto keep us posted on how effective is the idea of this ad, and how many people are giving back the electronic waste. Thanks. Marco
this IS a great idea, however the City is no where close to having enough staff or trucks to follow through on this at this time. Most of it is still going to land fill! I think this add campaign is a little pre-mature.
As the rest of the spot is made poorly on purpose, I imagine the 'backslash' is part of the sens of humour of the spot. The address does scroll across the bottom while he says it, after all.
That is REALLY well done. The only thing is that this thing here / is a "slash", a "backslash" looks like \ Some people with accessibility issues and older software may have a problem with that.
Remember you can check your collection calendar or the toronto "ewaste" web pages for more information. (we can't make the link here but it is on the description of the video :0)
@karahiltz Yes! Electronics go out on garbage day. Put larger items beside your Garbage Bin or multiple smaller items in the plastic E-waste bag provided in new 2010/2011 curb side collection calendar (if no bag, then use an open cardboard box for small electronics).
So..Who do I call? B/c I have a big TV sitting outside on my lawn..

It's not like the city of Toronto hasn't come up with funny PSAs in the past. Remember the "keep our lake clean" ads with the nutty scientists?
This one, however, is the best so far.

@sjcrw that's why you pay the recycling fees - so that the city can provide the service.

not knowing the difference between a slash and a back-slash might explain why these guys are hauling trash for a living.

I love the Gorilla mask aka reference to the Active Surplus store on Queen.
My only gripe is that Vince says "backslash" when clearly the URL is just a "slash."
Despite that, the city of Toronto is pretty tech-savvy.
hmsvicky 1 year ago 5
@hmsvicky - we note you are referencing the audio here on the backslash ... Yo, Vince - 'ya shoulda' said forward slash or slash!
thecityoftoronto 1 year ago 5
@hmsvicky I found that the "Backslash" fit perfectly with everything else they did lol
The mixed up shirts (Want it We!)
and the SPEAKERS. SPEAKERS. SPEAKERS!!
or better when they point at us for the "we" part and then at themselves for the "your" part
BRILLIANT.

@deathstar79 Here are the names:
Chuck is Nug (yes, just a one word name) his twitter handle is @Nug13
Vince is Marte Adams (Marte doesn't have a twitter handle)
The lady at the curb is Marsha Mason (twitter handle is @mowsh)
