  • I'm gonna buy Jaws, just so I could watch this scene.

  • A good read about the Indianapolis saga is 'In Harm's Way', by Doug Stanton.

  • @raynus1 That is an amazing book.

  • It always bothered me that they got the date wrong. We are talking about a MAJOR event in American history.

  • Ya know somethin about a Shark ,He's got lifeless eyes, Black eyes like a doll's eye,Ya don't think he's livin,Till he swms up and bites ya LOL

  • What an awesome story!

  • btw its said those were whaler sharks that took them

  • Two people got taken by a shark.

  • And true to form the American authorities blamed the sinking of the Indianapolis on the captain and had him stricken until a schoolkid in the 80 or 90's delved into the case and had him exonnerated....posthumously...of course.

  • Best scene in movie history. IMO

  • @laronmaron98 Shaw was drunk when they filmed this take. Shaw had been hitting the bottle for the entire shoot. The next day, they tried a few more takes with Shaw sober, and it just wasn't as believable than when he was drunk.

  • as good a scene as you'll ever see in any movie..robert shaw was easily one of the greatest actors ever. period.

  • Great film isn't limited to Citizen Kane and obscure titles from the 30s. This is one of the most captivating monologues you will ever see in film.

  • FUCKIN POINTLESS YA CUNTS!

  • BTW, I also heard that Shaw wrote most of this scene...or all of it. I'll try to get a link to these "rumors"...from what I remember they came from a reliable source...

  • @laronmaron98 I heard John Milius wrote it, maybe they both had a hand.

  • @sabbath7081, I can't remember the source, but the story I heard is that Shaw was so drunk Spielberg couldn't get him to complete the take, so they stopped shooting. The next day Shaw apologized to everyone on the set...then nailed it on the first try for the "master shot".

  • One of the best monologues in American film history. Good post man.

  • Awesome speech -long live Mr Quint!!

  • @johnnynou have you ever finished this movie

  • Rumor has it that Robert Shaw was indeed drunk for that scene. It pissed Steven Speilberg something awful but the rest of the film crew were so amazed and mesmerized by it that they shot it anyways

  • The best monologue in the best film ever made.

  • Sadly, the US Government court-martialed and convicted Captain McVay and made him a scape goat. Captain McVay had requested a destroyer escort but was denied. In court the facts were not used in his defence, and kept hidden that the US Intelligence had intercepted Japanese code revealing that 2 submarines were operating in Indianapolis's path yet told the Captain the path was clear.

The US Government killed these men and blamed their Captain.

Rotten bastards, nothing changed with their lies.

  • i Love Quint, Robert Shaw just brought this character alive, so sad that he died quite young, RIP Robert xxx

  • Hes a great actor and should have gotten an academy award for Jaws.

  • Truly one of the greatest monlogues ever. Great piece of advice I received while taking acting classes is this, pick an obscure monologue. Never choose a monologue that is well-known. Why? The whole time they will be comparing you to the actor that performed it. You do not want to be compared to Robert Shaw's Quint. No one will ever perform a more nuanced, unsettling and believable monologue than him. He actually makes you believe he was there. Lesson, choose another monologue.

  • @ calicocidd,

i agree that this is one of the best monologues ever filmed, strong scene built through great story telling and character. i love this part that i get goose bumps every time i watch it.

  • You know what scares me the most...the people who delivered that bomb not knowing what happened after their ship sunk. A 100'000 Japanese lost their lives in the blink of an eye...cos of the most destructive weapon ever conceived. Whatever shock or awe it might have had on the people of the world...those 1'100 men that went into the water... They didn't know... [:[

  • These were real actors w real dialogue. Robert Shaw was a great actor RIP :

check him out in the Sting w Robert Redford and Paul Newman.

"I'm talking about working for a livin' I'm talkin' bout sharkin'!!!"

  • The slow realiation that the monster is not out there-its with then- Both Quint's mind set and Irish style story or his threatening human palpable presence makes this the scariest scene ever. Spielberg-inspired to leave them with him.

  • A masterpiece in suspense. Scheider suddenly realises that the hell isn;t out there.

  • One of my favorite monologues in a movie.. I do an impersonation of Quint let me know what yall think parrotcreek youtube channel.

  • Wow... Just wow... One of the greatest monologues in cinema...

  • One of the greatest movie monologues ever, I sometimes watch Jaws just for this scene

  • UPDATE: After seeing 316 and 317 men survived, I did a lot of searching and found the right answer. Here it is:

The USS Indianapolis had 1,197 aboard when it went down. Only 317 survived. (Note: Some accounts refer to only 316 men, but this was due to an error in Navy records. A veterans' group of USS Indianapolis survivors lists 317 survivors).

  • I love the movie and have watched it at least a 1000 times. I just wish they had the date right .... On 30 July 1945, shortly after delivering critical parts for the first atomic bomb to be used in combat to the United States air base at Tinian, the ship was torpedoed by the Imperial Japanese Navy submarine I-58, sinking in 12 minutes. You see, my Uncle was one of the 316 men that survived. His best friend was also bitten in 1/2 by a white tip shark. Robert Shaw played that part great :)

  • I guess some asshole disliked this just for the hell of it.

  • God Damn I love this movie and this monologue. Today in drama, we got a project to do a monologue, any one we wanted, this scene immediately popped into my head. I've already got it memorized. :) Haha and yes my dad named me after Quint XD

  • It's a great scene...but here's to swimmin with bowlegged women...

  • The best scene in the entire movie!

  • Thanks for this, wonder why it's so hard to find a proper version though.

i also wonder why Shaw changed the actual date from the 30th to the 29th.

  • fucking video the bastard TV... this should be illegal!

  • I just love how as soon as Quint says the words "USS Indianapolis" Hooper immediately stops giggling and stares at him in awe. You can just tell he immediately realizes the full scope of the horror quint must have gone through, considering how infamous the Indianapolis incident is among shark enthusiasts. Great bit of acting by Richard Dreyfuss.

  • at least he fucking posted it and not some faggot remake or parody fuck off man, thanks for taking the time bdfly2929 ! :D

  • @BryanW1988 right on man!

  • @BryanW1988 I fucking agree........... too many piss takes off this clip on here.

  • I'm convinced when this movie was in theaters, you could hear a pin drop during this scene. He should get an Oscar this year for this performance back then

  • Regardless of all of the action in the movie, this scene is my favorite segment!

  • I have uploaded a quality version of this. Search under my account thepond99

  • @thepond99 damn, my vid keeps getting removed for copyright infringement.

  • Could've done without the sound of a chicken coop in the background.

  • sometime he wouldnt go away, beautiful.

  • Without a doubt the best scene in the entire movie!

  • I watched JAWS on t.v last night & thought to myself how great the three leads are as male character studies ...and I thought to myself: "which one am I?" Quint? No, too experienced, rugged & rough edged to be me. Hooper? No, I don't have his expertise, passion & enthusiasm. Brody? No, I'm not as reliable, dedicated & brave as him.

Then I realised: I'm that poor bastard in the little red boat that doesn't even see it coming!!! ...I can't even manage to be that bastard Larry Meadows. :(

  • @digglyda kool man lol nice read lol

  • @digglyda LOL xD

  • what makes this seen even better is they had already filmed it once and due to Shaw's onset drinking it wasn't any good. the next day on set he asked Spielberg for just one more take and fucking nailed it with this proformance. I sometimes watch Jaws for this scene alone, And I personally consider it the greatest monologue in film ever.

  • @calicocidd i agree. it's not just the way shaw so eerily and powerfully performs it, which is absolutely a feat unto itself, but the dialogue, aside from being so gruesome and horrific, makes this the pivotal moment of the film. we finally understand two obsessions: quint with hunting sharks, and the shark with killing quint, as it does in the end, because of his participation in delivering the atom bomb. absolutely one of, if not the greatest, monologues in the history of cinema

  • @calicocidd actually thats not exactly right, they spliced both drunk and sober takes to make this scene so you could say that he nailed it completely with the sober performance while paired with drunken scenes.

  • '.....waiting for my turn, i'll never put on a life jacket again....'

That line in particular gets me every time....shiver!

  • Yep -- awesome scene! Well done Spielberg, Milius, and Shaw (Scheider & Dreyfus)... this scene is about 35 minutes before end of film, and I always call the family in for it! Now the kids will call me for "bigger boat," "Mary-Ellen Moffatt" and this -- "Dad, that Jaws scene is on coming on."

  • it just amazes me that the Navy got away with court marshaling the Captain and covering up their own mistakes for so long, until an 11 year old boy stood up to them and forced them to right the wrong they'd done to Captain McVay. God bless you Capt. McVay. May you rest in peace!

  • God that gives you chills.

  • Fucking best scene EVER!!!!! Everytime i head out for a surf here in Australia this scene makes me look out to the horizon of the ocean..... Fuckin bastard LOL!!!!

  • "Everytime I watch this part my blood curdles. And I'm a former US Marine!"

  • Damn that's ACTING.

  • How does this scene get better everytime I see it?!

  • Thanks. I had to go through 4 or 5 chump remakes, spoofs, and dipsh!t parodies before I found what I was looking for here.

  • @GHZoner i was gonna type ur comment till i saw it

  • @GHZoner Lol!

  • I think you may be right

  • Thank you for posting. Nice work.

  • Brrr. If this story doesn't make your blood run cold, nothing will. R.I.P. Roy Scheider and Robert Shaw; And a 21-Gun Salute to the men of the USS Indianapolis, those who came home, and those who didn't.

  • Incredible, Robert Shaw's eyes just 'look right through ya' at some points, and at others are just purest fear...a fine direction and great actor's homage to those lost on The Indianapolis

  • I wish someone would put the entire clip in quality on youtube again. Thank you for getting it all tho.

  • uploading it in a few mins

  • CLASSIC QUINT
