Dalton and Simpson nailed the existential ennui of the life of a rag 'n bone man in the West london of the early seventies in one go , Joannne Lumley or no Joanne Lumley
That's because you don't know what the comment originated from. - You're jumping in gthe middle of a conversation. - I know it's a American remake. - If you knewthe whole conversation you wouldn't find need to tell me that.
John Laroquette starred in a failed American remake of England's FAWLTY TOWERS. Tho we actually already had an American version of Fawlty Towers ... It was titled NEWHART!
Joanna Lumley (the actress who plays the daughter) is the most extraordinary woman. She recently led a public campaign for the right of Nepalese soldiers who served in the British army to stay in Britain. And she won. She's much more than just a pretty face.
Thanks for posting this video. I have heard of Steptoe and Son, however this is the first time I've actually viewed one of their programs. Thanks again!
dear joanna, i am a street entertainer in dublin and she gave a little girl 5 euros to come up and give me, early on a spring morn a couple of years back, her smile was like a beam of sunshine.
Well, you got an idea of what Joanna Lumley looked like with long hair before she got that killer Dorothy Hamill wedge for "The New Avengers" four years later.
if it wasn't for Steptoe and Son there wouldn't of been a Sanford and Son!, It is yet again thanks to us fantastic british writers who end up creating superb television entertainment for Americans to steal or Rip Off as their own due to lack of creativity BBC COMEDY RULES!!!!!
@DancetilluDie77 That is so wrong of you to say. The Americans have come up with some genuinely funny sitcoms themselves. Creativity is to be appreciated no matter where it comes from. Cheers
And of course there's the cultural barrier. which used to be as wide as the Atlantic. Which maybe is slowly becoming narrower because of imported ideas and TV.
Opinions and arseholes dude. This is British comedy. Sanford, even though using an idea borrowed from this, was American comedy. As different as chalk and cheese. Both countries have their share of good comedies and comedians that some of us, no matter which side of the pond, can have a good laugh at. The main problem is the language barrier. Stronger accents and dialects in Britain which most Americans have a hard time understanding.
In reality these two never got on and had a total hatred of each other, Wilfred Bramball intentionally turning up late at the studios and making things hard for Harry H. Corbett
Wilfred Brambell nearly appeared in '200 Motels - the musical' before he realised he couldn't cut the mustard as Frank Zappa's bass player and purportedly turned tail and ran screaming from the set .......
Wilfrid Brambell constantly being referred to as "a dirty old man. He also starred alongside The Beatles in their film A Hard Day's Night, playing Paul McCartney's grandfather, constantly being referred to as "very clean"
Harold had his social aspirations severely curtailed by living with an old person like Wilfred Brambell. No amount of Joanne Cumely and Herrethhhhhh sherry could ever conceivably make up for that disadvantage, Kipling cakes not withstanding
were messrs. Galton and Simpson bleedin' prescient with their promotion, well ahead of it's time, of the humble baguette, sold to an unsuspecting, yet eager, seventies British television-viewing public as something only the choppers of a French lorry driver might dare to approach with any degree of certainty.....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
come on, he's a 'rag and bone' man, he's living with an old person (borderline alzheimers in my book) that the word GIT falls miserably short of describing in his awfulness, and he brings home her, in spite of the canned laughter, and she looks like Joanna Lumley (it's not likely, is it?)....never mind mater is the real shag on legs
Wilfred Bramble had a lot of talent, and could also play "posh" characters when required, but as the elderly totter or rag, iron & bone man, Steptoe Sr, he created such a vivid impression of coarseness, scruffiness and grubbiness, that you could almost smell his serious case of B.O..
Some US sitcoms are excellent whilst others are incredibly stupid. A fairly reliable sign of unwatchable ones is a long sofa, much "canned" laughter, and embarrassing, redundant explanations of the dumb 'jokes'.
Remember the immortal lines uttered by Harry H Corbett "You dvuwrty old man!!", this show reflects the era it was created in, post- war ,working class society. With a little seaside postcard cheekiness, thrown in for good measure.
The point in debating has nothing to so with insulting or say unproven crap about the person you're debating with. - "Funnier" is a self opinion. - And I live in the U.S. and not many people know about Steptoe. - So it's obvious you believe what you believe because you are UK and I the same because I am US. But unlike you I don't go as far to call Steptoe Crap. - I don't get how you can insult something just because "YOU" don't like it. -
Well I can easily the say samething about ur opinion that it's not funny as self opinion too. However it is pretty well known that u yanks have stolen every show that we've created. If u want more proof search red dwarf (the u.s version) rearguard (the u.s version of dad's army). Every englishman knows this and therefore they are crappy versions of the british versions of the same show. P.s learn to take criticism or fuck off
I never said that Steptoe is not funny. - I never said anything negative about anything - You seem to only hear want to hear (or your eyes change the words to what you want them to be) - Just to pick a fight and curse someone out like a little immature child or something. - And you call us yanks? - I hate the American "image" that most other countries have of us, but from your ignorant responses - you seem more US than I do.
The "shitty" Am. version was one of the top rated sitcoms of the 70's - So what ever you say about can't be proven.
Saying that I don't find it funnier than another sitcom - isn't the same as saying it's not funny. - I never said it's not funny. Unlike you guys I don't come on here to diss. - When I have no facts. -
well neither what u say can be proven as well. but if u ask anyone about steptoe & son they'll definitely know it and say "oh yeah great sitcom". Whilst sanford & son well nobody will know that cos that's american which was only toprated in america. The bbc releases more dvds on british comedy sitcoms globally than any other group mate and that's a fact.
What do you mean what i say can't be proven? - I'm not on hear making any claims. - All I said is that I like one better than the other. And that Sanford was a top sitcome of the 70's here which is true and can be proven. And you can't ask "anyone" about steptoe - maybe anyone in your country, but no one knows of steptoe here just like not many would know about sanford there.
secondly it doesnt really make any sense that u say that something is funny but personally u dont find it funny. If somebody doesnt find something funny then he wouldnt laugh...simple as that really
Dude - stop putting words in my writting. - I never said I didn't find Steptoe funny. - maybe that's what you want to hear so that you can began a fight or something, but that's not what I said.
And how can I be the only one in the world that watches American sitcoms? - For you to say something like that just because you disagree with someone is very childish.
well that's whole point of debating m8, whether u like what I say or not it's up to u. But I think most people on here would agree with me on this subject as steptoe & son is a lot funnier than that american crap. That being said it's not my fault or our fault that u dont find this show funny
I have always laughed at people who engaged in angry banter over youtube postings, but I will put my foot up yer ass if you badmouth "Sanford & Son." Matt, you come across as a real dick. (Look it up if that doesn't translate across "the pond."
I feel like you feel. Matt and some others on here can't graps the concept that everyone has a different sense of humor. - Just because they don't find Sanford funny doen't mean it's not funny.
To them Benny Hill is funnier than Richard Prior. - Everyone's intitled to their opinion, but you don't have to be a dick about it, especially when you have no proof backing that up.
onn1320, thanx. I suspect Matt2house is some bloke whose life is so devoid of distinction that riling up people on youtube with dicklike behavior is his only claim to fame.
Oh - so you're prejustice - which is not far from racist. - prejustice agaist culture is every bit as ignorant as racism. - I can understand if you hate a certain American for a certain reason, but to hate someone because of where they were born is just plan ignorant. - Dude, you are British by "chance" - You had little to do with that.
I never assumed it was only on his passports. - I did assume that he was 100% British -
When I say British by "chance" - that means he did not choose to be British - just as I didn't choose to be American - No one has control over what they was born as.
Hince - him not liking American Culture and Traditions is a prejustice which is cousins with racism.
It's also sterotypical to not like Am. Culture because there many different types of Americans and we're not all the same.
that's cos the yanks stole the concept of steptoe & son and came up with their own "sanford & son". That's why this is more funnier cos it was british made originally but the bleeding yanks stole it.
Sorry, but I don't see how this is 'funnier' - Could be just as funny, and I respect it as 'original', but I don't see how it's 'funnier' than the remake. This guy has a lot less manners than Fred in the remake, but that doen't make it funnier.
well that's the whole point, the oldman steptoe never had any manners and that's what winds up his son harold. so that's what makes this funnier than that american shite version. If u watch a bit more episodes then u would understand where I'm coming from if u know what I'm saying like.
less manners = funny is a self opinion. -Just like some people may think prop stand up is funnier than joke telling - it's a preference. - I watched a few episodes on youtube and I don't find it that much more funnier than Sandford. Which you call shite? - Don't know if it's the same as crap, but Sandford is one of the most successful sitcomes of the 70's here in the U.S. and would put most sitcoms of today to shame.- So it can't be crap. -
lol ur only saying that because ur an american, sanford & son didnt exactly hit the world's audiences by a spark but steptoe & son certainly did. As u may know the bbc has released millions of dvds of steptoe & son overseas...why?......becoz everybody knows them just like monty python and it's british humour. Plus I have to disagree with sanford & son bringing today's sitcoms to shame as nobody in the world watches american sitcoms (except u yanks).
Dude - I saying that because it's what I read about Sanford and Son - During it's time it was one of the top rated sitcoms on TV. - I'm not just saying that - it's fact.
But Sanford didn't mess up Steptoe - It's only opinion when someone say one was funnier than the other. - That's no where near facts for the ratings that Sanford got in the 70's don't lie. + it's one of the most syndicated shows in the US. - Still getting plenty of run - I mean that star of the show his self was an established very funny comedian before the show started. - Can't speak for all US clones but Sanford was a success in the US
How come the Brits never re-run old sitcoms on TV? I ived in the UK from 1987-1992 and I never saw this, or TILL DEATH DO US PART, or BENNY HILL, or DOUBLE DECKERS, or any of the old PIPKINS episodes. But they did run old episodes of THUNDERBIRDS.
shame neither actor could accept the comedy role as a successful career. especially the actor who played harold steptoe. apprently, neither actor got on either. shame.
im trying to get as many of the show,s on dvd as i can ,its quite a shame that such comedy is,nt with us any more .or maybe its cause the greats of english comedy are,nt around no longer so we are left with what comes out today..which can,t hold a candle to Steptoe & Son an such well written comedy , best regards to all who enjoy this & other brilliant work .
This episode came out the year I was born 1972. But I grew up watching it as my parents were avid fans. I think I've seen them all, and each time I watch them it still makes me smile and laugh, so that can't be a bad thing :)

@onn1320 I hate all types of racism and prejudice, other than in regards to America, every sort of American is so American and that is an insult.

that's cos the yanks stole the concept of steptoe & son and came up with their own "sanford & son". That's why this is more funnier cos it was british made originally but the bleeding yanks stole it.

Sorry, but I don't see how this is 'funnier' - Could be just as funny, and I respect it as 'original', but I don't see how it's 'funnier' than the remake. This guy has a lot less manners than Fred in the remake, but that doen't make it funnier.
onn1320 3 years ago
well that's the whole point, the oldman steptoe never had any manners and that's what winds up his son harold. so that's what makes this funnier than that american shite version. If u watch a bit more episodes then u would understand where I'm coming from if u know what I'm saying like.
matt2house 3 years ago
less manners = funny is a self opinion. -
onn1320 3 years ago
lol ur only saying that because ur an american, sanford & son didnt exactly hit the world's audiences by a spark but steptoe & son certainly did. As u may know the bbc has released millions of dvds of steptoe & son overseas...why?......becoz everybody knows them just like monty python and it's british humour. Plus I have to disagree with sanford & son bringing today's sitcoms to shame as nobody in the world watches american sitcoms (except u yanks).
matt2house 3 years ago
Dude - I saying that because it's what I read about Sanford and Son - During it's time it was one of the top rated sitcoms on TV. - I'm not just saying that - it's fact.
onn1320 3 years ago
yes but only on american tv not internationally that's the difference old boy

@onn1320
yes in the usa maybe but in the uk no one i know has ever
heard of it maybe like most people in the usa dont know steptoe and son
but steptoe did come first and as for my part was much funnier
usa seem to ruin any copys of british comedys they buy
take one of the greatest british comedys dads army usa even messed that up
with the usa version
fattwat1 1 year ago
@fattwat1

MondoBeno 3 years ago
you can't have watched much tv then, i am english and this, benny hill, til death and fawlty towers were all over the tv back then!

shame neither actor could accept the comedy role as a successful career. especially the actor who played harold steptoe. apprently, neither actor got on either. shame.
geoffart 3 years ago
Thats right Brambell never rated Corbett as a serious actor. HHC couldn't shake off the role.

Look at the 1963 variety awards clip you can see the strain even way back then.

im trying to get as many of the show,s on dvd as i can ,its quite a shame that such comedy is,nt with us any more .or maybe its cause the greats of english comedy are,nt around no longer so we are left with what comes out today..which can,t hold a candle to Steptoe & Son an such well written comedy , best regards to all who enjoy this & other brilliant work .

This episode came out the year I was born 1972. But I grew up watching it as my parents were avid fans. I think I've seen them all, and each time I watch them it still makes me smile and laugh, so that can't be a bad thing :)
